"Wanna just hear the Sequential Fourm? Here's a no talking demo I made for Sequential. Fourm is a 4 voice analogue polysynth with a sort of Pro One old skool aesthetic. It's a simple synth but I felt has class for days, weighty and bright, but can cut through. It's also tiny, but the controls are well spaced.

The video features Fourm alone, with UA Golden reverb, Boss DD-7 delay, and alongside the Roland T-8 and sequenced by Xynthesizr on iPad for some small vignettes/musical sketches.

It literally has volcano in it(!) And after this interview, I thought about it a lot. Because behind the scenes, I've been working on a product and so much of what Óli said here resonated with my own experiences. I was really struck by how open, candid and frank Óli was, and I think there's huge value in learning from their journey. Hope you find this interesting!

This is one of the best pieces of hardware I tried last year and I approached them to make this. Ministyler is like a baby stereo Sherman filterbank (yes, the '96 classic desktop filter) in a 'RODEC One' box with two slots for other 'RODEC One' modules, and is deceptive in depth despite how simple the panel looks. You'll hear it here mostly on drum machine - my favourite use I found - but also on Tenori-on & Nord Lead 2 with CV input used. It's nuts."

39C3 - From Silicon to Darude Sand-storm: breaking famous synthesizer DSPs

Have you ever wondered how the chips and algorithms that made all those electronic music hits work? Us too!

At The Usual Suspects we create open source emulations of famous music hardware, synthesizers and effect units. After releasing some emulations of devices around the Motorola 563xx DSP chip, we made further steps into reverse engineering custom silicon chips to achieve what no one has done before: a real low-level emulation of the JP-8000. This famous synthesizer featured a special "SuperSaw" oscillator algorithm, which defined an entire generation of electronic and trance music. The main obstacle was emulating the 4 custom DSP chips the device used, which ran software written with a completely undocumented instruction set. In this talk I will go through the story of how we overcame that obstacle, using a mixture of automated silicon reverse engineering, probing the chip with an Arduino, statistical analysis of the opcodes and fuzzing. Finally, I will talk about how we made the emulator run in real-time using JIT, and what we found by looking at the SuperSaw code.

This talk is a sequel to my last year's talk Proprietary silicon ICs and dubious marketing claims? Let's fight those with a microscope!", where I showed how I reverse engineered a pretty old device (1986) by looking at microscope silicon pics alone, with manual tracing and some custom tools. Back then I claimed that taking a look at a more modern device would be way more challenging, due to the increased complexity.

This time, in fact, I've reverse engineered a much modern chip: the custom Roland/Toshiba TC170C140 ESP chip (1995). Completing this task required a different approach, as doing it manually would have required too much time. We used a guided automated approach that combines clever microscopy with computer vision to automatically classify standard cells in the chip, saving us most of the manual work.

The biggest win though came from directly probing the chip: by exploiting test routines and sending random data to the chip we figured out how the internal registers worked, slowly giving us insights about the encoding of the chip ISA. By combining those two approaches we managed to create a bit-accurate emulator, that also is able to run in real-time using JIT.

In this talk I want to cover the following topics:

How we tricked the chips into spilling its own secrets

Rhythm is Timbre. Timbre is Rhythm. In the world of Luna, there is no difference between a sequencer and an oscillator. The same digital pulse that drives a bass line can be accelerated into a screeching lead or folded into a metallic drone.

5 oscillators provide the raw material. A chaotic array of logic blocks (XOR, NOT, AND, shift registers, counters, multiplexer) will chew up those signals and spit out complex, evolving mathematical noise.

Taming the Digital Mess. Raw logic can be harsh. To turn this binary chaos into music, Luna feeds its digital soul through 3 organic low-pass gates. These analog circuits impart a natural decay and percussive punch to the madness, transforming mathematical errors into bongos, plucks, and thumping basslines.

Drench it in Atmosphere. Once you’ve constructed your signal, destroy it again. Luna comes equipped with a suite of effects — distortion, delay, reverb, chorus, bitcrusher, phaser and more — to smear your logic into a wash of ambient bliss or gritty industrial texture.

2-way communication:
Two-way communication means the SoundForce controller and a supported plugin can talk to each other in both directions, instead of the controller only sending MIDI data one-way. At this point, this feature is supported with the Arturia Mini V4.

In practice, that creates a far more “hardware-like” experience when using software synths. Change a preset, load a new instance on another track, move a parameter with your mouse and the controller automatically syncs its LED switches, and ingest the pot data in memory. When the received pot data from the plugin differs from the actual pot position on the controller, 3 options similar to Ableton take over modes can be chosen from: jump, pick-up and smoothing.

"This is a no-talking sound demo of the Dreadbox Artemis analog polysynth so you can hear it doing a range of things, without narration or external FX, coming up with track ideas. Drums come from the System 80 880, some sequences from Keystep MKII (and some sequences from Artemis' built-in sequencer - esp 23:14).

This demo was funded by the good people at Dreadbox - thanks for having me play your nice synth! As with all Dreadbox stuff I have tried, it feels and sounds great to me, and I hope that comes across here."

EVIL PET bites incoming audio into tiny grains and plays them in new, playful, or unexpected ways. Stretch, shrink, or flip the grains to create unique sounds, textures, and effects. Layer grains to make dreamy, glitchy, or swirling soundscapes. It works with any input - guitar, voice, synth, or drums - turning ordinary sounds into something magical.

Audio can either come from: the input jacks, the built-in microphone, the built-in FM tuner or loading samples from a microSD card. Grains can be triggered by tactile PLAY key or via connected MIDI or MPE keyboard, allowing for expressive polyphonic performance and live experimentation.
