GIANTS | Herb Deutsch

video upload by Moog Music Inc

"'GIANTS' is a platform for legendary electronic musicians and innovators to express themselves through the art of storytelling. This new documentary series, filmed and produced by Moog Music, is about honoring and preserving the legacy of these artists and sharing their untold stories with the world.

The first installment of 'GIANTS' focuses on Herb Deutsch, co-inventor of the Moog modular synthesizer. The composer, music educator, and friend and collaborator of Bob Moog journeys back in time to talk about some of music history’s most prolific moments and expand on “the perfect definition” of what music is and can be: sound organized in time.

Calder Plays Theremin | Behind the Scenes
video upload by Moog Music Inc

"We invite you to take a behind-the-scenes look at the making of "Calder Plays Theremin," directed by filmmaker Michael Tyburski, featuring an original sound piece by composer and sound artist Dorit Chrysler.

In a new piece filmed at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, Berlin-based thereminist (and our dear friend) Dorit Chrysler brings a collection of electronic instruments together with sculptures on display in the museum’s 'Alexander Calder: Modern from the Start' exhibition for a novel experiment in sound and motion.

'Calder Plays Theremin' pays homage to both inventor Leon Theremin, whose eponymous invention has inspired generations of musicians and musical instrument creators, and sculptor Alexander Calder, who reimagined the art of sculpture as “an experiment in space and motion, upending centuries-old notions that sculpture should be static, grounded, and dense by making artworks that often move freely and interact with their surroundings,” according to MoMA. In this piece, Calder’s sculptures control the sound of each theremin, making for a truly unique and magical composition among these objects, personified as artists for the occasion. 'To hear a theremin trigger the Moog Model 15 synthesizer in the Sculpture Garden—priceless. The sound of a Calder mobile element rubbing against the antenna of a theremin producing microtonal sound in slight movement—breathtaking.' -composer and thereminist Dorit Chrysler

Visit moogmusic.com to read our complete interview with Dorit, where she shares what inspired her to develop the concept for this piece."

"Text from the back cover:

SYNTH GEMS 1 is your guide to an eclectic and amazing collection of synthesizers as art. Experience the history, technology, and sonic innovation of electronic music in a completely new way.

With their widely diverse designs and intentions, synthesizers offer a world of fascination. What thoughts and emotions guided their creators? What do they say about the era when they were created? How do their form and function define one another, and the music they make?

As much for serious synth enthusiasts as for newcomers to electronic music, SYNTH GEMS 1 is an enlightening look into this wonderful world of vintage synthesizers.

An art gallery of electronic aesthetics

SYNTH GEMS 1 takes you on a tour of over 60 remarkable keyboards — large and small, famed and rare, elegant, beautiful, and brutal… and ranging from classics that define entire genres to rare oddities that bring their own grace to the world.

Each synthesizer is presented in a series of finely detailed photographs, with a discussion of its origins and importance. From the dawn of commercial synthesis to the close of the Twentieth Century, the lives and times of these unique instruments are chronicled in exquisite pictures and thoughtful stories – mingling music, technology, commerce, and visual art.

Meet the synthesizer

Besides a brief introduction to the basic elements of synthesizer design, as well as a comprehensive Glossary, the book is rounded out by tours of the three museums that opened their collections to be photographed, and a selection of resources for further study: books, films, educational initiatives, online resources – even ways to play with these sounds at home.

Known classics and significant rarities

Explore the designs and read the stories behind instruments from famous brands such as ARP, Casio, Clavia, Korg, Moog, Oberheim, Roland, Sequential, and Yamaha – as well as vintage gems from Crumar, Electronic Dream Plant, Elgam, E-mu, Ensoniq, Fairlight, Kawai, Gleeman, Lord Synthesisers, Steiner-Parker, Technics, Waldorf, and more.

The GEMS Series from Bjooks celebrate the inner and outer aesthetics of electronic musical instruments:

Detailed and beautiful color photographs, taken specifically for this series
Insightful discussion of the technical details – and the historical significance – of each instrument
Clear and inviting introductions to the concepts that guide these designs"

Analogue Solutions Announces Colossus #4

I almost skipped posting this as the only news here is there's a 4th production run of the Colossus. I guess it's interesting knowing how many are out there. What's also interesting is I always assumed the Colossus was either built in a limited initial run, or it was built per order only. This is a mammoth endeaver and each one costs 25,000 GBP which comes out to $35,000 US. It is $4500 less than this little Sennheiser VSM201 Vocoder!

Note, the images in this post appear to be stock. You can find demos of the Colossus in previous posts here.

Press release follows:
""Analogue Solutions announces forthcoming fourth run of Colossus supersized synth that trips back to the future of analogue

KINGSWINFORD, UK: following a showstopping showcase during its introduction at SynthFest UK 2019 in Sheffield, British boutique electronic instruments innovator Analogue Solutions is proud to announce a forthcoming fourth run of Colossus — its supersized synth that trips back to the future of analogue, albeit symbolising so much more than a powerful analogue ‘workstation’ with no fewer than 12 VCOs (Voltage-Controlled Oscillators) beating at its monumental musical heart, rather representing art, architecture, and superlative studio furniture at its hand-built best by taking its design cues from the colossal classic that is the EMS Synthi 100, although no Synthi circuit was cloned or copied in making the destined-to-be-classic Colossus fit for a new generation of high-flying owners — as of February 15…

"This is a classic analog synthesizer from the inimitable Moog Music. Made in Williamsville, New York in 1975, this is a hand-crafted work of art, and it sounds absolutely like a Moog synthesizer. It's nearing the 50 year old mark, and as such it displays some cosmetic wear, but nothing that affects playability or functionality. This machine is perfect working order, and all the pots and switches operate smoothly without any crackling or popping. The keys all play just fine, and the ribbon controller works great, and is properly scaled to provide one octave range in either direction. I had the synth serviced and calibrated last year, and its attached power cable was replaced with a standard IEC socket."

DOUG McKECHNIE – SAN FRANCISCO MOOG: 1968-72

Available on BandCamp here

"Never-before-released analog-synth recordings that rewrite the early history of electronic music.

Edition of 300 vinyl LPs. Out 10/23/20.

San Francisco Moog: 1968-72 documents for the first time a critical missing link in the history of electronic music.

In 1968, a young Bay Area native named Doug McKechnie got hold of one the very first Moog Modular Series III synthesizers ever made—serial number 004—and began experimenting with it. Soon, he was hauling its many components around the region, performing improvised concerts for audiences whose minds had been opened by psychedelia but whose ears were often unfamiliar with electronic sounds. Working outside of academia and traditional recording studios—the only places one could find Moogs at the time—he invented his own way to play the instrument on the fly. He recorded many of his performances.

After four years, McKechnie lost access to the expensive Moog. He moved on to other musical and creative endeavors. The recordings he made on quarter-inch reel-to-reel tape gathered dust in a closet for decades, and have never been released until now.

The music on San Francisco Moog captures McKechnie eschewing the somber rigor of the academic electronic music of the era for a more free-flowing, melodic sound that nonetheless explores the limits of the instrument’s plastic sonic possibilities. Using the keyboard and two 24-step sequencers that came with the deluxe Moog, he created music that wove together multiple electronic voices in the moment, an innovation typically ascribed to later pioneers like Tangerine Dream (who would end up the owners of the very same Moog—but that’s another story).

Cuts like “The First Exploration @ SF Radical Labs, 1968” and “Berkeley Art Museum” find McKechnie building and expanding musical moods that capture the in-the-moment nature of his playing. “Meditation Moog 1968” finds him taking a more minimalist approach, while still exploring the instrument’s timbral possibilities. “Baseline” and “Crazy Ray” sound more like fully formed musical compositions, with melody, counterpoint, and even hooks of a sort.

San Francisco Moog not only proves a transportive listening experience, it casts a new light on the accepted history of electronic music."

"Introducing Dark Series for Matriarch & Grandmother

Dark Series for Matriarch and Grandmother strikes the perfect balance between classic and modern, featuring an all-black aesthetic that invokes the timeless look of early Moog modular systems—with all the functionality and versatility these two state-of-the-art sound design machines are known for.

Today, we are excited to announce a new addition to our semi-modular family: Dark Series for Grandmother and Matriarch. The new visual twist for these two synthesizers is a nod to the modular control panel designs that inspired their very creation.
Grandmother and Matriarch's circuits, spirit, and analog effects are inspired by the classic Moog modular synthesizers designed by Bob Moog during the '60s and '70s. These instruments quickly became a staple in studio setups and live performance settings, a go-to first synthesizer for beginners, and a multifaceted creative tool used by musicians of all skill levels to explore the power of analog sound.
A complement to the distinct multi-colored artwork of the original Matriarch and Grandmother synthesizers, Dark Series presents a style option that celebrates the intersection of tradition and innovation.

New Patches & Firmware Updates

Significant firmware updates for Matriarch and Grandmother are now available for all owners. These updates feature a new sync engine that keeps the internal arp/sequencer, analog clock, and MIDI all tightly locked in phase; a new easy method to reset global settings to defaults; a new Envelope Multi-Trig mode for Grandmother; and many other enhancements, features, and bug fixes for both instruments based on customer feedback.

Alongside these firmware enhancements, new exploratory patches are now available to download for Matriarch and Grandmother registered owners. These 30 inspiring patches (16 for Grandmother and 14 for Matriarch) are designed to guide your eternal experimentation and open your mind to each instrument’s unparalleled analog sound."
