The original Doctor Who theme (1963) remains one of the most extraordinary pieces of electronic music ever made for television. Pioneer Delia Derbyshire constructed its otherworldly sound through tape manipulation, oscillators, filters, recorded tones, and painstaking editing, transforming the score into something that seemed to arrive from another dimension.

For this version, electronic musician Lorna Dune turned to the Dreadbox Erebus: an analog paraphonic synthesizer whose oscillators, filter, modulation, and wonderfully unruly character felt right at home in the strange sonic universe Derbyshire helped create.

Terry Michaels, AKA Terry Mikulic, designed the seminal relaxation-core oscillator published in Electronotes 62 by Bernie Hutchins: the highly accurate ENS-76. It is the most influential analogue oscillator design of the modern era. This circuit became the heart of hundreds of synthesisers, including Gene Stopp’s ASM-1, the Synthesizers.com Q106, and the muSonics Vanilla Oscillators. Through his synthesizer work, Terry founded a laser light show company called Laser Artistry in 1976. The company operated as one of America's elite laser show outfits until its final performance on December 31, 1999.

The annual catered banquet will be held Saturday, September 12, 2026 at 7pm in the Sapphire Pavilion. Tickets are available as an add-on to your Knobcon attendance. Seating is limited."

"When I first encountered Norman Freund's score, I noticed the shapes were sketched quite roughly. In order to implement the score in a structured way, I made the decision to 'quantize' the original drawing to a grid. I hope I have suceeded in maintaining Norman's intent for the piece.

I decided on a grid of 64 'bars' at 120 bpm (each bar 2 seconds) Total time = 128 secs - 2:08

I identified common types of graphic entities in the score which would act in a similar sonic way and decided that there would be no implication of pitch in the score, just timing.

Colors were assigned to each type of graphic for visual and compositional reference:
Red - vertical line with spiral top
Light Blue - vertical line
Pink - horizontal line
Dark Blue - horizontal line with circle incorporating clockwise arrow indicator
Orange - rounded rectangle
Green - divergent lines (crescendo mark) and convergent lines (decrescendo mark)

Each entity in the score was recorded from a modular setup and arranged in the DAW (Reaper).
The sound palette came from the various reels of the project iterations.

Below are descriptions of two different ways in which sounds were mapped to graphics:
1. The Green divergent/convergent lines are the most persistent entities in this score. They are treated algorithmically. Each green entity has a different splice from "12 string iteration 0 reel". The methodology was to speed up each splice in Morphagene forwards from 0 to 100% (Green light) precisely over the time specified in the quantized score by the divergent lines and then back to 0 in the same way as specified by the convergent lines. For this I researched and discovered the Rossum Control Forge and used this to apply the precise voltage over time. An interesting technique learned and likely not one I would have considered otherwise.
2. The Red shape is a composed (ie non-algorithmic) collage of the individual sounds from iteration 3.

Other modules used were QPAS, Wogglebug and Mordax Data."

Flexur spooky jam

"Testing Flexur, our standalone expressive #synthesizer inspired by #trautonium

In this firmware revision. Lauri iterated on the code that holds notes on while you’re sustaining a touch.

The last firmware revision improved noise performance, but led to a large increase in dropped notes. Is it possible to improved the noise without dropping to many notes?

Based on this jam, it seems like the answer is yes. Flexur felt very physical. Dare I say: I felt like I was starting to shred on it. I was playing most of my bag of ideas from jamming on “my funny valentine”. The chromatic descending bass line is very comfortable for an intermediate player like me, so I keep getting pulled back to it. I hope that more advanced players will be able to find more variety in chord changes.

I like how this video shows a few different ideas about how to arpeggiate and play chords. I also play this slightly corny riff that just wiggles between 5 and b5. It shows how with a little bit of pizzaz or personality the simplest motifs can stay interesting for a long time. That’s only possible on an expressive interface.

Dutch STEIM Zwarte Dozen Systeem - Sound Demo with Novanex Delay.

"Short jam of patching with the rare Dutch modular synth system that started out around 1974 within the STEIM Studio for Electro-Instrumental music.

Since 2022 Veerle (Elektortek) got her hands one this system, in total consisting out of 4 rows of "cassettes"/modules (34 total modules, 4x patch matrices). It needs quite some servicing and repair, but als a lot of cassettes survived the forces of time.

Since last year the system is based at Acid Solder Club Utrecht, Veerle's creative electronics/ DIY and synth workshop and experimental sound studio based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Together with a small team (herself, Rob vd Poel and Sybren Danz) we are searching for documentation, video materials, schematics and all kinds of doodled and sketched info, that most unfortunately, is lost in time.

We are currently also working on a digital archive with stories, patch ideas, a new service manual and repair blog.The process is slow, since a lot of information is lost and we are looking at similar circuits at the time, and digital and book references to help the build.

Disclaimer: This is an unofficial add-on to the M user manual, describing some of extra features added from firmware 1.05 up to firmware 1.11. This add-on also covers some complex aspects of the Multi Mode, which remains somewhat unusual.

Algorithms of FW version 1.11:

Varysaw: A VA oscillator ranging from SAW through PULSE to TRI.

Wave (red encoder): Mixes from 0 to 31 from SAW to PULSE; 32 is pure PULSE, and 33 to 63 mixesfrom PULSE to TRI.

Meta parameter: Pulse width for PULSE, adjustable from 5% to 95%.

CSAW: A famous Yamaha CS-80 saw oscillator with mutation towards a parabolic oscillator.

Wave : Controls the amplitude of the “step” component of the saw wave.

Meta parameter: Mixes between this saw wave and the parabolic saw wave.

Waveshpr: A SAW to TRI oscillator fed into a mild waveshaper.

Wave : 0 is pure SAW, 1-62 mixes between SAW and TRI, and 63 is pure TRI.

Meta parameter: Depth of the waveshaper.

TriplSaw: A stack of three SAW oscillators; two are detuned slightly higher and lower than the third.

Wave : Controls the amplitude of the “central” SAW oscillator relative to the two “side” SAWs.

Meta parameter: Detuning factor, from 0 to maximum detune.

S/T Fold: A SIN wave folding oscillator that folds the chosen crossmixed wave between SIN and TRI waves.

Wave : 0 is pure SIN, 1-62 mixes between SIN and TRI, and 63 is pure TRI.

Meta parameter: Folding depth.

FM 2 OP: Classic simple two-operator FM synthesis. OP1 (modulator) generates a sine wave that modulates the phase of OP2 (carrier). Both operators generate sinewaves; the algorithm's output is the carrier signal.

Wave: Maps values from 0 to 63 to harmonics ratios of 1 to 8 in stepped increments.

Meta parameter: Amount of phase modulation applied to the carrier.

In this recording of the evening, Priscilla and Stijn Haring-Kuipers present their latest Eurorack modules, the legendary Fenix IV, and provide insights into their creative applications for experimental sound design.

Special attention is given to modules such as BOPP & STEVE, which beautifully demonstrate how far reverb and effects processing can be taken in a modular context. The presentation is complemented by a live performance by Serge Jansen, Priscilla, and Stijn, who use TiNRS modules in a hardware-based modular live set and demonstrate their strengths in a stage context.
