Impact Soundworks Releases Chro-Nyx, New Virtual Synth Based on Classic Hardware

video upload by Impact Soundworks LLC

FULTON, MD – Impact Soundworks has released Chro-Nyx, a virtual synth that faithfully recreates the beloved JP-8080 synthesizer as well as elements from other popular hardware such as the Access Virus, Nord Modular 2, Korg Mono/Poly, Roland Jupiter-8, and others. With extensive oscillators, filter models, effects, and modulation capabilities, this virtual synth (available in VST, AU, and AAX formats via Reaktor Player) allows producers to create a huge range of possible tones.

Developed over the course of 5 years, Chro-Nyx captures the look, feel, and sound of the JP-8080, an early analog modeling synth that revolutionized digital music in the 1990s (most notably by introducing the supersaw oscillator).

Chro-Nyx then goes far beyond their original capabilities, integrating components from other vintage analog and digital hardware, along with unique and custom DSP, resulting in a feature-packed virtual synth workstation suitable for many genres.

Highlights of Chro-Nyx beyond the complete feature set of the JP-8080 include:

Dual oscillators with 31 oscillator types, each with unique parameters, and many emulating specific hardware

Dual filters with multiple topologies, slopes, and 5 styles available, such as ‘Classic’, ‘Acid’, ‘Lush’, etc.

18 filter drive types and a unique ‘BOOST’ mode that allows for extreme distortion and circuit bending-style effects

Dual LFOs that can go from extremely slow to audio rate speeds

Combination step sequencer and arpeggiator with optional trance gate

16-slot modulation matrix with Eurorack-style math sources also available

Dual effects slots with 29 modules available including shimmer reverbs, choruses, waveshapers, etc.

External audio input for processing through the full signal chain

Analog-modeled Pre and Post-FX EQs

8080-style vocoder with expanded controls, as well as 12-band resonant filterbank

Chro-Nyx was developed in partnership with Jasper Broeks (Chrono), a DJ, hardcore artist, and programmer who has worked with numerous well-known artists and performed at many festivals around the world. He creates his own synths under the Pulsecraft name.

“As an EDM musician myself, I’ve been collecting both softsynths and hardware for over 20 years, which is how I know that it takes a lot for a new synth to stand out. But having spent over 50 hours producing with Chro-Nyx, I’m in love, and I can’t wait to hear how other musicians use it!” CEO and owner Andrew Aversa said.

Chro-Nyx is available at the Impact Soundworks store for a limited-time introductory price of $79 (MSRP $99). Crossgrades are available for some customers.

muSonics Lyle: Deep Note

video upload by suitandtieguy

"Deep Note on Lyle, the first properly polyphonic modular synthesizer since the Oberheim Four Voice.

If you have a Moog One, the preset is TK-421 and yes I programmed it. (the very competent marketing department wouldn't let us tag authorship in the patch description.) Page McConnell, you're welcome!

This was a bit more rough-and-tumble than that preset, but might be cooler. It uses polyphonic glide AND envelopes, and I had to do this over and over again to set the voices up to start on the right notes and get the timbre where I wanted it. Amos had to update the firmware for the MIDI-CV modules so the glide time was long enough!

The envelopes are used on 3 of the voices to spread them an octave, a fifth, and a third. the upper voices start on G below middle C and the lower voices start on G above middle C.

I referred back to the score that was published back in 2018 and approximated the notes, but there just isn't enough oscillators to do the whole thing.

There are enough to make it sound good though.

I still used the new Sony camera but recorded it via SDI with one of my Ki Pro recorders because the audio inputs sound MUCH better and it records in Apple ProRes format which Digital Performer can handle without conversion. This is a really cool setup and is so easy to crank this stuff out with. Expect more."

A Eurorack module that gets bored? Seaside Modular Proteus #Knobcon

video upload by CatSynth TV

"We take a look at Proteus from Seaside Modular. It's a Eurorack module that generates melodic patterns, repeating one melody with variations until the module gets "bored" with it, at which point it generates a new melody. There are knobs and CV control for the level of "boredom", i.e., between complete repetition and frequency regeneration, as well as controls for octave, rests, and other variety within a generated pattern. It has several user definable scales for generating melodies and accepts SCALA for additional scales and tunings.

BEST SOUNDING DIGITAL SYNTHESIZER - Synclavier II - Synclav com

video upload by Synclav com

"This month Synhouse starts year number 27.

Synhouse has fully restored and shipped many, many dozens of systems in the last three decades and this work continues in 2025.

Shown here is the testing of a 16-voice setup just before export shipping. These are the later revision SS7X version of the Synclavier II Stereo Option synthesizer voices, playing notes and sustained chords for several minutes while listening.

Relatively few Synclavier 9600s were made, even fewer with the synthesizer voices installed, but those that had them used this exact type of bin (SB25) and voice card (SS7X, eXtended style), plus a very few Synclaviers of the PSxx series used them as well. Synhouse stocks these and Synhouse manufactures these (SB25, SS7X, etc.) and has them in the Synclavier store on the Synclav.com website.

This Little Box Changed Synths Forever | Tom Oberheim’s SEM Story

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

See the full interview here.

"How did the legendary Oberheim SEM (Synthesizer Expander Module) come to life? In this video, Tom Oberheim himself tells the story of how necessity became the mother of invention.
After creating the world’s first digital sequencer, Tom needed a dedicated synthesizer voice to play back the note information generated by the sequencer. His solution was the SEM — a compact, self-contained synth voice that could be sequenced while leaving a musician’s main synthesizer free to perform alongside it. This groundbreaking idea gave players entirely new creative possibilities and laid the foundation for some of the most influential instruments in music history. Join me, along with Rob Rosen (Rosen Sound) and Marcus Ryle (Alesis, Line 6), as we hear directly from Tom about the innovation that started it all.
👉 Discover how the SEM was born and why it changed the future of synthesis."
