"A vintage synth reinterpretation of Sting’s “Russians”, originally released in 1985 on his debut solo album The Dream of the Blue Turtles.

Please use headphones or a subwoofer for the full audio range.

For this cover, I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the original while giving the track a distinctly analog, vintage synthesizer character.

The bass foundation was created with the legendary Moog Taurus bass pedal synthesizer, known for its massive, deep and powerful low-end sound. The Taurus has become one of the most iconic bass synthesizers of the 1970s and is especially famous for its thunderous sub-bass character.

All additional sounds, sampled elements, drums, percussion, effects and sound-design elements in this version come from the E-mu Emulator II. Released in 1984, the Emulator II became one of the defining samplers of the 1980s, combining early digital sampling technology with analog sound-shaping circuitry. Its unmistakable 8-bit character gives this version a deliberately authentic vintage texture.

'Russians' itself was written by Sting during the Cold War and became known for its powerful anti-war and peace message.

The goal of this cover was to combine two very different worlds of vintage electronic music:

1970s analog synthesis + 1980s digital sampling

The massive analog low end of the Moog Taurus meets the gritty, unmistakable character of the E-mu Emulator II to create a new interpretation of Sting’s 'Russians'.

If you are interested in vintage synthesizers, analog bass synthesizers, E-mu samplers, 1980s electronic music, synth covers and classic studio gear, you will hopefully enjoy this version.

Note this appears to be the first post to feature the STING Midi Wind Synthesizer. "Hi, this is Peter Ponzol. Most of you know me as a mouthpiece maker and saxophone designer. I was also a consultant and clinician for Lyricon, the first wind synthesizer. I demonstrated Lyricon at the Frankfurt Music Fair in 1979, 1980 and 1981. In 1985 I was contacted by a Japanese company called Sting. They had made a Lyricon type instrument that was Midi, something Lyricon was not. This allowed you to control any Midi device from the Sting unit. I did some consulting for the company and introduced it at the Frankfurt Music Fair in 1987. The company was small and Sting never became well known. If you know Lyricon, you know Sting. Keys and fingering possibilities are similar. There are some interesting innovations in Sting. For example there is no reed or typical woodwind type of mouthpiece. The mouthpiece is more like that of a recorder and thus much easier for none woodwind players to play. All information is transmitted over Midi except velocity, which is sent analog. I have two control bodies and the so called brain unit, as pictured. I packed these up around 1990 and they have been packed up in storage ever since. I have the original Operation Manual. The electronics brain is 220 volt and will need a voltage converter to 110. I just checked them with a midi unit I have and everything works. The only issue is the RCA jack on one body is loose. I am not an electrician and don't want to try and repair it. I'm sure its a simple thing for someone to fix. The jack works but is loose. These are real collector pieces of equipment. I have never ever seen another one for sale and I'm sure they are really rare. As they are 35 years old the sale will be as is. At the moment everything works as it did when I put them away. Its hard to determine the value as they are so rare. I have seen Lyricons going for $3,000, but I will start the bidding at $995.00. I will only ship to an address in the continental USA. Some scans of the NED Synclavier II brochure and a cool little bit of synth history in via Mike McRoberts. If you remember from this earlier post, Mike was the US Project manager for Akai during the MPC-60 days.

"The best event I ever went to at a trade show was sponsored by NED. It was at AES, and was a private party at the Palladium in NYC. I managed to get a couple of the metal embossed tickets. It seemed like a normal product presentation, until they announced Sting. Sting came out and sang to a track played by the Synclavier. This was right before his first solo album had come out. Then Sting, said. 'Let's bring out Branford Marsalis.' He came out playing a soprano sax. Then Sting, one by one, brought out his new touring band that had supported on the his solo album. It was a great night of new music."

"The Swarm is an Analog Fuzz Harmonizer that sounds like a thousand killer bees coming to get you!

It basically turns your input signal into a square wave, than multiplies and divides the frequency of that wave, giving you nine possible harmonies in two different octaves. Modulation is applied to the harmonies making them go from a nearly perfect tracking harmony, to a wild and uncontrollable swarm of mad bees.

The WORKER sets the level of your input signal, now fuzzy and buzzy. The SPECIES allows you to select between 9 different intervals for your harmonies. The QUEEN and DRONE set the levels for each of the harmonies that stay one octave apart.

The FLIGHT and STING control the modulation applied to the harmonies. They are highly interactive controls and you will find many different sounds by just messing with these. STING sets how fast or slow the harmonies will follow your playing. Turn it CCW for it to feel like the harmonies sting you at every note you play. Turn it CW and the harmonies will sound like a drunk bee hovering up and down around the root. FLIGHT will set the response of the modulation. CCW the harmonies will keep it oscillating up and down, while CW it will glide and hold from one note to the next.

The MASTER control will set your output volume.

With all that said, no matter how one tries to explain the theory and what each control does, the Swarm is best when played by instinct. Mess with every control until you find a tone that you like and let the bees take you to sonic places you've never been!

The theremin is one of the most fascinating musical instruments of our times. It was invented in 1919 by the Russian Lew Sergejewitsch Termen (later known as Leon Theremin), a trained physicist and ambitious cello player. For many inventors, Lew Termen's creation was a starting point for experiments with the unlimited possibilities of electronic sound generation. His theremin, also known in popular language as the etherwave violin, nevertheless represents even today something unique among musical instruments: it is played without touching it. Electric fields radiated by the instrument are influenced through movements of both arms and hands. In this way, the pitch and volume of the instrument can be controlled. Through every gesture, through the smallest movements of the body, the musician has the possibility of creating melodies and of shaping music in the air with his or her hands. The young Leon Theremin himself was able to enchant a large concert-going audience both in Europe and the USA with these magical sounds. But despite such enthusiasm, the number of theremin virtuosi has always remained small. This is not least because of the fact that the instrument demands of the performer an extraordinarily sensitive control of the body.

The Taurus 1 use linear VCOs. The Minimoog and the later Taurus 2 and 3 use exponential VCOs. Linear VCOs are the secret for the stable bass sound of the Taurus 1.

You might want to bookmark this one to come back to as you have time. I have posted videos from the Rock School series in the past, but this is currently the most comprehensive set if not the complete series - eight episodes broken up into twenty four videos. I opted to create eight playlists for the eight episodes so you can read the description for each under each set of three videos. "Delight in the double sting of the Twin Wasp Filter!

This is actually two complete Multimode Wasp filter circuits joined together at the hip in a fascinating yin-yang relationship. There is only one input and one output to and from the pair of filters, so they work as a single Super Wasp with a variable internal signal relationship control that can be dialed from serial to parallel and all of the fascinating sonorities in between.

We've combined the really novel features of two different filters originally from the creators of the imaginative WASP and Oscar keyboard synthesizers manufactured in Oxford England back in the late twentieth century.

Unique to the delightfully quirky WASP is it's clever use of a CMOS logic chip in place of traditional op amps to form its 12db state variable type filter. They have adjustable resonance, but will not self-resonate. They do however have variable distortion controls!"

Experimental Music (1984-1989) - EMS SYNTHI 100

"I recorded these pieces in the 1980s and recently recovered them from twenty-year-old cassette tapes. The first excerpt is from a work that was recorded at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. The other songs were recorded at Carleton University in Ottawa.

The video clips are processed (using AfterEffects) screen captures (using CamStudio) of music visualizations (using the iTunes and Dr. Glitter visualizers).

'Blade' features drums, synthesizer (Yahama DX-7), alto saxophone, voices, a bicycle pump, coins, pieces of wood, water and probably a few things I have forgotten about.

'Ýoung Sycamore' has a live vocal and percussion part that wasn't recorded. The lyrics were adapted from a poem by Wlliam Carlos Williams (http://oldpoetry.com/opoem/35368-Willia m-Carlos-Williams-Young-Sycamore). The piece was written/played using the software 'PC Composer' and a midi controller.

'Untitled' features an EMS Synthi 100, a very early synthesizer from the early 70s. It takes up half of small room and is interesting to use because you have to physically connect all the different sound items like sine waves, noise and filters. According to Wikipedia, only about 30 of these synthesizers were produced and their original selling price was 25,000 USD (the equivalent of over $100,000 USD today). If I had known it was so rare and expensive, maybe I would have appreciated it more back then. The arpeggios and background sounds are from a Korg Poly61 synthesizer.

For 'Sting Quartet No. 2', all the notes were typed into a computer (using the PC Composer programme) and then played back through a midi controller before being recorded on a reel-to-reel tape deck.

'Mammals I Have Known and Loved' features the EMI Synthi 100, a tam tam (a kind of gong, but this time played with a violin bow), alto saxophone, empty pop bottles, voices, loops made of sound effects and laughter. The voices mainly came from outtakes of interviews I had been recording.

"very underrated synthesizer - the presets are quite 80's trying to do DX7 of the time ---but with the correct programming can sound huge fat and very vintage analogue --- I prefer it to the similar Rolands ---i.e. juno and jx3p. The resonant VCF filter is awesome and very expressive. No external effects ---just the pure sound of the korg---sometimes using the stereo chorous for sting like sounds --I find a mono out with no chorous best for punchy bass like sounds"

MTI Auto Orchestra Rare Vintage 70s All Analog Drum Machine Sting Machine & Bass Synth

"Up for us a very unique and very rare Hand Made in American MTI Auto Orchestra from the late 70s. It’s an all Analog VCO first generation full band auto accompaniment machine with built in simi programmable Drum Machine, Expression Pedal controlled String Machine and Foot Pedal controlled Bass Synth. It’s in very good condition with normal wear. Everything works as it should and it sounds so good that your jaw will drop!

The Drum Machine sounds very similar to a Roland CR 78 mixed with a Roland CR8000. Programming it is very similar to those machines as well with a plethora of push button rhythm variation and fill options. You can also mute and and unmute individual kit pieces for build ups and break downs.

The String Machine sounds very lush and reminiscent of a ARP Solina. It’s controlled by the expression pedal and you have different chord options to choose from with your foot! You also have the option to do monophonic string Melodies controlled by the foot pedal keyboard. You also have the option to have different rhythm variations of the strings the perfectly sync to the drum beat. How cool is that!

The Bass Synth sounds reminiscent of a Roland TB 303 mixed with a Moog Taurus. That is controlled by the foot pedal keyboard and like the string machine section has the option for it to sync to the drum beat or played live. It will also follow along with the expression pedal chord of your choice when the in that mode.

Each section has a volume control and the string and bass section have limited by useful tone shaping controls.

This thing is the real deal and a serious drum machine or synth collectors dream machine. Very few of these machines were made and I have never seen one in this good of condition with the accompanying foot pedals. It’s the original “Band In A Box” and you can do complete sets just with this. Perfect for Indie, Lofi, Dreampop, Experimental, Techno or Folk musicians who want to add the magic of this machine to their music."
