Waveformer

Published on Jan 18, 2019 Waveformer

Playlist:

1. Monolimp (Monologue, Volca FM, Novation Circuit)
A limping synth jam featuring the Korg Monologue, Volca FM, Novation Circuit and Zoom MS70-CDR.

The Novation Circuit is the master clock, with tempo 90 BPM. The Monologue and the Volca follow suit, but the delays on the MS-70CDRs have tempo set to 75 and 77 BPM, resulting in a limping 5/8-ish time signature.
2. Eclipse (Monologue, Volca FM, Novation Circuit, EHX720, MS-70CDR)
Total eclipse of the moon over Norway tonight. A mellow jam featuring the Korg Monologue, Volca FM, Novation Circuit, EHX720 Looper and Zoom MS70-CDR.

The chords were played into the EHX720 looper note by note from the Monologue. The Circuit is doing arp, base and drums. The Volca FM is doing a simple repeating pattern. And the Monologue is used for the solo.

Novation Circuit Components Updated to V1.3

Published on Aug 4, 2016 NovationTV

Novation // Circuit 1.3 - Components

Update: videos above added.

The Novation Circuit continues to get better and better. The latest via Novation:

"Circuit v1.3 Brings exciting new Sample Flip functionality and greater software flexibility.

The free v1.3 firmware update for Novation’s Circuit groovebox makes it more streamlined and powerful than ever. The update, which is recommended for all users, delivers several feature requests from Circuit’s dedicated owners’ group, plus a number of usability tweaks that make Circuit one of the most capable music-making platforms on the market.

Sample Flip
The brand new Sample Flip function lets you create multi-sample drum lines on each of Circuit’s drum tracks. In previous versions of Circuit firmware, only one sound could be used on each drum track. Now, you can select a different sample for each step in all four of the drum tracks. So for example, you can have a kick and a snare on ‘Drum 1’, freeing up other tracks for additional instrumentation or sample playback. This totally transforms Circuit’s drum- and sample-programming functionality and opens it up to new styles of music.

Sample Preview
This commonly requested feature lets you play and preview your samples without programming them into a pattern. In the studio, this speeds up the drum-programming process immensely due to the speed at which you can audition sounds. On stage, you can live-play any sample along to your existing drum patterns, using Circuit’s velocity-sensitive pads. Let the finger-drumming commence.

Session Colours & Single Session Backup
Using the Circuit Librarian — part of the Components suite of browser-based tools (see below) — you can now change the colour of the LED that represents your Session on the Circuit hardware. This means you can use colours to differentiate styles — pink for house, orange for Techno, for example — or to discern between different sections of your songs: green for intros, purple for main sections, say. Also new with Circuit v1.3 is the facility to manage sessions individually, rather than in a batch of 32.

Sound Management
Updates have been made to the Sample Import tool in Circuit Components (more information below). You can now change the placement of your samples so you can, for example, group similar sounds together to make it easier to remember which sample is on which pad. (For example, you could have kick drums on row 1; snares on row 2; vocal snippets on row 3.)

Bug Fixes
A bug relating to the timing of Session switching (leading to the very occasional missed playback of sounds on step one of the proceeding Session) has been fixed. Long samples, which were automatically faded out in prior versions of the Firmware, can now be played in their entirety, providing there is sufficient sample space on the Circuit.

About Circuit Components
Components is a suite of tools, launched in April 2016, that are accessed through a web portal at https://components.novationmusic.com. Here, you can import samples, organise your backups, and find links to download the latest firmware. Circuit Components uses browser-based Web-MIDI and is compatible with Google Chrome and Opera browsers.

Our commitment to future firmware
Circuit has a fast-growing and active user base, who are regularly making feature suggestions.

Releasing regular feature updates has always been part of the product roadmap for Circuit, so expect more features in the months to come. For now, we’re confident that the new functionality of Circuit v1.3 will keep you occupied for the foreseeable future."

5th Annual Moog Circuit Bending Challenge

"In celebration of the creative curiosity that fueled a young Bob Moog and all of those that follow in his footsteps, Moog is sponsoring its 5th Annual Circuit Bending Contest.

This year, Moog’s circuit bending challenge is to take a battery powered device and circuit bend it into an instrument capable of creating new and unique sounds. We want others to be inspired by your device, and share in the experience of creating something new and exciting. Your project has to be completed in a manner that can be replicated by others. You’ll need to create a step by step list of instructions so that anyone else can replicate the process and create the same instrument. Just to make things a bit more interesting, you’ll need to complete the entire project for $70 or less."

The following is a playlist of last year's finalists.

And the official press release via Novation:

"The latest update is an advancement to the Novation groovebox that introduces several user-requested features, and brings all-new sessions, samples and synth patches.

Since its launch over a year ago, Novation’s commitment to updating Circuit has brought transformative new features to the product. From Sample Import and Sample Flip to the Components suite of browser-based utilities, Circuit’s capabilities have gone from strength to strength with every new Firmware release. Circuit v1.4 brings even more features to Circuit, making it an even more powerful addition to any live or studio performance system.

In the run-up to the new release, Novation celebrated its favourite milestones in its campaign ‘The Evolution of Circuit’. Working in collaboration with London design house Studio Murugiah, 12 key milestones of Circuit’s life have been immortalised in illustrated form (which can be viewed here). From the birth of Circuit and the Start Something campaign, to Mike Will’s leaked Instagram post, to the time KiNK and CALC jammed with Circuit in an apartment, the illustrations chart Circuit’s path to the present day and the launch of the newest Firmware.

The latest update (version 1.4) brings a new pattern-length parameter for the drum tracks to enable polyrhythmic drum sequences, where previously the drum patterns were locked to 16 steps. Also, it’s now possible to switch each track’s patterns on the fly so you can create fast-changing fills and pattern-change effects. You can now change the colour of the sessions from the unit itself (instead of from the Components software), and there are new setup options to optimise Circuit’s interoperation with other MIDI hardware. Lastly, Novation have created brand new samples, synth patches and sessions, to give you even more inspiration.

Here's what's new:

Polyrhythmic Drum Patterns
You can now set the length of your drum patterns individually to create mind-bending cross-rhythms and pattern variations.

Instant Pattern Switch
Change patterns instantly and combine with automation for glitchy drum fills and beat repeats.

Session Colour Select
Now available from the unit; change your Session colour when saving.

Clock Settings
Improved setup page with more versatile MIDI control. Separate transmit and receive settings for MIDI clock.

Circuit Packs
All-new samples, synth patches and sessions to completely transform your Circuit. Use Components to load the new Circuit Pack and, of course, backup your existing work."

Novation Circuit v1.6 Update Adds Panning, Dimming, Micro Steps, and More

Published on Sep 26, 2017 NovationTV

Circuit v1.6 is available to download from Components.

via Novation:

"We've created the Circuit v1.6 firmware update using most-requested features, bringing the community’s imagining of the Circuit sequencer, synth and sampler to life.

Our users are awesome, they're always coming up with new ideas. Using the most requested features of the Circuit Owners group and other websites, we bring the community’s imagining of the Circuit sequencer, synth and sampler to life. Circuit v1.6 is the latest firmware update that we've created.

We knew how much people wanted to pan on Circuit, so we listened to our users, and our engineers did everything they could to make it happen. Panning has been the single most requested feature of the community to date. It enables users to create audio landscapes or integrate with their favourite hardware.

While users are making the best of Circuit with music-making, we're pushing boundaries within Novation HQ. From this came Drum Micro Steps. Using Drum Micro Steps as a beat-building tool, Circuit v1.6 adds instant fills and stutter effects to users’ workflows, retriggering a sample up to six times within each step. J Dilla fans should probably board here.

Is Circuit’s brightness intruding when the room darkens? Light Dim will help to set the mood for all sorts of romantic occasions with its brightness setting. The features above are accompanied by FX Mute, which can be used to mute any unwanted FX, making it easier to connect with external hardware processors."

Korg Monologue, MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, NTS-1, Lone Rider

Korg Monologue, MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, NTS-1, Lone Rider part 1

Waveformer

"First part of a three-part jam, featuring the Korg Monologue, Arturia MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, and with Zoom MS-70CDR and Korg NTS-1 on effects.

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

This jam was originally planned to be around 45 minues, with lots of different parts, and lots of different solos played live on the Monologue. All planned out over 3 sheets of paper with plenty of notes scribbled all over. I did record a 45 minute take, but wasn't happy with the performance so I decided to scrap it. And ... playing the whole thing live was kind of daunting, so I chickened out and decided to make this a three part jam with a common soundset and some common themes.

This is the first of the three planned parts.

"Time to get a little more serious.

SH5-VCF is an all analog Eurorack adaptation of the Roland SH-5 mixer and Dual Filter. There are no filters-on-a-chip here. The SH5-VCF uses all discrete components and quality op-amps to work its special mojo. Like on the original, the Low Pass circuit is comprised of open-collector matched transistor pairs arranged in a diode ladder configuration. The lack of temperature compensation was also respected, so while the resonance can self-oscillate the v/oct keyboard tracking is about 3 octaves at best. This same configuration used in the Roland SH-1000 and the earlier System 100 (not 100m).

The Dual Filters: VCF + BPF
| VCF | The VCF (Voltage Controlled Filter) comprises one HP (High Pass) and one LP (Low Pass) circuit in series. VCF Select switch can choose 1) HP, 2) LP, or 3) BP (Band-Pass) configuration. Due to the unique design, the HP resonance is actually derived by overdriving the LP circuit.
| BPF | The dedicated BPF (Band Pass Filter) has its own discrete circuit distinct and apart from the VCF. The original BPF circuit has been respected, but greatly expanded upon using a proprietary voltage controlled feedback path to enable frequency control via external signals. This feature wasn’t available on the original design. The original did not have a buffered output jack for the BPF neither, as the SH5-VCF does. The BPF Level attenuator will affect the main output only.

The MIXER
There are four audio signal inputs, each with its own fader pot and filter routing switch. Each routing switch can send each audio line to either VCF, BPF, or both VCF + BPF.

The 3 CV MODULATIONS – Choose Wisely
Incoming CV signals can be used to modulate any filter frequency cutoff. Signals can be up to +/- 10Vpp DC polar or AC bi-polar at the inputs.
| CV1 | has inverting and non-inverting behavior where zero is at 12:00.
| CV2 | has non-inverting behavior for both filters, and inverting available to VCF only
| KB | is a non-inverting V/OCT Keyboard Tracking control available to both the VCF and BPF, typically a Keyboard Voltage – but can be any kind of polar or bi-polar signal.

A Eurorack power connection ribbon cable is included. To get the most out of the filter experience follow your filter with a VCA. The filters require startup voltages on the low end to avoid audible thump, so there will be sub-frequency audio seepage. A post-filter VCA (sold separately) is recommended to gate the filter. Be sure to check out the G-Storm Electro 2xVCA when available.

The SH5-VCF pairs well with (sold separately)…
GSE 101-VCO + 101E output expander
GSE 2xVCA
GSE 2xADSR
Xaoc Batumi Quad LFO

Specs

Outputs | 1 main output, 1 BPF output

Fort Processor - experimental noise synthesiser circuit by Isn'tses

Published on Feb 3, 2019 Isn'tses music

"The Fort Processor is an experimental synth and noise effects circuit created by Isn'tses as part of Fort Process sound art festival 2018.

Available now as a DIY PCB or full kit."

via Thonk

"The Fort Processor is an experimental noise synthesiser and audio effect circuit designed by harsh fun noise duo ISN’TSES (Tim Drage & Lisa McKendrick) for Fort Process sound art festival. This event takes place in the tunnels and bunkers of Newhaven Fort on the Sussex coast, and the electronics and artwork of the synth are based on the layout of the site, with inspiration from the surrounding landscape and ocean.

The synth is controlled by light, touch pads, 3 knobs, and a trimmer. Audio is created and manipulated by four sections which have been combined using a circuit-bent approach:

1. The audio input, (3.5mm) used to connect devices such as a radio, walkman, phone, tablet, mp3, instrument etc. This signal is distorted using high gain then run through a frequency divider to add two noisy sub-octaves. When no input jack is connected, the circuit feeds back and self-oscillates.

circuit bent e-mu xl7 command station w/ mm1 module

via this auction
also see this post
"this auction is for the circuit bent emu command station and the mm1 midi module the unit was purchased as a brand new instrument. the previous owner said the command station was used for only a few hours. i have confirmed this and the unit internally is pristine. all knobs, buttons, outputs, velo pads, ribbon, etc are in pristine shape and just like new. the outer shell was painted and salvaged from a emu mp-7. internally it is a xl7 and is absolutely in mint shape. i've had this unit for a few weeks now and can confirm everything is working perfectly both in mm1 and emu command station. this is a one-off offer and most likely will be the only one in existence

the following audio is several drum tracks played in realtime with a simple appegiator programmed for each sound. the emu sports 32 independant arpeggiators. the drums are then circuit bent and leads into a formant synth texture controlled with a wind controller.

"This unit is much more rare than the SH-3A. This is the SH3, Serial number in the mid #1700's Very few of the SH-3 were made. Notable players were Vangiles and Human League. The photos show some wear on the case itself. Otherwise excellent condition and everything functions correctly. All pots, sliders and buttons, keys work perfectly no scratch static noise when engaged. Best price for a fully functioning SH3 on the Web. I've been able to program 303 to 106 to 808/909 sounds and more."

circuit bent e-mu mp7 command station by spunkytoofers

It looks like the circuit bent command station in this video is now up for auction here.

"-circuit bent with freely routeable 24 point rotary patchbay for the maximum in flexibility.

-points were carefully researched and arranged in order of harmonics whenever possible. very intuitive interface.

-chrome chickenhead knobs

-heavy duty toggles activates rotary patchbay connections

-db25 connector added- adds the option of expanding the e-mu commandstation units with the spunkytoofers mm1 midi module.

connector supplies power to the mm1 as well as allows circuit bending over midi via added midi circuitry.

all spunkytoofers instruments are now all compatible with mm1.

mm1 is sold seperately.

-unit is expandable with up to 3 more e-mu rom cards

-2 blue jewel lenses with bright blue lighting

-solid build and and quality components used throughout

-unit in superb shape. all functions work perfectly.

very light cosmetic scuffs but not very noticeable. unit was cleaned throughly after assembly.

don't have a way to check the optical output but should be fine.

-comes with power cord, bend diagram, and original owners manual

-support and warranty work covered for modifications

the e-mu command stations are perfect companions for the mm1 for a centerpiece for modular circuit bending over midi. there is no better way to sequence all your circuit bent devices than starting with one of the most powerful hardware sequencers ever made. modular sequencing and circuit bending is all possible through the e-mu command stations. the internal synthesizer in the command station is truly a powerful synthesizer and practically all waveforms within respond to the pressures of circuit bending. there are complex filters onboard and can virtually create any kind of circuit bent sound so long as you can picture it in your head. want a circuit bent speak and spell looping sound in one of the 32 sequencer tracks available? no problem. bend vocal roms applied with formant filters and will sound like a bent speak and spell. it does a whole lot more and covers alot of sonic territory within the onboad circuit bent synthesizer. the synthesizer sports a huge modulation matrix both in synthesis and circuit bending.

simple drum patterns are reconfigured rhythmically, tonally, and you can shape the circuit bent sounds any way you like with the powerful proteus 2000 synth engine onboard. 128 voices of sequenced mayhem is possible on this device. you can also add your controllers on top of the sequencer to any of the 16 voice parts. in addition to onboard sequencing you can sequence outboard midi gear. this makes it perfect companions with any spunkytoofers instruments with midi since they can integrate seamlessly.

the video below is a circuit bent e-mu mp7 and xl7 demonstration. both units are identically the same except they have different sound sets with the option to expand sound sets with rom simms. they both feature breakouts for spunkytoofers mm1 midi module expansion for modular circuit bending over midi.

1st demo [previously posted] is one pattern being mangled manual with a rotary patchbay

2nd demo [previously posted] is a midi multi-setup on the command station with setups for akai ewi wind controller, akai mpk25 keyboard and sequenced drones being interjected sporadically. all sounds are arbitrarily circuit bent throughout the demo via midi. the command station itself is used over midi to trigger it's own bends."

Next Rez30 Filter (MAM RS3) 3 Band Pass Resonant Filter

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is same unit as MAM RS3 but under different label. No longer made these are rare and a wonderful filter for your electronic music. You set the centers of 3 resonant frequencies and then sweep around them for beautiful swells and sweeps under control of the internal LFO or outboard CV control...

This is MONO in but STEREO out here's a good description -

Controls

Stereo Pan
The RS3 gets it's "mono in, stereo out" designation from Filter 1 and Filter 3 being panable from hard left to hard right. With the control fully counterclockwise, Filter 1 is panned hard left, and Filter 3 is panned hard right. Moving the control to the center places all filters "right up the middle" basically making the unit mono, and then continuing to full clockwise reverse the position of Filter 1 and 3.
Refering back to Mode 3 of the LFO modulation, note that the modulation of Filter 1 and 3 comes from different sources. This is where you will get the greatest stereo effect from the RS3, and this is where the "Jarre Strings" sound lives.

This control also has an effect over how the RS3 can create a stereo spread when using the Envelope Follower. Again, Filter 1 and 3 are panable across the stereo field, and with the three follower channels each driving a separate filter, there is magic to be had.

Resonance
Controls the resonance of the filters.
Volume
Controls the output volume.
Bypass
Switches between the dry and effected signals.
Bandpass 1
Controls the frequency of filter 1.
Bandpass 2
Controls the frequency of filter 2.
Bandpass 3
Controls the frequency of filter 3.
LFO Rate
Controls the speed of the LFO.
LFO Depth
Controls the depth of the LFO sweeps.
LFO Mode 1/2/3
Mode 1: LFO 1+ to BPF 1, LFO 1+ to BPF 2, LFO 1+ to BPF 3
Mode 2: LFO 1+ to BPF 1, LFO 2 to BPF 2, LFO 1+ to BPF 3
Mode 3: LFO 1+ to BPF 1, LFO 1- to BPF 2, LFO 2 to BPF 3
Env Depth
This is a classic envelope follower which allows for sweeping the pass frequency of the filters. But, there's a twist. The envelope follower does some frequency separation at three ranges, "Low", "Mid", and "High", with a separate follower circuit at the output of each of these "channels".
Env Decay
Controls the decay of the envelope
Env Polarity +/-
The polarity of the signal from the envelope follower is switchable from Postive to Negative allowing for classic Down sweeps, as well as Up sweeps, of the filters.
Man/Ext Modulation Depth
When something is plugged into the External jack, the Manual control becomes an polarized attenuator for the signal. In the Middle position, the external signal will have no effect. Moving clockwise from center will cause the external signal to sweep the pass frequency up, while moving counterclockwise from center will cause a sweep down."

Future Radio by Circuit 3

video upload by Circuit 3

New release from an upcoming album by supporting member, Circuit 3.

The single Future Radio is available on Bandcamp here: https://circuit3.bandcamp.com/album/future-radio

Additional details:

"Circuit3 releases new single Future Radio ahead of new album

Dublin electronic artist Circuit3 has signed with Manchester's AnalogueTrash label for the new album 'Technology For The Youth', ahead of which comes the upbeat lead single 'Future Radio'.

Retro-futuristic but undeniably human, Circuit3 is the alias of Irish electronic artist and songwriter Peter Fitzpatrick. Using analogue synthesizers as a vehicle for lyrical storytelling, this music is heavily influenced by the classic era of electronic pop.

A childhood fascination with space provides the emotional narrative arc for 'Technology For The Youth', a collection of crisp electronic pop songs and atmospheric instrumentals created with an enviable array of analogue synthesizers. It focuses squarely on that period before digital synthesis, just as the lyrics are informed by those endeavours in space exploration pre-dating the first Space Shuttle left Cape Canaveral.

Circuit3 debuted with the 'siliconchipsuperstar' LP (2018), followed by the album 'The Price Of Nothing & The Value Of Everything' (2019), praised by no less than Martyn Ware (The Human League, Heaven17).

'Future Radio' is available across online stores, including Spotify and Apple Music, as well as via Bandcamp, where the full album can also be pre-ordered. 'Technology For The Youth' will be released, on vinyl and digitally, on July 15 2022."

Studio Electronics SE1X Analog Synth

"100% perfect and a BEAST of a synth. It can sound like a 3 thousand dollar moog or a 5 thousand dollar oberheim by changing between filters at the press of a button. Pretty easy to use as far as sound design goes with the screen it has. There are no buried submenus and other junk. This is the se-1x not the se-1 so the stepping issues you could hear when rolling off the filter have been fixed between these units perfectly, i know because i used to have a regular se1 prior :)

Voices: One.
Audio Outputs: One
External Inputs: One.
Interface: 1 rotary encoder, 24 knobs, 21 illuminated switches.
Display: 20 x 4 backlit liquid crystal.

Circuit Bent E-mu MP7 Command Station

via this auction
"-circuit bent with freely routeable 24 point rotary patchbay for the maximum in flexibility.
-points were carefully researched and arranged in order of harmonics whenever possible. very intuitive interface.
-chrome chickenhead knobs
-heavy duty toggles activates rotary patchbay connections
-db25 connector added- adds the option of expanding the e-mu commandstation units with the spunkytoofers mm1 midi module.

connector supplies power to the mm1 as well as allows circuit bending over midi via added midi circuitry.

the mm1 allows a tightly integrated system with the e-mu that can trigger it's own bends and other compatible bent devices.

all spunkytoofers instruments are now all compatible with mm1.

mm1 is sold seperately.
-unit is expandable with up to 3 more e-mu rom cards
-2 blue jewel lenses with bright blue lighting
-solid build and and quality components used throughout
-don't have a way to check the spdif output but should be fine.
-comes with power cord, bend diagram, and pdf manual

128 voices of sequenced mayhem is possible on this device. you can also add your controllers on top of the sequencer to any of the 16 voice parts. in addition to onboard sequencing you can sequence outboard midi gear. this makes it perfect companions with any spunkytoofers instruments with midi since they can integrate seamlessly."
