An Interview with David Borden - The Early Days of Moog
"In the late '50s he attended the Eastman School of Music, in Rochester (NY) and it was during this time that he discovered the electronic music of Otto Luening, the man who founded the Columbia-Princeton Center for Electronic Music with Vladimir Ussachevsky. This interest in electronic music eventually led David to meet Robert Moog in 1967 and - two years later - to found the first all synthesizer ensemble, Mother Mallard Portable Masterpiece Co. In the early years, Mother Mallard used monophonic modular Moog synthesizers and was the first live act to take the Minimoog on stage - when it was still being developed - in May, 1970. Mother Mallard recorded some great pieces that still sound fresh and modern nowadays!"

Dagda's Magic Harp
Published on Feb 10, 2013 copperleaves·57 videos
"This is one of many stories about the mythological king of ancient Ireland, know as 'Dagda' (pronounced "dada"). Dagda is said to have possessed, among other wonderful things, a magical harp which he could use to produce supernatural phenomena. This story was first written down by Christian monks around the 12th century AD, but at that time it was already ancient and had been handed down verbally for more than a thousand years.
According to legend, there were two tribes living in Ireland at the time of King Dagda: the Fomorians who were small and dark haired people, and the Celtic "Tuatha De Danaan" who were tall, light skinned and blond and whose leader was King Dagda. It seems they were constantly at war and this particular tale has to do with the time the Fomorians stole Dagda's magic harp (something which turned out to be a very bad idea).
The instrument I am using to accompany myself in this song is a two part affair of my own devising which I call the 'tibicen' (the Latin word for "piper"). It is entirely electronic, and consists of a small keyboard which sits in my lap, and a pedalboard (similar to a church organ) on the floor in floor in front of me. Nothing was added to this performance and there are no overdubs or additions of any kind. This is exactly the way it was performed.
The pedalboard provides the drone, while the keyboard plays melody. The instrument has a huge range, can play in any key, and I have tried to show some of what it can do in this video.
In ancient time, when sagas of this sort were performed, they sometimes went on for hours. I had to cut this down to its bare essentials in order to bring it in under eight minutes. The unedited story contains a lot of interesting details but I didn't want to bore everyone by going on too long!"

"This is the highly regarded and quite hard to find Teisco 60f monophonic synthesizer dating back to 1980 and this one is in rare raring-to-go full order. We've checked it over very carefully, left it on 'soak', wasted time moving faders and twiddling knobs trying to get something to go wrong. We failed. Everything works just fine. When fired up it takes about a minute for the pitch to fully stabilise but once it has, the pitch is totally reliable.
For a single oscillator synth it has very full tonal variety thanks to the inclusion of sound bending peripherals such as a highly sophisticated LFO section, a self-oscillating controller, variable vibrato, assignable ADSR section, a couple of deep filters and adaptable pulse wave modulation options.
Another remarkable option is its ability to work with an external audio source: you can route your digital 'virtuals' through very real analogue synth filters and envelopes [envelope trigger from keys or gate or just use ‘hold’ mode for real time fun] - hook it up to an MP3 for amazing remixing and re-filtering on the fly.
The control panel has more than a hint of Roland styling but at the time of manufacture Teisco was wholly owned by the synth division of Kawai. A label makes mention of an APR license but the word is that this only applies to the quirky but functional touch pad pitch controller.
Nope, it doesn't do MIDI [not yet even a twinkle in anyone’s eye when this was launched] but if you are adept with control voltages and gates and have the right interfaces you can use it in conjunction with other gear. Provided, that is, you read up a lot and have a cupboard full of the right converter boxes and leads.
This instrument is in fine shape; cosmetically it has a few very light scratches and tiny knocks to edges of the wooden end cheeks [I've seen year-old synths in much worse condition] and it is hard to believe that this keyboard is due its 33rd birthday cake. Audio wise, it is a real and special treat.
Look at the photographs [noting illuminated green arrows that show the signal flow]"

"Midi Designer is a Midi Controller builder. Before I continue, you should know that Midi Designer doesn't send Midi notes. Only Midi CC. For this reason you will not be able to play notes on a Keyboard or Drum Pad module with this App. Despite this, you will be able to control all the parameters of your synthesizer with the Midi CC. So know let's talk about the special features of Midi Designer... If I'm a keyboard player, I can control a Synth on my Mac or PC with a USB Midi keyboard, and If I've also got a pedalboard connected to my iPad... I will be able to control my synthesizer by adding modules (Knobs, Slider, Crossfader, X / Y Pads, Label, Button & Button Square, and Panel) on Page. Note that a great feature allows you to create a sub-controller very quickly (read the tutorial). These modules will be created on Pages. You will be able to switch easily from one Page to another, to arrange them, to display two pages on screen, to change the aspect... But behind these Pages,... are Pedalboards! You will be able to create your own custom Pedalboard. When done, (it works like the Pages edit), hide it by scrolling the Pages over it! Midi Designer is really steady, it works very well. It's easy to use too... It is a Killer App! Note that it is not the purpose of Midi Designer, but I would really like to have a keyboard module... I forgot to say that you can save 20 presets, save and send them by email, and share them with another Midi Designer user..."

The MAPS is a brilliant sequencer and works very well with the RN, 6 8 step sequence tracks were used, some with different lengths, the sequence wasn't tweaked while recording. All sounds are RN (Apart from Kick drum which was made with my Bugbrand Modular (just an SV filter pinged and CV'd from an envelope) with delayed reverb effect from Eventide Space."

Equipment used: Roland TR-808 (drums and trigger for the Mono-poly), Juno 60, Alpha Juno; Korg Mono/Poly, Polysix; Electro Harmonix Small Stone; Boss DD-3; Lexicon MPX500, MPX110; Allen & Heath GS1; Tascam 38, DX-4D; Alesis iO26 & Izotope Ozone 5 for mastering
Only analog synths used, recorded to tape, and mixed with an analog mixer. No computers or MIDI used during recording and mixing. Only the final stereo track was mastered using Izotope Ozone 5 (AAAD)."

"This auction is for a FULLY SERVICED great sounding Arp 2600 (synthesizer only). And yes, this 2600 features the 4012 Moog-copy filter!
Unit serviced by the one and only dedicated Arp tech of 23 years, Phil Cirocco of C.M.S. / Discrete Sythesizers.
Please do your homework on this like I have; visit the above link and see the clients Phil has worked with. Who would you trust when buying this rare piece? Phil wouldn't let me advertise him having worked on this 2600 if I didn't allow him to do the repairs he needed to; he knew I might consider selling it eventually and he prides himself on the work he does. Other units here on eBay have been advertised as being serviced but who knows by who…
…despite the outer case wear and tear this fully serviced Arp comes with a warranty on the following work:
Power supply replaced with a rebuilt stock ARP 2600 power supply and should not require service for many years.
All boards and sliders were washed in a chemical bath
Replaced all rusty jack washers (83 total)
Replaced all rusty jack nuts (83 total)
Replaced Reverb tank w/ OEM tank
Replaced both speakers w/ two (2) new speakers (custom-made in the USA to Arp's original specs, 40 ohm coils and the same mounting holes)
All the electronics and everything has been restored to full working order according to ARP factory specs!
All sections have been tested and calibrated and are fully operational!
The VCO' s are totally stable and there is no perceptible drift even when left on overnight!
THE BAD
Phil did not restore the outer cabinet or the slightly worn front panel silkscreen so it remains worn / as-is. The unit is missing (12) slider caps and no replacements could be purchased at the time of repair (but the sliders themselves are easily useable / not damaged in any way). Cosmetically, the outer casing Tolex and hardware has seen better days as can be confirmed in my detailed pics but this is strictly cosmetic! The wood case that is covered by the Tolex continues to function as it should to protect this precious synth.
This 2600 comes with lid, power cable, owners manual & patch book."

When you think of FM synthesis you typically think of Yamaha and Casio's Phase Distortion synthesis. If you remember from this post, neither were actually FM synthesis? What was KORG's method?

Technics SX-WSA1R WSA1 Acoustic Physical Modelling Synthesiser
Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction
"This is a remarkable synthesiser launched by Technics in 1995. Technics did not produce them in large numbers because they were very expensive when launched at nearly £2,200. At the time, and even by today’s standards, it was revolutionary combining samples as the drivers for a physical modelling synthesiser. By using samples as the drivers, Panasonic Technics were able to produce a powerful 32-channel multi-timbre synthesiser with 64 notes polyphony. This means you can use the WSA1R for large productions and layered sounds.
Although deep in its capability, the WSA1R is easy to programme because it has an excellent user interface. The interface comprises of a large display and many function keys. The synth can produce some very powerful sounds with a lot of expression and dynamics. In my experience it produces much more expression than a typical modern sample-based synthesiser. It also has a two-axis joystick “ball” which you can modulate the sounds in real time.
The module has a floppy drive which can take 720kb and 1.44mb disks. The drive can be used to back-up sounds and also play standard midi files directly from disk. This, combined with its GM setting, makes it a great synth for playing back tracks live or in the studio for practice.
There is some interesting information about the WSA1R including a downloadable manual and other resources at http://xy.cx/synth/wsa1/

This means you can use the WSA1R for large productions and layered sounds.Although deep in its capability, the WSA1R is easy to programme because it has an excellent user interface.

XAOC Devices Moskwa Sketchbook
"This is a collection of analog modular synth compositions showcasing the creative capabilities of XAOC Devices Moskwa roto sequencer eurorack module. Each auditory sketch on this project was recorded live in one take over a 3 week period with no outside sequencing from the computer. I originally intended to record 5-6 sketches for the project... but the Moskwa ended up being so fun and inspiring that I wound up with 13 compositions for this project.
This release comes with a PDF Moskwa sketchbook featuring art by Shiro Fujioka and visual patch diagrams of some of the sketches heard on this album that you can try and or re interpret with your own modular synth."

Oberheim OB-Xa with Midi and MRam with Unlimited Patches?

"Oberheim OBXa made in 1981. Where to start? First she's had her keybed restored with super low action. It almost feels like you're playing a toy, I'm dead serious. Is just that light of a touch now. No more "click click." Next I've added midi to her from electrongate.com which is the business of Paul White who worked at Oberheim all those years. The midi is the exact replica of the factory midi from the early days of Oberheim. Next I've added the MRam card which eliminates the need for a battery PLUS you can store an unlimited amount of programs if you can find it LoL. Of course all these upgrades are not permanent so you can go back to original if you wanted too. Lastly she got some brand new sides, awesome black walnut. Just look at that wood grain! The originals are not included."
