Studio Electronics MIDI Moog Minimoog Oscillator Board

via this auction

"Studio Electronics oscillator circuit board from their MIDIMini rackmount Minimoog synthesizer. This is 3 cloned Minimoog oscillators on a circuitboard. It's a more stable version of the original Minimoog oscillator board that can plug directly into either a Studio Electronics MIDI Mini or a real vintage Minimoog model D synthesizer. It's the same shape and size of the original Minimoog oscillator board. If you have an original Minimoog but it's got dead oscillators or really unstable oscillators, this board may be a good purchase for you. Alternatively, if you're a DIY type who enjoys building synths, you might want to buy this board so you've got 3 Minimoog style oscillators at your disposal. Obviously there's no power supply or chassis included so if you're without a vintage Minimoog or MIDImini, you'll need to rig something up."

"We've had multiples of most vintage synths but this is the first one of these we've had in. So either they're rare or there just arent many of them here in the US. The color scheme reminds us of the Oberheim OBX. Here's an overview.... It's a 2 oscillator 6 note polyphonic analog synth that uses CEM chips, the same type inside the most sought after vintage analog polysynths, so there's a similar sound, perhaps with a lesser price tag. There's also an organ section with 4 drawbars to determine volumes of each of 4 octaves. The filter sounds really nice - its got quite a warm sound. The LFO can do FM, wah or tremolo. The LFO section also has adjustable slope and delay, which many similar synths didn't have. There's a button that causes the LFO to automatically do 1 octave square wave pitch modulation, which is a really interesting feature. The oscillator glide can be set to single or multi trigger. There's an oscillator pitch envelope as well. Otherwise, it's got your usual polysynth features. One particular strange feature is the ability for the voices to alternate between square and sawtooth waveforms. I can understand both at the same time, but alternating? Can someone please explain to me why anyone would want this? :)"

Innova Recordings Releases Schrader's Monkey King CD

Be sure to see the notes from Barry on the synths used further below.

"Barry Schrader’s Monkey King CD has been released by Innova Recordings on Innova 703. The CD contains music inspired by the five elements of ancient Chinese tradition in Wu Xing – Cycle of Destruction, and by stories from the great Chinese classic Journey to the West.

Wu Xing - Cycle of Destruction deals with the Chinese concept of Wu Xing, the five elements in ancient Chinese tradition: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. These are important in Chinese astrology, medicine, and BaGua, a system of trigrams used in Fengshui and other areas of Chinese life and culture. The five elements are often arranged in one of two cycles: the cycle of birth, ending with earth, or, as in this work, the cycle of destruction: metal, wood, earth, water, fire. Wu Xing - Cycle of Destruction explores these elements in transcendent ways. The Metal and Wood sections are aural depictions of the elemental density of the mediums, while Earth considers the metaphysics of planetary rotation and revolution. Water reflects on the conceptual aspects of the world's oceans at various depths, voyaging from the darkest abyss to the light of distant shores. Finally, in Fire, there are the physical and spiritual effects of all-engulfing flames.

Monkey King is based on scenes from the classic Chinese book Journey to the West, written around 1550 by Wu Cheng-en. Considered one of the great classics of Chinese literature, the book chronicles the adventures of the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, one of the most fascinating fictional characters ever created. Barry Schrader has taken some of the most famous scenes from this book and created Monkey King, a new electronic music journey into the imagined past of Chinese legend. In the tradition of Schrader's Lost Atlantis, Monkey King explores an immense imaginary aural landscape.

Tobias Fischer of Tokafi writes:

"Monkey King is a colorful combination of Schrader's recognizably arousing orchestral maneuvers with an immediate melodic appeal, gentle harmonic textures, and electronic echoes of traditional Chinese instruments. While individual elements sound strangely familiar, the resulting entity is without direct reference, a style which is as timeless as it is futuristic and which revels an ancient mythology with the tools of today. Without a single doubt, this piece is the most accessible in Schrader's oeuvre."

Some of the scenes depicted in Schrader's Monkey King are the birth of Monkey, his underwater journey to visit the palace of the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea where Monkey takes possession of the Staff of the Milky Way, Monkey's attempt to jump over Buddha's palm, and Monkey's apotheosis in becoming the Buddha Victorious in Strife.

Barry Schrader has been acclaimed by the Los Angeles Times as "a composer born to the electronic medium," named "a seminal composer of electro-acoustic music" by Journal SEAMUS, and described by Gramophone as a composer of "approachable electronic music with a distinctive individual voice to reward the adventurous." "There's a great sweep to Schrader's work that puts it more in line with ambitious large-scale electronic works by the likes of Stockhausen (Hymnen), Eloy (Shanti) and Henry (take your pick), a line that can be traced backwards to Mahler, Bruckner and Beethoven." writes Dan Warburton of the Paris Transatlantic Magazine. Computer Music Journal states that Schrader’s "music withstands the test of time and stands uniquely in the American electronic music genre." Schrader's compositions for electronics, dance, film, video, mixed media, live/electro-acoustic music combinations, and real-time computer performance have been presented throughout the world. He has been a member of the Composition Faculty of the California Institute of the Arts School of Music since 1971, and has also taught at the University of California at Santa Barbara and the California State University at Los Angeles. His music is recorded on the Innova label. His web site is barryschrader.com."

I asked Barry what he used on the CD:
"As to what I used to compose 'Monkey King' and 'Wu Xing - Cycle of Destruction,' the only hardware I used (other than my Mac) was a Yamaha TX816. Here's a list of the software: Digital Performer, Unisyn, Peak, Rocket Science, and Cycling 74 Pluggo. The last two, of course, are bundles, and have multiple plugins, too many to name. DP also has a lot of plugins.

"As for synthesis techniques, I used additive synthesis, subtractive synthesis (including granular), amplitude modulation, frequency modulation, and transfer functions, which, of course, involve the use of wavetable synthesis. So everything, including all of the sound sources, is digital. I know most of the people who visit your site love analog. I composed with analog equipment for many years, and I still enjoy hearing music created on analog systems. But I'm so used to working with computers now, that I don't think I could go back to analog, and I also don't think I could get the degree of control I need to compose the way I want.

"I work mainly in event lists so that I can specify data. All of the timbres for 'Monkey King' and 'Wu Xing - Cycle of Destruction' were designed specifically for these works. This is a general practice of mine and relates to my compositional point of view. (There's some information on this on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Schrader.) As a result of these practices, I compose very slowly, and I average about 20 hours of work for 1 minute of music. There were times with 'Monkey King,' particularly Part 2, where the work was so strenuous that I had to quit composing for several weeks in order to maintain my equilibrium. The composition of that movement alone stretched out over 6 months.

"I think these may be the last works that I compose with the TX816. I've bought Native Instruments Complete 5 package and have been porting my timbral designs into FM8, which allows for more possibilities than the Yamaha 6-operator design. I'm also learning other programs in the NI package, mainly those that allow me to create electronic material directly. I remain rather uninterested in dealing with concrete (acoustic) sound files. Everything on the 'Monkey King' CD, by the way, as is true of almost all of my music, is electronic. The only computer concrete piece that I did was 'Beyond,' and that was done on the old WaveFrame workstation at UCSB. I'm also going to get additional software for my next big work, which I'll probably begin in January, as I have a sabbatical from CalArts next year. I have a need to keep pushing myself to create new things in new ways. It may be difficult to top some aspects of the music on the 'Monkey King' CD, which, I think is some of my best, but I'm not going to worry about it. For me, each new work is its own universe."

Buchla 100 analog modular music synthesizer

via this auction

"very rare Buchla 100 analog music synthesizer from the 1970 time frame. The analog sound is very rich and organic as a result of Don Buchla's innovative electronic circuit design that is largely based on discrete transistor circuitry. This raw organic sound quality when combined with the unusual control techniques is fundamental to the so called San Francisco West coast sound... This cabinet was part of a larger Buchla 100 system... Control voltages sources include a touch controlled voltage source, a 16 stage 3 output sequencer, a dual attack generator, envelope follower and timing source. External audio processing includes a dual microphone preamplifer, dual spring reverb and a very rare frequency shifter. Internal sound sources include sin, saw and squarewave oscillators and a white noise generator. The system includes several filters including the very rare and desirable 191 sharp cutoff filter.

Top row - 170 dual microphone preamplifier, 130 envelope detector, 185 frequency shifter, 190 dual reverb, 175 equalizer
Second row - 158 dual sine-sawtooth generator, 160 white noise generator, 106 six channel mixer, 191 sharp cutoff filter
Third row - 180 dual attack generator, 110 dual voltage controlled gate, 106 six channel mixer, 194 bandpass filter, 144 square wave generator
Fourth row - 140 timing pulse generator, 146 sequential voltage source
Fifth row - 112 touch controlled voltage source"

Studio Electronics ObieRack - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction
"Absolutely wonderful! I'm not sure there is anything on this magnificent machine to give any clue it isn't brand-new, but because it must be 15 years old or more (and the actual SEMs much older) I'll only call it near-mint. Fantastic implementation of MIDI control of two classic SEMs, very rare in any form, and (we think!) even rarer in this beautiful black-faceplate form. One owner from new (Ed Starink) and just completely beautiful in its cosmetic condition and incredible working order and sound. One of THE great synths, and we think Studio Electronics' best adaptation ever! We will pack this very very carefully, as befits something of this quality. Will come with copies of all the user documentation possible."

Studio Electronics-SE1 - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction

"From Ed Starink's private studio, bought from new, and now at VEMIA for good packing and shipping. Superb condition, both in working and cosmetic order. Apart from a couple of scratches on the top, not visible once the synth is racked, and a little marking on the top left of the left rack ear (possibly white paint, and totally superficial) this is like new. Sounds fantastic, too. With original instruction manual by Greg St. Regis."

Roland-OP8 CV interface for JP-8 - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction

"From Ed Starink's private studio, bought from new, and now at VEMIA for good packing and shipping. I suddenly see how useful this thing is, if you have a JP-8! It connects to a JP-8 either with the flat ribbon cable included in this lot, or to later machines with a 14-pin D-sub connector. It also comes with a professionally-made mini-snake of eight colour-coded mini-jack leads, and the rare original manual and OC-8 installation instructions (typewritten)."

L. L. Electronics Rozzbox Mk I - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction

"Rare and interesting little handmade synth, now discontinued. In virtually mint condition, scarcely used in its three or four years, and certainly never gigged or roughly handled."

Persephone Deluxe Ribbon Controller - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction
"As new, scarcely used at all (used just once for a project) - a hand-made controller, made in France. Ribbon controller with midi/cv and nice internal synth. A whole lot easier than playing the Theremin, French Connection or Ondes Martenot, but producing equally interesting playing modes. This particular model seems to be the deluxe version, with 'crocodile-skin' covering to its suit-case style casing. Really rare, unusual, and out of the ordinary. The serial number implies it is the eight ever made. Here's the blurb from the Eowave website (where it is still available at 1090 euros plus VAT: about 1025 GBP):- 'At the first sight, the Persephone reminds of the first electronic fingerboard instruments developed in the 1920s. But beyond this vintage look, the Persephone allies sensors technology and digital controls to a pure analogue generation of sound. The Persephone musicality will be determined by the way it is played. The Persephone respects the traditional play of the first non-keyboard electronic instruments with the right hand controlling the pitch and the left hand controlling the velocity. The ribbon zone can allow all kinds of play. When scaled, the Persephone can be played like a regular keyboard. Though there are no fixed preset notes with the ribbon, keyboard players will easily find their way. Guitars and bass players will certainly play it like a chord instrument and get sounds that are closed to cello or violin, especially when using vibratos. Jazz players will enjoy slapping the Persephone’s ribbon to get wonderful sonorities. Movie music writers and fans of sci-fi effects will enjoy its bi-dimensional structure, which allows creating eerie sounds very easily. A new fingerboard synthesizer Just like any synthesizer, the Persephone offers a classical synthesis architecture with an oscillator section, a filter section, a modulation section and a LFO section. With its 100% analogue oscillator, the Persephone can generate notes with a range of 10 octaves. Its lower frequencies go from a deep and resonant cello tone to a nearly human voice. On the highest pitches, it can reach very high frequencies. The oscillator waveform can be set between triangle and sawtooth for a more or less brilliant sound. The filter is a 12dB low-pass filter. Its ribbon control surface is pressure and position sensitive. While it requires the most advanced sensor technology and allows all kind of glissando a Theremin or les Ondes Martenot would allow. A scaling potentiometer allows scaling the Persephone’s ribbon from 1, 2, 5 to 10 octaves. The expression key, controlled by an optic sensor, can transmit the slightest vibrations on the key with an accuracy the mechanical systems never had. All the controls are digital. The four play modes - A, B, C and D - offer different hierarchy of control between the pitch, the velocity, a filter modulation and a LFO. Connections are located on the rear side of the front panel and are protected from dust and other source of deterioration by the Persephone suitcase top when not used. The Persephone like a CV/MIDI controller The Persephone has a CV out and a MIDI in/out. With its CV out, it can control any other analogue synthesizers and modular systems. With its MIDI in/out, it can also be used as a MIDI controller, what turns it into a powerful new kind of instrument.'"

Sherman-Quad Modular Filterbank - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction

"One of only 95 (and actually serial number 03, so presumably the third ever made), the mammoth four-MIDI-Filterbanks-in-one machine from Sherman. In excellent condition, with the front panel looking unused, and just a couple of slight marks on the back and side. With copy manual for the Filterbank 2, on which it's based; with extra info from Sherman about the new features on the QMF. http://www.sherman.be/qmf.htm Uses standard IEC mains lead (not supplied)."

350 Computer - Sequencer - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction
"Rare and interesting early sequencer from PPG. Has some quirks, but works fine and has some excellent features. Here's Lucid Sound's informal report after servicing it:- 'There were a few 'anomolies' with this, and very little info available on the web, but I've got it to a good useable state. It really is quite an innovative device. There are some great features here, like the ability to invert the notes in a sequence just by pressing a button, or 'immediate playback' where the sequence repeats what you've just played as soon as you lift fingers off keyboard (takes some explaining but it's good, trust me). Two transpose modes, immediate (waits until the end of the current note) or delayed (waits until the end of the loop) - brilliant. There is a sync in/out, which is a high frequency audio clock, so you can sync to tape, or as I did, use a VCO to control the speed of the sequence (great with an EMS). It's 1V/Octave out, positive trigger. A few strange things though: The 'manual' (translated and brief) says pressing middle C starts a sequence or any other key to transpose - not on this one, bottom C is no transpose, all other keys transposing up. There is a Gate output. This works from the keyboard but not from the recorded sequence even though the trigger output does - however even the guy who wrote the simplified manual that's avaailable online says, and I quote: 'there is no word HOW and what these trigger modes are (sorry!)' It'll also do real time recording, and there's a whole load of editing stuff (timing and pitch changes etc). In really nice cosmetic condition too."

PPG 1002 analogue monosynth - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction

"Superb early rare interesting analogue monosynth in excellent condition. I can't imagine there is a much better example of this synth in the world. The CV in is a strange non-linear design, but tuning on its own keyboard is perfect. Thoroughly tested by Lucid Sound, some screws replaced, the whole instrument serviced and calibrated where necessary. It is in excellent cosmetic condition, with the panel almost faultless, and all knobs in original condition. One of the neat (EMS-like) 'magic eye' buttons has lost its iris, so that the orange bit doesn't disappear when it is switched off. The solid wood endcheeks show signs of its age, but look fine, and somehow right. The keyboard is level and in first-class condition. There is a bit of paint scraping on the back panel, visible in the photo, and the protective rubber shielding round the mains lead is slightly broken, and has been strengthened with gaffa tape. The mains lead itself is perfect and completely safe. Beautiful."

Synton-Three bow-tie / handkerchief sets - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction

"Great fun - three mint unused unopened Synton promo bow-tie and handkerchief sets, in blue, red, and silver. Really nice moiree-type patterned material; a great piece of memorabilia. Very much from an era when men like Bob Moog and Felix Visser wore suits and had long conversations at trade shows. Sold in celebration of Synton, now that Felix is selling up his own gear."

Ppg-390 drum unit (rare prototype, n/p) - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction
"NB: THIS MACHINE IS A PROTOTYPE AND HAS NO PROPER CASING. IT IS ELECTRICALLY UNSAFE WITHOUT PROPER SHIELDING. ONLY BID IF YOU ARE A TECHNICIAN OR WILL HAVE IT MADE SAFE BY A TECHNICIAN BEFORE USE. Incredibly rare early PPG drum unit. Search for this on the internet and you will probably find evidence of only one machine - this one! Check the photo to see exactly the same knob pieces missing. The front panel (apart from the little bits missing on one knob and the four knobs missing on the right) is in excellent condition, and doesn't look anywhere near the 25 or so years old it must be. It uses EPROMS for sound storage - one seems to be missing. The amazing thing is that despite its ramshackle internal appearance (the largest veroboard circuitboard is also wobbly, because there is nothing to support the top) it partially works. Four of the sounds trigger and are well usable in all their 8-bit retro glory, and in theory it should be possible to get everything back to working order without too much difficulty. 240V, standard UK mains plug. BUT ONCE AGAIN, PLEASE NOTE THIS MUST BE MADE SAFE BY A COMPETENT ELECTRONICS ENGINEER BEFORE USE."

Big Briar Model 331 Touch Plate - VEMIA

via this VEMIA auction

"The third of the touchplates that came from Bob Moog's friend and European accomplice Felix Visser, this was the Big Briar production model, although it still looks totally hand-made. This time, there are four controls, but all control voltages as well as any power are routed through the seven-pin DIN plug. Serial number 1024. Untested at present."

"Today's project was a broken 259. The modulation oscillator was not putting out anything in the sawtooth position of the switch. The Harmonics Order control was doing nothing, but voltage was effecting it. Judging simply from the outside of this module, I can assume it was not built at the Buchla factory, but was a kit purchased at the garage sale a few years ago.
