Exploring the Hexinverter / Erica Synths Mindphaser | Drone Sound Study

"Yesterday was Drone Day and technically I'm one day late, because I didn't finish the post-processing in time. But anyway: this felt like the right moment to share something a little different.



I'm currently expanding my rack and learning how to operate a few new modules properly. One of them is the Hexinverter / Erica Synths Mindphaser. At first, I honestly wasn't completely convinced. I tried it, struggled to find the right tones, packed it back into the box and was already planning to send it back.



But then I gave it one more evening.



Instead of judging it too quickly, I tried to understand how it actually works. I slowed down, explored the interaction between the oscillators, the modulation paths, the waveshaping, and the strange areas between tone and chaos. And then the potential suddenly became clear.



Some modules simply need more attention. They have a learning curve and they don't always reveal themselves immediately. But once you reach that point of understanding, they can turn out to be real powerhouses.



So this is not one of my usual performance videos. It's more of a slow exploration: a drone-focused sound study with the Mindphaser at the center, sometimes shaped by effects, filtering, gates, and modulation.

Déjà vu has two almost identical channels A and B. Each channel has the FADER input and the ADD input and an output with light indication. The FADER MODE switch alters the behavior of the module, either attentuating or attenuverting the FADER input where the ADD input will be added to the processed FADER input. The last option is crossfading between the FADER Input and the ADD input which is great for creating performance oriented macro controls.

This is a set of live, improvised dance music performed on a eurorack skiff with the Roland TR-1000. The TR-1000 provides most of the drums, and the eurorack does everything else.

So here we go checking out how this synth engine will play out with his other citadel friend the Wave Bard in breakbeat torture mode.
Also a cool oportunity to play around the Diktaat from Mzourack to trigger both units in a performative way.

Citadel Alchemist is a patchable hybrid-synthesis based eurorack module that empowers you in discovering melodies and even harmonies despite being monophonic.
Patch programmable sequencing via the control signals into the two PITCH MOD inputs opens up a world of melodic inspiration beyond classic arpeggios while staying in your preferred SCALE.

5 synthesis modes
The Alchemist has a carefully tuned wide timbral range spanning across 5 synthesis modes (FILTER, FM, HYPERSINE, SUPERSAW and GLITCHNOISE) accessed by main TIMBRE sweep that is refined by the RATIO control.

The ENV macro knob affects different parts of the synth and sequencing engine to maximize musicality and it even lets you continually morph between the synthesis modes and access truly unique sounds.
The timbral palette is further extended by the dual FX section which offers either a wide delay that will smear the arpeggios into echoed harmonies or a chorus-flanger-distortion-combfilter macro custom tuned for each synth mode.
You can also access gliding rubber textures with the PITCH SLIDE macro that applies pitch envelope and portamento.
You can customize its rhythms and scales with the web-based editor.
Modulate anything
All main parameters can be modulated and tightly sequenced by the surprisingly powerful CV and GATE pattern generator. Create groovy off-grid beats using the built-in LFO, which can be synced, reset, or left to run freely.

JMTSYNTH, known for its popular creative noise drone synths, has released the DNVO-1a , offering even more flexibility and excellent integration with modular synths! This exclusive Beatsville model features a white acrylic panel and an additional Gate In jack, adding a touch of glamour. It's modulated by the voltage control of a BASTL INSTRUMENTS modular. Five modulation options are applied to the main VCO, which is then output via a brutal noise filter. Each sub-oscillator, SUB1 through SUB3, has its own on/off switch, is set to a different frequency range, and the modulation frequency can be adjusted with a knob. Each one distorts the sound intensely, creating a deluge of organic noise. Additionally, the NOISE knob allows you to apply noise modulation to the main VCO, adjusting the peak point with the knob. The fifth modulator is the WAVE GENERATOR, which can be enabled with the WAVE ON switch. The "WAVE GENERATOR" allows you to adjust the frequency with the WAVE LEVEL knob, while the ATTACK and RELEASE knobs, trigger switch, and Trigger 1 through Trigger 3 knobs allow you to create periodic, rhythmic vibrato and pitch bend. Random, rhythmic bends and long-period ups and downs can also be freely adjusted. This is a very practical technique, as it can be combined with noisy sounds to create noise synth sounds that add rhythmic elements without becoming monotonous. The DNVO-1a (Deluxe Edition) offers three types of trigger type switches. The top position, MIX, mixes the timing determined by the Trigger 1 through Trigger 3 knobs and sends it to the VCO. The bottom position, REPEAT, creates a regular rhythm and rhythmically modulates the VCO. The center position, GATE (OFF), is a special mode that allows the built-in envelope generator-type LFO to be generated from an external gate signal input to the Gate In jack (Trigger 1 through Trigger 3 are turned off, and the trigger is generated from the gate signal input to the Gate In jack). For example, if a gate signal is input from an external sequencer module, you can adjust its waveform with the ATTACK and RELEASE knobs before sending it to the oscillator. The additional CV IN jack also allows you to connect the CV OUT from an external modular or other device to modulate the VCO with an external CV! Everything is intuitive, allowing you to create even the most complex sounds. Furthermore, by connecting to external modular synths, you can explore the variety of analog synth sounds colored by JMTSYNTH's organic noise. This is an outstanding desktop synthesizer with a wide range of synth sounds."
