Darkness - Roland SH-201 and Novation Drumstation Track

via X. Pander:
http://home.comcast.net/~xpander/music/Darkness.mp3
"I did some work with the SH-201, mainly to test my multi-tracking equipment and how I get along with the process. Very simple and fairly short but all SH-201 but the drums, which is a drumstation triggered by a Korg ER-1. No additional effects added, all played in by hand. Not the typical supersaw trance demo though."

iHolophone Free: Happy Birthday edition

YouTube via AmidioInc — April 14, 2010 — "http://amidio.com/iholophone
The free version of iHolophone by Amidio is an amazing way to play the infamous "Hapy Birthday" tune. Learn to play it in a minute and you'll always have an excellent gift even when you actually forgot to get the gift.

The correct sequence is (L=left HoloDisc, R=right HoloDisc, number is the number of lights on a HoloDisc sector)

L1 L1 L2 L1 L4 L3
L1 L1 L2 L1 R1 L4
L1 L1 R4 R2 R1 L4 L3 L2
R3 R3 R2 L4 R1 L4

When you master the basics, you can get to the more advanced features like:

1) Rotate device a little towards or backwards for note bends. The speed of the turn will make effect on the note bend speed
2) Change instrument by light shaking your device or tapping the note bend indicators.
3) Start/stop/queue the sequencer patterns by tapping the buttons outside the left HoloDisc.

Get the full version of iHolophone if you like this little but handy app!"

Warren Burt - Early Electronic Music

WARREN BURT
"USCD had several electronic music studios. The two that were available to me, when I arrived in 1971, were the large Buchla 100 studio, and a smaller studio with a small Moog series III which was integrated into a tape music studio. I worked in both of these, but coming from working with the large CEMS system, I was most immediately attracted to the Buchla studio. The UCSD Buchla was about half the size of the CEMS Moog, but it had a lot of unique features. It had four sequencers and 3 Buchla touch sensitive keyboard pad modules. This allowed lots of possibilities. Here's a picture of the UCSD Buchla. It had four cabinets, with a sequencer unit in the bottom of each cabinet. Two of the sequencers were 16 stage units, the other two had 8 stages." See the WARREN BURT website for more.

Piantar demo Feb 1994 - Mark Daum - Blast from the Past

YouTube via markdaum — May 19, 2008 — "I'll be posting some new music in a few months, when I'm finished recording this jazz album I'm currently working on...but until that time I'm going to post some older videos under the series title 'Blast from the Past'.
Here's the first one.
Hope it does something for you.
Mark Daum

** a quick note: The 'Piantar' is strictly speaking a controller instrument, so as such the overall sound will always reflect what it's hooked up to. This video demonstrates some of the playing technique with what I call the 'basic Piantar sound', which is akin to playing an acoustic guitar or piano.

This is the best demo of the piantar that was captured on film from that early time period.
I had invented it a couple years earlier in 1992, but it was just an idea until late 1993. The prototype I'm playing here was designed by myself and constructed by my brother Mike and I,
and the footage is from a cable show where I also met Shawn Brush for the first time.
The music itself is an improvisation based around a song taken from my first album 'Piantarist', (which is no longer in print). I think it's called 'By your Side'.
The performance is a bit primitive and rough around the edges compared to what I had envisioned, but I had just started playing it a few months prior to this taping.
I did manage to improve my playing significantly not long after this, but it was short lived as I dislocated both my shoulders within 8 months.
Flew too close I guess.
As you can imagine it took me a while to recover from this, and it took me the better part of a decade and lots of starts and stops, to figure out how to approach it so that I didn't aggravate what turned out to be a somewhat chronic condition.
So if you ever saw me perform around this time, and then wondered later, whatever happened to that guy... well now you know.
I'm glad to say however that despite this fairly major set back, these years were very fruitful for me musically...just in different ways.

Now I'm poised to start exploring the potential of this instrument with much better sonic tools at my disposal than I had ever had before...it should be a lot of fun.
Stay tuned."

Macbeth Dual Oscillator

via this auction
"Macbeth Dual Oscillator for Eurorack Modular synthesizers. For those of you who don't know you need a standard eurorack case to power this unit, doepfer etc. Unit works great it's not very old and in perfect condition. I personally think this is the best sounding euro oscillator module on the market, it has a real classic vintage sound and honestly sounds fatter than a lot of vintage analog oscillators. Completely worth the money, some people gripe about macbeth prices but they are missing out!!! Simply the best and I've owned two macbeth M5s and can tell you the dual oscillator module sounds better, more gooey and warm and breathes with more life than the m5 oscs. I'm thinking this is actually the first used Macbeth Dual Osc to hit ebay??? I'm only selling to fund another big synth purchase and I'm selling off my euro stuff because I don't like patching all that much with little tiny 1/8th cords haha. These are $1299 new and here in CA there is crazy tax so don't miss out on the buy now... always lots of watchers on the modular stuff so act fast and treat yourself to the best analog oscillators around. I must just say that the ring mod on this thing is to die for, it's so freakin warm and good sounding and I've tried a lot of ring mods..."

Custom floor model MMM commissioned by bass player Jason Stiles

via George Mattson:

"I just completed this unit. The customer has been coming over twice a week since last November to learn about synthesizers and build his own system.

The case is his design.

The system incorporates two voice chains and a variety of CV modules. We built a prototype HandyCon CV controller and developed an interface for seven M-Audio expression pedals. The pedals are in one half of the case and fold up onto the system to make a nice carrying case.

He uses a Roland Bass pickup on his 5-string Warwick bass to drive a Roland GR-20 guitar synthesizer. The MIDI output of the GR-20 drives the MIDI/CV controller on the MMM. While playing he can output the straight bass audio, bass audio processed through his effects pedal board, the GR-20 synth sounds and the MMM patches. The M-Audio pedals can pretty much be patched up to control any of his synth CV or audio parameters. The system also contains an Amplitude Follower module that can be used to further control patch parameters.

I’m really excited to see (hear) what he creates."

Marsona 1200A Noise Generator

via this auction

"Vintage Marsona 1200A.
This unit was made as a sleep-inducer. It is actually an analog white noise generator.
Selector Knob - Off/4 Noise Modes: Surf I, Surf II, Rain, Waterfall.
Surf Rate Knob - Slow>Fast
Surf Range Knob - Low>High
Tone Knob - Bass>Treble
Volume Knob - Min>Max
Surf I and Surf II are modulated white/pink noise.
Pulsating from a trebley white noise to a moremuted pink noise.
Rain is more like plain White Noise.
Waterfall is more like plain Pink Noise.
I'm not sure if it induces sleep, but it makes a good and highly usable noise signal.
It's also circuit-bendable or makes a good enclosure for synth projects."

Cromina String Machine

Cromina String Machine
"No samples inside! After more than one year of development we are glad to present you this physical modeling recreation of the electronic strings sound of the 60s and 70s. Solina, Crumar and Logan where the names, which made it first possible for bands to bring a string orchestra on stage or into the studio. The lush sound of these electronic keyboards stamped many songs of this era. And then an electronic musician from France connected one of those keyboards to a phaser and created the most famous electronic string sound ever.

Two things are fundamental for this famous sound, which also made it impossible to construct a faithful copy with samples:

- the frequency divider circuit, that gave these keyboards polyphony
with the disadvantage of a very static sound
- the chorus unit to overcome this with a heavy modulation

The soundwise peculiarities of these can not be successful recreated by sampling. So we developed a plugin with the main emphasis on the reproduction of this typical influence on the sound. Though the drawback is a higher CPU load, it absolutely gives a much better reproduction of the original sound.

Although this plugin has it’s focus on the typical Solina sound (including a phaser and delay effect), it can produce a wide range of typical sounds by using the integrated equalizer, vibrato, envelope variations (including a piano envelope) and other tuning controls."
