Metasonix tamed by pressure points & more

1) Metasonix tamed by pressure points vol 1 - "I've tuned the metasonix R54 oscillator with Make Noise pressure points using a tuner on my iphone. The Pressure Points are tuned to ABCDEFA. The oscillator does drift a little so it may not be perfect. Also I am new to pressure points and I'm not a particularly good keyboardist anyway.

In this video the R54 is routed to the R51 VCA and then to the R52 VCF. an LFO profides some vibrato to the VCA but the full voice is metasonix."

2) Metasonix tamed by pressure points vol 2 - "I'm new to pressure points so forgive my "style". I went for a different more characteristically metasonix voice with this second video. This one is R54 to R53 with the pulsar adding grit, then into the R51 with some vibrato from an LFO to the distortion CV input."

3) Metasonix drums - "Using R51 R52 R53 & R54 as a drum machine of sorts. All sounds are 100% metasonix. The other modules used are for control voltages. There is a doepfer dual vca in the mix if you count that ;)"

4) R53.MP4 - "Metasonix R53 basic demo for ritchie. R-53 pulser as sound source R54 osc used with pulser R54 osc w/ uLFO osc as sound sources for 'ring mod'"

Metasonix Wretch Machine Videos by Smokey Quartz

Wretch Jam #1 Published on Apr 12, 2014
An experiment. Metasonix S-1000 Vacuum Tube Synthesizer and R-56 Vacuum Tube Spring-Reverb Module. No keyboard or controller, just the S-1000 ran through the R-56. A lot of the noise, feedback, and distortion is coming from the R-56. Everything is competing for the attention of those little springs in the R-56. Lo-Fi, noisey, droney, and live.

The video is from an old digital camera. The audio is recorded straight into the computer with a little bit of EQ and compression. I can't say this is representational of the S-1000 or R-56 sounds, it is just what came out tonight.

Wretch Jam #2 Published on Apr 13, 2014
Another all tube improvisation, this time with the Metasonix S-1000 synthesizer and D-1000 drum machine being ran though the R-56 Spring Reverb module. The Elektron A4 is sending some triggers to the Metasonix gear but is contributing no sounds. Everything is competing for those little reverb springs.

Video is from an old digital camera. A mono audio signal being recorded straight into the computer with a compression and EQ.

"If not for Metasonix, I would never have bought any eurorack. Metasonix is a legendary company, producing legendary products. And, of them, this R-56 is amongst the rarest.

The R-56 has been out of production for years, and will never be re-released. We’ve all asked. The parts are simply not available. So these are rare, and expensive.

It’s a WTF sort of module. A spring reverb you can voltage control. It has a unique sound, even within the Metasonix realm. Customers complained about wanting MORE gain, said the great Tube Pioneer, so this module has it. That insane gain, plus the ability to feedback an electromechanical spring reverb, make it a module that requires finesse (and maybe an attenuator, or matrix mixer). If you are impatient, or unfamiliar with Metasonix‘s quirks, please pass on this listing. It’s odd. Really weird. Also it requires a lot of power for the cold inrush, power on, tube warm up, so you’ll need a nice beefy power supply like an RKP or Trogotronic.

The video in this listing’s photo section features the sound of this exact module.

More likely, you’ve been longing for this, but the blood sport that is Metasonix’s secondary market has kept you from your dark distorted springy dreams. Realize them now. Live them. Buy."

Metasonix KV-100 "The Assblaster" demo.

YouTube via asktehdust | August 21, 2010

"Demo by Nicolas of the band Ask the Dust of the Metasonix KV-100

The Assblaster is a one of a kind tube multi-effect for guitar, synth, drum machine... really anything.
I believe this is the only video demo on youtube that shows what it sounds like with a guitar.

It's composed of 4 indepedant modules : a preamp, a filter/ring modulator, a pulser and a VCO. There's also a built-in gate that can trigger a really cool envelope follower effect with the right settings of filter and input level. Like a ll Metasonix devices it takes quite some time to see how all parts interact with each other, but once you get familiar with it there are literally thousands of possibilities.

People usually know about how great Metasonix products are to destruct any kind of audio source, and of course they are,, but there is a lot more to them. Actually I find them really usable in a recording context, cause the one of a kind texture they bring to an arrangement never fails to lift a song .
It's the exact opposite of harsh digital distortion, the fact that it's tube based makes the tones really organic and warm...perfect for fuzzy walls of sound, synth like guitars, etc...

Official description :
The Metasonix KV-100 is not called the "Assblaster" for nothing. We've taken all of our knowledge of extreme vacuum-tube audio processing and combined it into a single convenient, easy-to-use package. Inevitably, the end of the TM series will cause shit-eating, ass-fisting guitar players to whine about how "underappreciated" they are. So, we're feeding them a foot-long fecal sandwich of audio penis.

It's complete with disgusting and juvenile cartoon art by Dave Lovelace, of Retarded Animal Babies fame.

The KV-100 contains the following:

--five goddamn real new-old-stock VACUUM TUBES.
--the basic preamp stage of our TM-7 Scrotum Smasher, driving:
--the waveshaping (pulser) and ring modulation functions of our TM-1, minus the ring-modulator carrier oscillator, which then drives;
--a VCO derived from our TM-3 (it is NOT intended for use as a synthesizer pitch source, only as a special effect for signal degradation), leading to;
--an all-new wide-sweeping bandpass filter, with envelope filter function plus wah capability (external pedal);
--plus an envelope follower, which also makes a gate signal;
--and a noise gate on the output, which is always active and is driven by said gate signal.

Plus relay-based true bypass for the main circuit, plus relay controlled activation of the VCO and pulser. Controllable with manual switches or external Fender-type amp footswitches.

Plus plenty of processing inputs and outputs for control voltages. No MIDI, dammit.

Only 8 knobs allow for vast ranges of distortion and effects, from subtle to flaming-enema. It's for those filthy, nutsack-sucking guitarists. Because they deserve, and love, flaming enemas.

Yes, you can plug your damn guitar into it, Yes, you can plug line-level sources into it. Yes you can run the output to a guitar amp or any mixer. Yes, all the inputs and outputs are compatible with modular synthesizers.

7/31/23 Metasonix RK8 Filterwall + SSL 1660 + MooSonics Vanilla VCA/Envelope + PCM 70 (gated plate)

video upload by Cfpp0

"A maiden voyage into the latest glory hole from Metasonix."

via Metasonix

"The RK8 contains six bandpass filters, which use vacuum tubes. They are simple 'twin T' designs. Each filter is about one octave lower in range than the one to the left—treble on the left, bass on the right.

Each filter may be manually swept with its own separate tuning knob, over approximately one and one-half octaves. Or ALL the filters may be swept together, using either the 'MANUAL TUNE' knob, or the CV input, which overrides the knob when a patch cable is inserted. Although it is capable of some conventional swept-filter effects, the RK8 is more useful as a complex equalization system or for unique special effects.

Resonance is separately adjustable for each filter. Usually the treble filters will resonate strongly and oscillate under some settings. The bass filters might not. It’s a strange monster.

Inputs and outputs are compatible with all Eurorack and other modular synthesizer equipment. The output peak voltage is limited to the supply rails and can’t damage other modules.

Don’t assume you know what you are getting here—the RK8 is unlike anything else ever marketed. Also don’t expect it to track VCOs. Its voltage-to-frequency curve is 'more or less' hertz-per-volt but can’t really be guaranteed. The six vactrols in each RK8 were hand-matched, but can’t be expected to remain matched, or to track together perfectly.

Again, everything about the RK8 is abnormal. It is not perfectly 'clean' and perfectly 'distortionless', and it cannot be made so. Because it uses vacuum tubes.

It is something you have NEVER seen before. It can NOT be compared to any other product, ever made, PERIOD. Do not walk into this with 'preconceptions'.

Specs: 32HP width Eurorack module, with circuits protruding about 1.5″ or 38mm behind panel. The RK8 uses six 5702 subminiature pentodes, all Raytheon US military surplus from the 1980s. Power supply required is about 600 mA after warmup and 1.4 amps when started cold from +12v, and 10 mA from -12v. Low-cost power supplies are NOT recommended. A spare tube is included, although soldering equipment is needed to replace any of the tubes. They are run very conservatively and will last many, many years."

Metasonix RK8 Filterwall Demonstration 1 SD 480p

"Metasonix RK8 Filterwall prototype demo - video 1.

Modules used: Hexinverter Mutant BD9, Mutant Snare, WMD Crater and Kraken, Moog DFAM, and some live percussion samples from the 1010 music Bitbox.

This is an un-edited 13 minute session of experimentation with direct audio recording to showcase the tonality of the prototype as it processes these sounds. When audio stops and comes back in that is me bringing up a separate mixer channel of the raw audio unfiltered as a comparison, which is then muted out and the RK8 direct channel is brought back in."

A Minty Fresh Assblaster

"One used Metasonix KV-100 Assblaster serial number 13 - a rare item, out of production and from a limited run. Barely used maybe 20 hours, virtually mint with power supply."

This one in via Brian Comnes:

"Reluctantly I am selling my Metasonix Assblaster. It's just not being used and I can use the bucks for some other items. Gotta like those graphics however. 8-)

So if you had achoice between adding an Eventide H9 pedal or getting asmall Linnstrument keyboard what would you choose.

When Buchla raised the price of the Easel AUX expander from $499 to $799 I dropped interest in that, sheesh you can get a lot of good synth stuff for $800."

HELLFIRE MODULATOR TS-21

images via this auction

Inside a TS-21

via brian c

"As you can see in the photo, this is the third unit produced. This unit is completely hand wired from point-to-point, and in EXCELLENT condition. This unit has an extra knob in the rear which is not mentioned in the owners manual, leading me to believe that this could possibly be an early prototype. The rear knob has an affect on the frequency of an oscillator, separate than the ones the L1 and L2 knobs control.

Metasonix has put its knowledge of tube circuitry to good use in the design of the TS-21. The unit is made up of three stages, each with its own tube: a preamp with a VCA, a pulse-width modulator (PWM), and an LFO-controlled waveshaper. Vacuum tubes are also used for the LFO and for powering additional circuits, giving you a total of five tubes in the device. Despite the tube count, however, the TS-21 has very low self-noise and gets only slightly warm to the touch.

NAMM 2013: Metasonix-S-2000 Vacuum-Tube Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Up for Buy It Now is the New Metasonix-S-2000 Vacuum-Tube Synthesizer. One Picture taken at the 2013 NAMM Show, others added 1/26/13!

I played it a the NAMM show and was impressed by it's user friendly design. It's a very dynamic sounding synth. Totally unique in a world of synths. You will be amazed at it's sound!

Metasonix took 20+ years of experience in vacuum-tube electronic music, and used it to make the most exciting instrument in the history of Metasonix. The S-2000 is not merely a new repackaging of old designs. It is a revolution, and a game changer.

The S-2000 was made to be as easy to use as possible. Just plug in power, plug in an amplifire, wait 30 seconds for the real new-old stock vacuum tubes to warm up, and start playing it. The built-in 400mm ribbon controller is instantly responsive, and needs no special treatment. No trimpots, no fiddling with MIDI interfaces or fighting with fistfuls of cables. The miseryhas been engineered out.

The simplicity might fool you. The S-2000 has enough controls and enough flexibility to keep the musician busy for years of sonic exploration.

The S-2000 contains:

Two all-tube oscillator/filter "Operators", with resonance variable from flat responce to deep oscillations. Waveshape is variable from clean sine wave to a distinctive distorted square/pulse wave. Resonate both for FM sound effects.

An all tube VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier)

Three Contour Generators:

C1 Attack-Release types feeds the VCA

C2 Attack-Decay type feeds the "Operator" 2 Sweep and optionally the VCA, and may be set to retrigger automatically.

C3 is the same as C2, but feeds the "Operator" 1 CV Input.

Plus a built-in and highly-sensitive ribbon controller, which triggers C1-C3 when the Ribbon is touched. Two Modes are available, continuous open for pitch bending (Theremin Style), and single-touch for discrete held pitches. The Ribbon gives more than 3 octaves of pitch range.

By setting the the two "Operators" properly, it's possible to get a range of classic synthesizers sounds. By setting them a little differently, you get sounds no one has ever heard before.

The S-2000 is made for use anywhere. It weighs only 1.25 kg (less than 3 pounds). Use it stand alone, or mount in a standard 19" EIA Rack. (It is 3U high but only protrudes 1 inch, or 25 mm behind the panel). It runs from a standard 12v DC adapter (one is included that can work on any mains power source on earth.

It's built like a proverbial tank. The front panel is a massive anodized aluminum slab with legends deeply engraved and paint-filled, and the electronics are protected by a tough, fully shielded steel enclosure with nearly indestructible powere coat. The tubes are very commonplace types, easily available from any vacuum-tube distributor. Metasonix offers a full set of replacement tubes, pretested and known good, via it's distributors, at a very reasonable extra charge.

The Input connection for the SpectraSymbol Ribon is accessible, so that any size SpectraSymbol ribbon controller may be plugged in and used - right up to their 1-Meter length. Need more resolution? No problem.

External Inputs and Outputs are available. CV and Gate Outputs from the Ribbon are accessible from the front-panel jacks at all times. The CV-Gate Inputs can be used by switching the CV/Gate selector switch (CV can be varied from 1.5v to 7v for more than 3 octaves of range, tunable with the front-panel tuning knobs) The audio input feeds into "Operator 1, so that both "Operators" can be used as Bandpass Filters in Series. The S-2000 is hand-made in California, by real people.

So: Purchase with cconfidence. And play with confidence. Because you're playing at the leading edge with the New Metasonix-S-2000 Vacuum-Tube Synthesizer. "

bigcitymusic special edition on the bottom.

"For Sale: (1) Metasonix R-55 Thyratron VCO synthesizer module in eurorack modular format. This was a limited edition module that was only sold at Big City Music and is not longer available. Includes M3 screws and power supply ribbon cable. From Metasonix:

The R-55 is essentially one of the VCOs in the legendary S-1000 Wretch Machine in a 22U Eurorack module. It produces the notorious "sharkfin" sawtooth waveform of thyratron VCOs, replete with the weird pitch variations and apparent モnoisinessヤ of a thyratron oscillator.
Turn up the overdrive control, and the oscillator output clips the output amplifier pentode tube, for a unique soft-clipped square-wave sound. The simplicity of the R-55 will fool you--its behavior is erratic and weird, it always sounds broken, and the waveform is deviated in every way. You don't even need to feed it Hz/v CV; just run a square-wave or pulse signal from a conventional VCO into a pitch CV input, and it will force the R-55 to track along with the other VCO.

Cosmetically & functionally perfect. Original lunchbox not included - this has been converted to a sweet 4U rackmount unit, custom-made to Metasonix's spec (and signed by the man himself! See pic's) kept in a clean, smoke-free space.

This is completely custom and is the only one ever produced as far as I'm aware.

Would fit wonderfully in a Buchla, or Serge rig that has an extra row. Its normal 19" rackmount size (84hp) so it fits in anywhere you need it.

If you're here, you probably know what this thing sounds like. It's a beast. Nothing else does what this thing can do. Consider pairing with your modular, to drive the VCO frequency, etc. It's a blast.
