Modular Day Barcelona 2023 after party - HRTL

video upload by Befacosynth

"There are few in the Czech electronic music culture with a background as storied as HRTL, the performing alias of Prague-based synthesiser musician Leoš Hort. Iconically performing from the centre of the dancefloor, HRTL is a force of the wildest nature on his instruments of choice, a carefully curated setup of modular synthesisers and tabletop instruments. Infamously electrifying and always improvised, each of his live club performances is quite literally one-of-a-kind; generative breakbeat rhythms meet with liquefying acid, and synths sliced from the utmost peaks of euphoria."

Making Sound Machines - Farbshaper

video upload by John Schussler

"I covered the Making Sound Machines Farbfolder in a previous vid: [below]

The Farbshaper is similar, but not such a standard wavefolder design. It has a gain circuit that's unusually responsive to the amplitude of the input signal, giving it a very organic sound and variety of timbres you don't get on other folders.

The input signal is all sine wave from the Befaco Pony VCO.

Making Sound Machines Farbfolder vs. Joranalogue Fold 6

"Just got the new Farbfolder in from thonk.co.uk and put it together (it's an easy build, just knobs and jacks). I must admit the sexy color LEDs at the top caught my eye. They've 3D printed a light guide and used a transparent panel, so it gives you an excellent show of das blinkenlights. (Die? Das? I've forgotten what little German I had.)

But of course there's always the real question, how does it sound? And how does it compare to others at its size? I figured I'd pair it against the Fold 6 from Joranalogue, which is also 4hp, for a head-to-head.

Source audio is a Befaco Pony VCO sine wave. Envelope from Zadar.

Vaski Introduces ECS-4 Triggered Switch & AM-3/3 Triple Attenuverter Matrix Eurorack Modules

video upload by Vaski Embedded

"Vaski ECS-4 Triggered switch is a Eurorack electronic switch for CV signals.

ECS-4 can create presets for other modules and lets you play with those in a performance. You can connect a trigger sequencer (as done here) to the Select inputs. Or construct new melodies piecewise from different pitch CV sequences.

In this trailer a Making Sound Machines Stolperbeats is playing 6 different percussive sounds on a single TINRS Wobbler2.

Available in May 2023 at https://www.vaski.nl/"

Vaski MUX ECS-4 prototype

"Prototype 10HP precision triggered 4x CV switch

Gate input or tap on a button selects one out of multiple sets of CVs. 4 CV channels with a combined gate output. Analog CV inputs have attenuverters.
Two or more modules can be linked together to extend the switch."

ECS-4 Triggered Switch

Get two tones out of that kick synth. Add both a modulating LFO and an envelope, but alternate between them on triggers. Switch between melody phrases or modulations with a trigger sequencer. ECS-4 has two analog CV groups with attenuverters. Trigger input or button press activates one of them. Output row repeats the selected four CV inputs and its trigger, switching always to the active input group.

Two or more ECS-4 modules can be connected together to make 4, 6, 8, 10… different triggered CV groups. Connecting flat cable included.

10 HP, skiff-friendly

https://www.vaski.nl/product/ecs-4-triggered-switch/

AM-3/3 Triple Attenuverter Matrix

Three 1-into-3 buffered multiples with attenuverters on every output. Summing outputs make it a capable CV matrix mixer. Leds show input and output activity.

Distribute a sequencer velocity output to modules that lack CV attenuator knobs. Mix modulations in pitch CV sequences. Or just use the nine +/- 5V outputs as additional static CV knobs.

Befaco Introduces the Fx Boy CV Controllable EQ Eurorack Module

via Befaco

"Following, our most special project till date: Fx Boy

Fx Boy is a 12 HP multi FX module with CV controllable EQ and Dry wet, with the peculiarity that each FX is built into a Gameboy cart! Yes, you read right, a Gameboy cart!!

And this is not just it, we have gathered a group of fellow Eurorack manufacturers to design a cart. So we will have 6 carts included in the module from: Feedback modules, Making sound Machines, Tesseract, Touel Skouarn, XOR electronics and Befaco!

It has been a great pleasure and BIG FUN to collaborate with these mega talented designers in these projects! You can expect old fashioned flangers, aggressive folders, dirty bitcrushers, fuzz galore and trashy distortions!

Module will be released in summer 2023 both assembled and DIY and pricing is still to be decided."

Farbfilter and Stolperbeats in 7/8 time - Transistor Ladder Lowpass with Drive

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"For this one we channelled our inner Radiohead and made a beat with a 7/8 rhythm.

Come to @superboothberlin 11-13 May 2023 to chat to us and test our modules - we'll be in a beach tent together with all our friends @thisisnotrocketscience3942 @paultasbeeb @knobula6211 @apolloview9305 @vaskiembedded and Swampflux!! We are going to have a really good time and you are all invited to come and play!

Plus they are all debuting new modules we are really excited about!

In this video we are using #Farbfilter, an analog transistor ladder filter for Eurorack with a wicked overdrive stage and CV controlled resonance. We're still putting the finishing touches on this one, tweaking a resistor value here or there and taming the ranges a bit, but we love how it sounds already. A huge thankyou to @DivKid and @SynthDad for providing feedback on this one!

In this patch, #Stolperbeats is sending a MIDI sequence to the @WeAreElektron Model:Samples, playing Samples from the @GoldbabySamples Silverdrum Machinedrum pack for modelsamples. The bass is a PWM saw wave from Apollo View Modular's Allscillator complex VCO.

Both signals are filtered using the Farbfilter, with Stolperbeats sending a CV ramp to the filter cutoff of one lowpass filter and @Befacosynth Rampage being triggered to modulate the other. Enrica is controlling the offset for cutoff and attenuating the incoming resonance modulation. Kits will become available after Superbooth via our friends at @ThonkSynthDIY and @explodingshed5542.

New Module: Farb Highpass - Analog Transistor Highpass Ladder Filter with Tilt EQ

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Here's another neat little jam with a module from our brand new Farbfilter series!

This time introducing Farb Highpass - an #analog transistor ladder highpass filter, with a few tricks up its sleeve! It is a lovely sounding eastcoast subtractive synthesis filter topography that is often somehwhat overlooked and distinct from the classic lowpass ladder circuit.

We tweaked the #circuit and added CV controlled resonance to the feedback path. We also added a Tilt EQ. It lets you either bring some of the warmth back in, or double down on the #highpass effect and go all sizzly.

In this patch, we're using Stolperbeats to sequence the @WeAreElektron modelcycles, its audio processed through the left #FarbHighpass. The module receives resonance CV from Stolperbeats' envelope out, generating a pulse whenever the kick drum is playing. You can hear the filter's lovely self-resonance kick in with the sweep at the start of the video.

The bass is a Sharktooth wave from @apolloview9305 awesome #Allscillator complex VCO (kits available from Thonk). Its output is folded using the right hand Farb Highpass, with Stolperbeats sending a CV ramp to the filter cutoff with every bass drum. With CV patched, the cutoff knob becomes an offset for the incoming voltage.

At the drop, the voltage controlled resonance is expertly wobbled using @Befacosynth Rampage, good news! We have a small batch of DIY kits packed - you can solder the DIY version with our lead #engineer Enrica and be the first to get your hands on one of these modules! If you can't make it, the kits will become available after Superbooth via our friends at @ThonkSynthDIY and @explodingshed5542 .

New Module: Making Sound Machines - Farbshaper. Classic Analog Waveshaper in 4HP

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Getting ready for #superbooth 2023! Really excited to see all our friends and fellow makers again!

This year, we will be introducing our brand new Farbfilter series, and the best thing is, we have a small batch of DIY kits packed! If you join our workshop at @superboothberlin, you can solder the DIY version with our lead engineer Enrica and be the first to get your hands on one of these modules!

In this video, Enrica is playing the #Farbshaper - a classic westcoast analog #waveshaper for Eurorack, designed to add overtones with two CV controlled stages. This module is a non-linear shaper, and it's perfect for electronic and acoustic sounds, ranging from gentle timbral transformation to colourful wavefolding in 4HP.

In this patch, we're sending a MIDI sequence from Stolperbeats to the @WeAreElektron Model:Cycles, with the audio from Model:Cycles processed through the left Farbshaper. The module gets some extra CV modulation from Stolperbeats' envelope out, generating velocity curves from the drum pattern.

The bassline is a pulse wave from @apolloview9305's fabulous Allscillator complex VCO (kits available from @ThonkSynthDIY ), its pitch sequenced with This is Not Rocket Science's @thisisnotrocketscience3942 Tuesday procedural sequencer - a fantastic module that keeps on cropping up in @DivKid clips. The pulse wave is folded using the righthand Farbshaper, with CV input from TiNRS Tuesday's velocity and accent out.

Enrica is tweaking Farbshaper's Gain, Fold and Pleat parameters. With CV patched, Farbshapers knobs become attenuators for the incoming voltage. The little oscilloscope is the awesome battery-driven Korg NTS-2, which came with a lovely book by @BJOOKS on @KorgOfficial synthesizers.

The Model:Cycles sounds are derived from a factory patch, so shout out to @sm0hm and the Elektron team for the lovely and inspiring FM synth they created and also check out Ess' awesome new max4live stuff at @ForsFM!

New Sibilla Stereo Digital Oscillator Eurorack Module from Clatters Machines

video upload by Clatters Machines

"Clatters Machines moves mountains with Sibilla stereo digital oscillator module acting as an ever-evolving sound machine for soundscapes, melodies, and drones

SAN BENEDETTO DEL TRONTO, ITALY: small town lovers of music and electronic instruments Clatters Machines is proud to announce (website-only) availability of its Sibilla stereo digital oscillator — translating the beauty and harshness of a semi-barren mountain into a 10HP Eurorack module that sculpts sound with various saw and sine waves running through intricate delay networks altered by LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) and white noise to create constructive and destructive interferences, enabling ever-evolving soundscapes that can be both droning and/or melodic in nature — as of April 15…

Inspired by a mountain, designed by the sea. So few words, with so much meaning; those eight words that so subtly make an appearance on the Sibilla module’s rear represent its backstory, what inspired its creators, and where they are based. But, for clarity’s sake, the company collectively calls it: An ever-evolving sound machine for soundscapes, melodies, and drones.

It is fair to say, though, that there is more to that Sibilla backstory than meets the eye. “Living by the sea can be peaceful and inspiring, but also quite stressful as the tourist season reaches its peak and, all of a sudden, a small town doubles its number of citizens,” continues Clatters Machines Co-founder, engineer, electronic designer Michelangelo Nasso. “Those are the moments in which we’re constantly looking for air and a new space that is able to inspire us while calming our nerves! Luckily, we live in a weird region in which a 40-minute drive means the difference between swimming in the sea and hiking at 2000m above sea level, surrounded by semi-barren lands which actually make you forget for a moment that you’re still on planet Earth. One of those magical places is called Monte Sibilla — Sibella Mountain, and our new module tries to pay tribute to it.”

As a stereo digital oscillator, Sibilla’s L/M (left/mono) and R (right) channels are the output stages of two audio feedback loops, each of which is made up of a main sub-sinusoidal wave oscillator and two saw and sine waves with frequencies affected by the generation of (right-channel) harmonics and (left-channel) sub-harmonics. Saying that, though, all of those waves have different phases with respective offsets constantly affected by minor variations created by two pairs of GRAINS randomly fluctuating within the waves’ amplitude spectrum and being sampled at a certain speed.

Thereafter, the waves meet each other at a so-called ‘common point’ — where everything happens and changes continuously — together with two white noise sources, creating constructive and destructive interferences that are affected constantly by two LFO movements. Moreover, such interferences are then run into a resonant low-pass filter and distributed to four different delay lines from where they are finally fed back into the audio loops at different time intervals, depending on the GRAINS movement.

Making it to Sibilla’s summit as an ever-evolving sound machine for soundscapes, melodies, and drones translated from the beauty and harshness of a semi-barren mountain is destined to be a long-lasting musical journey that is as adventurous as it is inspirational in and of itself."

This Is Not RocketScience | Fenix IV Jam | Wobbler2 First Patch

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting Stijn & Priscilla from TiNRS. They hide their company secrets in plain sight, so they're not easy to find between all modules made by Stijn for personal use. The Wobbler2 was on the verge of release, there's a collab between TiNRS and Making Sound Machines (a Looper) and a collab with Error Instruments (White Rabbit). There's also a reverb on the way and I hope they follow my suggestion to have a reverse reverb on it. But that seems to be true rocketscience...
I had a lot of fun making this video.

The Fenix IV is better than I could ever guess, but unfortunately it's sold out forever. Let's hope some of its 31+ components make it to eurorack. The Wobbler2 is a good start!

TiNRS Wobbler 2 Complex LFO, Apollo View Allscillator and Prototype FX

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Finally carving out some time to play with a couple of brand new eurorack synth modules that have arrived at our doorstep!

Our friends at This is Not Rocket Science have finished their Wobbler 2, successor to their original Wobbler complex LFO, and it's a module that keeps on giving. It lets you seamlessly morph between a number of inventive waveforms, like self-phasing, twang and pendulum, and shape, attenuate and invert the result on two outputs.

And equally exciting is Apollo View Modular’s awesome Allscillator, a great sounding analog oscillator that offers a number of cool waveshapes like Shark fin and PWM Saw, and modulation options like soft sync. Best of all it's available as a DIY kit from Thonk which means with some soldering skills you can build your own!

We took the opportunity to test both modules with prototype circuits of some of our upcoming modules, a line of analogue shaping, saturation and distortion FX modules that will be available prebuilt and as DIY kits - more on that soon!

In this patch, we use our Stolperbeats drum sequencer to sync TiNRS Wobbler 2 to a septuplet shuffle. It is delivering triggers to a prototype of our drum voice on kick and snare, as well as Befaco's Burst for a sneaky delayed upbeat into a zap, all with some crunchy proto FX for good measure.

Allscillator provides the waveforms patched through This is Not Rocket Science's Switch utility. From there the audio is routed into our prototype FX, modulated by Wobbler 2's self-phasing LFO and phase shifted to produce the stereo effect. Finally, we use TiNRS' Ardabil to scale and offset CV for some extra frequency control.

Meet the Telmatronics Groovetube Tube Based Prototype Plasma Synthesizer

video uploads by Telmatronics

via Telmatronics Kickstarter

Make crazy sounds with fluorescent tubes, that you can control with a magnet

A project to create a plasma instrument About a year ago, we discovered a lot of fun could be had with a fluorescent tube and a magnet... Lit fluorescent tubes are filled with plasma - a low pressure electrified gas that can make oscillations at audible frequencies. With suitable control over the plasma in the tube, we found this instability could sound amazing... and could also be controlled with a magnet! (It is worth listening to the video with headphones, to hear details of the sound).

Playing with sound created in a glowing tube is tactile, surprising and absorbing, and we decided to develop a new kind of electronic instrument.

We are releasing this first-generation machine for people to try out a new way to make noise. It is a sort of proto-instrument - an experimental machine to be experimented with!

Having machines out in the world will help explore what is possible, as there is a lot of unexplored territory here - we don't have much audio equipment, and have tried a dozen or so tubes. By making these machines available now, we hope to not only fund further development but also let collective experimentation inform its direction.

There are pros and cons to using commercial tubes for this. The sound from different fluorescent tubes can vary considerably, so trying out a new tube is an inexpensive bit of fun. It is currently possible to find various types of suitable (T5, 9"/ 225 mm, 6 W) tubes potentially available, new and old stock. On the downside, these tubes are being phased out in the very near future (about 18 months in the UK), and they will become increasingly scarce as production declines - bad timing to find a new use for them! We will keep testing different tubes however, and secure adequate supplies of some good ones before they disappear. In the longer term our objective is to produce custom tubes, which will require further research and development.

We are offering this first on Kickstarter, as a good way to generate awareness of what we are doing and to generate funds to get the project going properly.

SOMA Synths Terra - First Look at the Production Unit & Factory Tour

video upload by sonicstate

"We were invited to visit Soma Sound Machines at their Warsaw factory and while we were there were shown the pre production model of the Terra - the unique and very sensitive instrument . Terra features twelve extremely sensitive nodes (cant think of what else to call them!) for playing pitches, plus five for modifying the timbre, there are also 7 modifier knobs which globally effect the sound with two being dependent on the algorithm used.

Despite the wooden case, Terra is a digital sound source and has multiple models which are played rather like instruments, each model has 64 variations. As usual, its a rather off the wall concept, but thats what makes Soma the way it is. In practice, its incredibly sensitive and flexible - reminds us of the Eagan Matrix instruments found in the Haken Continuum or the Osmose.

The Terra will be in production very soon and making its way into the stores."

You can find additional Terra posts here.

VISIT: SOMA Sound Machines Factory in Warsaw

video upload by

"A couple of weeks back we were invited to visit the Soma Sound Machines factory in Warsaw, Poland. As well as a look at the first production models of the expressive Terra instrument, we got a look around their place.
PCBs and components are delivered here, the Through Hole hand soldered components are put onto the boards, any SMD (surface mount design) parts are sent off to the machine, units are tested put into the cases and shipped to distributors and customers. Lyra 8 , Kosmos, Pulsar-23 and Ether are made here and pretty soon the new Terra will be too.

Its actually a pretty cottage style industry, surprisingly small but also very efficient."

Game Audio Vocal Sound Design With Soundtoys

"Whether making subtle enhancements or radical transformations, watch how effects can alter the character of a voice and create a truly immersive experience. The presets you hear are:

Angry Stereo – A gritty and stereo-lizing fx that makes the vocal sound bigger than your speakers.
Fever Dream – A fast-paced distorted panning movement to disorient any vocal.
Waterpipe – A feedback-heavy metallic-sounding echo with a short delay time.
Angry Radio – A nostalgic sound that resembles old-school radio-filtered distortion.
Robot Laugh – A re-sampled and pitch-shifted quick slap robotic echo for any vocal sources.
