Ableton Note iOS iPhone Jam, First Impressions of the App

video upload by Expanding Sound

"Ableton Just released Note today, the new sketchpad app for iOS. I downloaded it and spent an hour or 2 with the app. I had some fun making a quick jam with it. A couple thoughts. No panning in mixer mode seems odd to me. Unless i just couldn't figure it out, I didn't see an option to pan. The effects are fun to play with. It seems like a fun program to just pick up and go, but so is Korg Gadget, which also exports to Ableton quite easily. I think I would have been more excited for this program if another more in depth mobile version of Live was introduced alongside this release. But its still fun to play with and sounds nice. This is what I made with it. Hope you enjoy!"

Roland AIRA Compact J-6 / T-8 / E-4 - DEMO by gattobus

video upload by gattobus

"Roland's birthday party it's not over!
A few days ago they sent me these little magic boxes to try them out and in less than an hour of tweaking, I came out with this song!!!
The song title "A Big Tiny World" is because they are BIG sounding TINY boxes indeed! :D
They are:

- J-6 Chord Synthesizer
- T-8 Beat Machine
- E-4 Voice Tweaker

Their sound quality is astonishing! It's amazing to have the power of ACB technology in such a small form factor...
Everything you hear in this video was played and recorded in real time, no post processing or FX was added.
I had so much fun, I hope you like it!"

Buchla Music Easel vs. 208c Command

012358 13

"Just a little jam with Buchla Music Easel and the 208c Command. Both 208s are being controlled by the 218e. All of it is improvised live, mistakes and all. Aside from a minor volume adjustment, no post production was done to the audio. The use of the arpeggiator makes it look as if the video and sound are not in sync, they are.

The card being used is a 208 Toolbox from portabellabz, great little gadget.

The pedal is a Strymon Blue Sky."

Hydrasynth, Slim Phatty, Virus C, Pro 2, Gadget: "Sea Ivory"

Brittle stR music

"Sequencing, risers and percussion are from Gadget. The Phatty plays the hornpipe during the first tutti section, while I tweak the filter cutoff. Virus and Hydrasynth do the main riffs and chords, and live bass is the Pro 2.

Sea Ivory (Ramalina siliquosa) is a pale green branching lichen that grows on the shores of the north Atlantic."

Hydrasynth, Slim Phatty, Virus C, Pro 2, Gadget, Thor: "Celandine"

Brittle stR music

"2 separate time signatures in this one: 6/8 followed by 4/4, then back to 6/8 for the ambient coda (mostly ). I borrowed my wife's iPad/Thor for the live part. The Hydrasynth is a pretty decent VA instrument I'm discovering, even though best known as a wave morphing machine. The 24db/oct ladder filter emulation is lovely. The coda is mostly Helsinki in Gadget, with automation of lots of parameters in both synth and insert FX. Gadget is a massive sequencer now it can control hardware too! I'm constantly charging my iPad tho."

Slim Phatty, Hydrasynth, Virus C, DSI Pro 2, Volca FM, Gadget 2: "Oversea"

Published on Jun 4, 2020 Brittle stR music

"This started with a repeated phrase on the Phatty, which by duplication and subtraction turned into a solo line that sounds like someone ought to be playing it! If I did that live, I’d mess it up. Gadget is sweeping filter cutoff, filter envelope amount and filter decay time on the Moog as it plays. Ambient wash is from the Virus; bass from the Hydrasynth; strings and percussion from Gadget; and I’m tweaking the knobs/sliders on the Volca FM."

From DAW sketch to DAWless song with the Elektron Octatrack MkII

Published on May 30, 2020 Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised track, performed entirely on the Elektron Octatrack MkII. Still in the island cabin, I decided to load some old stems into the Octatrack and see what happened.

Before I got into this all-hardware approach, I stalled out for years making fragments of songs in DAWs; it was really only the immediacy and performability of hardware that got me finishing electronic music with any regularity. So I thought I'd find something not too dusty and transfer it from DAW to DAWless. These are the results.

All the loops are my own, and made primarily with Maschine. Sounds come from a variety of Maschine-compatible formats, including Arturia's V Collection and the Korg Gadget series, as well as the Maschine sample library (the 808, in particular). The main loop of the song adheres pretty closely to my original DAW sketch.

But it's really the Octatrack that takes this from a sketch to a finished song. First, I created an entire second section with the Octatrack, a 'chorus' where the samples are chopped and pitched to a new progression. Second, and critically, I use the Octatrack's scenes to add variation to the samples, to progress through the song from a beginning to an ending, and of course to make things get wild and weird. Scenes are Octatrack magic.

Performed live and uploaded as is, with some limiting on the master (I used the Octatrack's master-level compression for most of the dynamics-shaping).

Sonicware LIVEN 8bit Warps on Kickstarter

Playlist:
LIVEN 8bit warps Intro
Synth engine demo ( WARP, ATTACK, MORPH, FM )
LIVEN 8bit warps x DRUMBRUTE IMPACT Jam & Looper demo

Sonicware previously brought us the ELZ_1 Synthesizer. They now have a LIVEN 8bit Warps synth on Kickstarter.

"Hi! I'm Endo from SONICWARE. We released gadget synth ELZ_1 last year. Our next challenge is the LIVEN series of instruments that we are designing with a focus on live electronic performance. The first in this series is the LIVEN 8bit warps.

LIVEN 8bit warps is combined an 8-bit waveform memory synthesizer with a step sequencer, that we are designing with a focus on live electronic performance.

We are seeking your support to produce the LIVEN 8bit warps through KICKSTARTER crowdfunding. Please help us bring the LIVEN 8bit warps to life!

Carefully selected preset waveforms and editable user waveforms along with high-quality filters and effects can be used freely to create a wide spectrum of sounds. The LIVEN 8bit warps can generate classic retro game sounds of course, but its unique 8-bit sound can also be used in a range of music genres, including EDM, hip-hop, techno and rock.

Powerful functions for live electronic music performance include 16 physical control knobs, parameter locking for each sequencer step, a looper, and SYNC IN/OUT and MIDI IN/OUT connectors to make synchronized performance with other equipment easy.

All these powerful functions are in a device that weighs only 790 g. Play it anywhere at any time.

LUMI + Volca FM [ Live Looper Performance ]

Published on Jan 6, 2020 Little Music Boxes
New Video Published on Jan 7, 2020 - LUMI + Volca FM #1

"This was a fun video to make. Thank you to Jayna my wife who composed that lovely melody 20 years ago.

I was a supporter of the #Roli #LUMI keyboard. I like trying new gear and finding way to pair it with the things I already have. I hope the LUMI helps me improve my piano skill too :)

SETUP:
In this video I have it synced with my iPad (which is off camera). The iPad is using the Korg Gadget app, the Taipei gadget in that let's me send midi info through the iConnect midi cable into the #Korg #VolcaFM. So the LUMI is simply a controller. The audio generated by the Volca FM is then passed to the #EHX Grand Canyon delay and looper pedal. This pedal is adding some effects like reverb, and others. They wet signal is then passed to the "looper side of the pedal" to add new layers to the ongoing loop. So you see a 3 min little cute loop. But I cut out 17 minutes of me trying to look through patch presets. You are welcome. :)

Teenage Engineering OP-Z demo (Aquifex)

Published on Dec 2, 2019 SynthAddict

"I finally got around to making some sort of simple Teenage Engineering OP-Z demo, all programmed/sequenced on the OP-Z (internal FX added to each track) and mixed down live to a stereo recorder and replacing the camera's crappy audio track - no mastering, and some mistakes. :-)

The video shows a tiny bit of the amazing power of this little gray "chocolate bar" gadget.

Here I'm using mute groups to add and remove sequencer parts and realtime performance FX (like the Pocket Operators) like a sort of DJ approach.

More fun stuff to come...

Features not used: step components (the real secret weapon), internal FX tracks or the mastering track, tape FX (like the OP-1), pitch bender, or the installed OPLab connectivity module (in photo - syncs pocket operators, MIDI gear, and modular CV/gate).
This little guy does a lot!

A few extra crazy features of the OP-Z involve running DMX lights and Unity engine graphics from the sequencer (both have their own channels). DMX runs over USB and the Unity channel controls Unity graphics/animation or photos/FX via Bluetooth with files on an iPhone/iPad which can be hooked to a projector for live performance. A true all-in-one solution for some people.
Enjoy!"

And a MATRIXSYNTH card in the pic. :)

I decided to take advantage of the half-price sale for Korg Gadget and related products [until Aug 31st]

After downloading the free Gadget 2 demo for iOS, I downloaded the full version and several of the 'Gadgets' on offer

This is the first track, a mix of live play and some sample shots, hope you enjoy it.

Loopop review: KORG Gadget for Nintendo Switch - before you buy

Published on Apr 30, 2018 loopop

"KORG just released their version of Gadget for Nintendo’s Switch gaming console. Gadget for iOS and Mac are powerful workstations for music production and performance. The big question is, how well does Gadget translate to the world of console gaming? After reviewing it in depth, it seems Korg Gadget for Switch has a different goal in mind, at least in my opinion - certainly for this first version just released - and that goal is real-time, multi-person music creation and jamming.

To see if it accomplishes this goal, I tested it live with my daughter, and the result of our first jam session, for better or worse, is included in this clip.

Gadget contains 16 great core “gadgets”- synths and drum machines covering many forms of synthesis, and it sounds fantastic. You can build a song with multiple tracks (instruments) and scenes (e.g. intro, verse, chorus). Different scales, bar lengths and time signatures are supported, and there is copy/paste/undo functionality which means you won’t be wasting much time putting a track together.

The key differentiating feature as I mentioned above is its multiplayer capabilities. There are two multiplayer modes - one where up to four users all share the same screen and work on the same clip, gadget, mix or song at once, and a second split screen mode where each player gets a quarter of the screen to themselves. All players create the same song, but each can work on a different part, view or instrument, in their corner of the screen. You can’t switch between these modes mid song, which would be a nice future addition. An optional 5 minute timer mode helps keep you focused on finishing a track rather than just noodling…

All that said, if you’re looking for a direct port of the iOS version of Gadget for Switch you’re going to be disappointed. Gadget for Switch is a slimmed down version of its bigger siblings and is missing quite a few key features to be considered a complete digital audio workstation. I’m not sure if this lack of certain features is due to limitations of the Switch platform or just limitations of version 1.0, but things like connecting a USB or Bluetooth keyboard or controller, or audio or project export (aside from limited internal sharing), are just not available. If you want to export your song you’ll need to record it via the audio output or HDMI as I did in this clip.

Aside from the connectivity issues above, it seems like on the software side, this first version was optimized for a “TV mode” experience rather than handheld. Much of the touch screen doesn’t work where you’d expect it to - it’s completely inactive on the Song, Mixer and Clip/Piano roll screens, and only partially active in Gadget view. Hopefully this will be addressed in future updates. There are however some interesting motion play gesture controls that are shown in the clip.

So… what’s the bottom line? If you want to use Gadget on your own as music production digital audio workstation, with this first version of Gadget for Switch, you’re better off with their iOS or Mac versions.

Gadget for Switch is optimized for TV-mode using Switch controllers, with multiplayer gameplay in mind. If you’re looking for a fun experience creating songs with other people, Gadget for Switch is the best game in town."
