"The K4 from Kawai can be thought of as a warm and fuzzy digital synthesizer. A sample-based digital synth, its sounds are those typically weird industrial type sounds that can still be useful in lo-fi, big-beat and trip hop music styles. The sounds are 16-bit preset PCM samples of acoustic instruments. However, unlike its predecessor the K1, the K4 adds a welcomed digital filter section. This truly makes the K4 more flexible, fun and useful for today's filter tweaking music effects!
The XD5 is an awesome drum synth module that has 256 waveforms, four of which can be combined to create a drum sound. It also has great resonant lowpass filters and envelopes for shaping the sounds and is excellent for techno, electro and industrial drums. For effects, a delay type effect is possible as well as a ring-modulator. It also has stereo outputs plus 6 individual outs for the studio pros. Mouse On Mars might use it.
The MM16 is a multi-purpose MIDI data processor with 17 front panel faders. Each of the sliders can be assigned for continuous controller information over any one of 16 MIDI channels, a "velocity mode" that uses the 16 sliders to become a "graphic EQ" for velocity data, and a system exclusive mode for transmitting system exclusive information to control individual synthesizer functions. Setups are included for Kawai K1, K4, K5, Yamaha DX7, and Roland D50. The MM16 can merge two MIDI signals, and can perform MIDI channelizing. You can also use it as a control surface for DAWS"

New Waldorf Protein Synth Leaked
Follow-up to this post.
Some details:
"Waldorf Music has released the Protein, a new 8-voice polyphonic wavetable synthesizer. The instrument combines the technology of earlier Waldorf instruments with modern features in a compact and portable design.
The Protein utilizes the original ASIC oscillators of the Microwave 1, reproducing its characteristic digital vintage sound at a 250 kHz sample rate and retaining the original 8-bit quantization and aliasing characteristics. Its design and architecture are particularly noteworthy. The Protein boasts a new, portable form factor. Measuring 252 x 170 x 48 mm and weighing just 0.9 kg, it is designed for both studio and mobile use.
The user interface is designed for intuitive operation and direct access. At its core, the Protein offers 8 voices and a flexible 4-layer concept that enables complex sound layering, round-robin modes, and polytimbral operation via MIDI. The Load Layer function allows for quick recombination of existing layers from the library. The device stores over 150 factory presets and up to 250 user presets. Each layer has access to an 8-slot modulation matrix for sound design, complemented by modern support for polyphonic aftertouch. A special feature is the "Flavor" control, which adds organic micro-fluctuations to digital sounds.
Modern features from the Iridium family are also integrated, including an arpeggiator, step sequencer, and various effects. The Protein aims to offer an affordable entry into the world of classic Waldorf wavetable synthesis. The official launch of the Protein will take place on November 27, 2025, at 8 p.m. in Berlin. Following the launch, the artist Zavoloka will perform a 30-minute live set using the Protein."
Demos and additional details sure to follow on the 27th. See Waldorf's Comming soon... teaser with audio here.
Update: Additional pics, details, and demos are now up here.

Synthesizers.com is Back with Dan Snazelle of Snazzy FX
via Synthesizers.com
WE'RE BACK!
We are thrilled to announce that Synthesizers.com is returning to full operation — under new management and with a renewed commitment to excellence in all things 5U/MU!
Thank you for your patience as we finished our big transition: relocating the company from Texas to our new home in the Boston area, rebuilding production lines, organizing inventory, and preparing to craft the same world-class instruments you’ve always known us for.
We’re reaffirming our dedication to founder Roger Arrick’s vision while entering a new era for Synthesizers.com. Our path forward is guided by three core commitments:
Commitment One
We will continue to hand-build the highest-quality modular synthesizer instruments here in the USA — crafted with care, precision, and in the spirit of the modular community that has supported us for decades, designed and built for musicians, artists, engineers, performers and hobbyists around the world.
Commitment Two
We will honor the legacy of our existing modules while exploring the boundaries of what’s next. A few legacy modules will retire, and in their place we will design and introduce an exciting new generation of analog and digital modules to expand the Synthesizers.com catalog.
Commitment Three
We will remain dedicated champions for the entire 5U/MU community. That means expanding options for 5U/MU cases, power systems, and accessories — and actively supporting the broader ecosystem of 5U makers, builders, and designers who continue to grow this format.
In the coming weeks, you’ll see updated inventories, new product announcements, and a stronger customer-service focus. Under the leadership of Dan Snazelle of SnazzyFX fame, our team is here for you — by phone, email, social channels, or on the ModWiggler Synthesizers.com forum.
Here are a few words from Dan about the Synthesizers.com journey.
"As someone who has spent the last 30 years involved with synthesizers I am extremely excited to be stepping into the role of leading Synthesizers.com. We have put together a great team so we can continue the tradition of making synthesizers by hand, while also working to bring new modules to our customers. I can't wait to meet people who own our systems and I am also going to be putting a lot of thought into bringing new musicians to large format synthesis" Thank you for welcoming us back. We can’t wait to show you what’s coming.

ART SPRINGER STRIKES AGAIN (free)
Reviewed by Mike Metlay
All right, gang, I know what you're expecting in this space, so I'll oblige you and get it over with. Ready? Here goes: "WAHOOLAZUMA! Everybody's favorite twisted puppy is back from the audio torture chamber, and he's brewed up the most brain-slashing package of monstrous elektronoyze EVER! This stuff's great for warping your brain patterns, killing your cat, etc..."
Okay. Happy now? Good, now let's get serious. I heard from Art recently that he didn't get a terribly good response to his first mailing, and that few, if any, XUG members looked him up for his second set of patches
He seemed in a pretty good humor about it, but I couldn't help wondering if my presentation of his patch set didn't scare a lot of people away just by the wording. So, with a new patch set from Art (more diverse than the first two) in hand, I'd like to try again.
One of the most unhealthy trends I see in today's patch-editing software is the patch randomizer, that cute but overused utility that generates random patches at the click of a mouse. Literally thousands of these random patches are being sold by unscrupulous hackers as "original sounds," and a whole new generation of MIDI morons is springing up (pardon the pun) whose idea of "good programming chops" is the ability to tweak a randomly generated sound into something that (almost) works. No program of this type exists yet for the xpander, and I'm glad of it: the lack of computer-generated garbage on the market forces the user community to seek one another for new ideas, rather than some electronic I Ching. We come together in this Group to share ideas and learn from one another and I believe that studying another human being's work beats watching a computer coughing up random numbers. Which brings us to the music of Art Springer.
In my opinion, these patches are important. VERY important. I get so enthused about Art's work because I see in him a reflection of my college days, when I puttered about with ARP and Buchla modular monsters creating sounds for the sheer joy of it, putting together tonalities never before heard on Earth rather than trying to make a realistic shakuhachi. This was, and often still is, the meat and potatoes of electronic music to me. And when I hear Art telling me that people- Xpander users!-are returning his work because it's "too weird," I know something's wrong. The Xpander isn't a sampler or a digital piano. It's not an imitative instrument by nature. It's a powerful, multiply interfaceable modular synthesizer with a great deal of flexibility. Art Springer takes a stance on its use that no other Group member has had the courage to try: using its Power as a CV percussion device to enhance the sounds of his more traditionally oriented synths. (By the way, Lionel and I are big fans of his music ... it's not as inaccessible as you might think, and the odd tonalities make his dance pieces a lot of fun.) This is a new idea to a lot of you, and I don't blame you for being frightened. But it's better to learn from someone whose ideas differ from yours than to convince a computer to feed you something safe. I'd like to suggest something simple to start with: get one of Art's sound sets, trigger your Xpander with your drumbox, and try writing music with these sounds as part of the atmosphere rather than conventional drum noises. Or do something completely different. The important thing is to try to expand (hm) your horizons to something new. These sounds of Art's do take getting used to, but I think you'll learn a lot from them. Trust me."

"great and very rare semi-modular synth hand made produced in 2009/2011
VolFram is semi-modular noise synthesizer and fx-proccesor based on digital 8-bit echo chip Ht-8970
it can be used as flexible delay/reverb processor, fuzz and complex. All these fx-capabilitys can be mixed and controlled with much flexibility
Only 56 unit were made
It has a very rare Dimitri's modification: very usefull sensitive knob on the right (see pic)
Great for noise/experimental synth, released a few years ago for a specific art project by Russian genious artist ::Vtol:: aka Dmitriy Morozov.
Part of a set of other semi modular machines, it is a stand alone dekstop device that offers different frequencies, from nasty high-pitched noise, to throbbing medium basses. Suggested for artists working with industrial, noise, power electronics, drone, and experimental.
A great piece of artisanship that I didn't use much but was worth the money. released in 55 models
fx-proccesor based on digital 8-bit echo chip Ht-8970.
Needs a BOSS type 9- power supply
demos on line are not as exciting as the machine really does great potential."

Synthesizing waveforms with a frequency divider - a sequel
video upload by organfairy
"I show how it sounds at 4:17 and play it with a keyboard at 5:50
Winter is getting closer so this is the time of year when I start building things. The first of my projects is a revisit to an old idea of synthesizing waveforms with a frequency divider. This time the waveform in question is a sine wave and some other waveforms derived from it.
The old idea is here: • Synthesizing waveforms with a frequency di... [below]
The project is quite a bit more complicated than the previous 'digital' waveform synthesizer as the sine wave is very..... well....wavy, as there are no straight lines like there is in the triangle and sawtooth waves. Therefore I had to take a different approach using a couple of 74LS138 3-8 decoders and an awfull lot of resistors.
The music is my attempt at playing something relaxing on my Wersi Prisma DX-5 organ."
Synthesizing waveforms with a frequency divider
video upload 8 years ago by organfairy
"The demo starts at 4:15.
The normal approach to generating waveforms is to start with a sawtooth wave and then fold it into a triangle wave and schmitt trigger it into a square wave. But it is also possible to synthesize the waveforms by means of a frequency divider and some logic gates. Off course the generated waveforms will be somewhat 'edgy' but that can probably be filtered out and some people might even find it usefull.
The music is something I made back in 2005 on the homemade synthesizers I had then. It's not the best piece I have made but I am still willing to take responsability for it :-)"

Modor NF1 synthesizer
video upload by Brian Schaft
"This song is done entirely with the Modor NF1m synthesizer. Sounds ranging from deep pads to locomotive whistles showcase the flexibility of this digital synth."
