Hexaphone - Motion Filter

YouTube via hexaphonejam | September 22, 2010

"Hexaphone's Motion Filter is like a wah-wah pedal that uses your accelerometer to filter the sound of the keyboard.

The filter is a 24db Resonant Lowpass filter - you can adjust the filter's resonance ("Q") with the SETUP - FILTER REZ slider - this makes the sound 'wetter'."

1986 Music & Electronics Magazine Cassette

via Pea Hicks of http://optigan.com/
"i stumbled across this old cassette i picked up somewhere, thought you might like to post it on the blog. it goes along with the first issue of a very obscure music tech rag from the mid-80s called "Music & Electronics" magazine. it was published by the same folks that brought you "99'er" and "Home Computer" magazines. It may not have survived past its first issue, as I've never actually seen a copy and a google search brings up nothing.

anyway, i only have the tape, which features musical examples to go along with the magazine articles. synths include Casio CZ-101, Yamaha DX7, Roland TR-707, etc. note that the first couple minutes of side b were recorded over by the previous owner, so i just faded in after the missing bit.

would be great to hear if anyone out there has a copy of the magazine itself!"

Update: Note the reference to "Techno Bach" at 32:15. According to wikipedia, "The first recorded use of the word techno, in reference to a genre of music, was in 1988." Yes, this is not Techno techno, but interesting. I wonder when the term "Techno" was first used in reference to any music.

If anyone out there has more info feel free to comment or send me an email and I'll updated the post.

Update:

via pea in the comments:
"YMO, "Technopolis," 1979
Kraftwerk, "Techno-Pop," 1986
the terms "techno-pop" and "techno-rock" were definitely in use before Kraftwerk's usage, though."

via electric454 in the comments:
"the b side of the Buggles single Clean, Clean from 1980 was a song called Technopop"

via Jim W on AH:
"In 1978 I co-founded Tekno Tunes indie label, Tekno Town Studio (Northampton, MA), and Tekno Tours booking. We booked acts as diverse as Buddy Rich, DNA, The Slits, Pere Ubu, & WKGB among others. The music I wrote & played from 77 - 83 as The Scientific Americans was described as " techno punk" by several major publications.

So far I haven't found an earlier instance, so for now I claim naming rights for techno as a musical genre. Actually, my music partner, Craig O'Donnell (author of Cool MAC Sounds) came up with it. We used it constantly for 5 years."

via C.R. in the comments: "The song "Techno City" is from 1984.

I think that's the first use of "techno" in the sense of techno music."

Maximize Your Moogfest Experience

"GET THE MAXIMUM MOOG AT MOOGFEST 2010 HALLOWEEN WEEKEND – 10/29-10/31 IN ASHEVILLE, NC

Going to Moogfest 2010? Be sure to get the most out of your festival experience. You’ll enjoy the music even more if you take advantage of these unique opportunities to immerse yourself in the world of Moog:

PROJEK MOOG
Saturday, 6:00pm – 6:50pm at The Orange Peel

A stellar lineup of some of today’s most proficient multi-instrumentalists (including Moog Chief Engineer, Cyril Lance), Projek Moog has composed a specific piece of music for Moogfest, one that highlights the various instruments for which Moog Music is renowned. Joining the group will be Brian Kehew, a close friend of Bob Moog’s and best known for his work in the Moog Cookbook as well as being the historian for the Moog Foundation. If you want to see the many facets of Moog Music at work, this has to be on your must-see list.

The inspiration in creating this show was to feature new instruments and the artists whose valuable input helped perfect them. Both Brian Kehew and fellow Projek Moog musician Billy Cardine have been involved in helping create instruments that are truly inspirational. Brian has been associated with Moog for years and Billy recently helped with a brand new stringed instrument which will make its debut at Moogfest.

Having these great musicians involved in product development is emblematic of what Bob was all about and the legacy of Moog Music. Instruments are collaborative - they need to be intuitive and soulful. Brian and Billy's involvement have kept this spirit alive and Projek Moog is about celebrating that legacy.

Happy Halloween 2010 via organfairy

Remember to click on the Halloween label at the bottom of this post for more Halloween goodness!
"I thought about what to do this year for a Halloween video. I found a pile of electric candles (!) that I bought a while ago but never used.

Then I remembered a melody I made in 2003. The idea was to use a rhythm on my then favourit drum machine - the Roland CR-1000 - that I had never used before: Charleston. And a weird preset on the Roland JX-8P that I had never used either. I modified it a bit to make it more "alien-like" and added the accordeon preset to the arrangement and a piano arpeggio from the Yamaha organ.

I played the melody on the Kawai MS-20 and Yamaha VSS-30. Added some organ chords from the Viscount organ. And that was it."

PPG Wave 3.V Beta Testing Begins

via Waldorf:

"The new Waldorf PPG Wave 3.V is now in beta test stage.

Waldorf PPG Wave 3
Busy testers will put the plug-in through its paces. We are very proud that one of our testers is mastermind Wolfgang Palm himself who invented the PPG Synthesizers in the 1970s.

Here are some secret facts: Besides the well-known features of the PPG Wave 2.V our new plug-in offers sample playback based on the classic PPG Waveterm technology. We have added some nice stuff like an opulent effects section, filter drive as well as an extensive sound browser.

Not enough? Well, what would you say if we added the complete Waveterm B sample library and more than 130 wavetables (a lot of new stuff created by Wolfgang Palm)."

Also, the Waldorf Edition software package currently featuring the PPG Wave 2.V, Waldorf Attack drum synth, and D-Pole filter is available for purchase online. Note it is also available at Novamusik here.

"Three masterpieces in one edition:

* Waldorf Attack is a very powerful and versatile drum synthesizer, beloved due to it's rich palette of sounds an intuitive user interface.
* PPG Wave 2.V is the authentic reproduction of the legendary PPG Wave 2.3. that dominated many productions of the 80s.
* D-Pole is the prestigious Waldorf Filter with resonance up to self-oscillaton and beyond.

Everything runs properly on Mac and PC, also on Intel based Mac and as AudioUnit.
This offer is a download item. The boxed version can be purchased from your local dealer.

SuONOIO Modular Synth Unboxing

Some unboxing pics of my SuONOIO. Be sure to click each for the super sized shot. I can't wait to dig into it. This isn't a simple noise maker. It's much, much more. For those new to the SuONOIO, it's a joint venture between Alessandro Cortini of SONOIO and previously NIN, and Scott Jaeger of the Harvestman, who's digital eurorack modules are renowned in the modular synth community as being the best of the best.

If you look at the label under each knob, from left to right, you will see FREQ-A, MIX, FREQ-B, SAMPLE-A, SAMPLE-B, MOD AMT and MOD FREQ (see below for more pics). Essentially you have two sample sets from Alessandro Cortini's SONOIO album to manipulate, but, don't think of this as a sample/loop player. This is much more powerful. This is a textural drone synth with modulation capabilities that make it surprisingly flexible and sound very, very good. Side note: the built in speakers do NOT do it justice. Fortunaltly a 1/4" out is built into the unit. Head phones don't do it justice. Plug it into your studio system and you are treated to an incredibly unique and powerful sounding synth.

The SAMPLE-A knob lets you select the SAMPLE for what is effectively oscillator A, and SAMPLE-B for oscillator B. You can adjust the frequency of each with the corresponding FREQ knobs, and you can adjust the MIX between the two with the MIX knob. There is a volume knob and an on/off toggle switch.

Where the magic really comes in is with these little cables and the red jumper caps provided just under and to the side of each FREQ knob. If you look at the knobs again, you will see little empty jumper connections next to each. Each individual jumper corresponds to a different effect. Connect the jumper and the effect is enabled. Some, like distortion, are active immediately, others come in with the MOD AMT knob. You can use the cables to route the RND effect described below, or use them as a more flexible way to "pop/touch" effects in and out for real time performance. You can even patch between multiple SuONOIOs (see RND below).

The Sample Effects are as follows x 2 (one for each sample/osc):
DISTORTION 01 - a loud, powerful distortion effect.
DISTORTION 02 - a more subtle "bitcrushing" distortion.
CROSS-MOD - The audio output of the other channel controls the pitch. Use the MOD-AMT knob to adjust depth.
BACKWARDS - Reverses the playback of the channel.
LFO -> FREQ
LFO -> WINDOW - Your gateway to endless, bizarre rhythm effects.
LFO -> AMPLITUDE
LFO INVERT
RND - These two pins generate random on/off signals. The rate of change can be controlled with the MOD-FREQ knob. To use them, use one of the mini-cables to connect a RND pin to your desired jumper location, on the TOP row of pins per jumper.

Additional individual effects :
DELAY A - Enables Delay effect for channel A. MOD-AMT controls delay send/feedback, and MOD-FREQ controls the wet/dry mix.
CRYSTAL - Gives the delay feedback an octave-up effect.
SHORT 01 - Shortens the delay time.
SHORT 02 - Shortens the delay time by a different amount. Use both SHORT jumpers with high feedback for a flanger effect.
DELAY B - Enables Delay effect for Channel B.
FREEZE - Freezes the value of the MOD-AMT and MOD-FREQ controls only for the delay effect (so you can change the LFO settings while keeping the same delay sound).
SWAP - The knob position of the MOD-AMT and MOD-FREQ controls (as applied to the delay) is mirror-imaged: a 0% setting becomes 100%, and so on.
RESERVED - This jumper doesn't do anything right now, but will do exciting things in the future.

In response to some comments on Muff's:
"Glad you like the layouts. Sorry to have neglected the A series for so long. It wasn't because I wanted to just was so jammed up with B series orders for so long. I have attached the proposed B series Vocoder layout.

Vocoder is 10 band 4 pole filter design coded for DSP by the mighty Eric Brombaugh. The spacing on the Control module is because I want to use the B series board which is a single U width spacing. I haven't heard any complaints so far from users and means it could probably be operated one handed as well. I admit it doesn't look as nice as it would spaced out a bit more.

Bruce"

Note the full product description for the B Series VCO with samples is up here.

"The Triple VCO 70B takes the modular oscillator to a new level.
Three VCOs in a single module provides a tonally rich and versatile sound source featuring band-limited wave generation ideal for subtractive synthesis.

The Triple VCO provides 3 Oscillators controlled by a common CV or 1/V per octave pitch control. Mixer functions are handled internally, controlled by a single pot or CV. The range for the primary oscillator is 10 octaves with an offset range of +2 Octaves for OSC2 and OSC3 adjustable in both quantized semitones and non-quantized values switch selected."

MOOG SYNTHEZIZER #35 '76 walnut slant synth

via this auction

"Moog #35 analog synthesizer circa 1976. To my knowledge, there has never been another like this on Ebay. The #35 is probably more rare than the #55 as there are no pictures of it anywhere on the web. A #55 was currently for sale for $35,000. Lights alone are so cool that coming into a room and seeing it is enough to make your heart skip.

Auction includes a Moog 951 keyboard controller complete with original military surplus type connections as well as a #55 sales brochure. Behind the rear panel it reads Model 350-000 S#9042, Oct. 26 1976. Outer walnut casing is in great shape with only minor scratches and dings. It would probably look even better with a little oil or furniture polish but I haven’t done anything to the original finish. I have decided that the wood is poplar wood stained walnut. The inside is museum grade wiring; beautiful and untouched by human hands since factory, as far as I can tell. The synthesizer has a power cord but I don’t know if it’s original. One key is missing but easily fixed at a reputable keyboard shop. Keys are a little sticky as it needs to be played. No patch cables are included in this auction...

Here’s a list of the modules in this synthesizer—all signed by initial on little Moog yellow tags (will not part-out - so don’t ask):

It also has a oscillator control to filter mod. and 911-902 trigger and coupling module."

Logan Mitchell Sr. & Baltimore SDIY Group Featued in the Baltimore News

Ed Baldi wrote in to let me know Logan Mitchell, founder of the Baltimore SDIY Group, is currently featured in the Baltimore City Paper. You can find the full article here.

snip: "In 2005, Mitchell saw bassist Marcus Miller perform. 'And I talked to his keyboardist, [who was] playing a Moog Mini D,' Mitchell says. 'We talked and I told him my background, and that I wanted to get a Mini-Moog, like he had. That inspired me to make my own...'

That led Mitchell to an online group called Analog Haven, a high-volume listserv that is a kind of massive catacomb of worldwide analog nerditry. In 2007, he sent out an e-mail to the group looking for synth heads from the Mid-Atlantic region interested in starting their own thing."

And little related plug for MATRIXSYNTH via Ed: "I connected with him [Logan] a few years ago through one of your posts. He has worked hard to book a synth fest at this relatively 'big' area venue. This is just a another example of the everyday people around the world, in the trenches, dedicated to making electronic music for no other reason than the pure joy and satisfaction on a deeply personal level.

You continue to be an advocate for this type of expression and just wanted to share the article. Thank You Matrix."
