BugBrand BugCrush 08 Desktop Filter/Rate Reducer/CV EXP

via this auction
"*Info from Tom Bugs @ BugBrand.
BugCrushers:
BugCrushers are Sample-rate Reducer pedals - I guess I confused things by naming them Crushers - just to be clear, they are not actually Bit Crusher effects! If you look at a standard BitCrush plugin you have controls for Bit Depth (thats the part I can't (yet) do - I work in analogue) and Sample Rate -- my pedals just do the second bit. That's not to say they're sonically lacking - the sound of RateReduction is very fine - at high rates you get fizzly distortionary sounds, while turning down the rate brings you into sounds quite like ring modulation (though perhaps more musical?) - really great for droning!
In technical terms the BugCrusher uses a Sample & Hold circuit running at audio rates. Sample & Hold is found in various analogue synths, but generally running at low frequencies to provide randomised voltage steps. The circuit is often fed from a pure noise source (so you've got randomness) and then clocked by an LFO.
BugCrushers currently come in three standard forms:
BugCrusher08, BabyBugCrusher, BugCrusherMicro

BugCrusher08
"Released Jan08 in a batch of 8
Here's the new and updated big version BugCrusher! Its a desktop unit with quite a complex design (check the block diagram in the photos) that packs in many features -> analogue rate reduction followed by a resonant filter, plus voltage control so that rate and/or filter can be controlled with an external CV or expression pedal.

* Input preamp for guitar or line level signals - switchable Hi or Lo gain plus input level control
* Voltage controlled Crusher circuit ranging from fizzle-highs to drone-tone lows, with a large chickenhead dial for the master CrushRate, plus variable modulation depth from an external source
* Pre-filter mixer to blend the dry and crushed signals - also with switchable phase inversion on the crushed signal for a extra mixing possibilities (audio phase cancellations!)
* Voltage controlled Filter with switchable LoPass or BandPass responses and variable resonance. This has a main Cutoff dial plus variable modulation depth
* Switchable output levels for guitar amps (lo level signal) or mixing desk (hi level signal)
* External input switchable between CV or Foot Pedal, with variable modulation depth for CrushMod and/or Filter Mod - ie, you can use a standard expression pedal to change the Crush Rate or the Filter Cutoff - or both at the same time - or use a CV (standard +/- 5v) signal from an analogue synth
* Electronic true-bypass switching with input socket for an external momentary footswitch - the main big red bypass button is NOT suitable for foot operation!
* Powered by an external 12vAC plug-in power pack (supplied)
* Housed in a metal case measuring 12.5 x 12.5 x 7.5 cm"

Ensoniq Fizmo

images via this auction
"The Ensoniq Fizmo was Ensoniq's last attempt at creating The perfect synthesizer. The Fizmo is a 48-voice synthesizer which uses 2nd-generation Transwave technology to create very organic sounds unlike any other synth available. Every programming function has its own dedicated knob or button, and there is a limited but useful 4-character LCD display. The Fizmo features an Arpeggiator and 24-bit VLSI effects with 41 algorithms, including a Vocoder and the ability to process incoming audio through the Vocoder and effects.

Transwave synthesis uses wavetables of sound data with layered variations in harmonic structures such that their timbres progress naturally from one end to the other. This allows for sounds to modulate over time, or by velocity, wheel, pressure, or any number of other options. Just like Waldorf MicroWave and PPG WAVE.

There are 2 oscillators available for each of the 4 presets allowing for 8 unique oscillators at the same time, not to mention individual LFO and Noise generators for each Osc. Another wonderful feature is the ability to stack up to four individual presets together into one sound and map them across the keyboard. This synth is very capable of some very complex sounds.

The built-in Arpeggiator has 118 presets which can be easily edited to your liking, and 26 real-time control/editing knobs make mutating your sound a pleasure. All controls may be recorded in real-time to an external sequencer.

So, what product would you like us to design next?

via the Analogue Solutions website
"I have about 3 products coming out in the next 6-12 months. But nothing new past that on the design board, since I have been so busy with the Leipzig keyboard synth.

I have a few ideas of the type of synth/analogue related-product I might do next (though it will never be anything radical, synth analogue stuff as been around for 30 or so years so it's all been covered. All I can do really is re-invent the wheel, so to speak.) I specialise in monosynths, modulars, percussion and analogue sequencers. I will not get involved with DSP, digital circuits (beyond MIDI and logic), patch memories (complex and expensive to implement) or polysynths (expensive) - to give you an idea of our design ethos.

If you want to share your thoughts let me know. But please don't be offended if I don't reply since there's lots to do here! But I will try and share my thoughts back where I can. I will of course ignore any offensive emails! (There's always some opinionated bright spark out there). Maybe I'll list some of the funnier ideas on this site (and keep the best to myself!). Some things I consider when thinking about new products; do I have the technical skill to achieve the design, will it be too complex or expensive to produce, will anyone actually BUY it! Also I have to like the idea. I never design any product that I won't enjoy myself."

AS T's as well.

You can find the Analogue Solutions contact link to leave your suggestions at the top right of the Analogue Solutions website. Feel free to discuss here as well of course.

1961 Electronics World - Transistor Theremin by Bog Moog

via this auction

"1961 Electronics Magazine
Build a Transistorized Theremin
Increasingly hard to find, this nearly half-century-old issue of Electronics World contains a fascinating how-to on building that special effects staple of scores of classic sci-fi flicks, the theremin, by none other than electronic music pioneer Robert Moog. The feature article contains a complete schematic and parts list, as well as chassis layout and photos of the completed unit. There are even tips on how to play the ethereal instrument. You get the entire original 1961 magazine, not a couple photocopied pages like you find elsewhere on Ebay.

Also in this issue is a homebrew stereo balancer using 6FG6 magic eye tubes and a look at beam power tubes in VHF oscillators, plus an article on early computer logic circuits, both vacuum tube and transistor-based."

Roland MC-202 Mod / Circuit Bended

images via this auction
"Roland MC-202 synth Mod/ Circuit Bended Version. I've put the same Super long sweep function on the LFO just like the sh-101 mod. You can easily sweep the LFO over 40 seconds easily. Best for trance music. I've also added 10 jack sockets, so there is many more things you can do : Proper CV Gate Input / VCF Cut Off CV / PW /VCA (volume limit control) / MOD / Portamento CV Switch Input / Accent CV Switch Input / Selector for accent (VCF/VCA) / Ext Aud input for VCF / Ext Aud input for VCA. Well, there is plenty more I can add to the MC-202, but there is really not much space in the MC-202 box, I've almost use every single inch of space in there. I could of use a wooden case just like my TR-606 mod, but I couldn't be bother to spend so much time just to make a wooden box.

Mods on the MC-202:
1./ LFO switch : You can choose from Super Slow Sweep / Normal / Crazy Fast
2./ Proper CV gate Input : The MC-202 does have CV/Gate In's and out's. However, it's a known problem that the CV/Gate Inputs have slight problems, since many data are actually quantised before they reach the Synth section. This is because the CV/Gate In's are routed and pass through the internal sequencer CPU then out back to the synth.
3.) VCF Cutoff cv (input) : When a jack is plugged in, the CV is ADDED to the VCF Cutoff Frequency slider setting.
4./ PW CV : When a jack is plugged in, the CV is ADDED to the PWM Slider setting
5./ VCA (limited Volume Control) : The VCA CV In doesn't produce any dramatic effects, it acts like an extra Volume Control.
6./ MOD : Actual MOD on the MC-202 goes from the LFO Sine output to the MOD Slider. So it is possible to tap a CV IN to the mod...
7./ PORTAMENTO CV SWITCH INPUT ( +5V will turn Portamento OFF. 0V will turn it ON. ) : Note: +5V will turn Portamento OFF. 0V will turn it ON.
8./ ACCENT (VCA) CV SWITCH INPUT ( +5V will turn ACCENT ON. 0V will turn it OFF. ): +5V will turn ACCENT ON. 0V will turn it OFF.
9./ ACCENT (VCF) CV SWITCH INPUT: +5V will turn ACCENT ON. 0V will turn it OFF
10./ Selector for Accent -> VCF/VCA (toggle switch): MIDI AUX GATE Out to switch between going to the VCA ACCENT and the VCF ACCENT. When switched, AUX GATE is going to BOTH Accent VCA and Accent VCF, and this actually activates the Accent VCF.
11./ Ext Audio Input to VCF Source Mixer: all the VCO's and Sub-Osc are mixed at the VCF Source Mixer
12./ Ext Audio Input to VCA"

MFB-KRAFTZWERG

"* semi-modular, fully-analog
* 3 VCOs, 24-dB-lowpass-filter
* 37 patch connectors
* integrated MIDI/CV-interface
* MSRP: 580,- Euro

MFB-KRAFTZWERG is the semi-modular version of MFB’s Synth-II. It trades memory locations and MIDI-control off for 37 patch connectors that allow breaking and modifying the internal routing. Put single KRAFTZWERG components under analog sequencer control or let the whole unit interact with your existing modular-synthesizer-system.

MFB-KRAFTZWERG works as a stand-alone synthesizer without the need to patch any cable. The classic formation of VCO-VCF-VCA is pre-wired internally, complete with essential modulations. Therefore, you can play the KRAFTZWERG just like any other synthesizer using its MIDI-input. In addition, it may integrate into a full analog environment using control voltages – and benefit, unlike MIDI, from infinite continuous parameter resolution.

MFB-KRAFTZWERG offers a complete set for powerful and versatile synthesis: three VCOs with hard-sync, 24-dB-lowpass-filter with resonance, noise generator, ring-modulator, two envelope-generators, two LFOs and VCA. Technically and soundwise KRAFTZWERG is identical to MFB’s euro-rack-modules. However, the MFB-KRAFTZWERG comes in a compact format that is easy to take with you and faster in use. Your ideal analog partner on stage!

MFB products are sold at your musical instruments dealer. If you can´t find any reseller closeby we will also sell the MFB-KRAFTZWERG directly within Germany. The price is 580 Euro (incl. VAT plus 10 Euro shipping, cash on delivery)."

"The latest addition to my studio, and what a fun gadget it is! Sorry the visual quality isn't fabulous, the webcam had a hard time focusing on the 4" screen. There's also a "hum" that comes and goes - I really need a new mixer :-/ There's a bunch of features I didn't have time to mention - there's an 8-track mixer where you can set the levels of each of the parts, their pan position, and their sends to the two effects busses. There's inbuilt chorus/flanger and reverb/delay. You can mute channels, so you can drop parts in/out as needed. And there's probably more features I haven't discovered yet :) I was going to record the inbuilt demo songs, but I'm not sure of the copyright implications of that, so I won't. However, they're every bit as cheesy as you'd expect demo songs to be! The page includes newly added source code for the Buchla 700: "Source code for the Buchla 700, courtesy Lynx Crowe. This code is provided as-is with no guarantees of completeness or correctness; it's a compilation of various bits of relevant code that Lynx found going through his archives. If you want to delve into this, you are "on your own." Development was done with an Alcyon C compiler on an Atari 1040ST, although it should be feasible to find a modern compiler that will handle this code. Knowledgeable people with time on their hands could potentially do all sorts of neat things with this, such as (a) create some sort of hardware/software upgrade to the 700 that would allow users to bypass the trouble-prone and difficult-to-find video chip, (b) add features to and fix bugs in the software, and (c) create a softsynth rendition of the 700. It's also a fantastic chance to look at the design of a synth OS by one of the pioneers in the field. Please give Lynx proper acknowledgement on anything you do this this. If you have any commercial aspirations, i.e. you plan to actually sell anything based on this, you should contact Lynx to talk about some sort of licensing arrangement."
