DB-01 sonic noodlings with Midicake Arp spice (no talk)

"The Midicake 'spice' here is using its new MIDI CC parameter controls to modulate parameters on the Strymon Timeline in real time. The delay parameters getting the four-channel CC treatment are mix, repeats, highpass and smear.

It's a just shame that all the Timeline delay parameters aren't available under each 'engine'. So, for example, the bit rate and sample rate parameters are only available on the lofi engine. Delays that could do this much better would be the Source Audio Nemesis or the Free the Tone Future factory - both of which I sold. Somewhat ironic since the reason I sold both of them were that their best parameters were too hard to access. Either would be brilliant with the MIDI CC power of Arp.

So if you have any gear which hides its best stuff in tortured menus or multi-button secondary layers then the Midicake Arp may be the answer. Suddenly anything with MIDI CC control is instantly available for clocked modulation. It's beautiful.

Not to forget the DB-01. Two years in and the machine still fascinates. Here I start with the unloved parameter combo of the triangle wave and bandpass filter. Together they can be rather anaemic lacking both harmonics and bottom end. Yet with a little drive or sub and careful filtering they can still put in a respectable showing. usually I like a clocked LFO, or at least some note-reset phase LFO, but here it's all unclocked audio-rate goodness. I don't vary the LFO rate because it's roughly "tuned" to fit the full application of FM.

And if you can withstand a full 3+ minutes of solo DB-01 then you have definitely levelled up in the DB-01 club :D

"The sound sources used are SEQUENTIAL Prophet-5 and YAMAHA CS-10. The sequence is SEQUENTIAL Poly-Sequencer, KAWAI Q80 and iOS Rozeta. I changed the DIP switch settings on the synchronizer Doepfer MSY-2 to avoid even synchronization. The contrast between the glass-like filter sound of the Prophet-5 and the whistle sound of the CS-10 was well done. For the video, I used an Android visualizer called STAELLA."

-256kb Ram memory expansion. (max time on the buffer memory)
-7.09 O.S with machined socket in the motherboard for more stable operation.
-14 different sampling rates from 11K to 37K.
-Blue LED display.
-CEM filter on the two sample groups with cutoff and resonance slider for the toms and the congas. (same filter chip than in the Fairlight CMI and OB8)

-Toms and Congas modified to be monophonic for longer samples to cut each other off. (great feature for drum loops)

"This is Tom’s Roland SH-7, repaired after the VCO 2 tube pot failed - this thing has some serious juice. We had the opportunity to run it through Doug’s Klark Teknik DN34, a very rare bucket brigade delay from the 70s that is similar to the Marshall Time Modulator. The stereo version was used by Tangerine Dream, you can hear very similar sounds on their record 'Exit'."

"Welcome to 2025! Ringing in the new year with some litteral ear ringing tunes from the TRS-80 Model 4s. I present 'BadClock' a more edgy tune still made only with 100% grade A TRS-80! (haha)

All sounds are from the Orchestra 90 and S2 MIDI module populated on the MIDI80, piped through common audio gear.

part 1: MIDI80 S2 Drums again from the TRACKER program. Side chained with some compression, distortion and delay to take the chorus drums to the next level! Combined with a sine bassline compressed into a B215 Wide (IR)

part 2: A saw tooth running through the blackfinger, and into an IR 412 Celestion V30 micd w a D57. Some effects were created using the Model 4s noise and screwing with its pitch. Meh

part 3: (live part your watching) Sine coated with compression-distortion-compression chain, fed into an IR 112 micd with a D57 and R121-S
