New Genki KATLA Handmade Desktop Synth Inspired by Iceland's Volcano of the Same Name
Volcano Synth - Genki Katla video upload by DECIMA1
"Icelandic electronic music gear maker Genki has introduced the Katla, a unique new instrument that they say 'draws inspiration from Iceland’s powerful subglacial volcano'.
The name ‘Katla’ means 'kettle' in Icelandic, fitting for a volcano often on the verge of eruption. Katla is one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes, located on the South Coast near the town of Vík. It has erupted at least 20 times since 1100, making it the fourth most active volcanic system in Iceland. It last erupted on the 12th of October, 1918, but has been showing signs of unrest in the past decades.
Features:
Handmade in Iceland
Basalt side panels, each unit is unique
Genki’s 'digilog sound engine'
Built in spring-reverb, analog filters and warmth circuits
Specifications are still to come at the Genki site, but it looks like the Katla offers four oscillators that can be used in monophonic, duophonic and four-voice paraphonic modes. Other features include a suboscillator, dedicated controls for aftertouch modulation, dual spring reverbs, dual filters, dual envelopes, LFO, chorus, and preset memory."

Additional SYNTH CITY Listings
"The JX-8P is a lovely sounding 8 voice analog poly synth with similar voice architecture to the JX-3P and Roland Juno series. The voice is actually quite a bit more complex than the Junos. What is gained in oscillators and modulation sources is lost in the real time control, however. There are only program buttons where numbers are typed and a single parameter slider is adjusted. This keyboard can be expanded with the Roland PG-800 programmer (not included) or connected up to an IOS app through MIDI for full access to all the controls.
This synth works as expected despite the aftertouch being very difficult to engage, common on these units. All buttons work wonderfully, in great cosmetic working condition overall. Includes AC power cable."

"As you can see, this synth isn't all original with some functional and some cosmetic modifications. These range from two holes in the case (on the control panel and above the keybed) to an aluminum strip covering the hole from the where the pitch controller once lived. The LFO has been serviced by our techs, and 3 knobs have been replaced.
The Micro Moog may have been the cheaper alternative to the MiniMoog, but make no mistake, this guy can produce some classic sounds from the likes of Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Kraftwerk."

ROLAND TR-808 + TUBBUTEC UNIPULSE MIDI DEMO
video upload by Synth Tailor Electronics
"Here's a lovely Roland TR-808 drum machine that needed some repairs, then Midi added. This video is for Jason Massie (who owns this TR-808)
Repairs done:
-Power Supply Rebuilt
-Cleaning of Battery Corrosion, repair of 12 traces (lot's of acid went through a few sections of the traces)
-Repair to the Bass Drum circuit (decay was ringing out infinitely, once pattern was stopped) Faulty film capacitor, transistor found on this circuit as well.
-Repair to the Cowbell circuit (ringing out a high pitch all the time-battery corrosion fault)
-Installation of @tubbutec Unipulse Midi kit, which has an awesome online program where you can configure lot's of different drum sound/midi settings.
The Roland TR808 is such a legendary drum machine, used by just about every Genre of music starting in the 1980's to even today. They have a distinct sound/character that cuts through the mix, most known for their 808 kick, cowbell, clap, snare, etc."

"I felt I had to do an episode 02 after anything else and maybe this should have been EP01. But you just can't make shortcuts with this module. It takes time to understand it and appreciate it as a sculpting tool. I am slowly getting the hang of it and I just needed to share my progress.

"dc11 Bio:
Parisian-based producer and live artist dc11 specializes in modular synthesis, crafting deep and organic techno with rich, looping textures.
Drawing inspiration from the hands-on manipulation of sound through toggling switches, as well as from artists like Mike Parker, Sandwell District, and Luke Slater, dc11 began his electronic music journey with the acquisition of a Teenage Engineering OP-1, where he first created ambient loops. Despite initially possessing limited knowledge of modular synthesis, his eagerness to explore has led to the development of a unique and atmospheric sound. dc11 is definitely an artist to watch!"
