EMS DK0 keyboard - the rarest of EMS!

via Vemia  "People talk glibly of 'museum quality', but if there is one item in this auction that fits that description, it is this. Firstly, it is very early, and extraordinarily rare: Serial number 7001, and we believe Robin Wood at EMS has had his hands on only ONE other example (possibly Eno's?). (On the phone this week he clarified this - there may have originally been 10 or 15 made altogether, he guesses, but he has only seen one.) Secondly, the cosmetic condition is unbelievably good: it honestly looks like it was made in the last few months, not nearly 40 years ago. The black tolex is so perfectly black, and the keys so perfectly white, that it is very difficult to photograph. It is clear that it has hardly ever been used, if ever. It was stored in dry, secure non-smoking storage at Dartington College of Arts, who owned it from new. It has been checked over and calibrated by Lucid Sound, is in perfect working order, and comes with a perfect eight-pin lead."

EMS Sequencer 256

via Vemia
"One of the rarest pieces of equipment from EMS or any other manufacturer: the massive Sequencer 256. Not just a very important part of electronic music history (probably the first commercially available digital sequencer, and unrivalled for a decade or more). It is also a thoroughly viable piece of equipment in today's electronic studio, with some elements which would be very difficult to re-create with a state-of-the-art computer system. This particular machine has been owned throughout its life by Dartington College in Devon, the arts college. Funds from the sale will go to the world-famous summer school. It was loaned out by Dartington in the late 70s for the cult film 'The Shout' - see one of the pics which has a still from the DVD behind this actual machine. It has been thoroughly serviced by EMS experts Lucid Sound, as usual with the kind help of Robin Wood at EMS. Lucid's service notes tell the story of the thoroughness of this work:- Replaced Nestra PSU capacitors 12V supply has ripple, swapped +/12V cards, now OK, possible diode blown in 12V rectifier, checked, reswapped, no fault found. Cleaned Nestra edge connectors, now OK. Tested sequencer, functions basically work but control voltages are unstable. Traced to bad trimmer resistors. Replaced all trimmers on C card, +2.5V reference out of range of adjuster, traced to faulty 741 opamp, replaced. +/2.5V now calibrated correctly. Replaced trimmers on B card, recalibrated internal clock. Slew rate processor calibrated – note slew rate CV in is hardwired to Channel B dynamic out. Set Channel B vernier to 5 if you want to disable this facility. Replaced trimmers on A card, keyboard output voltage still unstable. Traced to noisy resistors in output circuit and FET’s loose in sockets. Soldered FET’s in place, added 10k multiturn trimmer in place of existing 1k pot and 4k7 padding resistors, octaves now stable and calibrated. Adjusted so that middle ‘F’ is reference note at zero volts. Adjusted trimmer so that Zero Store = full scale on meter when indicating free memory. Some keyboard contacts intermittent, cleaned Calibrated verniers so that 5 = zero volts out. Scaling adjustable on verniers to +/1.2V/Octave. Layer 1 key circuit has been previously modified for +/10V output, layers 2 – 4 are standard at +/5V, but can be modified on request. Clock rate vernier sometimes slips, replaced vernier (retained original knob and cap) and calibrated for zero volt on meter and 4Hz clock frequency when vernier set to 5. Cleaned panels, tolex top and keyboard. EMS Keyboard lead included, tested and cleaned pins. Mains lead missing, manufactured new one. Sourced manual. Final test of all functions with Synthi A and SH09. Cosmetically the end cheeks are not good - they have lost quite a lot of veneer on the corners and edges; but the important bits - the control panel, etc - are very good indeed. Packing at VEMIA will be 25GBP; personal delivery may be possible at economic rates in UK and north-western Europe"

ONE THOUSAND PULSES presents KEITH FULLERTON WHITMAN / May 28

"Keith Fullerton Whitman started his path through music at an early age (9) by intentionally ‘versioning’ Commodore Vic20 basic sound programs to yield raw computer-speak skronk. Growing up at record-collector fairs throughout northern New Jersey in the late 80s, Whitman had access to just about every type of underground music imaginable, declaring allegiances early on to European free improvisation, progressive and psychedelic rock, breakdance-themed urban machine music, the post World War II orchestral avant garde, and the early electronic experiments of the WDR and INA-GRM camps.

Whitman is a composer/performer obsessed with electronic music, from its mid-century origins in Europe through its contemporary worldwide incarnation as “digital music.” He has implemented a complete system for performance of improvised electronic music that incorporates elements from nearly every era: a reel-to-reel tape machine, a selection of small “jerry-rigged”/”circuit-bent” battery-powered sound-producing boxes, an analog modular synthesizer [serge], an early “consumer” home-computer, and at the core, a contemporary computer running a custom-built Max-MSP based modular system that both controls these elements and acts as a central conduit into which their sounds are captured/collected, processed, then diffused to up to eight separate channels/speakers/amplifiers. It’s a more than impressive set-up that has already undergone several permutations; Whitman has metamorphosed all the technology now down to several more manage able modules, but he reserves the right to surprise future audiences with who-knows-what unimaginable electronic beasties at his charge.

In addition to his seemingly ever-growing list of daily activities, Whitman runs a mailorder service named Mimaroglu Music Sales which mainly sells reissues of early electronic music. He also runs the Entschuldigen record label and had previously run Reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge. He is not German. He has previously dabbled in “virtuosic dance music” under many stage names/pseudonyms, most notably Hrvatski. Key recordings in his oeuvre include two outings released under his given name on the Kranky label, Multiples and Recorded in Lisbon 10/4/2005, but just two superb examples of his unique, processed dronemuzik.

For his OTP debut, he’ll be previewing exclusive new works for synth, proof that as a full-on modular man, Whitman is an expert at singing the body electric.

Dr. Bob's Collector Pack from Arturia

"ARTURIA and the BOB MOOG FOUNDATION announce the release of Dr. Bob’s Collector Pack

Asheville USA, Grenoble FRANCE– May 10th 2011

ARTURIA and the BOB MOOG FOUNDATION are proud to introduce Dr. Bob's Collector Pack.

This luxurious box set includes Arturia's award-winning Minimoog-V and Moog Modular V, a DVD of

the Moog documentary, an archival book featuring unreleased material curated by Michelle Moog-Koussa entitled From Bob Moog's Private Archives, and an official Bob Moog Foundation button.

Quantities are limited to 1000 copies worldwide. Profits will be donated to the Moog Foundation to benefit their projects and help carry Bob Moog’s legacy forward.

To celebrate this event, Arturia is also organizing a contest to win a 1975 Minimoog synthesizer on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/arturia2.

"We are delighted to partner with the BMF and bring to musicians Dr. Bob, a pack that will be of high value to everyone interested in Bob Moog's legacy. Years ago, Arturia was extremely lucky to work with Bob Moog on the re-creation of some of his most famous synthesizers. Today we are extremely happy to support the BMF and give a little back, while bringing to the market a great collector box."

— Frederic Brun (President of Arturia)

“"The Bob Moog Foundation is proud and delighted to share many items from our archives for the one-of-a-kind From Bob Moog's Private Archives booklet included in Dr. Bob's Collector Pack. The items gracing these pages, many of them rarely seen, illuminate pivotal junctures in the rich history of the Moog legacy. From Bob Moog's Private Archives is the first published collection of images from the vast trove of materials that Bob accumulated over the length of his 50-year career; it serves as the ultimate complement to the materials in the Pack. Our thanks to Arturia for highlighting the sonic, historical and human legacy that Bob Moog left for us all to enjoy."

"This is the original now obsolete module (osc-02 is different) fully working in very good cosmetic condition comes with cable for fitting to a doepfer power case... 3x voltage controlled oscillators in one module ! with seperate or pre mixed outputs and a ring modulation output of osc1 and osc2 !!!!!
all controllable by one cv input (1v/octave) or each voice has its own cv input (chords !)

This info is taken from the original web page now defunct

The OSC-01 Triple DCO provides you with three full-fledged analog oscillators under digital control in just one module. If desired, they can be played via one single control voltage for chords with fixed intervals. If you control the pitch of each DCO separately, for instance by a 3-row analog step sequencer, you can produce chords with changing intervals. The third oscillator features the extraordinary sawtooth waveform known from the first version SyLITE. Additionaly there´s a digital ring modulator.
Technical details

3 DCOs, that is analog oscillators with digitally controlled pitch (like in the Roland Juno 106), thus very stable. Each DCO has a CV-input (CV 1, 2, 3) for pitch, bu those are cascaded, so you can control all three oscillators with just one control voltage at CV input 1. The audio outs of the DCOs can be tapped at separate outputs or a common one. Furthermore puls width modulation, assignalble hard sync (os1 to 3 oder osc1+2 to osc3) and digital ring modulation of DCO 1 and 2 (internally switchable to 1 and 3) with a separate output. Three CV-inputs for frequency modulation (switchable to PWM) with a common attenuator for CV4 and an attenuator for CV6. DCO1 and 2: 16´, 8´, 4´, tune control, Waveforms: sawtooth, square, narrow pulse DCO3: 32´, 16´, 4´, tune control, Waveforms: square, narrow pulse, digital saw
inputs and outputs

cascaded inputs CV 1, 2 and 3 for FM. Inputs CV 4, 5 and 6 for FM or PWM (switchable), sync in, ring modulator output. Ausio out 1, 2 and 3 (cascaded)

Yamaha CS01II plays NEW LIFE by Depeche Mode

YouTube Uploaded by peahix on May 9, 2011

"The Yamaha CS01II is the first real synthesizer I ever owned. I got it when I was about 14 years old, back in 1985 or so. I noticed that I could get reasonable approximations of most of the sounds from Depeche Mode's "Speak & Spell" album with it, but at the time I didn't have the means to make decent multi-track cover versions, even after I got a 4-track.

Recently I was studying the Depeche Mode 5.1 surround mixes, and realized that I could clearly hear all the distinct parts of alot of the songs, including "New Life." I also realized that most of the sounds in "New Life," which heavily featured the ARP 2600, were fairly simple. So I decided to throw together a version of it using just my trusty old Yamaha CS01II as the sole sound source (including the drums), just to see how close I could get to the original.

This version has no vocals at all, but otherwise it comes pretty close to the original. The actual musical arrangement is 100% accurate. The sounds themselves are of course only approximations, and most of them don't have the same level of timbral detail as the ARP originals. I sequenced the whole thing in Cubase via a Kenton Pro Solo going into the custom CV/Gate inputs on my CS01II, recording each monophonic line in one at a time. Cubase provided the reverb and EQ, otherwise it's all CS01II."

This video was recorded with no effects, just the straight signal from Baby. The "Deprive" knob really helps sculpt the sound. There are three audio rate oscillators and one clock rate that controls the "Shake" feature. It was a complicated task to get everything inside the baby head. It is now sealed shut, so if anything goes wrong.......surgery. My next baby will have a CV in, babies like that. I did not realize there are others who use baby heads for projects........cool."

Pencil Fields - analog gestural interface controlling Bugbrand Modular

YouTube Uploaded by otoskope on May 9, 2011

"This is a live performance by Palle Dahlstedt on a custom built instrument, using a simple pencil drawing as a gestural interface for controlling complex analog synthesis (on a Bugbrand Modular). The instrument works by creating a voltage potential field in the graphite/pencil markings on the paper using custom movable electrodes made from coins. Then, various control voltages are extracted from other points on the paper, controlling various aspects of the synthesized sound.

A big thanks to Tom Bugs for very valuable electronics advice!

The sound is recorded directly from the BugBrand Modular (with a slight reverb), and from contact mics on the pencil sharpener. There is no normal microphone, which explains the slightly awkward silence in the beginning, while I'm drawing.

Recorded at the second performance (of two), May 6th, 2011, Gothenburg, Sweden. Concert arranged by Levande Musik (www.levandemusik.org)

This work is part of the research project Creative Performance at University of Gothenburg, funded by the Swedish Research Council."
