Roland MC-202 MicroComposer w/ Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"I have an original Roland MC-202 MicroComposer analog synthesizer which comes in its original box and contents. I purchased this in Japan and the previous owner barely used it! The MC-202 is in excellent condition and even comes with original sealed manuals and original Roland factory cable which are unused.

For those who may not be familiar, the Roland MC-202 was a hybrid between the Roland SH-101 synthesizer and a MC-4 MicroComposer released in 1983. The design concept was that users could use the MC-202 to program up to 2 other analog synthesizers via its mini keyboard sequencer via 2 CV/Gate outputs or use the built-in SH-101 analog sound generator in a portable Walkman-like battery operated device.

The MC-202 is excellent for programming eurorack modular gear and interfacing with other Roland x0x equipment. It is a favorite of Aphex Twin, Autechre, Daft Punk and many others..."

"From ten years ago, a paper catalogue from the VEMIA auction. 24 pages, tiny print, and not well printed - but just about readable everywhere. A couple of illustrations (not high quality!!) - of a massive Roland System 700 and the even bigger Yamaha EX42.

Roland MC-4

Title link takes you to shots via this auction.

"Roland MC-4
Vintage 4 Channel CV/Gate Sequencer MC-4A

This is a quite rare and hard to find CV/Gate sequencer from the late 70s early 80s..
If you are sequencing with vintage analog gear this is the cream of sequencers, ask anyone who has one and they will tell you it has the tightest timing and most flexible advanced programming features.
This is the A version, MC-4A. Internal Memory is 16Kbytes. It has not been upgraded.
Please note this is a 100V unit, in Australia and Europe you will require a stepdown transformer. It draws 25W so a relatively cheap transformer will be fine.
US may also require a small stepdown transformer to go down to 100V.."

Roland MC-4b, MTR-100, and OP8

Title link takes you to more shots via this auction.

Details:
"This is a Roland MC-4b MicroComposer Digital CV/GATE Sequencer for sequencing analog synths with CV/GATE inputs. It comes complete with the extremely rare optional MTR-100 Digital Cassette Recorder and the somewhat rare optional OP-8 DCB converter for controlling a Juno-60 or Jupiter-8 via DCB interface. It also includes the original manual, 20 Maxell M-90 Data Cassettes (recommended by Roland in the manual), and an original DCB cable for interfacing with a Jupiter-8 or Juno-60. It took me over 12 years to complete this set, now you can save yourself the time and effort by buying them altogether. This sequencer is the tightest sequencer on the planet, and can sequence CV/GATE synths with ease. It was used by many artists to create some of the best music ever heard. Former users include Vince Clarke, Rational Youth, Human League & Martin Rushent (Dare!), Richard D. James (Analord), John Foxx, Wang Chung, Tears For Fears (The Hurting), Toto, Devo, YMO, and many more. A keyboard with CV/GATE output can be hooked up to enter notes via keyboard, or you can enter notes using the calculator keypad. This MC-4 is the more difficult to find expanded model with the "B" designation that allows you to save patches to the supplied MTR-100 Data Cassette Recorder at twice the speed as normal, and also contains double the memory capacity. This is my last MC-4b, and it will be sorely missed. You can listen to a song I composed entirely with this setup and an additional MC-4 here: http://isatellite.info/lifeintokyo.html. Roland AIRA Version 1.8 Firmware Update for MC-707, MC-101, and VERSELAB MV-1

video upload by RolandChannel

"Version 1.8 update for the MC-707 GROOVEBOX, MC-101 GROOVEBOX, and VERSELAB MV-1 adds a host of requested features to your instrument. In this video, Zeale walks through the new enhancements for each instrument as well as how to import clips and new Production Packs.

New functions include undo/redo plus clip import, export, and save. Clip compatibility between the MC-707, MC-101, and VERSELAB MV-1 means you can load clips straight from an SD card, then save and share between units or with other MC and VERSELAB users. There are also three brand-new MFX to embellish your sound—Exciter, Phonograph, and JD Multi—as well as support for pitch bend, hold, and other MIDI CC recording options.

Expand your sound and clip library with new MC/MV Production Packs. These top-shelf collections of clips and sample-based tones designed by Wave Alchemy will expand your sound library or jump-start new ideas for songs. Each Production Pack contains 48 custom tones, 50-plus drum one-shots, 16 kits, and 64 clips—with clips organized in groups of four for building 16 custom scenes.

If you’re an MC-707 GROOVEBOX owner, you can now set the key and scale of your project. And there’s a multitrack mode for Pad Note.

If you’re an MC-101 GROOVEBOX owner, you’ll find a game-changing partial editor for creating compelling tones directly from your MC-101. Plus, you can set the key and scale of each of your projects.

If you’re a VERSELAB MV-1 owner, this update includes a powerful random tone designer for quickly creating interesting sounds from a variety of algorithms. The update also adds another much-requested feature: vocal take panning.

And that’s not all. Find more under the hood when you download the Version 1.8 update.

Roland MTR-100 Digital Cassette Backup for MC-4b

via this auction

"extremely rare (as in hen's teeth rare) Roland MTR-100 Digital Cassette Backup unit for use with the Roland MC-4b MicroComposer. Without this unit, if you power down, you'll lose your MC-4b sequences. This unit allows you to save and load your patches at twice the speed using hard to find data cassettes (Roland recommends Maxell M-90 data cassettes). Fortunately, a number of years ago I sourced some new old stock cassettes and 20 of them are included with the MTR-100 in this auction (19 of them sealed). The MC-4b is the same sequencer Vince Clarke used on many of his earlier works with Erasure. Features: Double-speed backup of MC-4b sequencer data. You will need an MC-4b for this to work (or will have to upgrade your MC-4 to an MC-4b) since only the MC-4b has the add-on board and interface jack that allows you to interface with this unit." via Rob

Roland CMU-810

Click here for shots via this auction. Details: "This is the Roland CMU-810 Compusynth, one of the rarest synths ever made by Roland DG Group, an obscure offshoot of the Roland Corporation that remains to this day. In the old dealer price sheets from the 80's it was listed as an expander for the CMU-800 Compu Music, a small mixer/synth/drum machine in a similar housing that you hooked up to a computer. If you look online or read Peter Forrest's A-Z book, a false rumor has perpetuated that this is simply an SH-101 or an MC-202 in a metal box without a sequencer. They reference the schematics but the schematics are nowhere to be found. I've been looking for years for them without any luck. I've compared all three synths side by side, and have triggered the CMU from both an SH-101 and MC-202 sequencer as well as the Roland MC-4. The sound out of this box is entirely different than it's younger cousins, more aggressive, with a faster attack, and much nicer filter. The SH-101 and MC-202 sound very plasticky and thin compared to the CMU. The CMU-810 sounds more like the SH series of synths and soundwise it's probably closer to the SH-09. It excels at bass sounds and percussive effects. It also differs from the MC-202 and SH-101 in that it has a delay slider on the LFO, an input to control the VCA for tremolo effects, and removes the trigger control over the envelope. It also has a built in miniature mixer so you can merge the sound of two additional synths or drum machines (MC_202/TR-606?) with the output of the CMU. It sports sliders from the era of the Jupiter-8 indicating that it probably predated the MC-202 and SH-101 by at least a year or so. One European reviewer on SonicState wrote, "They say it is like the 101/202 but I have not heard any of them (101/202) as aggressive as my new baby (cmu). Very clear, very warm, loads of rumbling and as stated before it can be a very aggressive basspump. If you want to get rid of yours give me a shout cause I would not mind linking a few together." I agree 100%. I would buy one over an MC-202 or SH-101 anyday. But the CMU makes a good partner for either of these synths because it takes up such a small footprint and can act as a second voice when hooked up via CV/GATE. You can watch a video of a CMU-810 on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eof7hVqBsw0"

ROLAND MC-202 MICRO COMPOSER with Original Box & Manuals

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction - learn how to sell on eBay here.

Description via Wikipedia [it's interesting that individual synths are now getting dedicated pages there]:

"The Roland MC-202 (MicroComposer) is a monophonic analog synthesizer/sequencer released by Roland in 1983. It is similar to the TB-303 and SH-101 synthesizers, featuring one voltage-controlled oscillator with simultaneous saw and square/pulse-width waveforms. The unit is portable and can be operated from batteries or an external power supply.

The internal synthesizer features one voltage-controlled oscillator with simultaneous saw, square/pulse-width and sub-octave square waveforms. Additionally there is a 24dB Low Pass filter, an LFO and a single ADSR envelope generator.

In terms of circuitry, it is nearly identical to the earlier SH-101 synthesizers but lacks the noise generator, choice of LFO shapes and modualtion/pitch bend controls. However, unlike the SH-101, it does include a delay on the LFO. The two units also share a design aesthetic in terms of the control layout, casing, lettering, knobs and slider caps.

The MC-202 includes a sequencer that can play back two separate sequences simultaneously. Two sets of CV/Gate connectors on the rear of the unit allow for routing the sequences to external synthesizers. One of the two sequences is used to control the internal sequencer. The sequencer is programmed much like Roland's early digital MC-4 and MC-8 Microcomposer sequencers, whereby notes are entered with pitch, length and gate length. Additionally, each note in the sequence can be an accent and slide, which is similar to the TB-303 and the SH-101 and allows for so called acid sequences.

The sequences are lost if the unit is powered down, however a tape interface is provided so that sequences can be stored to and recalled from an audio tape recorder.

There are DIN sync inputs and outputs which allow the unit to synchronise playback, either as master or slave, with other DIN sync-equipped instruments such as the TB-303 or the Roland TR-808. The unit can also generate and sync to frequency-shift keying signals from a tape recorder."

Roland MicroComposer MC-4b + CV Interface OP-8 + Digital Cassette Recorder MTR-100 1981

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Same type of sequencer essential to early Depeche Mode, Aphex Twin etc. This has extra memory (upgrading it from a 4 to 4b). Voltage for the MC-4b is 100v, voltage for OP-8 and MTR-100 is 220v and 240v. So a bit of a mixture frustratingly. The MC-4b works perfectly as far as from my use. I haven’t had a chance to use the OP-8 or MTR-100, so selling those more as completist collectors pieces. They may well work perfectly, but I had no need for them practically. I recommend getting a copy of MC-4 hack to work with this too- so you can compose and transfer the data from your computer to this sequencer.

"The unit is 117volts.

**In countries that use 230 ~ 240volts**
You may need the voltage converter to use it.

ROLAND OP-8 CV Interface

The Roland OP-8 interface was designed to control Roland polyphonic synthesizers that were equipped with a DCB (Digital Control Bus) interface via the Roland MC-4 Microcomposer. The OP-8 and synthesizer were connected together usin a DCB cable. The OP-8 and MC-4 Microcomposer were then patched together using patchcords via each of their patchbays. The transpose control on the OP-8 was able to transpose the synthesizer up or down by one octave"

Roland MC-202 MicroComposer SN 92400 w/ Original Box, Gig Bag, & Manuals

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Roland MC-202 MicroComposer with original box, manuals, and Roland case up for grabs. Introduced in 1983, this was Roland's next generation battery operated hybrid MC-4 MicroComposer coupled with a SH-101 analog synthesizer.

The synthesizer section has great bubbly analog sounds. The sequencing portion is great at controlling other CV/Gate equipment including vintage synthesizers and modular eurorack synthesizer. Used by many artists including Aphex Twin, Autechre, and many others.

The unit is in excellent condition and features a modification which bypasses external CV/Gate input signals from the CPU, thereby reducing the lag. Although many companies perform this modification, most of them do so by drilling holes into the sides of the synthesizer.

Included are the original packaging, styrofoam inserts, manuals, and an rare original Roland carrying case."

Roland MC-4 Microcomposer w/OP-8 CV Interface & MTR-100 Recorder

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Here we have for sale a piece of electronic music history, an original and clean MC-4 micro composer with all the extra units for implementing this classic sequencer into your studio. The OP-8 as the patch bay to your vintage synths with CV input and the MTR-100 for storing your sequences. Many believe the MC-4 to be one of the "tightest" hardware sequencers ever produced.

Purchased new by the current owner in the late 70's, this particular example sat as the centrepiece of the studio for many years before being retired to storage. These sequencers are rare as hens teeth especially when paired with the OP-8 and MTR-100. Don't hesitate on this one, who knows when you'll see another set like this for sale."

Well, there is plenty more I can add to the MC-202, but there is really not much space in the MC-202 box, I've almost use every single inch of space in there. I could of use a wooden case just like my TR-606 mod, but I couldn't be bother to spend so much time just to make a wooden box.

Mods on the MC-202:
1./ LFO switch : You can choose from Super Slow Sweep / Normal / Crazy Fast
2./ Proper CV gate Input : The MC-202 does have CV/Gate In's and out's. However, it's a known problem that the CV/Gate Inputs have slight problems, since many data are actually quantised before they reach the Synth section. This is because the CV/Gate In's are routed and pass through the internal sequencer CPU then out back to the synth.
3.) VCF Cutoff cv (input) : When a jack is plugged in, the CV is ADDED to the VCF Cutoff Frequency slider setting.
4./ PW CV : When a jack is plugged in, the CV is ADDED to the PWM Slider setting
5./ VCA (limited Volume Control) : The VCA CV In doesn't produce any dramatic effects, it acts like an extra Volume Control.
6./ MOD : Actual MOD on the MC-202 goes from the LFO Sine output to the MOD Slider. So it is possible to tap a CV IN to the mod...
7./ PORTAMENTO CV SWITCH INPUT ( +5V will turn Portamento OFF. 0V will turn it ON. ) : Note: +5V will turn Portamento OFF. 0V will turn it ON.
8./ ACCENT (VCA) CV SWITCH INPUT ( +5V will turn ACCENT ON. 0V will turn it OFF. ): +5V will turn ACCENT ON. 0V will turn it OFF.
9./ ACCENT (VCF) CV SWITCH INPUT: +5V will turn ACCENT ON. 0V will turn it OFF
10./ Selector for Accent -> VCF/VCA (toggle switch): MIDI AUX GATE Out to switch between going to the VCA ACCENT and the VCF ACCENT. When switched, AUX GATE is going to BOTH Accent VCA and Accent VCF, and this actually activates the Accent VCF.
11./ Ext Audio Input to VCF Source Mixer: all the VCO's and Sub-Osc are mixed at the VCF Source Mixer
12./ Ext Audio Input to VCA"

Creating swing feel on the Roland MC-4b

YouTube via darenager
"A demonstation of how to create swing on the Roland MC-4, you could also apply the same technique to the MC-202, MC-8 or other similar device, if this video proves popular I may do some more tutorials.

This is not a musical performance just a demonstration of technique so I have kept it to a simple 16 step sequence, of course you can use any length of sequence depending how patient you are.

First set the timebase to 48,12,6, this gives you 48ppqn so each 16th note will last for 12clocks, and enter your notes as normal. in the first part of the clip I am playing the sequence straight - so all step lengths set to 12.

Next we enter step time mode (shift 2) and change each alternate step to an offset of 12 but so that each 2 adjacent steps add up to 24, for example 14 and 10 as in the second example, or 13 and 11 (third example), higher difference = heavier swing feel. You can have the smaller number first or second depending on whether you want a rushed or lazy feel, also you can experiment with more complex timings for different types of groove, such as a pattern of 4 - 14,10,13,11 or whatever, just make sure that your total measure length is equal to 192 so that the sequence cycles correctly when synced. That's pretty much it, hope you find it useful and thanks for watching."

Pics of the inside below. A search for Roland MC-4 on the top right of the site will bring up additional posts including demos.

"This is an advanced 4 channel V/Oct CV / Gate Sequencer with an extra CV2 for i.e. VCF or VCA control and an MPX gate control for i.e. drum triggers, external modular gear aso. All switches work fine and key 1 and 2 are triggering double sometimes, but that's easily addressed with the back button or more usage. It can be programmed by the keypad or an external CV / Gate keyboard. There's also a modern way of programming it with the MC4 Hack program for Mac & PC."
