What makes this Roland TR-808 sample kit different from all the rest?
These samples were captured first through an E-mu SP-1200. They were then recorded through an Api Channel Strip into an Antelope Orion AD/DA. Rossum Electro-Music Announces 35th Anniversary SP-1200

Rossum Electro-Music 35th Anniversary SP-1200 Renovation Published on Jan 16, 2020 Rossum Electro-Music

"This year marks the 35th anniversary of the introduction of E-mu System’s iconic 'SP' sampling percussion system, instruments that have become emblematic of the golden age of hip hop creativity. To mark this milestone, Dave Rossum (the co-founder of E-mu Systems) and the team at Rossum Electro-Music are creating an extremely limited number of 'renovated' SP-1200s.

Beginning with an original SP-1200, Dave and the team strip it down and rebuild it into a 'better-than-new' example of the classic sampling percussion system. It is then tested and calibrated to guarantee that it
provides the exact sonic character that has made the SP drum machines musical legends for 35 years (and counting).

The Rossum Electro-Music 35th Anniversary SP-1200 renovations include:

– A new 3.5″ disk drive and SD card floppy emulator integrated into the original SP-1200 software by Dave Rossum

– Manual filter cutoff frequency control sliders for the SSM 2044 analog filters for channels 1 and 2 added to the rear panel

– A new metal chassis

– A new panel overlay

– The top shell restored and painted 'SP Grey.'

– A new power supply with locking connector (and cool operation)

– A new LCD display with adjustable brightness and a selectable red, blue, or green color LED backlight

– All new play buttons

– All new programming buttons

– All new 1/4” and MIDI jacks

– All electrolytic and tantalum capacitors replaced with high-reliability ceramic or aluminum-poly caps

– All rotary potentiometers replaced with million cycle lifetime pots and installed with new knurled black metal knobs

– All slide potentiometers replaced with 200,000 cycle lifetime sliders and installed with new slider knobs

– All original trimmers replaced with 20-turn versions and precisely calibrated

– New rubber feet

– An individualized Dave Rossum signature plaque

– A dust-proof, crush-proof, lockable Pelican™ brand case with press-and pull latches, wheels, and an extendable handle.

– Full testing and calibration by Rossum Electro-Music

Availability

35th Anniversary SP-1200s are available directly from Rossum Electro-Music for US$7500.00.

Because the number of 35th Anniversary SP-1200s built will be limited by the availability of original SP-1200s, that number is likely to be extremely small. If you are interested in purchasing one, please fill out the wait list application you’ll find at the tab at the top of this page.

The 35th Anniversary SP-1200 is solely a product of Rossum Electro-Music LLC. Neither E-mu Systems nor Creative Labs participated in its production, and cannot be held responsible for this product."

Update via the waitlist page:

If you are interested in purchasing a 35th Anniversary SP-1200 Renovation, please fill out and submit the form below.

A few key notes:

– The price is US$7500.00.

– It includes a 1 year warranty on parts and labor.

– A place on the waiting list does not guarantee that you will eventually be able to purchase a 35th Anniversary SP-1200, as we have no way of knowing in advance exactly how many we will be able to produce. However, we will let you know when you are approaching the top the list. (Add rossum-electro.com to your email contacts list to ensure you receive emails from us.)

– If the contact information you enter below changes, be sure to let us know so we can contact you when your name comes up. We’ll confirm receipt of your new information.

New Rossum SP-1200 Officially Announced at $3,999.00

"Why did you take this approach with the SP-1200 reissue?" video upload by Rossum Electro-Music

"What are some challenges working with vintage digital technology vs vintage analog designs?" video upload by

via Rossum:

"This is a pre-order for the second lot of SP-1200 reissue units. We fully expect to be able ship the units from the second lot by the end of January 2022. Your payment method will be charged immediately. Limit 2 per customer.

The latest in the SP-12™ family, the Rossum SP-1200® is an authentic reissue of the iconic classic SP-1200 sampling percussion system. Building on the engineering of 2020’s 35th Anniversary SP-1200 Renovation, including study and analysis of many vintage units using modern technology not available during SP-1200’s original production run, the team determined that virtually all original components ought to be used in order to deliver the sound at the very highest standard of precision. E-mu Systems co-founder and original SP-12 and SP-1200 designer Dave Rossum has duplicated the original analog and digital electronics of the landmark 12-bit drum machine sampler as closely as is possible thirty-five years after its debut. Throughout the process of creating the SP-1200 reissue, Dave was delighted that with very few exceptions, authentic components exactly the same as those found in the vintage classic instrument could be used throughout and took great care to maintain the classic SP-12 and SP-1200 circuit board layouts. Inside and out, SP-1200 is faithful to the original operation and preserves the coveted, authentic sound and character of the classic vintage instrument. Through this labor of love, Dave was able to create an instrument that should sound exactly the same even to the most discerning ears.

Changes and enhancements were made where they were compatible with the original design, without compromising the classic vintage sound. Sampling memory has been expanded to the maximum capability of the original sound engine. An all-new memory card storage solution with new functions seamlessly integrated into the operating system allows musicians to conveniently save, rename, and delete files and folders, and supports importing vintage SP-1200 disk images packaged in the popular .HFE format. Also included in every box, a 3.5” “floppy” disk 💾 containing modified software for original vintage SP-1200 units adds a new Set-up Special function allowing users to transfer all sounds and sequences from an original SP-1200 to the Rossum SP-1200 reissue over a standard MIDI cable. Whether using 3.5” disks or the popular floppy drive emulator modification, users of classic SP-1200 units are able to recall and remix their work on the SP-1200 reissue.

"Hi Matrix, The SP2400 render picture is a fake render,if you zoom in on the picture you can see black lanes that goes in all ways. proportions of some trace planes are not possible, like from very large to one point delta. Also traces that goes to the 'big' processor/DSP comes from all sides and not the way like circuits are drawn.

"Beats: SP
Chord: Juno
Bass: Matrix
String arpeggio: Matrix
Audio interface: Echo Audiofire 12

Beats are sequenced with the SP to get that nice swing. The SP is synced to Logic 8 which controls the synths, records the audio and adds some delay effects. This tune is just something I'm still working on."

From nothing to musique concrète with Isla Instruments S2400

video upload by MrMakingsound

Description française ci-dessous.

"Look mum, no sequencer !

Isla Instruments S2400 is a modern sampler inspired by E-MU SP-1200.
Yes, you can create vintage, lofi and dirty Hiphop/House/Techno with it, but you can also compose modern stuff with neat sound quality. Before the review (i'm still working on it), i wanted to show how to perform a musique concrète-ish track without using the sequencer. Nothing is written before, all the sounds are performed live with pads, faders and filters.

S2400 only, with une pincée de OTO Machine BAM at the end, because there is no reverb in the actual firmware. But i hope it will change (This is a message for Brad and Vlad ^_^).

How it works :

Instead of using discrete and short sounds on each track, i like to use very long recording as a library of sounds, textures and ambiances. With the faders help, i can change playhead position, volume and pitch for each track. Pads are used to trigger and re-trigger sounds, filters to make room for frequencies.

As files bigger than 64MB can't be loaded in the S2400 editor, changing playhead position needs to be done blind, but that's part of the fun. You never know what you will trigger next, you need to improvise, and each performance is unique."

Soquelle's Custom Forat Red & Silver E-Mu SP-1200 Samplers

A couple of pics in via Soquelle who has a new release out featuring SP-1200 beats, Prophet VS & SH101. Track embed & details further below.

Note the silver SP-1200 has the new CF card reader.

"Soquelle's first single "Tense" blending smooth vocals with crunchy Sp1200 beats, Prophet VS & SH101

Listen to Soquelle's first single 'Tense', melding low-end club, mid-end smooth & hi-end glitch

The Story
The inspiration for this track is to stop and examine the state of being "tense". To step back for a second from all the pressures around you, the crushing industrial landscapes that may swallow us all, & find that moment of tranquil light lying idle on the other side.

The Technical Aspects
It took us two months in our home studio to craft a unique sound that could capitulate these visions, using old '80s analog equipment, a couple EMU SP-1200's, Sequential Circuits Prophet VS, Roland SH101, a soprano saxophone & unknown DIY methods that we'll never be able to repeat again.

E-Mu SP1200

images via this auction

"The SP-1200 was THE drum machine & sampler combo of legendary status among old school rap and hip hop artists from the eighties and nineties. It is similar to today's Akai MPC samplers - it is a sampler plus drum machine. It has limited sampling specs: 22 kHz and 12-bit resolution. However the dirtiness of that sound is great for hip hop and house music. They say it sounds like "old vinyl"... It features groove quantizing and a disk drive for sample storage. As an upgraded version of the 1985 SP-12, the SP-1200 focused on its coolest feature - sampling. The preset drum sounds of the SP-12 were omitted, leaving room for up to 32 user samples of your own custom sampled and edited drum sounds.

Although this machine was originally released in 1988, E-mu has reissued them again and again due to popular demand. They continued producing them until they ran out of the SSM filter chips they used, around 1998. It was just too legendary to give up as it was THE beat machine for old-school rap and hip hop! Pictured above is the final reissued version in 1997 with the cooler looking all-black case. With the SP-1200 it's easy and fun to grab those sliders and tune or tweak your sampled drum sounds all around!

Specifications
Polyphony - 8 voice
Sampler - 4 2.5 second blocks (10 seconds)
SPECS - 256 KB memory
22KHz 12 bit sampling
Patterns - 100
Songs - 100
Keyboard - 8 Touch Pads
Memory - 32 patches
Control - MIDI, SMPTE"

E-MU SP1200 VINTAGE SEQUENCER SAMPLER DRUM MACHINE SN 019704437

via this auction

Description pulled from wikipedia:

"The SP-1200 can store up to 100 patterns, 100 songs, and has a 5,000-note maximum memory for drum sequences. It also has a mono mix output and eight individual outputs, MIDI in/out/through, SMPTE sync, and a metronome output. There is one button that allows you to select between banks A, B, C, and D, which gives the user easy access to each of the 32 sounds. The front panel contains several LED lights, buttons, and eight volume and pitch faders for each sound in the selected bank. Below each fader is a large button to initialize the sound, or select the sound for editing, and a switch to turn the trigger's velocity sensitivity off or on. The sequencer works in the familiar pattern-style of placing short consecutive sections of samples into a song. The user can easily add swing quantization and tempo changes. The sequencer can sync the tempo to SMPTE, MIDI, or analog clock pulses and is also capable of synchronizing the tempo to a tapping finger with the tap-tempo button.

Unlike the SP12, the SP-1200 does not contain ROM-based samples; all samples are stored in volatile RAM and loaded from floppy disk. The AD/DA converters remain 12 bit, as 16 bit converters were still expensive and found only on high-end gear, such as the contemporary E-Mu Emulator 3 (EIII), which had a list price of over $15,000 USD. Maximum sampling time was doubled from the upgraded SP-12 Turbo, to over 10 seconds, but the maximum single sample was 2.5 seconds. The sample rate was reduced slightly also (from 27.5 kHz to 26.04 kHz) to maximize memory usage. The SP-1200 retains all of the I/O capabilities from the SP12, minus the cassette output and floppy disk I/O"

The Dirty Heartbeat of the Golden Age

Click here for an article on the E-mu SP-1200 on village voice.
"In the summer of 1987, E-mu Systems released the SP-1200, a drum machine and sampler designed for dance-music producers. An update of a previous model known as the SP-12, the souped-up edition allowed for the recording and manipulation of a 10.07-second sample with gritty 12-bit sound quality—now you could craft a complete instrumental on one portable machine."

E-mu SP-1200 Sampler / Drum Machine SN 099302252

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"An undisputed classic of beat production, the SP-1200 rivals the MPC60 as the defining instrument of Hip Hop production. So remarkably in demand, even after becoming technologically outclassed by other sampling instruments with more memory and features, they were in production and/or reissued until E-mu ran out of SSM2044 filter chips in 1998. This one is serial number 099302252, and was manufactured near the end of production, as indicated by the black chassis. This sampling powerhouse is in great shape, loads samples, and sounds fantastic. Ships in a hard shell case, and includes a copy of the manual."

BeatPPL Podcast 70 - Rossum-Electro's Dave Rossum & Marco Alpert

Published on May 16, 2020 BBoy Tech Report

"Dave Rossum & Marco Alpert of Emu Systems & Rossum-Electro joins the podcast for a conversation about the EMU legacy, SP1200, and their current eurorack projects. Livestream scheduled for May 16th, 2020 at Noon pacific.

About Dave...
Starting with his co-founding of E-mu Systems, Dave provided the technological leadership that resulted in what many consider the premier professional modular synthesizer system. The E-mu Modular System combined superlative analog design, innovative use of digital technology, and unparalleled physical construction and reliability.

In the following years, Dave and E-mu turned their attention to affordable professional digital sampling with the Emulator keyboards and racks. The Emulator II in particular established sampling as the leading music technology of its time, becoming a standard fixture in professional studios worldwide and appearing on innumerable hit records and film soundtracks. SP-1200It was followed by the Emax samplers, the legendary SP-12 and SP-1200 sampling drum machines, the Proteus sound modules and the Morpheus Z-Plane Synthesizer.

In addition, Dave also developed and licensed technology that enabled the creation of many iconic synthesizers, including the Oberheim 4-Voice, the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 and, via his design of many of the SSM music ICs, instruments from Korg, Kawai, and many more."
