Quadrature VLFO Quick Minute

"A quick minute with the Quadrature VLFO, from Cyberwerks Heavy Industries. Cherry Audio mentioned this somewhere a few days ago, possibly in a tweet I can no longer find, and my immediate thought was, "this will be brilliant for drones." And it is! The VLFO (the V stands for 'very') lets you make ridiculously slow LFOs, but the module also puts out three additional signals that are 90° apart from each other. Which makes it perfect for long, slow drones as each LFO can drive multiple things very, very slowly, but each output is different, because when one is high another one might be low.

So in this patch I have two VLFOs, four out-of-phase outputs in each, running at two different very slow speeds (70,000ms and 15,000ms cycles, respectively) and controlling the volume level of the eight partials in an additive VCO. And I have another VLFO (33,000ms) controlling the volume of the mixer channels of three supersaw oscillators. And just for fun I threw in a super-slow envelope generator to slowly fade the patch in and out (12 seconds in, 50 seconds out).

In a way this is a terrible demo LOL. Because a quick minute is too short to really hear the very slow changes that are happening, and I thought about just making a much simpler straight demo with much faster and more obvious changes but, well, didn't, alas. But I think you can get the idea, and see what these VLFOs are capable of. And also, they're not limited to being very slow either, just to mention it.

DB-01 reunited with the Zen delay - "It's not you it's me"

"The trusty DB-01 teamed again with the Zen delay. What you see is what you hear - there's no other sound processing of the music, not even a final limiter. Nor is there any volume tweaking of different parts. It was all recorded in one pass although it was cut down from about 5 minutes to three. The vocal samples are from a 1958 sci-fi movie 'The Day the Sky Exploded' about a swarm of asteroids threatening the Earth and the world uniting to destroy them.

The silly title 'It's not you it's me' refers to me having bought the Zen delay for the third time - a new record in the cycle of GAS and regret. But I'm reasonably confident I've finally accepted what I don't like about the Zen and the fact that I will never find the perfect delay - the 'Zen' name adding a final dollop of irony to the whole thing.

The re-buy was also helped along by the sad story of my new 'blackout' Line6 DL-4 delay. Imported it from Thomann in Germany and it was dead on arrival. Well, not quite dead, it would work for anywhere between 30 seconds and two minutes and then freeze. A shame because it sounded pretty good from the little previews I managed to hear.

You may notice I added another cable to the DB-01 rear from the clock out to the gate in. It adds little sixteenth note clicks. The waveform displays the interesting left-right variation created by the Zen.

In other news, it may be time to create a DB-01 'masters' school. Your rank will be determined by how much text from your interface has been rubbed away. At least with my two machines I can tell which one I bought first.

"If not for Metasonix, I would never have bought any eurorack. Metasonix is a legendary company, producing legendary products. And, of them, this R-56 is amongst the rarest.

The R-56 has been out of production for years, and will never be re-released. We’ve all asked. The parts are simply not available. So these are rare, and expensive.

It’s a WTF sort of module. A spring reverb you can voltage control. It has a unique sound, even within the Metasonix realm. Customers complained about wanting MORE gain, said the great Tube Pioneer, so this module has it. That insane gain, plus the ability to feedback an electromechanical spring reverb, make it a module that requires finesse (and maybe an attenuator, or matrix mixer). If you are impatient, or unfamiliar with Metasonix‘s quirks, please pass on this listing. It’s odd. Really weird. Also it requires a lot of power for the cold inrush, power on, tube warm up, so you’ll need a nice beefy power supply like an RKP or Trogotronic.
