Void & Vista: FOLDS - Walkthrough

video upload by VOID & VISTA

Press release follows:

VOID & VISTA announces availability of FOLDS as intimate yet expansive boutique VI for Native Instruments’ KONTAKT platform and NKS-compatible devices

“I’m fascinated by the human voice, so anything that lets me use it in ways I’ve not heard before is a must; FOLDS can either sit amongst real voices, generating a unique and complex — yet subtle — character, or it can drive a piece up front with its own very performable and programmable settings.”
- GRAMMY-, BMI-, and World Soundtrack Awards-winning film composer David Arnold (Casino Royale, Godzilla, Independence Day), 2024

LONDON, UK: cutting-edge contemporary music-orientated virtual instrument creator VOID & VISTA is proud to announce availability of FOLDS — formulated as an intimate yet expansive boutique virtual instrument for Native Instruments’ KONTAKT platform and NKS-compatible devices, based upon the human voice and its creator’s award-winning sound design engine — as of March 28…

Creatively combining expressive, characterful, and unique sampling with powerful sound design features and an inspiring UI (User Interface) to offer 32 sound sources anchored around expressive vocal articulations and textures, both real and imagined, FOLDS is ideally suited to contemporary media composers, production music writers, and sound designers alike. And thanks to the variety of emotive textures that it offers, electronic music producers and artists across multiple genres can clearly expand their toolbox, too.

That being said, then, FOLDS’ bespoke collection of carefully curated male and female vocalist articulations incorporate soft and hard arrhythmic expressions; weaving and wavering vowels; broken reversed hums; evocative vocalisations designed for bass; sound effects; and more.

For FOLDS also features an inspiring collection of effect sounds, such as reverse granulations, as well as re-synthesised, deconstructed, and synthetically processed sounds using Eurorack modular, effect pedals, and tape machine manipulations. Sampled synth waveforms taken from a collection of analogue hardware are also featured.

FOLDS’ 32 sound sources can be layered, sculpted, and effected using a deep, two-layer sound design engine that includes multimode filters; dual motion LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators); six envelopes; customisable LOFI effect; three-stage parallel CHARACTER effects (with presets and user impulse response import); and dedicated REVERB and DELAY in the SPACE section. Such sound design power is available to all via an inspiring and intuitive UI with over 150 controls — including access to a custom MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) mapping page and dedicated send effects — designed to keep users focused on making music.

Moreover, FOLDS comes complete with a vast collection of over 300 preset snapshots organised locally for ease of use; all have pre-assigned mod wheel and/or aftertouch modulation mappings for jaw-dropping sound manipulation and adding musical expression... evidenced by award-winning film composer David Arnold’s understandably uncurbed enthusiasm!

FOLDS is initially available to purchase for 20% off with the FOLDSLAUNCH20 discount code that is valid until May 8, 2024 — rising thereafter to its regular price of £129.00 GBP — as a KONTAKT PLAYER- and NKS-compatible AAX-, AU-, and VST-formatted virtual instrument plug-in featuring 4.5 GB of samples that is compatible with all major DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) running on macOS 11 or above — natively compatible with Apple Silicon — and Windows 10/11 directly from the dedicated product webpage here: https://www.voidandvista.com/products/folds

VOID // Live @ Erica Synths Garage

Published on Aug 2, 2017 Erica Synths

"VOID performs live creating sound with Doepfer A100 basic system with added Erica Synths and Doepfer modules, Korg SQ-1 sequencer and Zoom ms70cdr effects pedal. Visuals are created beforehand using Pure Data and then modified with an analogue synthesizer and other low-resolution video devices. Live performance was played on VDMX.

VOID is a project of Reinis Naļivaiko (sound) and Artūrs Kalvāns (video), it’s an experimental audiovisual performance duo born in Liepāja back in 2012. Their sound comprises both dark and deeply atmospheric soundscapes and rhythmic noise compositions, aiming to create a diverse emotion gamma to the audience. In the creation process VOID uses field recordings & sound synthesis and their performances are always improvised. The visual aspect of the project is driven not by particular aesthetic principles but rather defined by methods used in the picture creation, such as manipulations with the signal through mixing it with other video sources, interfering with the video chain and digitizing of an analogue signal. The frame sequence and composition is controlled by the sound, and the visual rhythm either illustrates or breaks the sonic one. Works of VOID are influenced by the GAS project of Wolfgang Voigt, Pan Sonic & Delia Derbyshire."

Opal - rhythm machine & drum synthesizer

video upload by Fors

"Opal is an instrument made for intricate pattern creation. With parameter locks, probability, conditionals, ratcheting, independent track length, time division and traversal, it’s a breeze to program exciting patterns.
Opal comes with four distinct, highly malleable, synthesizers and two sequenceable effects. While the synths are tailored for creating drum sounds, it’s up to you to choose where, or if, the line between percussion and melody is drawn.

As always, every single sound and effect in this video is made with Opal."

Void Reverb & Flux Sampler

+ Modulation

Gem
Gem is an FM synthesizer capable of a wide variety of sounds, from deep and heavy bassdrums to glistening lead melodies. At its core, Gem consists of 2- Operator sinewave-based phase modulation (commonly referred to as FM) that has been fine-tuned to sound rich and punchy.

With bipolar modulation and feedback, it's possible make a vast range of different waveshapes- including common analog shapes such as square, triangle or sawtooth. It's a highly malleable form of synthesis that has been boiled down to its essentials, with an emphasis on the sheer quality of execution.

Mass
Mass is a modal synthesizer, which is a type of physical modeling synthesis that employs a bank of bandpass filter to generate its sound. Typically, physical modeling is used to mimic real-world sounds, but with Mass the essence of the synthesis method is used to make all sorts of wildly synthetic sounds, often with an otherworldly quality due to its physically-inspired origins.

The sounds possible with Mass ranges from semi-realistic percussion, bells, textures, noises, strange phase-y melodic sounds to clean and precise timbres reminiscent of additive synthesis.

Dust
Dust is a noise generator that is based around the concept of Pulsar synthesis, which is a method adjacent to Granular synthesis. The sound is composed of very short particles of sounds that creates a texture when played fast and/or dense.

Dust combines concepts from all kinds of different types of synthesis methods to create anything from pure white noise to perfectly soft spectral washes. By layering multiple oscillators Dust can also generate classic electronic metal sounds which is very useful for making hi-hats and cymbals.

Slate
Slate is a sample playback engine equipped with a granular mode that can wildly transform any sample. At its core is a high quality sample playback engine with edge smoothing (click-less playback and looping), single cycle waveform support and a flexible loop mode.

The granular mode let’s you go deeper in sound design by playing back small particles in a pattern that essentially reconstructs the original sound, but with the possibility to dramatically change the speed and pitch independently

Void & Flux
The FX (effects) track hosts two different effect engines: Void and Flux.

Void is a reverb that has been fine-tuned to sound great with a wide variety of input sounds, with an emphasis on delivering good transient response. With in-depth EQ:ing of the input and reverb signal, it’s possible to greatly shape the overall tone of the effect.

Flux is an automatic sampler that continuously records the output of all the other tracks and divides it into 16 slices that can be played back by the FX track. Think of it like an always-recording tape loop that you can use to repeat or transform sections of your pattern by playing different snippets as single shot samples.

Modulation
Each engine has a dedicated modulation page with four different modulation sources that can be routed to any parameter via a modulation matrix. The different sources are Vel - velocity received from the sequencer steps (or a MIDI note), A dedicated LFO and Envelope per track, and a random value (Rand) that is received on each trigger of a step or MIDI note.

Void & Vista: FRAMES

video upload by VOID & VISTA

Press release follows:

LONDON, UK: VOID & VISTA is proud to announce availability of FRAMES as its latest bold virtual instrument for contemporary music creation — crafted for Native Instruments’ KONTAKT platform, pairing characterful, expressive, and unique sampling with powerful sound design features and an inspiring interface rendering it ideal for media composers, production music writers, and (obviously) sound designers, as well as also expanding the toolbox of artists and producers across multiple genres thanks to its variety of emotive sounds and textures — as of April 23…

Being built around 40 sound sources made from capturing unique, unrepeatable sonic moments, FRAMES readily represents a bespoke collection of specially curated samples created using prepared instruments, resonated sound objects, and aleatoric performances using experimental techniques. These are all recorded at 96kHz using specialist microphones to capture sound beyond the range of human hearing, ready to pitch down and explore.

Such sound sources are split into five categories: INSTRUMENTS — traditional instruments captured using extended techniques and aleatoric performances; OBJECTS — uniquely prepared objects and instruments played in experimental ways; EFFECTED — heavily effected, processed sounds, and resonated objects; TEXTURES — tonal, textural, and found sounds that are perfect for blending; and WAVES — sampled synth waveforms taken from an analogue hardware collection.

Above and beyond that, the new ZONE SHIFT feature vastly expands the timbres of each sound source, enabling immediate dynamic exploration of the movement and detail found within them. Thanks to shifting samples from different registers, sounds can shift from slow and muted to frantic and urgent with each key press.

But better still, those 40 sound sources can be layered, sculpted, and effected using the deep two-layer sound design engine, featuring multimode FILTERS; two MOTION LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) — LFO 1 and LFO 2; six envelopes; LOFI effects; an ENSEMBLE page for blending additional voices; parallel CHARACTER insert effects; and dedicated SPACE send effects. And all of this sound design power is available from an inspiring and intuitive interface, designed to keep users focused on making music.

Music-making or otherwise, users ultimately benefit from FRAMES coming complete with a colossal collection of preset snapshots organised logically for ease of use, with pre-assigned mod wheel modulation mappings for jaw-dropping sound manipulation.

FRAMES is initially available to purchase at a 20%-discounted price until June 4, 2025 — rising thereafter to its regular price of £129.00 GBP — as a KONTAKT PLAYER-compatible/NKS (NATIVE KONTROL STANDARD®)-ready AAX-, AU-, and VST-formatted virtual instrument plug-in featuring 16 GB of samples that works with all major DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) running on macOS 12 or above — natively compatible with Apple Silicon — and Windows 10/11 directly from the dedicated product webpage here: https://www.voidandvista.com/products/frames

To function, FRAMES needs Native Instruments KONTAKT 7.10 or higher via the Native Access 2 administration tool for music creation software available from here: https://www.native-instruments.com/en/specials/native-access-2/

Void Modular Graviton VCO Demo

Published on Aug 15, 2019 Sean Pendleton

"VOID Modular Graviton VCO Demo by Pressurewave

A swiss army knife of a VCO in 8hp. Triangle, sine, saw, pulse, /2 suboctave square, /4 suboctave square, white noise, pink noise. The noise is normalized to the FM attenuverter, so you can do anything from 'a little dirty' to 'tuned noise'. It's 3340 based, so it's very stable, but enough extras to give it some personality."

🧙‍♂️ BORLANDO LOOM ✨ Cyberpunk ◢◤ Dreampunk Ambient Soundscape ✨ Roland JV-2080 ✨ Atari 1040STE ✨

video by Fornax Void

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child. 8 hr live stream further below.

"🌐 https://links.fornaxvoid.com ✨ 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗢 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗠 🧙‍♂️ 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸! Three years after it’s initial release, I made a music video for this track, containing the final album audio master. ℹ️ ❯❯❯

This video was recorded 2021-JAN-23 and 2021-JAN-27. I fed the MIDI data (or what was left of it) of my 2018 track BORLANDO LOOM into Cubase Lite - a free version of Cubase 1.0.

Cubase Lite (running on the Atari 1040STE) sends the MIDI data to three Roland JV-2080 synthesizer modules in stack mode. Obviously one JV-2080 would be enough to play back this track. But since I currently got three of those things in the studio, I thought more blinking lights and more screens look cooler in a video.

The JV units then send the MIDI into an Akai S1000, which again is only in the video because the MIDI monitor modes on that thing look interesting. The S1000 sends the MIDI to my old MacBook running Snoize MIDI Monitor, which is displayed on the EIZO CRT screen.

The Amiga 1081 CRT monitor shows either a VHS version of the original 2018 Borlando Loom Blender animation or NesFX (the MIDI visualizer on the Wayfar MidiNES). Audio in the video is not live, but from the album master.

BORLANDO LOOM is a cyberpunk ambient soundscape recorded between 2018-APR-12 and 2018-APR-14, using a Roland JV-2080 synthesizer module. Mastered in 2019 and released in it’s final form on 02/02/2020 as part of Cyberspace Database 1.0.

Cyberspace Database is the result of a 5 years long exploration of Cyberpunk Ambient themes. A journey through the timbres of classic digital and analog synthesizers and samplers with focus on defining the pillars of the SemiconductorWave genre.

Cyberspace Database is available as big box physical release and 24 bit download on Bandcamp as well as on most streaming services."
