BugBrand Weevil Module

video upload by BugBrand

"A basic walk-through of the new Weevil module for BugBrand Modular.
1) the individual oscillators, then RingMod1 + Power Starve behaviour
2) processing a static VCO
3) then using a rhythmic gate into the audio input
Support from Penrose plus, off camera, a CVCO & the ever present DDSR.

"Back in the Old-Blues days, I tried to port the Weevil design into the modular format but it was a challenge.. The circuitry of the regular Weevils is really very simple & the chaos comes from circuit-bending (an unconventional approach!) – the difficulty was how to add voltage-control features to this simple circuitry (modular approaches are quite a bit more involved). So while I did a design back then which was enjoyed by bug-users (SYN1 Weevil), I never thought it quite captured the chaotic sonic worlds of the ‘true’ Weevils.

For a few years I put the Weevils to bed, but have recently come back to thinking on them – so, looking again at modular approaches, I’ve come up with something that I feel works things a bit differently and, while it still feels a bit different from more regular/simple Weevils, it offers a whole host of chaos & noise.

See the block diagram!

First off we have the power starvation core – this unfortunately couldn’t viably be voltage-controlled. Turn the Starve dial fully clockwise for regular/full-power usage. When starved, everything goes a bit nuts, everything interacts & we get to much more noise-based areas, though note that all outputs pass through circuitry to ensure they remain ‘full-strength’ (all are 0V to +10V). There is also a Stable switch which adds a little smoothing – it isn’t exactly stable, but it is more-so/different.

There are two voltage-controlled oscillators ranging from c.0.5Hz to 20kHz from the front panel (they can go slower with external negative CV). There are CV inputs with depth controls & polarity/mute switches for each Osc plus a CV Both input which affects both Oscs. The Oscs track 1V/Oct reasonably well, but are not temperature compensated, nor do they have the best high-frequency tracking. The two Oscs interact a little, especially so when starved. Each Osc has an independent banana output + LED indicator.

The basis for Weevils was a simple cymbal noise-source generator which quasi-ring-modulated square waves together for richly (en)harmonic tones. Here we have a first RM combining the two Oscs, followed by a second which mixes RM1 with an external signal which has passed through a drive/squaring circuit so that it matches the Weevil-core (inc. starvation). This audio input is quite level dependent so do play with the Drive control – you can also input gates/clocks/etc. to the input which can generate some interesting behaviours when using Starve. Note that without an input signal, the output of RM2 will appear quiet (ie. it isn’t silent, but it isn’t regular amplitude).

All in all, the Weevil Module is inherently quite chaotic compared with my other module designs – that is, I feel, its strength & interest! Experiment, feed different signals in, feed outputs back into CV inputs, etc."

Ambient modular jam into the Wesaudio Rhea tube compressor

video upload by Sonic Circuitry

"With this 500 series stereo channelstrip, featuring the WesAudio Rhea tube compressor, I’ve got a great sounding chain for recording my modular synth, needing no additional plugins to finalize the sound.

The Hermod+ is sequencing modules by Vostok, with a zlosynth Kaseta adding tape saturation/delay on one of the voices. Then into the Weston Audio mixer, Strymon Starlab adding reverb, and the right output channel goes through the Echo Fix EF-X3 before it hits the 500 series chain."

Note this is the first post to feature zlosynth instruments.

Kaseta is a multi-purpose module inspired by reel-to-reel tape machines. It simulates magnetic hysteresis to provide warm saturation, its four independent delay lines can be used to sculpt rhythms or feedback loops, and it offers wow and flutter control. The module also goes beyond typical tape machine features, with free-moving delays, trigger sequencing, and an internal oscillator.

While the module works perfectly well as a regular delay, its flexible interface can also be wired up to provide a variety of effects, sounds or CV sources. The following list summarizes its main features. To learn more, see the User Manual.

Aluminium panel with high-quality anodized finish
CNC engraved lettering
20 HP, skiff friendly
Delay with 4 reading heads
Tape saturation simulation
Wow and flutter effects
Stereo output
Up to five minutes of recording
Internal oscillator
Trigger sequencer
LEDs visualizing dialed parameters

Seofon Introduction: What Sounds Can It Create?

video upload by Sonic Seed

"Mad Kid Empire's first synth: Seofon - After a year of design and production, the Seofon is finally here.

It produces a sound that sounds like a water droplet, or perhaps the next moment it will be generating a noise as intense as sawing wood.

Seofon

At the heart of the Seofon is a noise generating circuit consisting of seven groups of nodes in the centre, with direct outputs as noise, which are self-wired to form self-oscillations, or can be interfered with by inputting signals to the nodes to generate fixed frequency rhythms.

"Mad Kid Empire's first synth: Seofon - After a year of design and production, the Seofon is finally here.

It produces a sound that sounds like a water droplet, or perhaps the next moment it will be generating a noise as intense as sawing wood.

At the heart of Seofon is an organic noise generation circuit consisting of seven nodes in the centre, which outputs noise directly and generates rhythms by feeding signals to the nodes to interfere with them. Seofon itself provides three sets of pulse oscillators to adjust the pulse width of each set, and positive and negative phase outputs. Different sound events are generated by extracting information from the nodes into the filter. All sounds originate from the interference and extraction of noise signals from the seven sets of nodes. The synthesiser package and circuitry was designed by Mad Kids Empire synthesiser designer xamynot; the painted artwork on the back of the synthesiser was drawn from artist Yu Zhi.

The contacts make it possible for Seofon to be virtuosic, by touching different contacts in combination to quickly generate instant sound events, which generate a series of linked influences like a butterfly effect.

The Seofon lit version is without metal contacts and comes with stereo outputs.
Seofon standard version is with metal contacts, two left and right mono channels and one stereo output."

"Clandestine Projects go by many strange names. Projects which changed the course of history for better or worse. Manhattan, Bluebook, MK Ultra— hell—even Alan Parsons…

PROJECT ANTIDOTE (codename THE MACHINE) is the latest of such world-changing endeavors. But rather than another top-down government control-scheme funded by covert appropriation, the Military, Moonies, the Heritage Foundation or Rand Corp— PROJECT ANTIDOTE is conducted by a grassroots coalition of outsiders far from the eyes & ears of the surveillance-state.

Miles down a random dirt road a working group was assembled from the ranks of OFF!—the Hardcore Punk Supergroup—& Trogotronic’s Subhuman Resistor-Wranglers. Their mission: Design the ANTI-SYSTEM.

While silicon valley oligarchs were squandering unimaginable sums to develop “brain-enhancement implants” at zillion-dollar vivisection labs, PROJECT ANTIDOTE relentlessly refined THE MACHINE at a secret forest shanty dubbed “THE PUNK WORKS”. Success was soon realized when the pathway for organic audio-to-mental frequency-coupling was established, whereby minds are FREED rather than controlled. What’s more THE MACHINE viscerally resonates with only the MOST radical free-radicals to achieve a critical mass of illuminated population no longer subject to THE SYSTEM.

THE MACHINE includes a holistic tuning array of

11 Parameter Knobs
10 Element Light Emitting Array
All-Analog Audio Circuitry
Right vs. Left Hemispherical Design
Endless Audio-to-Brain Setting Possibilities
12v Worldwide Power Supply
Plug & Play for rapid deployment at blistering amplitudes, its immediate effects are clearly notable when the uninitiated strike a peculiar pose with each fore-finger inserted deep into the ear canal. Congratulations: IT’S WORKING!

As a redundant precaution, plans are being subliminally disseminated via unlimited multimedia release. Hidden diagrams are embedded in LP sleeves, Sportswear & Midnight Movie plots only visible in complete darkness. This way if all our efforts fail, the intrepid underground technicians among us can independently construct THE MACHINE in shanties the world over."

BAF 2024: Dogbotic Labs - Synth Building Workshops

video upload by sonicstate

"At Buchla and Friends 2024, Sonic State had the opportunity to chat with Sean from Dogbotic Labs who offer online workshops for electronics, where participants receive a kit of materials and learn how to build their own circuitry over 10 weeks on Zoom. The workshops have attracted participants from all over the world, fostering a sense of community and collaborative learning. Sean, who is a composer and video artist performing under the name Isorhythmics, emphasizes the importance of experimentation and creativity in electronics, highlighting that it's not necessary to fully understand how things work as long as they can produce cool results.

One of the main workshops offered by Dogbotic Labs is the *DIY Synths* workshop, which teaches participants how to build their own basic synthesizer from scratch. Another popular workshop focuses on building a drum machine with a patchable interface. While the designs may seem complex, Sean encourages participants to customize their creations according to their own artistic visions.

Unfortunately, the kits are currently only available for purchase as part of the workshops, but Dogbotic Labs is planning to start selling the kits separately in the future. https://dogbotic.com/"

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #130: ASM Hydrasynth - Song 1

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the first song with the Hydrasynth. It is an 8 voice digital wave morphing synthesizer. It has an advanced wavetable synthesis engine, 3 Oscillators, dual Wave Mutants, and 2 filters that can be configured in series or parallel.

I used for the recording the following FX pedals: Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe, Tasty Chips Electronics Integral, Meris Polymoon and Beetronics Seabee. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated. On the bass track is also a Fairfield Circuitry Roger That, to give it some slight extra brittle.

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)

Melodic Randomness: Chance Delay & Dual RVG (Eurorack Probability & Random CV for Generative Patches)

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Visit AJH Synth @MachinaBristronica (UK) Saturday 30th. Experimentation with using 2 random event & voltage generator modules within a melodic, sequencer-controlled, modular synth performance. Randomness/probability/chance can form the backbone of a generative music patch, but also in more manually controlled situations, and are a great companion for step sequencers.

Here a purely analogue step sequencer is used, with the time variation function of the Dual RVG serving as the master clock, and the Chance Delay adding probability to each step occurring. In the previous video the Chance Delay was randomly passing the gate signals from a sequencer to the synth voice it was controlling, so some steps would be missing. This time the module is placed before the sequencer, so that all steps will occur, in the correct order, but randomly. Since the gates it is receiving is from the master clock, all of the sequencer steps will remain in time with the music.

The Dual RVG also simultaneously produces 2 random control voltages for each clock pulse, and so I'm using one of these to modulate the frequency of the Entropic Doom, which I'm using to generate a simple percussive sound. The new Triple Cross module is also featured here, and cross-fades between 4 pitched drones, forming a melodic chord, but with 2 separate LFOs controlling the cross-fading, so that the mix between the 4 notes/sounds is constantly changing.

2 of the VCOs from the drone sound are passing through the Wave Swarm, creating a buzz of additional sawtooths to thicken their sound. These 2 are heard through the Fixed Filter Bank 914 later on, which creates a more choir-like timbre to accompany the output of the Triple Cross. The Sonic XV is used as both a filter and a wave-folder for much of the melodic sequence, where it is at times accompanied or replaced by the same VCO passing through the Ring SM and then Transistor Ladder Filter into Low Fat VCF.

Come see and hear the modules this weekend at: https://machinabris.wpengine.com

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Future-Retro VECTRA Giveaway

Future-Retro is having a drawing to give a way a VECTRA on Oct 1st.

You can find full details on how to enter on their site here: https://future-retro.com/vectra-giveaway/

"The Vectra is a unique hybrid synthesizer with a flexible architecture that allows many different forms of synthesis to be realized. It’s the best of both worlds… The Vectra utilizes digital oscillators, ring modulators, noise sources, vector mixer, LFO’s, complex envelopes, and modulation routings providing many capabilities that would be very difficult to produce with analog circuitry alone. This allows for accurate tuning, repeatability of complex patches, and patch storage. The Vectra also provides a multi-mode analog filter, VCA, and final output, as these provide the best sonic qualities.
The Vectra includes a powerful and fun sequencer and arpeggiator, with many new capabilities. Although the Vectra is a self contained instrument, MIDI can be used to interface with other devices."

You can find a few demos of the Future-Retro VECTRA in previous posts here.
