MUSONICS ACQUIRES STG SOUNDLABS, SHIPS 902 VCA REVISION

muSonics is back.

First a little background from Wikipedia:

"1971–1977: Moog Musonics, Moog Music, Inc.

In November 1971, rival company muSonics bought R. A. Moog, Inc. and relocated the company to Williamsville, New York. An old factory at the north end of Academy Street was purchased. The company was renamed Moog Musonics, then Moog Music, Inc.[3]

In 1972, former televangelist and successful salesman David VanKouvering joined the company as VP of Marketing, creating a network of retail stores throughout the United States and then the entire world.[5] Despite the increased commercial success the company saw with the introduction of the Minimoog than with previous products, competition with contemporary manufacturers such as ARP Instruments, Oberheim Electronics, and Electronic Music Studios drove the company steadily deeper into debt.[6][7] Moog Music, Inc. was ultimately sold to Norlin Industries in 1973. At this point, rival companies such as the aforementioned ARP Instruments were producing both monophonic and polyphonic synthesizers that rapidly outpaced the Moog in popularity. By 1975, ARP owned 40% of the synthesizer market share, effectively boxing out Moog Music, Inc.[8]

In 1976, Norlin moved the company to a facility on Walden Avenue in Cheektowaga. In 1977, once his contract with Norlin expired, Robert Moog officially left the company to pursue his own ventures, founding the firm Big Briar.[9]"

And the press release for the new muSonics:

For Immediate Release

January 23, 2023

Chillicothe, Illinois - muSonics has acquired very failed Eurorack manufacturer STG Soundlabs in a private equity trade valued at 6 million Dogecoin. Based in the greater Buffalo area, muSonics is America's oldest synthesizer company whose first instrument, the Sonic V educational synthesizer, is highly-regarded as one of the most reliable analogue instruments of the 1970s.

Suit & Tie Guy, former STG Soundlabs president and newly appointed CEO of the merged company, STG muSonics, was quoted as saying “I’m excited to be an important part of a history-rich American brand such as muSonics, which exists in a unique category alongside names like Abercrombie & Fitch, Montgomery Ward, and Radio Shack."

The first STG muSonics product, the Voltage Controlled Amplifier in the American modular synthesizer format, is currently available at Noisebug of Pomona, California. It is the final revision of the Voltage Controlled Amplifier made by muSonics in the early 1970s as part of their very famous and well-regarded modular synthesizers. Updates and improvements include 15 volt power support, selectable AC coupling, and a new shallow profile of less than 2 inches behind the front panel.

Pending the completion of the acquisition, muSonics will be moving from their current office, a vintage dumpster located behind the Wegman’s grocery store in Williamsville, New York, to downtown Chillicothe, Illinois, making it possibly the only company moving to the state this year.

New STG Soundlabs Boat Rocker - 60HP Powered Eurorack Case

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a 60HP powered Eurorack case with one amp of power per rail (+12, -12, and +5) which is 100% compatible with the fantastic multi-boat frames made by our friends Moog Music in Asheville NC.

The boat itself is my own, designed with the help of Future Retro of Bristol VA. It has a lovely black anodised finish and is extremely beefy. The endcaps are American walnut, finished in pure organic tung oil.

There are twenty M3 nuts installed, and included is a 15V power supply to drive The Boat Rocker."

Knobcon 22: STG Soundlabs muSonics and MooSonics and 902 VCA

video upload by sonicstate

"STG Soundlabs make 5U modular amongst other things, they are also behind the Knobcon event itself.
We spoke to Moot Booxle about the the muSonics modules - starting with a VCA based on the Moog 902, and also the MooSonics - which is a budget more DIY range with PCB panels available as DIY kits first, then prebuilt later."

Loud Ripping Modular Synthesizer Lead Patch

video upload by John L Rice

"Turn It UP! 😁

Noisebug store in Pomona CA made a nice trade with me for some gear so I picked up a second Synthetic Soundlabs Tube VCA to do stereo patches with them, something I’ve wanted to try ever since I got the first one! The patch is pretty simple, just a MIDI keyboard into a Synthesis Technology MOTM-650 interface to create CV and gate voltages, a Noise Engineering Cursus Iteritas Magnus VCO's audio output mult’d into the two SSL Tube VCAs, the separate outputs of a single STG Soundlabs Envelope Generator in 'Pyramid Blaster' mode modulated the Tube VCAs, and three outputs of a Marienberg Devices Sine Phase VCO is modulating the Cursus VCO via a couple Synthesizers.com Q125 signal processors."

Moon Modular sequential switch and ratcheting 5U modular synthesizer experiment.

video upload by I like the Chaos.

"I am enjoying the Moon Modular Sequential switch. I am using it to string patterns together from my Synthesizers dotcom Q119 Sequencer and my Encore Electronics Universal Event Generator. The main bass line is a DIY Ian Fritz DoubleDeka VCO through an STG Soundlabs Sea Devils filter. There are also Corsynth drum modules prominent in the mix. There is a lot more going on as well. Much of it was experiments that did not add to the sound when prominent, but added interest to me when lower in the mix and triggered occasionally. This started out sounding a bit like Devo, but as it progressed seemed to add in some Adrian Belew era King Crimson, and now it barely sounds like either.

I may do a demo of the Universal Event Generator soon. A tip in the meantime, try patching the Trigger out into the trigger in and experiment with the different settings, especially finish loop. You may have to hit the manual gate button to get it started, but that little tip was something I had not thought of until I spent some time with some Serge Modules."

STG Soundlabs 60HP Eurorack Synthesizer

via this auction

Demo video in the listing previously posted here.

"This system was originally built for trade shows, but got changed a bit for internal testing and such. It's got a Wave Slicer and a Post-Lawsuit Lowpass filter for its character modules, in addition to an oscillator, envelope generator, two VCAs, a mixer, an attenuator/buffered multiple module, and 2 passive multiples.

It is built into a rebadged 60HP Moog boat and is totally compatible with their frame systems etc.

Because it was used at a trade show it has to be sold as B-stock. It has been great to have around for testing and calibration but I need to raise money for what I'm working on. This is a way to save hundreds of dollars on an STG Soundlabs 60HP eurorack system.

A power supply is included but not pictured."

STG Soundlabs Wave Folder

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"STG Soundlabs Wave Folder Diode-based Waveshaper Distortion.

the wave folder is a nonlinear diode-based waveshaper with voltage-controllable gain and a 10-volt offset range.

"input gain" has a range of null to extreme distortion, and is calibrated so at high noon the signal is passed with almost no waveshaping. the "gain control" knob and its associated jack allow modulation of the discrete vca driving the wavefolding diode network.
this allows the wave folder to be used as a vca which can be very easily edged into distortion.

"offset" feeds dc into the mix, which can act almost as a pulse width control for your distortion. the lower of the two signal inputs is dc-coupled, which allows you to have a sort of modulation of this character of the signal distortion.
"fold mix" is sort of a flavour control which controls the blend of the signal in a couple of different places in the circuit, and results in very wild waveshaping around 10 o'clock or so.

the circuit inside this module is licensed from jrgen haible with a pcb by detachment 3 engineering."

STG Soundlabs Radiophonic Four - eurorack modular synthesizer (prototype)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Here's the first Radiophonic Four, a 3x60HP eurorack format modular synthesiser with a laser-cut, hand-laminated, gunstock finish walnut frame. This system has four oscillators, three envelope generators, three waveshapers (more if you count the mixers and sample hold!), two filters, and plenty of utility modules. If you are confused by anything in the system, feel free to go to the "Racks" section of Modulargrid Dot Net and do a search for "Radiophonic Four" and you'll see details for each module in this instrument.

I built this as an attempt at a comprehensive voice. It's beautiful but there are things i will do different in the next one, so I am calling this "the prototype." It will be the only one built exactly this way.

A note about the wood finish: this has five coats of pure tung oil and that's it. No varnish or polyurethane, so if you scratch it, just rub a bit of oil into it and it's fine. Power supply is obviously included but not pictured, as are 10-32 knob screws for the legs in case you want to break it down and set it up quickly for a gig."

Aquifex - JD-Xi & MC-101 live cover - TD’s Love on a Real Train

video by SynthAddict

"Aquifex - JD-Xi & MC-101 live cover - TD’s Love on a Real Train (Risky Business)

80% JD-Xi, needed some assistance from MC-101 due to track/voice limits.
Not possible this time to do a ‘one synth/all parts’ video. :-)
I even missed a few parts since it’s actually very elaborate and nuanced.

One of my favorite tracks ever, and way before I knew who Tangerine Dream was. I eventually became a huge fan, collecting everything they did and following their movie scores.

I wanted to make this video after watching Suit and Tie Guy’s awesome ‘how to’ video on his modular called 'Love on a real train - analysis (synth nerds only!)' - go check it out. Thanks for the inspiration, Suit!

RIP Edgar Froese

STG Soundlabs - a complete voice in eurorack format

video by SchneidersLaden

"Some of the STG Soundlabs modules can be considered modern classics, and with some new circuitry, Suit and Tie Guy offers enough modules to compose unique complete voices/systems. For this video we explored a powerful STG Soundlabs system that is very ergonomic and beautiful to look at, with spacious faceplates and a great choice of knobs. And how does it sound? We like it!"
