MMTA Spring SYNTHFEST 2013: John Bowen Demos the Rotors on the Solaris

Published on Mar 18, 2013 matrixsynth·274 videos

One of my favorite features of the John Bowen Solaris. You won't find this in other synths. The simplest way to think of a rotor is a cycle through four oscillators. You can set whatever oscillators you want in the four rotor slots in any order you like, including up to four external audio inputs. If you want you can set all rotors to just OSC 1. Why would you do that? Because you can set modulations on OSC 1 and then use the rotor to skip through the changes. You can then cycle the rotor into the audio frequency range to create new timbres not possible on other synths. You can also adjust the crossfade level for the rotor for either smooth sounding or more edgy transitions. Everything is open to modulation as well. This is a new and pretty incredible method of timbral synthesis for source oscillators when you think about it. Be sure to see the John Bowen Synth Design website for more.

A side note: this marks the last post of my own content on the MMTA Spring SYNTHFEST 2013. More is coming in from others though, so stay tuned.

As an established gospel and jazz fusion keyboardist, Cory knows the importance of having an inspiring instrument at your fingertips: "The Kronos does a great job of making you feel as if the instrument that you're playing is right in the same room as you. Every time I browse another sound, it kind of gets me into a different place that makes me just want to play, as if I am a violin player, or if I have an actual electric piano in my house. It does a great job of making you feel that you're playing the actual instrument."

Controlling a Eurorack Modular with the iPad & Lemur

Controlling my Eurorack from my iPad (Lemur) from Icaro Ferre on Vimeo.

"In this video I'm trying to use the Lemur app on my iPad to control my Doepfer A-106-5 module in my Eurorack.

So basically the A-106-5 is receiving CV from my Expert Sleepers ES-3 (which is receiving data from the Silent Way plugin on my mac via lightpipe).
The Lemur app is connected to my mac and it's mapped to Silent Way's parameters.

Kinda cool, kinda nerdy.

PS: I know I'm moving the camera a lot but my idea was to document the process so I didn't pay much attention to the excessive amount of movement! Sorry :)"

Very easy to program, sounds great, pads, drones, leads, basses… Very versatile synth. Awesome arpeggiator. On board FX. Delay, Reverb, Distortion, Chorus, Eq, Panning, and Vocoder. Tested and working 100%! Good physical condition, but missing 2 knobs and the attack slider. No power cord, but it takes a generic 3 prong power cord.

"The filterbank is a dual hp/bp/lp filter than can be used in series or parallel. It has incredible sync options for syncing the harmonics of the filters. It has incredibly warm tube type distortion at the input stage and a really great LFO for even further effect variables. It also has 2 sets of envelopes for further shaping the waves. The sherman filterbank V1 has a nice depth that the V2 didn't seem to have, in my opinion. I have owned both and they are fairly different machines with different nature and characteristics aside from features. This is an early run V1 in great condition. Sounds excellent and really provides an extreme variety of possibilities..."

MFB Dominion X SED Programmable Analogue Synthesizer

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"The Dominion X is MFB's latest synthesizer. It combines analogue synthesis, programmability and modular patching. With advanced circuits, increased functionality and a new design, the Dominion X is the first of MFB's next generation musical instruments.

The Dominion X offers 3 x oscillators for maximum flexibility. Each waveform can be varied in symmetry. Besides altering the pulse width of a rectangle, you may also continuously turn a saw tooth into a triangle and a triangle into a sine. All oscillators also offer ring modulation. In addition, VCO 2 and VCO 3 can be synced to VCO1. Finally, VCO3 can modulate the frequency of VCO 1 and VCO 2. The analogue oscillator circuit is processor-controlled for stable tuning. To complete the available sound sources, noise or an external audio input can be added to the VCOs in the Dominion X's mixer section.

The filter offers 6 x operation modes. Available are 3 x low pass variations with 12, 18 and 24 dB/oct. slopes. Also available are high pass-, band pass and a notch filter with slopes of 12 dB/oct. respectively 6 dB/oct. Variable filter modulations are possible via an invertible envelope, keyboard tracking, LFO, VCO, different MIDI controllers as well as by the use o the CV-input.

The 2 x ADSR-type envelops are internally routed to the VCF- and VCA-sections. In addition, envelope 1 can also modulate the VCO section. LFOs 1 and 2 offer six waveform shapes including sample & hold. They may be switched to one-shot-modes to emulation simple envelopes. A third sine-LFO works in combination with a keyboard's modulation wheel and can dynamically address the VCO, VCF and VCA sections.

Modulations are assigned by the use of selector switches, located at the destinations. This allows easily setting and re-routing internal modulation paths, ideally for your live-performance.

To integrate external modulators, control- and audio sources, the Dominion X offers 9 x inputs. Therefore, oscillators, filter, VCA, CV/gate and mixer can be easily combined with other analogue synthesizers such as MFB's Megazwerg, analogue sequencers such as MFB's Urzwerg Pro or modular synthesizer systems.

An additional selector switch allows assignment of velocity for up to eleven modulation destinations.

The Dominion X offers 128 x programmable patches for your personal sound creations. To support sound programming without an attached keyboard, different demo sequences are available. To use the Dominion X as a filter box for external audio sources, the VCA can be opened permanently. Finally, there is an insert available to integrate an effect or distortion unit into the signal path.

The Dominion X has the following dimensions: 330mm x 170mm x 60mm. An external power supply is included.

The new SED filter design contains 2 x different types of filters. Once is the 12 dB MFB multifilter with 12 dB lowpass and 12 dB highpass, bandpass und notch. Sound can be described as clean and powerful with steady catchy resonance behaviour. The second is new SED filter with 24/12 dB lowpass. This single ended discrete (transistors) filter can be driven into clippng zone, especially the 12 dB variant. The 24 dB lowpass can be sound almost clean when you drive the vco mixer below half of possible value.

Features

3 x VCOs with wave shaping and ring modulation
Dual-Sync and Dual-FM features
6-fold multimode-filter including 3 x low pass configurations with 12-24 dB
Patch-section for external CV/gate-control
Velocity routing matrix with 11 x destinations
3 x LFOs with 2 x LFOS offering one-shot-modes and reset

I found this little box at a Y-mens money raising sale and because they thought it was just another old modem I got it for the equivalent of 2$ (which some people say is written $2). But I knew that it wasn't because modems ususally doesn't come with a MIDI interface.
