Prophet VS in for a major service

video upload by Espen Kraft

"I finally gave the VS some TLC. It's been sitting there unused for quite some time due to very glitchy buttons, a almost unreadable display and a PSU that was on it's last dying breath.
A new PSU, new display, a new set of switches were among my priorities leaving this with my tech.

I wearing a t-shirt from https://www.tshirtgrill.com

The power supply that's been installed can be found here:
https://synthronics.de/sci-sequential...

The rest of the new components can be found with the help of Google. ;-)

A big thanks to the tech Trond Gribbestad Lund for good work, and to Anders Jensen for taking a Saturday off to shoot the tech at work. Thanks guys!"

Sound design comparisons - Roland Jupiter 6 vs Sequential Prophet 10 vs Roland JD-800

video upload by MIDERA

"For some reason I really wanted to do an experiment where I sit down with the Jupiter 6 and Prophet 10 and just explore how they sound as I go through the settings/parameters. At the end, I would ask myself - which one do I like best? And then I thought, why not add something completely different. So I did. I added the JD-800.

I wanted to keep the comparison consistent in one way: they would be routed (mono) through the Strymon El Cap and then given the same amount of reverb. So the only difference is what's going on in the synthesizer itself.

It feels like a bit of a failed experiment because 1) their levels were hard to control (it's not patch comparisons so I don't think "X sounds better than Y because it's louder), so hopefully that's ok, and 2) they all kind of sound good in completely different ways.

My actual EXPERIENCE was that I much preferred using the Prophet 10. I think I like the sounds from the Jupiter 6 or JD800 best, but the JD800 has advantages (plethora of different waveforms) and disadvantages (no sync or cross mod).

So what did I learn from this endeavor? Probably nothing, but I haven't actually sat to listen to my work, so I don't actually know yet."

Behringer Introduces The Smallest Full Featured Synth in History? JT-4000 Micro

video upload by Behringer

"Introducing the Behringer JT-4000 Micro a Portable 4-Voice Hybrid Synthesizer with 2 Analog Modelling Oscillators Per Voice, Analog Filter and Arpeggiator."

New Behringer Micro Line. The JT-4000 is based on the JP-8000. Only 4 voice polyphony vs. 8 though. I still don't understand the 4 voice poly thing, especially when it comes to digital synths. What's interesting is the JP-8000 is a digital software based synth. Aside from the Prophet-VS, Behringer has been mainly focused on cloning discrete analog designs. Discrete analog is typically easier to clone as the components are usually visible and traceable. Not so much with software synths based on code alone. Curious if the "Analog Filter" is analog or digital like the JP-8000.

Sequential Circuits Prophet VS - Serviced W/16bank Memory Cart & FlightCase

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Pics of the inside below.

The synth was serviced a couple of years ago and has seen little use since while It stays covered in a clean studio. All buttons and display are new and the CEM 5530 chips which are known to fail have been replaced with the infamous Straylight Engineering clones. The 1.3 "Shalebridge" OS was installed and battery recently checked good at 3.05v. All keys, joystick, knobs, wheels, jacks work great. The aftertouch still works, which is rare for this model but you have to press with some force and the synth needs to be resting on a flat surface as recommended by Sequential. There are some blemishes on the side panels as seen in the image highlighted by the sunlight but in reality it's minor and the face/panel looks great. It's been very reliable for me over the years and is a pleasure to play. A power cord and manual are included plus an amazing 16 bank cart full of sound banks including all of the originals. Comes with a custom fit case that could use some new foam but will protect the synth as it will be carefully packed in the case and then boxed/packed again."

CHROMA POLARIS vs AKAI AX60: Live Sound Demo and Comparison!

video upload by Vulture Culture

"Tonight we're checking out two "cold"-sounding vintage synths from the 1980's LIVE! We're comparing the Fender Chroma Polaris, a 6 voice VCO analog synth and the Akai AX60 and 6 voice VCO analog synth! We'll start with the oscillators, check out the filters, the LFO's, arpeggiators, sequencers and all the other features of these two synths.

A big reason these synthesizers sound so similar is they both use Curtis Electromusic Specialties aka CEM chips. These "synths-on-a-chip" components were used as far back as the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 and Oberheim OB-Xa. They're known, especially the later chips, for sounding "cold" as far as analog synths go.

Specifically the Akai AX60 uses 6 CEM3394 chips, which contain a VCO, VCF and VCA on one chip. The Chroma Polaris uses 6 CEM3374 Dual VCO chips and 6 CEM3372 Filter, Mix and VCA chips, which is the same chipset used by the legendary Oberheim Matrix 12.

The biggest difference in terms of sound is the Polaris has two VCO's per voice but the AX60 only has one - BUT the AX60 has a trick up its sleeve. It has PWM on ALL waveforms, which lets you fake a detuned sound, as well as sounding beautiful in it's own right.

I'm really excited to see which of these two synthesizers reign supreme tonight! Scum one, scum all and scum as you are!"

Prophet 12 - How Analog can it sound? - *Only P12 Effects Used*

video upload by Scott McAuley Sounds & Synthesis

Additional Parts

"Busy working away on the next Custom Bank, and I find myself asking, Why do so many people say the P12 doesn't sound analog enough??, I get the whole DCO vs VCO debate will never end, but considering this synth was made way before the 'vintage' mode was developed, it can still sound remarkably warm and full of character.

This patch utilises the Binaural stack, only saws, but modulated, touch of LFO on filter, LFO modulating the P12 delays, and it sounds Lush, Warm and Very very analog to me.

I'm interested to hear the current opinions on this fantastic synth. I for one fully understand why the late Dave Smith pegged this as his favourite ever creation.

Custom Banks will be available at https://www.orano.co.uk/shop

thanks for watching.

Behringer Pro 800 vs Prophet 600 // SOUNDS ONLY

video upload by Starsky Carr

"While I'm putting the finishing touches to my full comparison video here's some sounds to demo the similarities and differences between the Behringer Pro-800 and an original vintage Prophet 600 with the GLiGLi upgrade.

Simpler tones can be copied easily as the raw tone is all there in the oscillators. The filter envelope amount, sustain and cutoff work together slightly differently than the original so adding filter envelopes makes things a little more difficult, add to that the linear envelope shapes aren't the same - GliGLi updated the linear model in 2022 to reflect a more natural Prophet 5 Rev1/2 curve but this isn't in the Behringer. Plus Behringer have made the Pro-800 snappier, so the envelopes are not going to match on every occasion... not an issue in any way, every Prophet 600 with different GliGli firmware will be slightly different I imagine too... unless everyones updated to the 2022 version.

Other differences include the Poly-Mod, filter and LFO modulation ranges aren't as wide in the Behringer"

DSI PolyEvolver Rack w/ Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"These are rare. From home nonsmoking studio. I'm the original owner. Comes with Power supply and orginal manual, even an original shipping box. Recently serviced by Sequential ssupport.

If the buyer wants I will work with Soundtower to transfer licenses for PolyEvolver Editor and Evolver PlugSE licenses that make working with this synth a joy. PlugSE is a VST plugin so you can manipulate it inside your DAW. These licenses are worth $70 f you had to buy them.

If you already own a standalone Evolver or keyboard this rack adds four voices for 5 voice polyphony

An analog/digital hybrid, the four-voice Poly Evolver Rack features four oscillators per voice— two analog and two digital (the digital oscillators feature the waves from the legendary Prophet VS). Classic Curtis analog low-pass filters and real analog VCAs pdd ample warmth and girth to the analog section while the digital high-pass filter, tuned feedback, and digital distortion provide sizzle and grit.

Imagine being able to move effortlessly from thick analog smoothness to crisp digital edge—or anywhere in between—and you begin to get the picture. The LFOs, step sequencer, and three separate delays can all be synced for complex, evolving, rhythmic, time-based effects in true stereo."
