Stylo-101 (Stylophone+SH-101) for iOS

Another one from the makers of Advanced Mobile Drummer posted earlier today.

"I-phone 5 friendly! What do you get if you cross a Stylophone with the famous Roland SH-101? Well We have circuit-bent a virtual Stylophone and added Roland SH-101 modifications. You can create wacky and eerie sounds to meaty bass lines. As well as the Stylophone sound, you now have an extra oscillator driving a sawtooth wave with filter and resonance from the SH-101. You can adjust the mixer for each oscillator and the LFO can control oscillators and amp. We have increased the LFO speed and depth of the pitch modulation. We have also added an SH-101 style sequencer for creating bass lines or arpeggios. It is still monophonic but the notes will continue to decay if you release your finger before playing another key. You can also play over the top of the sequence while its playing.

Roland SH-101 Plug-In/Out Synthesizer

Published on Dec 17, 2015 Synth Anatomy

"The Roland SH-101 Synthesizer is a legendary monophonic Synthesizer with a basic synthesis structure. With the ACB Technology, Roland emulates the old analog hardware Synthesizer and bring it as plug-in/out Synthesizer.

This video demonstrate the sound quality of this new emulation of the SH-101 Synthesizer. In my eyes, the SH-101 Plug-In/Out Synthesizer is a high quality SH-101 Emulation and offers a good sound quality. With optional effects, it goes behind the classic analog hardware and gives more possibilities to the plug-in/out versions.

With the color schemes. you can personalise your own SH-101 Plugin. Only negative point is that the emulation doesn't have this 100% analog sounding punch but is very near on the original SH-101. For people who need the SH-101 Sound, it would be a perfect Synthesizer for you.

More Informations about SH-101 Plug-In/Out Synthesizer, you can find here: http://www.roland.com/products/sh-101..."

"The TR-08 brings the look, sound, and feel of the original 808 — with stunning accuracy — to the Roland Boutique format. From the instantly-recognizable red-orange-yellow-white markings, the shape of the sequencer buttons, switches and knobs are details that have been painstakingly reproduced to match the iconic recreation of sounds. Along with the aesthetic touches, the TR-08 contains new features like 16 sub-steps for fast rolls, independent trigger out track, compression/gain/tune for instruments and a selectable modified “long decay” bass drum for more boom and resonance.

Roland System-1 SH-101 PLUG-OUT Details Including Software Versions For Windows and Mac

Details are in. What's interesting is it appears you can run the emulations as software synths on your PC. There are Red, Blue and the classic Gray versions of the SH-101. The download is free to System-1 owners. Only 1 note poly like the originals though. I wish they had an option for polyphony. It is software after all.

Roland Aira's on eBay

"The SH-101 PLUG-OUT Software Synthesizer is a complete reproduction of the iconic SH-101 – right down to the fine details and odd quirks that make it one of the most popular classic synthesizers of all time. Based on Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, it not only reproduces the SH-101’s legendary sounds, but faithfully recreates the very behavior of its analog circuitry – all with a level of authenticity that could only come from the company that created the original.

Capturing the Original
The now legendary SH-101 was a monophonic synthesizer launched by Roland in 1982. In contrast to the many complex synthesizers available at the time, the SH-101 quickly became popular for its characteristic tone and simple one-VCO > one-VCF > one-VCA > one-LFO structure. A legion of artists found it quick to program and adept at bright edgy tones and exciting sound effects. Thirty years later, the SH-101’s hallmark sounds continue to be sought after by electronic artists the world over.

- Total authenticity through face-to-face consultation with the original designers and relentless research beyond the original schematics
- Meticulously recreated oscillator and filter behavior - hallmarks of the SH-101 sound
- Authentic behaviors including the unique interaction between low pass filter and envelope controls
- Faithfully reproduces the unstable fluctuations that resulted from quirks in the SH-101’s circuitry
- Classic SH-101 synth sounds - bass, lead, noise, and sound effects.
- Software layout features standard gray model, as well as red and blue models originally sold as limited editions.

SH Evolved
Go beyond the original hardware with enhanced tone shaping options and seamless DAW integration via AU and VSTi plugin interfaces. Full PLUG-OUT support means you can use SYSTEM-1 as a dedicated controller and even use the SH-101 without a computer. The freedom of hardware. The flexibility of software. The sound of a legend.

- Two envelope sections allow different settings for VCF and VCA while maintaining the option of classic SH-101 envelope behavior.
- Reverb, chorus, delay and crusher effects that were not included in the original.
- Run as many instances as your computer can handle.
- Use SYSTEM-1 as a dedicated USB keyboard controller with lighted knobs and sliders that show only available parameters.
- PLUG-OUT with SYSTEM-1 lets you take an authentic SH-101 wherever you go, from mobile production to live performance.
- Transfer sounds between SYSTEM-1 and SH-101 with PLUG-OUT
- Supports Macintosh and Windows, and AU and VSTi formats.

* SH-101 PLUG-OUT Software Synthesizer (not available for sale) is available free of charge to SYSTEM-1 owners. Please use the coupon included in your product package to download free of charge."

"How to program the Roland SH-101. Understand Analogue Synthesis from the ground up. No previous experience necessary. http://www.facebook.com/scififunk for more.

The Roland SH-101 has stood the test of time. Why? Because it is straight forward to program. All the synths attributes can be changed instantly and in real time without stepping through menus.

In part 1 of the guide I play a few little demos before getting stuck into the VCA (Voltage controlled Amplifier), and the many ways it can interact with the rest of the synth."

Part 2: "In this section of the Roland SH-101 Programming Tutorial I look at the Modulator and its 4 basic waveforms. After that I go on to the VCO and we have some fun! http://www.scififunk.com for more."

Part 3: "In part 3 of this Roland SH-101 Tutorial I look at the performance aspects of this mono synth. http://www.facebook.com/scififunk

Roland SH-2 Vintage Analog Monophonic Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

Tons more pics at the auction while up. Note the mini tune knobs.
"The Roland SH-2 is a monophonic analog synthesizer that comes with two individual voltage controlled oscillators and a third sub-bass oscillator, making the SH-2 sound very warm, fat and gritty, especially when the oscillators are detuned. Unlike the SH-101 and its singular oscillator, the SH-2 can sound both "vintage" and modern depending on how the knobs and faders are set, while the SH-101 has a distinctly clean sound in comparison. The SH-2 excels at bass in an organic way that the SH-101 could never compete with, and it performs brilliantly on leads, being upfront and in your face without being harsh.

However, if you're into that vintage 70's sound, and love the sound of raw, dirty bass on vinyl or tape, but the classic Moog sound is a bit too tame for you, then the SH-2 is probably what you're looking for. The SH-2 is capable of being deep and subby, warm and airy, or raw and dirty all at the twist of a knob or a flick of a fader.

The SH-2's filter can also be made to self oscillate, just like the SH-101, which gives you that deep hard hitting subby kick, but of the two, I personally prefer the self-oscillation of the SH-2, its dirtier, slightly sweeter and has more chunk, while the SH-101's is more straightforward and to the point. Both will give you a thunderous bowel moving bass kick, but which you prefer ill have more to do with your personal musical inclinations.

For those of you who may be trying to decide between the SH-2 or the SH-101, the sound you're after is more important than the differences in their features. While the SH-101's sequencer and arppegiator is incredibly useful and just stupid amounts of fun both live and in studio, the SH-2 simply sounds fatter, like you've lifted a sample off of a 70's record, warm and raw and full of character. In comparison, the SH-101 can sound plastic and "digital". They both do things that the other cant, but despite being part of the same line, and despite what certain websites may say, their sounds are very different."

Future Retro Desktop Synth with 11 OSC Models, Pro Sound Design Tools, Hands-On Workflow, and Multitimbral Pattern Sequencer

Los Angeles, CA, February 23, 2023 — Roland announces the SH-4d Synthesizer, a powerful new desktop instrument focused on synthesis and sound design. With 11 OSC Models and a hands-on panel filled with knobs, buttons and sliders, the SH-4d fuels on-the-spot creation and endless sonic discoveries. It also features a multitimbral sequencer with four synth parts and a customizable rhythm part, allowing users to compose intricate patterns with motion recording, extensive effects and more. Equally suited for studio, stage and traveling, the SH-4d is a fun and versatile instrument that will appeal to both modern electronic music creators and synth collectors everywhere.

Fifty years ago, Roland launched its first synthesizer, the groundbreaking SH-1000. The SH name has represented the company’s core synthesizer instruments ever since, merging innovative new technologies with tactile interfaces for quickly designing sounds in the moment. The SH-4d opens the next chapter in the long-running series, offering Roland’s latest analog modeling advancements and a deep-yet-inviting panel that catalyzes creativity and rewards exploration at every turn.

Detroit techno legend Carl Craig was so impressed with the SH-4d that he agreed to be the face of the launch video, delivering a spirited performance featuring new music composed solely on the unit. "That machine is a little monster,” he said after spending just a short time with the SH-4d. “So many options to not only shape sound but to shape the musical composition too."

Eleven OSC Models offer diverse sound-crafting possibilities, from vintage analog tones with SH-4d, SH-3D, Chord, Ring and Sync Models to cutting-edge digital textures with Cross FM, Wavetable and Drawing Models. Influential voices from Roland’s historic past include SH-101 and JUNO-106 Models and a PCM Model with a large selection of sample-based sounds. The SH-4d also features a flexible drum synthesizer with rich tone-shaping capabilities for creating custom kits from scratch.

The SH-4d puts everything creators need for pro sound design at their fingertips, with 32 knobs, four sliders and a massive array of multi-function buttons. The LCD, sliders and buttons automatically reconfigure their functions to follow the selected mode, eliminating menu-dive roadblocks that slow the creative flow. Dedicated Filter, Amp and LFO sections are always ready to shape any tone or pattern. And with the powerful Matrix section, users can create an even wider range of sounds by routing the output of the LFO or envelope generator to parameters in a Model.

Among its many tricks, the SH-4d features built-in motion sensors that allow the user to pick up the synth and adjust sounds with physical movements. D-Motion mode provides X/Y control for two parameters, while the unique Visual Arpeggio shapes note patterns via fun interactive displays.

The SH-4d sequencer is always a button press away, ready to transform sound ideas into compact loops or extended compositions. Up to 60 notes of total polyphony provide ample resources to develop complete musical ideas in the box. There’s also a versatile selection of renowned Roland effects to frost, finesse, rough up or mangle tones and patterns.

The SH-4d runs on a standard USB-C phone charger or AA batteries for up to four hours. There’s a two-plus octave button keyboard for self-contained composition, plus MIDI I/O for use as a sound module and controller in an expanded hardware setup. The SH-4d also functions as a USB-C audio/MIDI interface with 12 discrete audio channels for computer music production.

"The 101-VCO has been re-tooled in 12HP! Version 2 continues its authentic realization of the Roland SH-101 Oscillator adapted to Eurorack: that lovely Sub-Octave Generator, that snowy Noise Generator, an integrated Mixer section to bring all the waves together.

Now in revision 2: Improved tuning stability using power rail voltage references. Simplified tuning via coarse/fine tune knobs. Individual waveform outputs without need for any expander module.

101-VCO expands the original SH-101 features to reveal more potential of the 3340 chip: Triangle wave and exponential FM. And 2 flavors of Linear FM: Lo Range to find those vibrato sweet spots, and Hi Range for full-on Linear FM madness. Expand the palette of original sounds using an external CV signal for Pulse Width Modulation that is summed against the initial Pulse Width amount. While the initial PW amount can go right up to the edge of vanishing, PWM can take the Width right down to 0% up to 100% for complete cancellation.

Great care was taken to keep the 101-VCO fully analog circuit as close to the original as possible. Featuring an Alfa AS3340 re-issue chip at the core of the design, surrounded by eight 20mm slide pot controls. With the conventional coarse/fine tuning knobs it will provide full audio range, whether using the v/oct input or not.

Every 101-VCO is meticulously hand-crafted in limited quantities, not mass-produced, and ready to rock your modular world. Includes 16-pin-to-10-pin power connector cable.

Coarse Tune Knob | Initial oscillator frequency

Fine Tune Knob | Initial oscillator frequency, +/-6 semitones range

FM Slider | Amount that an external signal will modulate the frequency

FM TYPE Switch | LO for vibrato, HI/EXP for more dramatic frequency modulation

PULSE WIDTH Slider | initial Pulse Width amount

PULSE WIDTH MODULATION Slider | The amount that an external signal will affect pulse width

SOURCE MIXER Sliders | Adjusts the amplitude amount of each waveform going to the MIX output

SUB-OCTAVE Switch | Select between -1 octave Square, -2 octave Squrare, -2 octave Narrow Pulse

V/Oct Jack | Pitch Initial Frequency input for connecting keyboard controllers or sequencers

FM Jack | Plug in external signals to modulate Pitch here, such as LFO or envelopes

PWM Jack | Plug in external signals to modulate the Pulse Width here, again LFOs are typical

Individual Waveform Output Jacks | These jacks always output their buffered, DC-coupled signals regardless of Source Mixer settings

Mix Output Jack | This is the combined waveform output of the Source Mixer

TUNE Trimmer (on the back) | Affects the initial oscillator frequency

SCALE Trimmer (on the back) | Affects the v/oct tracking of the oscillator"

All is hand and by ear played .This is a very "light" cover ! I recorded 10 audio tracks with Presonus Studio One, but without automation and I have to add 2 tracks for noises with the Roland SH-101.
I only use Rythmus (by ElektroStudio), Alesis Fusion 8 HD, Roland SH-101, Electro-Harmonix Small Stone (Phaser) and Memory Boy (Tape Delay).
I'm beginner, and not a musician, so ... sorry for bad hand playing and tempo not respected sometimes !

Superbooth 2023: DinSync - RE-101 Keyboard Synthesizer Based on the Roland SH-101

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Paul from DinSync at Superbooth 2023 about their new product, the RE-101, which is a replica of the Roland SH-101. The RE-101 is built from parts that are 100% compatible with the original SH-101 board. Paul mentioned that they have made a replica of the original SEM VCO, which was used in the original Roland machine. They are also working with Analog Renaissance, the premier experts on the 3109 circuit, to create a chip that is indistinguishable from the original. This chip is especially brilliant in the distortion of the resonance, which is what sets it apart from other clones in the market. DinSync's unique selling point is that they want to make a machine that is as authentic as possible to the original and becomes legacy spare parts.

DinSync's RE-101 is the perfect solution for customers that haven't had spare parts for over 30 years. Service centers have been shut down over the past 10 years, making it impossible to get service for an old vintage Japanese machine. Paul said that the filter on the RE-101 is so integral to the SH-101 sound, as it produces the classic slightly distorted resonance. The SH-101 was Paul's first synth when he was a young lad, so this product is a real labor of love. The RE-101 will be available as a kit in the future, so customers can build a brand new machine or repair their vintage machine.

Price: TBC. More info:

Roland SH-101 and RS-09 videos by Dovinia

Analog Impressions #006

"This sound sketch comprises an unusually somber Roland SH-101 and a roll of tape with a little stream and early morning bird song. The delay effect is provided by a Revox A77 tape machine."

Analog Impressions #004

"An abysmal , monotonous piece largely dominated by a wide array of Electro Harmonix effects. The synths used are a Roland RS-09 Organ/Strings and an SH-101 running through EHX Deluxe Memory Man, Polychorus, Frequency Analyzer, Deluxe Electric Mistress and Small Stone."

Roland SH 101 and RS 09 with Korg minipops SR 120

"Here's a little improvisation on my SH-101 and a newly arrived RS-09 and Korg minipops SR-120.
It's just a little piece to show you a complete, 100% analog setup which is relatively cheap and very compact. The SH-101 is running through a Deluxe Memory Man analog delay and the RS-09 is running through a Small Stone phaser."

Roland SH-101 SH101 Analog Synthesizer (1983) sound demo | Synth HQ DEMO & TUTORIAL

Published on Apr 11, 2020 Andy Whitmore

"This synth for me has been the biggest surprise. I don’t use it much as I have so many 'superior' synths – but in fact it blew me away. The sound is awesome – top quality – classic – such an easy synth to program & sounds great in a finished mix.

Vintage synth demo by Andy Whitmore, Roland SH-101 Analog Synthesizer from the year 1983 The SH-101 is a very nice synth with a great analog sound. The sound is deep and powerful. The SH-101 is perfect for very nice bass and lead sounds. The internal step-sequencer is pure fun.

Andy Whitmore started life as a top session keyboard player playing on over 50 hit records before turning his hand to music production. He went on to produce 14 top ten hits. He is a pro when it comes to synthesizers, and here explores the Roland SH-101 as part of a brand new series.

One of the most iconic synthesizers ever, Andy’s experience with this Roland classic dates back to the mid-‘90s, and he discusses the basics in his exploration of what makes the SH-101 so great."
