MidiBox 8 Chip SID Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"This is a MidiBox SID synthesizer in fantastic condition and barely used. If you like chip tunes or the old Commodore 64 music, then this is for you. If you are into sampling this unit offers endless possibilities. I believe that it has 8 SID chips on board. I bought this with the intention of sampling it like crazy but life has taken a very different direction for me and I'm selling all my gear..."

Midibox Clockbox

Two shots of Mike's Midibox Clockbox with some updates to the code. You can find more info in the update to this 1x ClockBox, 3x x0xb0x post.

Note in that post I asked if anyone had more info on the ClockBox. It turns out it's a project from uCapps.de/MIDIBox, makers of the MIDIBox SID.

Comments disabled here to keep them on the previous post. I primarily put this one up to let people know the prior post has been updated.

ANALOG SYNTH SID 8580

more images

"This is a hand made Analog Synth with SID 8580 as the sound engine. It has a 2x16 Blue LCD, RED LED power and BLUE & ULTRAVIOLET midi in indicator LED's. There are (6) BIG GREEN ARCADE Buttons to select menu functions. There is also an extra GREEN BIG SID MENU SELECT BUTTON on the side. It is the same function as the small gray one on the front. There are midi in and outs on this unit.

_it has blue, ULTRAVIOLET and red LED's
-this version has artwork on front panel
-All internal wiring is CAT5 and hot glued down at the solder locations to survive a very long lifespan
-the front and back panels are very thick clear and Transparent RED plexiglass.
-12v AC power adapter is included (WALLWART)
-It can be edited via CC midi messaging.

This item was a prototype I had for about a month, that is why it is 'Used'. I was going to keep it for myself because of the Rare 8580 SID chip but i have decided to let it go. The wood is painted C64 case color. The bottom has a few scratch marks on the wood. You can't see them unless you lift the unit up and take a close look.

The difference between the 8580 chip and 6581 is that the 8580 sound more musical and has more clarity. The resonance is also a bit more defined.

Here is the myspace link to here a demo of what it is capable of: It was mixed down in CUBASESX. The demo's here however re from a 6581, i haven't had the time to record the 8580.

All songs are 100% SID only, the first song only has VOCODED INTRO."

Not fully analog. More info on the SID chip here.
More info on MIDIBox here.

Midibox Sammich SID MOS 8580 Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Up for auction is a ready-to-use Sammich SID DIY synthesizer based on the legendary MOS SID (Sound Interface Design) sound chip of the Commodore C64. This is a powerful synth which doesn't only do the usual 8bit chiptune bleeps, but can also produce some pretty fat leads and basses.

For more info on the Sammich SID project visit:
http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=sammichsid

The unit on offer here was carefully built from one of Wilba's original kits and comes complete with two original MOS8580 SID chips installed. To my ears at least, the 8580 with its improved filter is better suited for use in a synthesizer than the 6581. But of course, you could also install a pair of 6581, if you prefer those.

This unit is fully working and in decent cosmetic condition. The only major cosmetic blemish is on the back panel (see second picture), where you can see some smeared white paint from a semi-successful attempt to fill in the engraved inscription with a white permament marker. Not very pretty, alghough it doesn't affect the unit's functionality. To make up for it, I'm including a EU power supply in this auction. :) "

B.H.Z. Quad Sid

This was one spotted on ricardo.ch, by swissdoc. According to the listing it's a:

"C64 SID Synthesizer 4x SID Chip

1x Midi In
1x Midi Out
4x Audio Out Mono je SID Chip 1 Audio Out"

If anyone knows more about this one or B.H.Z let us know! This is the first B.H.Z. post on the site.

Curious if this is a one off Midibox based SID.

Update: confirmed this is Midibox based. Now checking on what the B.H.Z. stands for. Maybe the initials of the maker.

Hawkeye - Mnemonic Mantra (C64 SID vs Ensoniq ESQ-1)

Published on Jan 28, 2016 Maelstroem3

"A late night live session with a pair of C64 SIDs (8580) and their spiritual successor, the Ensoniq ESQ-1/ESQ-m. Both synthesis engines feature three oscillators per voice, the ESQ-1 offers more waveforms, improved envelopes and modulation possibilities and an increased audio quality.

Bob Yannes (the creator of the SID and founder of Ensoniq) once stated, that he (given he would have had the time and resources) would have liked to put the ESQ1 architecture instead of the SID sound architecture into the C64. In a parallel universe, this has probably happened, hehe :-).

Used tech:
* MB6582 - DIY SID synthesizer by midibox.org with 8 SID chips, fully MIDI controlled for the chip arpeggios
* Ensoniq ESQ-m - rack mounted ESQ-1 for the lead
* Moog Little Phatty for the bassline
* Alesis Andromeda for the poly synth pad
* EMU E-SI 2000/4000 for the drums
* MBSEQ V4 - DIY MIDI sequencer for live sequencing this track. Pattern changes, filter sweeps and evelope adjustments are performed in realtime :-)
* no DAW was used or abused, directly recorded to a Tascam WAV recorder, only slight compression added afterwards :)

Thanks for watching and listening, hope you enjoyed it! :-)
Many greets,
Hawkeye/Maelstroem Records"

MIDIbox SEQ V4 Teaser #2

YouTube via ucapps

"MIDIbox SEQ V4 has reached beta state, let's celebrate this with a new demo!

[0:00] The electronic harp is played by Sculpture (part of Logic Audio) - a Physical Modelling Synth which I really like!
[0:00] MBSEQV4 plays the 16-step sequence with a new "step progression" feature: on each 4 step interval, the step is triggered twice. In addition, a customized groove template is applied on the velocity to accent the notes based on the master measure. This results into a more complex sequence which varies on each beat, but still sounds nice and not too random!
[0:01] to understand the "step progression" feature watch the GP LEDs - they are stopping each 4th step
[0:11] an Echo Fx is added with 64T delay. Note value is increased by +3 and forced to scale
[0:17] an additional VST synth is added which gets use of the new "step progression" feature as well
[0:21] Echo Fx: temporary increased to 6 repeats with +3 Note Value and +150% delay on each echo - let's scrub the harp!
[0:31] adding drums
[0:41] adding more synth lines, again with "step progression" to vary the sequence
[1:04] adding a chord sequence played by MIDIbox SID V2 (a typical arpeggio patch is used)
[1:48] probably you haven't noticed it due to the bad video quality, but I switched to another pattern which plays the electronic harp at C-3 on each step - the groove template is still enabled (boring?)
[2:05] now something completely different: a LFO is applied on the harp sequence with sine waveform and an interval of 4 steps. Force-to-Scale is enabled
[2:07] the LFO also sends a CC to Sculpture to vary the timbre.
[2:13] adding Echo Fx (1 repeat, 64ppqn delay, +150% tick) to this "modulated sequence"
[2:19] changing LFO waveform to Triangle
[2:31] changing LFO waveform to Sawtooth
[2:36] changing Echo Fx to 6 repeats
[2:46] slowly changing LFO the period to 16 steps (enjoy the change-over effects!)
[2:52] slowly changing LFO reset to 16 steps (enjoy the change-over effects!)
[3:00] changing LFO waveform to Sine, play drums again
[3:14] changing LFO waveform to Triangle
[3:21] changing CC offset of LFO
[3:33] unmuting the other instruments
[3:56] switching back to original sequence (my favourite moment ;-)
[4:16] muting/unmuting the toms...
[4:30] slowly muting the tracks
[4:40] thanks for listening! :-)

This track is the result of a rainy saturday afternoon."

TherapSID - more ASID and DeepSID support | Playback and remix C64 SID tunes

video upload by tubesockor

"Here is a new demo with further enhancements to my development version of the ASID support for Twisted Electrons TherapSID. This enables playback of Commodore 64 SID files on the TherapSID hardware and also adds extensive remix capabilities.

Also being demoed is in-development ASID support for DeepSID - the browser-based SID player and database. When released, this means that not only TherapSID but also SidStation, Midibox and Commodore 64 (Station64) owners can playback C64 SID tunes straight from the browser.

Commodore 64 SID Songs played in the video:
0:00 Fjoss V1.1 - Moppe (2002)
1:06 Green Beret - Martin Galway (1986)
3:27 Ballad for Jeff - Shogoon (2023)"

ASID player using real C64 (Ode to 64 by Søren Lund) Station64

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"This is not my music. Though this video needs to be on the internet.

lot of this stuff is so niche or lost it just doesn't exist on youtube. it's not really what I usually do on this channel but if not me who else is going to do it.

So what's going on here. The Software on the Laptop is from Elektron's download page for the SID station. it is an ASID player. Basically you load a sid file into it and it sends that data via midi cables (not midi protocol)

so the Sidstation..Midibox sid. (I think Hardsid) can support ASID. probably others. DJ Indikator wanted a way for a real commodore 64 to be compatible with ASID so in recent years they made Station64 which is a full midi native c64 software but it amazing supports ASID. http://www.djindikator.net/c64/

The Elektron software doesn't know what it is sending to. So the c64 is playing it on its 6581r4ar into my mixer. into the little M8 tracker which is being an audio interface for my phone so this video has direct audio.

I was so happy to get this working. had to share. Also more people that hear Ode to 64 the better."

MB-6582 PCB Orders 2

Remember the MB-6582?

via nebula:
"Hey guess what? You linked a while back to Wilba's amazing MIDIbox SID. Well he has just taken delivery on 100 PCB's (sorry, all spoken for) which are about to be unleashed on the MIDIBox community. Something tells me we're going to start hearing a lot more modern SID music soon. Thought you might want to share this one. I have one on order and will be sharing my experiences building the thing at http://nebulasdomain.blogspot.com"

Custom MIDIbox V1 SID Synth C64 w 6581 Blue Lantern

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

This is the one in the video posted here.

"Up for sale is a MIDIbox V1 and it uses the 6581 SID chip. I originally got it from Blue Lantern (the modular guys) some years back. More info on the V1 is available at: http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_sid_v1.html

Cosmetically, it is in great condition. I love the way it looks with acryllic case, blue display, and green arcade buttons.

It is fully functional. All buttons work, all parameters adjust, midi is functional, sounds great, and display is bright. Never went super deep in the programming but you can control the parameters with midi. It uses the built in filter of the sid. It has an 1/4” output for the sid and a 1/4" input to access the filter on the chip. There is Midi In, Out, and Thru, but I always forget which is which as they are not labeled!"

TK and Hawkeye - Air Time

YouTube Published on Jun 18, 2012 by ucapps

"A jam session that I had together with Peter aka. Hawkeye (sitting in the background) in his studio - see also his YouTube channel for more great music: http://www.youtube.com/user/Maelstroem3 !

At 1:16, Peter added an impressive FPV recording made with his model airplane flying at the south border of "Starnberger See", a lake between Munich/Germany and the Alps.

Used instruments:

Hawkeye: directly played an Access Virus C

TK: used his MIDIbox SEQ V4 and BLM16x16+X to play an Elektron Machinedrum for the percussions, Moog Little Phatty for the bass, MIDIbox SID for additional basslines, Yamaha FSR1 for the pad sounds.

We started a bit uncoordinated, but found our style after 1..2 minutes.
We hope that you enjoy the video anyhow! ;-)"
