New Music Technology Company Drops The Beat Thang

"Beat Kangz Electronics launches portable music production system

Nashville, TN - (July 13, 2009) - In the spirit of hip-hop, Beat Kangz Electronics has developed a new music production system and a virtual software package for music lovers and beat makers.

The Nashville-based independently owned company has created The Beat Thang mobile music production unit and The Beat Thang Virtual software application with a unique set of features designed to fit the needs of the urban music community.

Packed with over 3000 brand new sounds, these products integrate fully functioning Digital FX, a 16-track MIDI sequencer, sampling and waveform editing. Designed with the musician’s ear in mind, the products are loaded with live bass, strings, synthesizers, Latin and African percussion, electric guitar as well as popular chopped and screwed effects.

The Beat ThangFlexible and user-friendly, The Beat Thang touts a sleek, light-weight portable design and a rechargeable lithium ion battery with up to six hours of playing time allowing users to effortlessly move from the studio to the stage. The Beat Thang Virtual software application can be loaded onto a PC or Intel-based Mac.

Crowned as the founders of Beat Kangz Electronics, Luke “Boom BAP” Jackson, Reavis “Rev” Mitchell and Aja “A-J-A” Emmanuel inevitably met as they crossed paths on the music scene. From recording with independent and major artists of every genre to producing promos and jingles for international brands and large networks, the owners of Beat Kangz Electronics wanted to create a line of products that the music community could relate to.

“We asked ourselves what were the things we wished a beat machine could do. As independent artists and producers, we know what it’s like to create on a grassroots level. We wanted to actually make the products we used,” said Emmanuel.

Jackson believes the products can serve producers in all genres of music. "Although our products are mainly influenced by hip-hop, the three of us come from very eclectic musical backgrounds. As musicians, we recognize that hip-hop encompasses many different genres, therefore our products will serve many users,” he said.

During a preview of The Beat Thang at the Winter 2009 National Association of Music Merchants Show (NAMM), the team noticed the demand seemed to be much higher than they had anticipated.

“We’ve gotten such great feedback at NAMM shows. We already knew that the market was being underserved, but our interaction with all the users just confirmed how much of a void there was to be filled,” said Mitchell.

The Beat Thang mobile music production unit and The Beat Thang Virtual software application will be featured at the Summer NAMM convention July 17-19 in Nashville.

The Beat KangzCollectively, the triple threat admits to being techies by nature. Their first design concept, the critically acclaimed Zoom SB-246 Streetboxx released in 2006, has been a trusted favorite of underground and major label artists, producers, and deejays worldwide.

Equally impressed with the Streetboxx was legendary production guru and former Live Nation Recordings head Bob Ezrin. After a meeting with the owners, Ezrin found the revolutionary idea of a mobile music production unit and virtual software application, created by an African American company, and owned by talented musicians to be a movement he could support.

“As musicians, they know what they need to make their music. What they have done with this new product is far more profound than what any technologist can do. And when musicians design an instrument to be responsive to their own artistic and technical needs, you can expect it to be practical as well as innovative,” said Ezrin, co-founder of Nashville-based artist development company Bigger Picture Group and producer of both Jay-Z's 2004 film documentary "Fade To Black” and Pink Floyd’s legendary album The Wall.

“Putting so much horsepower into the hands of young music makers is bound to produce groundbreaking results,” declared Ezrin, who is now a partner in the company.

Additionally, the company enlisted Commissioner Gordon, a music engineer who has mixed for artists like Kanye West, The Roots, 50-Cent and KRS-ONE, to mix the final sounds for the The Playa Thang, a playback application for the iPhone and iPod Touch platforms featuring 20 production ready Beat Kangz beats.

Finishing touches are now in progress for The Playa Thang. Plans to make the application available for download from the Apple iStore are underway.

By July 17, The Beat Thang Virtual software system ($149.00) will be available for purchase on the company’s website and The Beat Thang mobile music production unit ($999.00) will be available for pre-order to ship in October.

Summer NAMM 2012: AIR Music Technology

YouTube Published on Jul 12, 2012 by soundonsoundvideo

"A.I.R. MUSIC TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCES IGNITE SOFTWARE, AN INSPIRED NEW APPROACH TO COMPUTER-BASED MUSIC IDEATION AND CREATION

Ignite is a musician's creative partner, promoting experimentation and making it easier than ever to capture musical ideas.

Cumberland, R.I. (July 11, 2012) – A.I.R. Music Technology, the groundbreaking developers of acclaimed, industry-standard virtual instruments and audio processing tools, introduces Ignite, a new software solution with a revolutionary approach to music creation. A.I.R. will unveil Ignite at Booth 800 at the 2012 Summer NAMM show in Nashville, Tennessee, July 12-14.

Ignite is a discrete, standalone music ideation and creation software built from the ground up to spark creative ideas and enable musicians to build songs in an organic fashion. It's not another DAW with complicated controls or engineering-centric workflow. In fact, it's not a DAW at all.

With Ignite, musicians are set free from the rigid and stale interfaces of the past. Ignite conforms to the user's creative process and represents a fresh way of thinking about music creation—a way that complements and energizes a musician's natural workflow. It's a whole new way of creating, capturing, and sharing musical ideas and compositions, the perfect creative partner for a musician. Ignite helps musicians unlock creative energy and construct songs in an instinctive and satisfying way. Songs can then be exported to a sequencer or DAW if desired.

At the heart of Ignite is its non-linear Arranger, which replaces the traditional timeline and tracks-and lanes format. Just open the software, connect an M-Audio keyboard and start capturing musical ideas. Individual ideas can be snapped together in pairs or groups to intuitively construct entire songs. Ignite's Smart MIDI technology assists in the creation of chords, phrases, patterns, and complex arrangements, and five premium virtual instrument expansions are included. All of Ignite's built-in instruments and included expansions are based on A.I.R.'s professional virtual instruments, which were originally developed for Pro Tools.

“We are very proud to announce Ignite. This is the result of more than a year of research and development, blood, sweat and tears. It is exciting for the whole team to see it come to life,” said Samara Winterfeld, Principal Product Manager, A.I.R. Music Technology. “We're musicians who were never really satisfied with the music-making experience on any DAW, so we built Ignite for ourselves and for musicians everywhere who want to capture and develop their musical ideas in ways that are intuitive and inspiring. This first release introduces key features that are central to the product. We have many more new features in development and look forward to sharing them soon.”

Ignite provides an immediate outlet for natural music creation and ideation—its unique tab interface eliminates distraction, presenting users with all the tools they need for each step of the process and nothing more. Select an instrument, record, edit MIDI in the Piano Roll View, organize and arrange clips and more, all in a clean, inviting interface with straightforward controls and zero clutter.

With Ignite, musical collaboration and sharing are easier than ever. Its Sharing Tab includes direct links to SoundCloud, Facebook, email and more. Ideas can be shared instantly, empowering musicians to craft, collaborate and create songs together, whether they're separated by a few miles or on different continents.

Ignite 1.0 is focused specifically on the keyboardist's workflow. Beginning in Q3 of 2012, all M-Audio keyboard controllers will ship with Ignite included, and other brands in the inMusic family will include Ignite with select products. This initial product release will be followed by a number of scheduled releases designed to address the complete music creation process. These processes span content access, music creation, collaboration, finishing, publishing and live performance for both keyboard-based musicians and those recording audio from analog sources.

Steinberg Adds Support for ELK

You might remember the ELK Music Operating System from this prevoius post. In a nutshell, "ELK allows manufacturers to move away from dedicated chips and use standard off-the-shelf CPUs, with significant improvements in terms of user experience, performance and scalability - combined with unprecedented time-to-market advantages and potential new post-sales revenues from software, content and services for their devices."

It also supported the ability to host JUCE and VsT 2.x and 3.x plugins. That integration, however, was implemented by ELK. With this announcement, Steinberg is hosting the integration.

I asked ELK how this differed from the prior announcement and my contact stated: "Before WE (ELK/MIND Music Labs) were the ones working on integrating VST support in ELK (i.e. making ELK "VST compatible") - potentially with the need of future reworks, patches, etc. and no guarantee of support to future VST evolutions.

Since today, it is Steinberg that by adding ELK-related elements to its standard ensures future-proof full compatibility between VST and ELK."

And: "This means ELK will be the first available embedded platform to officially support all plug-ins developed under VST 3 specifications, allowing manufacturers to offer their customers access to an enormous range of VST instruments and processors, and making it extremely easy for software developers to release VST-based software, sounds and effects on hardware musical instruments."

The following is the official press release on the announcement:

MIND MUSIC LABS AND STEINBERG ANNOUCE ELK INTEGRATION IN JUST RELEASED VST VERSION 3.6.11

With the release of version 3.6.11, Steinberg's Virtual Studio Technology plug-in format will natively support the integration of Mind Music Lab’s ELK operating system, allowing VST-based plug-ins to run seamlessly in ELK-powered musical instruments and audio processors.

October 23, 2018 – Stockholm, Sweden

Today MIND Music Labs announced that version 3.6.11 of Steinberg's VST (Virtual Studio Technology) natively supports ELK integration.

ELK, an OS designed specifically for use in embedded systems such as hardware musical instruments and audio processors, will be the first such platform to officially support all plug-ins developed under VST 3 specification. This will allow embedded hardware manufacturers who develop products with the ELK OS to offer their customers access to an enormous range of VST instruments and processors.

Essentially, ELK's integration with VST will make it extremely easy for software developers to release VST-based software, sounds and effects on Powered by ELK hardware musical instruments - the first of which, DVMark's Smart Multiamp, is scheduled for release in early 2019.

“We were very impressed by the performance and stability that the ELK Music Operating System has to offer. And this is the prominent reason that we decided for it to become the first platform for hardware musical instruments within the VST domain,” commented Yvan Grabit, senior developer and tech lead at Steinberg.

"It is an honor for us to be officially recognized as partners for embedded use by Steinberg. For the past 20 years, VST plug-ins have been the de-facto standards for desktop-produced music, and we are ready to help VST become the standard for smart musical instruments and audio processors as well." said Michele Benincaso, CEO of MIND Music Labs.

XILS-lab Launches StiX by Xils V1.0 Virtual Analogue Multi-Synthesis-Driven Drum Machine Plug-In

StiX by Xils Overview

Published on Mar 19, 2016 xilslab

"GRENOBLE, FRANCE: after almost a year of diligent development, music software specialist XILS-lab is proud to announce availability of V1.0 of StiX by Xils — a virtual analogue and multi-synthesis-driven drum machine with sophisticated sequencer plug-in for Mac (OS X 10.5 and later) and PC (Windows XP, Vista, and 7/8), inspired by a whole host of trailblazing drum machines that have helped make music technology what it is today, all adapted to the modern-day digital paradigm and fast-footed user workflow with ease — as of April 5…

35 years is a veritable lifetime when it comes to music technology. Today’s computer-based music-makers bombarded by staggering software developments on an almost daily basis may mock at the idea of hefty hardware blazing the trail back in the 1980s. But breakthroughs came throughout that genre-defining decade — often at a prohibitive price. Take the wonderful world of drum machines, for instance. Innovative American designer Roger Linn’s revolutionary Linn LM-1 Drum Computer was first to use digital samples of acoustic drums — albeit at 8-bit/28kHz — and also one of the first fully-programmable drum machines to boot. But back in 1981 most musicians could only dream about accessing a $5,000 USD digital drum machine, revolutionary or otherwise!

Only programmability in itself would be a dream come true for many musicians of the time, tied to realistically restrictive constraints when it came to auto-accompaniment budgets. But the technological tide turned in their favour that same year with the timely arrival of the STIX PROGRAMMA ST-305 from (now-long-lost) Italian manufacturer SoundMaster as one of the first affordable analogue drum machines to feature programmable patterns rather than just presets. Proactively, perhaps, the STIX PROGRAMMA ST-305 included individual outputs for several sounds — unlike its main competitor, the breakthrough Boss DR-55, though, similarly, ‘programmability’ was restricted to basic bar-based patterns, which would soon become its downfall. Within a year, Roland’s radical TR-606 Drumatix was a better buy as an affordable analogue drum machine offering a higher number of fully-programmable patterns and, crucially, an ability to chain them together into songs, such was the speed of technological change… before long, the advent of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) and affordable digital drum machines changed everything. Endgame? Paradoxically, an ‘analogue renaissance’ is still being felt (and heard) today — a fact far from lost on XILS-lab CEO Xavier Oudin.

Obviously, times change as, of course, does technology — music and otherwise. Today, then, StiX by Xils takes the best ideas (and subtly-different, yet strangely contemporary-sounding sounds) from the likes of the STIX PROGRAMMA ST-305 and Roland TR-606 Drumatix — and many more notable drum machines besides — and successfully transports them to a virtual analogue and multi-synthesis drum machine plug-in for Mac and PC, pumped up for a truly 21st Century computer-based music-making experience that is second to none.

Central to the StiX by Xils workflow with fast-footed users in mind — and centrally positioned in a GUI that’s as easy on the eye as it is to understand — is its engagingly-expressive XoX Sequencer, boasting a multitude of fanciful features, including a multilane editor with customisable steps per beat; per step division trigger (for fills and stutters); customisable beats per bar; and global swing, as well as a single line editor (for in-depth editing of individual sequencer lines), plus pattern and song modes (for speedy song building).

Building upon traditional analogue drum machine design, several sounds — BD (bass drum), SNARE, HH CL (hi-hat closed), HH OP (hi-hat open), TOM L (tom low), TOM H (tom high), and CRASH — are always accessible — alongside additional user-definable PERC 1 (percussion 1), PERC 2 (percussion 2), and MISC (miscellaneous) ones — via the drum pads bar at the top of that intuitive GUI. There the similarity ends, though, as StiX by Xils takes things to another level entirely as an inspired piece of contemporary software design that leaves the historic hardware from which it took its initial inspiration standing (way back in the early-Eighties)! Fit for today, StiX by Xils comes complete with 10 full-featured synthesisers — one for each sound being hosted by those 10 drum pads, each of which can call upon several sound engines, including virtual analogue (with components closely modelled upon a selection of prestigious and rare analogue synthesisers for percussion and drum sounds with unmatched analogue authenticity) and FM sine oscillators (with wave shaping and a third oscillator that can load samples), as well as easy and advanced synthesis pages. Put it this way: yesteryear’s hardware drum machine users couldn’t have imagined such heightened levels of control in their wildest dreams!

Desirable StiX by Xils features well worth noting in that regard include MIDI output (for controlling virtual instruments or recording MIDI data within a DAW); MIDI learn (with full automation of all synthesis parameters of each drum pad and associated mixer, etc); multi-criteria database (for finding the right preset efficiently as well as creating custom tags); randomise (drum kits, sequences, and full patterns); live control (for chaining patterns, plus muting/un-muting tracks on the fly); multi outputs (with volume, groups, and pan preservation); high-quality effects (including natural-sounding reverb, analogue delay, and analogue phaser, plus per drum crusher and distortion); sample-accurate synchronisation and audio engine (to create the tightest beats imaginable); hundreds of simultaneous modulation targets; and gang mode (to edit sequencer lanes, mixer, and effects sends).

Stacked with 390 exclusive samples — including 15 drum kits sourced by production partner Wave Alchemy from classic drum machines of the past (including Roland’s revered TR- series as well as trailblazing digital dream machines such as the E-mu SP-12 and LinnDrum); 2,000 presets; 120-plus global presets; 720-plus patterns; 700 drum pads; and 60 drum kits, StiX by Xils means more sounds and styles are available to the modern-day discerning (virtual) drum machine user than ever… roll on some truly 21st Century computer-based music-making!

StiX by Xils is available to purchase as a USB eLicenser or iLok (soft or USB iLok dongle) protected plug-in for an introductory (30% discounted) price of €125.00 EUR until April 30, 2016 — rising to €179.00 EUR thereafter — from the XILS-lab web store here: https://www.xils-lab.com/products/StiX-by-Xils.html

StiX by Xils can be directly downloaded as a multi-format (AAX, AU, RTAS, VST), 32- and 64-bit-compatible virtual drum machine plug-in for Mac (OS X 10.5 and later) and Windows (XP, Vista, and 7/8) from here: https://www.xils-lab.com/pages/StiXbyXils_Download.html"

NEW APPS AVAILABLE FOR THE LINE 6 MIDI MOBILIZER

"—Transforming your Apple® iPod touch™, iPhone™ and iPad™ into a complete music production studio—

CALABASAS, Calif.—November 18, 2010—Line 6, Inc. (line6.com), the industry leader in digital modeling technology for music-creation products, is proud to announce a dozen new apps for the MIDI Mobilizer™, the only MIDI interface for Apple iPod touch, iPhone and iPad.

“Developers are doing an amazing job of harnessing the power of the Apple devices and turning them into serious music-making MIDI machines – all made possible by MIDI Mobilizer,” remarked Chris Grigg, Mobile Products Manager at Line 6. “Prepare to be completely amazed at how much you can do with such tiny, affordable gear.”

MIDI Mobilizer is the most simple, compact, and portable Line 6 device yet. It easily connects directly with any Apple iPod touch, iPhone or iPad and coupled with MIDI Memo Recorder (a free app available for download on the Apple App Store), it allows musicians to conveniently play, record, and backup MIDI data any time, anywhere.

Following the announcement earlier this summer of the free MIDI Mobilizer Third Party Developer Program, over 70 app developers around the world are working on new apps that will support MIDI Mobilizer. In addition to MIDI Memo Recorder, there are currently a dozen apps available for MIDI Mobilizer: NanoStudio, NLogSynth Pro, NLog MIDI Synth, Music Studio, Pianist Pro, StepPolyArp, MIDI Surface, Little MIDI Machine, MIDI Live, bs-16i, and S1MIDI Trigger. [brief descriptions on each further below]

NanoStudio, for example, is a techno-styled, full-featured virtual recording studio complete with 16 sample trigger pads, a comprehensive sequencer, a sample editor, a mixer and 10 FX units. Another is NLog Synth PRO, which is a professional virtual analogue synthesizer with 192 factory sounds, powerful synth features, and more. Pianist Pro, an 88-key virtual piano for the iPad, has been highlighted in Apple commercials and recommended by the New York Times, Rolling Stone magazine, and others.

Pianist Pro
"As featured in the latest Apple "iPad is Musical" TV Ad, recommended by The New York Times, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, Rolling Stone Magazine, and played live by legendary band Squeeze on the Jimmy Fallon show (NBC).

Pianist, the ORIGINAL iPhone piano, turns Professional in an all new iPad-only app with photo-realistic graphics and an unbelievable sound. Pianist Pro was the number one music app for the iPad at release and has remained high in the charts ever since."

StepPolyArp
"StepPolyArp is a midi step polyphonic arpeggiator. The arpeggiator does not play any sound itself, it transmits midi notes to a Mac or a PC to be used in combination with any sequencer, virtual instrument (VSTi, Audio Unit) or midi synthesizer.

The arpeggiator can transform chords into sequences of notes played one after the other in several ways. A matrix polyphonic step modulate arpeggiated notes in time and pitch. The main controllers (velocity, modulation, panning, volume, aftertouch, and pitch bend) are also programmable through a step editor. The integrated keyboard automatically adapts to the selected musical scale."

MIDI Surface
"MIDI Surface is a full-featured MIDI control surface for iPhone and iPod touch, brought to you by the minds at Audiofile Engineering (creators of FiRe - Field Recorder, Backline Calc and other essential audio apps). Designed for use with the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer hardware accessory, MIDI Surface allows users to easily create and save their own customized MIDI control surfaces. It delivers seamless touch-screen control of MIDI-enabled instruments such as keyboards, drum machines, software synths and more."

Little MIDI Machine
"Little MIDI Machine is an analog-style MIDI step sequencer app for the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer interface. This app requires you own the hardware Line 6 Mobilizer MIDI interface hardware accessory for full functionality.

Little MIDI Machine gives you the step sequencing power of a hardware analog sequencer on your iPad! Program two independent sequencers that send note and velocity MIDI data out on two MIDI channels to control your hardware synthesizers. LittleMM includes many of your favorite hardware sequencer features such as mute and un-mute notes, skip steps, reverse the sequencer, adjustable clock speed, etc. If you do not have a Line 6 Mobilizer, LittleMM can generate very basic melodic sounds in place of sending MIDI. This will let you play around with the app and try it out, but it is not a feature that will be developed further and is not the primary purpose of the app. LittleMM is intended to be a MIDI sequencer driving external hardware.

With Little Music Machine you can use your Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer interface along with your favorite hardware synth and your iPad to create mind-bending loops and sequences."

MIDI Live
"This application is designed for live performance using the Midi Mobilizer from Line 6. It provides realtime modification of midi file parameters including:

* Song Tempo
* Key Change
* Instrument Assignment
* Song Cue
* Mixing Parameters

It is possible to alter these parameters while the song is playing or save for future playback. Playlists are also supported. Songs can be freely downloaded from the internet or loaded from your laptop.

Note: This application does not make sound on its own, it requires the Midi Mobilizer from Line 6."

bs-16i
"bs-16i is a 16 multi-timbral playback sampler. It supports SoundFont, and can be used for keyboard instrument, MIDI sound module, and MIDI player.

The sampler engine is ported from bs-1 / bs-16, which is developed as professional plug-in for Logic (Audio Units) and Cubase (VST instrument).
Using SoundFont libraries, you can play with your great number of Instruments.
It supports all standard MIDI messages, so it also can be used as a GM (General MIDI) sound module.

As a keyboard instrument, you can play with scalable keyboard, pitch bend wheel, and many control change controllers.

Internal MIDI player supports SMF (Standard MIDI File) format."

S1MIDI Trigger
S1MidiTrigger turns your iPad or iPhone into a customizable touchscreen MIDI controller that can replace hardware devices costing hundreds of dollars. Connect wirelessly to audio workstation applications on the PC or Mac, or use Line 6's MIDI Mobilizer hardware add-on!

You can use the built-in controller screens or design your own, with touch pads (for drums and other instruments), sliders, X-Y pads and more. (Note: This requires a MIDI application -- it does not play music by itself.)

S1MidiTriggger is compatible with the open-source DSMidiWifi server, but for even faster response you can download our free S1 server software for PC or OS X. (A fast wifi connection is recommended.)

Don't worry if you don't have the best musical skills! With S1MidiTrigger, it's very easy to just tap some pads to play simple notes or even complete chords.
