Oberheim TEO-5: Tom Sawyer to Techno and DnB Using Its Amazing Filter • TEO-5 Filter Demo #oberheim

video upload by SynthSoniq

"In this Oberheim TEO-5 demo and tutorial, I explore its filter as I walk through how to create the Tom Sawyer patch from Rush’s classic track, I show how I use the arpeggiator and filter for a Techno / Trance riff, and I demo how to use the TEO-5’s Unison “chord mode” to create a DnB pad with a filter sweep.

I think it's good to know how to program a patch like the Tom Sawyer sound, not just because you're trying to play a Rush song, but because it teaches you about filter envelopes, resonance, and the general character of a synth's filter. I like making it on any synth because it gives me a feel for that synth's sound. It's then easy to add some attack to the envelope to turn the patch into a great pad, or decrease the decay to make some cool bass sounds.

Chapters:
0:00 Intro
0:40 Tom Sawyer
3:03 Techno / Trance
5:55 Drum 'n' Bass

Gear used in this video:
Oberheim TEO-5, Boss DR-202 Drum Machine, Zoom R4 Digital Audio Recorder"

"This is a custom built synth made for me by Jos Van Ras who is an ex-Phillips engineer in the Netherlands who builds Elektor modules and cases.

The synth consists of the following modules: 3 x VCO - very powerful VCOs with a Moog vibe and unlike most Elektors, these have Sync inputs and the sync sound is really powerful. 3 x VCF - 3 different VCFs, two based on the original Elektor designs (a 12dB multiode filter, and another filter switchable between 24/18/12/6 dB/octave with LP and HP outputs) and a third based on the Steiner Parker filter which is really nice sounding. 1 x triple LFO - 3 simple LFOs without voltage control but with a variety of waveshapes. 1 x NOISE / RANDOM VOLTAGE 4 x ADSR 2 x VCA 2 x MIXER 1 x quadruple MULTIPLES 1 x RING MOD 1 x S&H / Inverter 1 x COM which is an output module with a 3 band EQ which is surprisingly useful 1 x MIDI to CV converter

This synth offers tremendous bang for the buck, I think it gives quite a Moog feeling in sound. It contains everything you need for a great variety of sounds but you can always patch it with Eurorack or other modular gear. I will post some sound examples as there aren't many good demos online.

The negatives are that the cabinet is just functional MDF, no fancy timber, and the MIDI interface is very basic. I usually use a Kenton for more complex MIDI control."

Pics of the inside below.

"Now this is a beautiful and very rare gem that you will almost never see for sale; This true analog and unique member of the Roland TR family is very cool: it has lots of adjustable trims inside so shape your drum sounds, like inside the CR-78! This also makes this the perfect vintage Roland moddable analog drum machine. Also: individual outs is easy on this one.

This one is of course after not mint anymore after 50 years, but honestly; despite a few wood flaws it actualy looks very nice still, certainly comparing to other units I have seen.

On the technical side: it works for the most part. On the main output everything seems normal, besides the volume balance seems not entirely accurate, but I have nothing useful to compare. The internal speaker does'nt seem to pass the bass drum. The speaker has been disconnected before for shipping [because not all countries accept speakers being shipped the quick way], maybe something was not re-attached properly. Therefor is sold as 'kind of working but needs technical service'. So sold AS-IS. No returns or [partly] refunds if anything other then described is not working properly. Maybe I am over-accurate here, just want to tell an honest story where others just hope for the best advertising crap as 'in good condition'. Hope you appreciate it!

Volume is rewireable to 120v, its now set to 100V. I have never seen this unit on European voltage to be honest. For all higher voltages you need a simple step down transformer. Or give it a new replacemnet transformer when you are servicing this beast."

Craig Padilla - JOURNEYS THROUGH SPACE - Live June 1990 FULL CONCERT SHASTA COLLEGE THEATRE

video upload by Craig Padilla

From below:
This music was created without the use of sequencers; all of the background music was recorded in real-time on reel-to-reel tapes. I used a Kawai K1 synthesizer, a Siel DK-80 synthesizer, and a Roland TR-505 drum machine. A Peavey AddVerb II was also used for effects. For this show, I was loaned a portable Casio Midi Controller, which I connected to the Kawaii synth to use for the song "Destiny's Flight."
"Please consider donating a much appreciated monetary tip to:

Notes from Craig Padilla:
This was my first public performance on June 8, 1990. It was at the Shasta College Theatre in Redding, CA, and it was my college final project for my Creative Sound Design class. Many people involved with the theater department helped out with this project.

I came from a theatrical background, and I had been used to facing the audience, which is why I performed while facing the audience during this show. My Uncle Joe saw this video and suggested that I should perform sideways so that the audience can see what I'm playing. Thanks to that advice, I've been performing that way ever since. This concert is the only time that I've performed while facing the audience.

This music was created without the use of sequencers; all of the background music was recorded in real-time on reel-to-reel tapes. I used a Kawaii K1 synthesizer, a Siel DK-80 synthesizer, and a Roland TR-505 drum machine. A Peavey AddVerb II was also used for effects. For this show, I was loaned a portable Casio Midi Controller, which I connected to the Kawaii synth to use for the song "Destiny's Flight."

Please be mindful of the visual quality of this video. It has been remastered from standard definition and upscaled to 1080p HD with audio remastered from a chrome stereo cassette tape. I am fortunate that it looks and sounds as good as it does.

The original broadcast video aired on Redding Community Access TV in 1990 and 1991. It was shot on VHS tapes from two camera angles and edited on a Super VHS tape. Unfortunately, the audio on the broadcast video was recorded from the main onboard camera microphone, which had a muddy sound. (At the time, I thought that it was better to use that audio than to have no publicity for my music.) 35 years later, thanks to current technology, the stereo audio from the master cassette tape has replaced the original audio track. It has been pitch-corrected to sync up with the video, which is something I never thought would be possible! The video was also enhanced to brighten some of the shots.

There is a small black bar on the second camera angle, and that was to cover up a graphic date that was imbedded in the video of that camera. I had decided that the black bar was less distracting than a graphic on the screen whenever I switched to that camera.

I am fortunate that I knew people who would loan me their cameras for this performance, and equally thankful to my friends who offered their time to operate the cameras!

Matt Denton, a long time friend from high school, was the main camera operator. I met Bryan Arnold while attending college. Bryan loaned me his Kawaii synthesizer for the music, and was the second cameraman who had to briefly step away to perform a song. T. Owen Smith designed the light show, and he suggested that I throw a flame out of my hand at the end of the last song. I had known Dwight Husted since high school, and he was the lighting operator who ran the light-show. My college friends, Jeff Yarnell, Karen Wodsack, and Dale Gipp, were the stage crew who also contributed the idea to use actors in body bags and dress as aliens for a song. And Dale Kilpatric helped me produce the show, and he performed with his amazing classical guitar for a song. (More people helped, and their names are listed in the end-credits of the video.)

Over 100 people attended the performance which was a benefit for the Shasta Summer Theatre Festival. I give many thanks to DJ Ron Dare for hugely promoting my music on his radio show, "KCHO's Music for A New Age" in 1989 and 1990 (and years beyond that). Also, thanks to Robert Soffian, the head of the theater department, for allowing me to not only act in his plays, but to also have me record many songs for the various theatrical productions during that time. And many thanks to everybody who helped to make this concert possible so many years ago.

Extra big thanks to everybody who supported my music then and continues to support it now.

Song list:
00:00 - KCHO DJ Ron Dare Announcement
02:30 - Shanda's Song
08:05 - Waltz of the Planets (dedicated to my friend Derrick Guderian)
14:15 - Spanish Journey (featuring Dale Kilpatric on guitar)
19:50 - Destiny's Flight (dedicated to my Grandmother)
30:43 - Path of the Falling Stars (featuring Bryan Arnold)
36:00 - UFO Theme
42:05 - Other Beings (featuring many theater friends)
47:45 - Journeys through Space

A 24-bit download of this performance will be available at www.CraigPadilla.com [https://craigpadilla.bandcamp.com] in November 2025."

"Nice condition vintage analogue 'Symphonic Ensemble' polysynth / string synth / organ with excellent control over tremolo, ensemble and vibrato. With three outputs you can send different parts to different effects. The string volume pedal is also very effective at breathing life into sounds. There is a multi-pin output for a rotary speaker - not checked. But everything else was serviced in 2024. As usual, the massive wood-veneer endcheeks are not in perfect condition, but the control surface and keys are very good. Serial number 8632, switchable voltage, currently with a UK plug. These are solid machines: packing 18GBP."

"Original Sequential Circuits Pro-One synthesizer in very good condition. Only one owner since new, the Norwegian synth band Fra Lippo Lippi. The synth is considered by many as one of the best mono synths ever. It is in original form, only the power had has an upgrade (new caps), and it has been cleaned inside and outside, fully calibrated and ready for use. All knobs are original, and all functions work as they should. One slider knob has ever so slightly contacts problems, but it has been cleaned and re-lubricated, so it works fine, but care might be needed. Or it could be changed to a new one. We choose not to do that to keep the complete synth original. The keyboard is original too, and might need new bushings if you are a keyboard player. All interfaces work, and of course it sounds brilliantly!"

Harmonium VST FREE With Crow Hill VAULTS

video upload by CROW HILL

"With Theo off on hols this week Christian opens the lid on one of his favourite instruments, The Harmonium. Think Penguin Cafe Orchestra, think Jon Brion, think a leading (albeit inanimate) character in Punch Drunk Love."

Press release follows:

The Crow Hill Company announces availability of VAULTS - HARMONIUM, bringing bellows to DAWs as latest free VI abiding by its Make Music, Your Music motto

EDINBURGH, UK: The Crow Hill Company is proud to announce availability of VAULTS - HARMONIUM — bringing bellows to DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) as its latest free VI (Virtual Instrument) monthly drop, allowing anyone to experience the timbral complexities and harmonic layers of its gorgeous and, some might say, quaint instrument namesake for the rest of their lives, abiding, as always, by the Edinburgh-based enterprise creators’ collective Make Music, Your Music motto — as of October 24…

Its iconic appearance in Director/Writer Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2002-released dark romantic comedy Punch: Drunk Love — look it up! — may make many think of the harmonium in a certain way. What is certain, though, is that the small free-reed organ was patented way before, back in 1842 by Frenchman Alexandre Debain. By being smaller and less expensive than traditional pipe organs, it quickly became popular through Europe, India, Africa, and the southern United States. Travelling through the north of the UK, harmoniums can still be found tucked away in the corners of many recording studios. Saying that, those that are there are not just set dressing; after all, the harmonium captured the hearts of artists such as The Beatles, Supertramp, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and Tori Amos, all of whom featured it in their music.

Making music with a harmonium is easier said than done, however, since the instrument in question generates sound by pumping air — using two foot-operated pedals joined to a mechanism that operates a bellows or by pushing and pulling a handle joined to the bellows back and forth with one hand — past a thin piece of metal in a frame and making it vibrate. Vibrations then resonate through the harmonium’s wooden body, thereby producing the distinctive, church-like sound. Thankfully, The Crow Hill Company has succeeded in capturing this sound to produce VAULTS - HARMONIUM, making it much easier for many more appreciative sound-seekers to experience its musical magic.

Composer Christian Henson — original founder of The Crow Hill Company — freely admits to being a big fan: “It’s got to be one of my favourite instruments. It can bring a simplicity to music — dare I say it, a quaintness, but because of its timbral complexities, it’s also massively expressive.”

via JULIEN*S

"THE FLORIAN SCHNEIDER COLLECTION

Auction to be held at Musician's Hall of Fame & Museum, Nashville, on November 19

An incredible collection of more than 450 artifacts from the life and career of Florian Schneider, co-founder of the pioneer electronic band Kraftwerk."

Pics and videos featuring some of the gear below, and his Lederhosen for good measure (thanks greg!).

Update: the post has been fully updated with all the synth related gear. This may just well be the longest post to be featured on the site. I wanted to capture all the pics for all of the details including notes, scuffs, and of course serial numbers. It's an interesting look into what he used, the condition he keped his gear, in some cases, how he actually used his gear. Note the phonetics on the keys of the Casio CZ-101 and DX-100. Note the Midi Switch Box with a built-in speaker? What's that about? Note the camouflage key strap on the Korg RK-100 Remote Keyboard. Did he pick it out himself or did the keytar just come with it? Note the repeat midi controllers and the MIDI saxaphones. Wind was his primary instrument. You'll find a ton of the acoustic gear he used in the other listings. This is a fascinating insight into both what and how he used his gear.

Side note: there is no affiliate compensation for this post. The note at the top automatically shows for all posts with the Auction label.

Rack Mount Sennheiser VSM-201 Vocoder

Starting Bid $5,000

Estimate $20,000 - $40,000 USD

A late 1970s Sennheiser VSM 201 Vocoder with no serial number from the personal studio and collection of Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk (see images). While it’s said that only a few dozen of these Vocoders were produced, a few examples made it into the hands of forward-thinking musical artists including Herbie Hancock, Daft Punk, and of course, Kraftwerk, who used a VSM-201 like this on their albums Man Machine (1978) and Computerworld (1981). The VSM-201 has an intelligible sound that has not yet been bested by modern gear. Includes power cable. This VSM-201 has been removed from its wooden enclosure (which bears the serial number plate) and modified with a metal rack mount casing, presumably for live use. Requires 240v, IEC power cable not included.

Dimensions: 19 x 9 x 9 inches

Category: Kraftwerk, Equipment

Provenance: PROVENANCE From the Estate of Florian Schneider

"Another item from the ARP collection: Here's the original vintage Black and Gold-finished Mk I ARP AXXE model 2312 - with unit's serial number 2312 ! - at an affordable entry-level point. It has original ARP upgrade PPC kit yet installed replacing the rotary pitch bend knob. A white overlay is provided for the signal flow diagram (see pictures). Optionally, as the original front panel graphics are gone, we’ve given it a nice touch with hand-painted gold detailing. Like its sibling the Odyssey, the AXXE has its own unique voice: while you’ll get that unmistakable ARP analog character, it also can opens the door to a variety of sounds — from thick, punchy basses to bright, sizzling leads — all for a fraction of the cost. Plus, it’s got a few fun tricks up its sleeve that you can appreciate on this explicit video from Starsky Carr: https://youtu.be/-6NHVLVJgpA?feature=shared . In working condition overall, though there’s a bit of crackling here and there, so a good cleaning is recommended - sold as is. As a great bonus are the connections on the back allowing an external synth or signal to be processed along with CV, Gate and Trigger inputs and outputs plus a control pedal input for the filter. Standard IEC power lead not included. [ If you’re purchasing from outside the EU, please be ready to provide any details that might be needed — thanks for understanding! ] Will be packed thoughtfully."

"Good luck, Astronauts" - on Wersi Comet

video upload by organfairy

"It's funny how music for science fiction movies has changed over the years: Back in the 1950's the movie 'Forbidden Planet' was noted for it's out-of-this-world music that was played on non-musical electronic instruments - instruments designed more for laboratory and experimental use.
Later in the 1960's science fiction music was more about rhythmic beeps and weird tingling sounds - the beeps probably inspired by the radio signal that the Soviet satelite Sputnik send down to earth while it circled the globe outside the atmosphere.
Later science fiction music was more about lush classical arrangements with some electronic sound effects added.

This piece of music is from the late 1960's and it falls in the beep-and-tingling category. It is written by the Danish organ player Peter Erling but I don't know exactly when it was recorded as there are no indications on the album and both the record company and Erling himself has been dead for decades. I transcibed the music myself and I found some close-enough Sputnik effects on my old Wersi Comet organ."

Pic of the inside.

"Released in 1977, the Yamaha CS30 is the flagship of their CS Monophonic range. It is as close to a modular synthesiser that Yamaha ever made and its modulation and routing options are extensive.
This one plays and sounds great. The synthesiser responds to all the pots and sliders as it should and it's ready to use and create weird and wonderful noises and textures. However, to get it to 100 percent functionality the synth requires a service to fix a few issues. Neither the combined 1+2 audio jack nor headphone output work, though the individual 1 and 2 jacks are fine. The sequencer works when switched to Manual and steps through by pushing the red button. However, the 'Clock' function only works when the synth has been powered on for a while and has 'warmed-up'.

Cosmetically the synth is in pretty good shape with nothing broken or missing. There are lots of very small dots of blistered paint, some with a hint of surface rust. The most noticeable ones are at the top of the control panel but these have not increased in size or number over the past decade-or-so. They don't look too bad, in my opinion. Inside is clean and dry with no signs of damp. One of the C keys has a cigarette burn (WHY??!!!) which has melted the plastic slightly. However, all keys are secure and function correctly. The case has a few marks here and there, but overall it looks good.

The case was designed to make servicing very easy. The front control panel is hinged at the back and can be opened by removing just two screws from each side panel. This then reveals a very neat collection of boards and wiring.

The CS30 can be easily integrated into a modern MIDI studio setup. By using an appropriate converter you can interface various features of the synthesiser via its numerous control inputs and outputs:

Foot Controller (CV) for volume in.

Sequencer CV and Trigger (gate) out.

Key Voltage (pitch CV) in and out.

Trigger (gate) in and out.

External (audio to the filter) in.

It features two voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs), two voltage controlled filters (VCFs - both featuring low-pass, band-pass and high-pass options), two voltage controlled amplifiers (VCAs) and three envelope generators. It also sports a ring modulator and a voltage controlled low-frequency oscillator (LFO).

It is fairly unusual for a hard-wired synthesizer in that it features a variety of switches which allow the user to re-route the signal flow from the usual VCO-VCF-VCA convention. For example, VCO 1 can output a square wave through VCF 1 whilst also outputting a high-pass filtered sawtooth wave through VCO 2. Another example is that the envelope generators can be assigned to any of the VCO, VCF and VCA modules and can also be inverted. Because the LFO is voltage controlled, the oscillating speed can be governed by an envelope generator and different waveforms can be applied to the other modules all at the same time. The CS30 also features an external signal input for filtering other musical instruments and audio sources, which can also be used as a modulation source. It includes an onboard eight-step analogue sequencer."

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this Reverb listing

"This is an xoxbox built poorly by Alien Intercomm. The sequencer seems very buggy, patterns self-erasing, self-changing & sometimes patterns cannot be created, seems like a problem with the O.S.?.. but i'm no expert at either using a 303 sequencer or building 303 clones. The Headphones output is messed up, it has a lot of crackling, random & sudden volume changes & frequency changes so it will most likely need to be replaced. The Main output sounds good. All knobs and buttons function properly but the buttons are recessed lower than they should be. All parts of the synth engine function as they should. I have not tested the MIDI/DIN sync/gate/cv ports. Includes the original power supply. This is a great repair project for anyone with the ability & knowledge to do so or to use for parts for other x0xb0x's."

X1L3 - ARMALYTE is ALLEYKAT - SID 8580 - DEV - 3 voice test - love action - scope render

video upload by X1L3

"More work on the SID module. Another 3 channel test.
Those chorus sections πŸ”₯πŸ‘Œ❤️

The meow song (love action) by the Human league....

The floor is lava..
Baba is you...
And Armalyte is Alleykat 🐱🐾🐾🐾

Project Armalyte is now called Alleykat. My long time feline companion, Maddie, passed away two weeks ago. She would sit and chill with me for hours while i coded and toiled away on this and other projects. She'd see me off when i went to work and be waiting for me when i got home. She'd ride around on my shoulder, sleep on my bed and follow me everywhere. From the scared and timid cat who had a massive alopecia bald patch on her back and who i think had had a bit of a bad life as the frightened girl who crept into my shed all those years ago, she became a gentle, funny and loving companion. She was 18, she was my friend for many years, and i miss her πŸ˜”

The module is now a tribute to kitty cat. And she'll be appearing on the back of it.

Nine lives - no regrets ❤️

Nice cover of the meow song for her. When the module is complete i'll come back and tweak it for a proper demo, where it will be paired up with the song 'tell me when', which also has a meow in towards the end πŸ˜‚

Sounds somewhat like a Hubbard outing for the verses, but then you hit the chorus and it goes full sublime Galway - Ocean loader. It sounds wonderful. in a kept in the loft for 30 years way 😊

Tuning is still as crap as my Korg Monopoly on a good day. But a bit of pitch bend wheel keeps it sweet enough. The day i move it off the breadboard and get a precision reference in there for 1voct tracking can't come soon enough.

Currently waiting for some parts to make the next big leap. This is where the last few registers will become active and all the ringmod/sync/wave mixing kinds of things will come to life.

Than chorus though..
I fucking love this thing.....
The nostalgia feels are something else ❤️❤️❤️"

The best thing: it includes the optional Stereo Piano, Contemporary and Orchestral ROMs, with their reference guides - as well as the massive K2500 series Performance Guide. These are very difficult to get hold of, individually - and having all three installed is a huge bonus."
