ROLAND CR-78 - HQ DEMO vintage drum machine 1978

YouTube via AnalogAudio1

"The Roland CR-78 came out 1978 and was the first programmable drumbox with a microprocessor. The sounds are analog. 4 own rhythms are programmable, the other are presets. The CR-78 allows to combine 2 rhythms. Also you can cancel BASSDRUM, SNARE, CYMBAL, COWBELL / CLAVES. A little mixer allows adding GUIRO, CYMBAL and METAL BEAT.

The CR-78 was used by Phil Collins (in the air tonight), Roxy Music (jealous guy), Visage (fade to grey), OKAY (education), and many others.

Int the second half of the film you see the CR-78 synchronized with a Sequential Circuits TOM."

BTW, if you have an iPhone check out FunkBox. Prior post including video here. You can find it on iTunes here.

Linn LM-1

via this auction. via Rod.

click image for the full size shots.

"Up for auction is the famous Linn LM-1, serial #373, considered by many to be one of the best drum machines ever made. Only 500 were made and this is one of the later, more stable versions with removable/cleanable button caps (older models had buttons that could not be disassembled and had to be replaced if they went bad) and shuffle LED's (a must). If you're looking to get the Prince sound (or the Human League, or Gary Numan, or Visage, or John Carpenter sound), this is the machine you want. Samples don't do it justice and can't replicate it (I know, I've tried). This one has been extensively and professionally modified with sync input/output jacks (syncs up perfectly MIDI via trigger input), alternate sounds that can be toggled on/off (original LM-1 woody Claptrap clap/regular clap, 4 toms, 4 congas, or clave/Prince sidestick). In addition, all tuning pots have been moved to the front of the machine for easy access (replacing the useless left/right/center panning toggles - original hardware is included in case the user wishes to revert back to the way it was originally - but why you'd want to do this is beyond me because it really opens up the machine and allows for realtime drum tuning mid-sequence). Ideally you'll want to run each drum sound from it's individual output through a sub-mixer for optimum panning/EQ."

Custom Creamware Odyssey

via AndyR1960 in this electro-music.com thread. See the thread for more images.
"I've recently been commissioned by Dave Formula of Magazine/Visage to build a controller for his Proddy ASB (Magazine have reformed for a couple of gigs here in the UK, and unfortunately Dave couldn't risk taking his Mk1 Oddy on the road). Lucky for me that a mutual friend of ours spotted one of my modulars, and suggested to him that I may be able to do the job...

The keyboard and midi PCB's were taken from a CME M-Key (nice semi-weighted keyboard, but comes with a terribly flimsy and almost, but not quite entirely, useless joystick!) The joystick was replaced with 3 Wheels - two of which, plus two foot pedals, are programmable. Although I have just found a bug which prevents normal control of one of the foot pedals - GRRRRR!!!!

Any problems... Well, quite a few along the way, the hinging mechanism was a bit of a pain, but ended up using a couple of "Side hanging Window friction hinges". Tolexing was fun - though being stuck in a room for 3 days sniffing glue is not advisable : )" via zamise

Ex Howard Devoto & Dave Formula's Roland Paraphonic 505 Up for Auction?

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the listing: "Here we have a Roland RS505 Paraphonic Analogue Synthesiser dating from 1979, originally belonging to Howard Devoto, front man of the band Magazine. It then became the property of Magazine keyboard player, Dave Formula who used it in the band and later went on to use it on the first and second Visage albums.

I bought this off Dave in 2006 and he very kindly signed (large signature) one of the wooden end cheeks in thick gold sharpie pen. Im not posting the pic of the signature for fear of replication but i promise you, you wont be disappointed. I have played it a few times and it sounds wonderful and lush. Please check Youtube for examples. Due to lack of space, ive had it in safe dry storage for a few years and recently noticed that at some point the small Ensemble rocker lever must have unscrewed and I cant locate it so you would have to try and find a replacement switch.

Overall in pretty good shape for age.Built like a tank. No major scratches and no dents."

eBook published by the The Seventh Wave Festival of Electronic Music

"In November of 2016 the inaugural ‘The Seventh Wave Festival of Electronic Music’ took place across four days and across three venues. A numbering system was used as a statement of intent - there is the intention that this will continue. It will grow, it will develop.. this is the start of something.

The stellar ‘live’ line-up included highly influential ambient industrialists :zoviet*france:, revered ‘Kraut-rock’ and electronica collective Gnod, Ex-Kraftwerk member Wolfgang Flür (responsible for inventing the group's electric drums used throughout the 1970’s), DJ Rusty Egan of Visage fame (put simply, without Rusty Egan there would be no Steve Strange) and Richard Barbieri (currently with Porcupine Tree but he cut his teeth as the highly respected synth player for new wave pioneers Japan in the 1980’s).

One of the highlights of the 'first' festival was an all-day conference with keynote speeches from Wolfgang Flür (Ex-Kraftwerk), Andy McCluskey (of multi-million selling synth pop exponents OMD) and DJ Rusty Egan (whose Blitz Club started the New Romantic movement).

Between 2016 and 2022, The Seventh Wave Festival of Electronic Music has worked with Thomas Dolby, Martyn Ware, Fiat Lux, Tim Bowness, Ulrich Schnauss, Thorsten Quaeschning, Banco de Gaia, Test Dept, The Black Dog, Ultramarine and many, many more.. the details of this unique musical experience which traverses the inner and outer reaches of electronic music have been documented in an eBook running to a total of 249 pages.

For a mere £7.99 you not only get the eBook but have the option to access a companion publication ('Sounds of The Seventh Wave' : Music, Video and Audio from the Festival) for 'free'

Full details of both publications can be found here:

Don Juan Dracula - Live Roserock 2005

YouTube via donjuandracula (click for more videos).

Featuring a Korg MicroKorg and a little red keytar. Anyone know what the keytar is? The audio quality isn't the best but you should get an idea of song. BTW, there is another reason why I am posting this. The band's manager, Shane Chisholm, contacted me about doing an interview with the band. As this site is about synths, I'm keeping the questions focused on synths. I also asked him about opening up the questions to all of you, the readers of Matrixsynth, and he said go for it. So.. If you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comments. Why do I have a funny feeling about this... You can find more info on Don Juan Dracula (more shots and better audio) on their official website and their myspace page.

Update: Some of their influences: "These band we really love and come to mind right now:
omd, pet shop boys, depeche mode, devo, duran duran, a-ha, soft cell, erasure, the cure, human league, the faint, vhs or beta, visage, ultravox, freezepop, every moves a picture, peaches, fischerspooner, ladytron, gary numan, miss kittin, stereo total, chicks on speed, jeans team, and so on...."

Update: Shane is offering a free copy of the album for download to the first 20 people that want it. If you want it, shoot me an email: matrixsynth[at]hotmail.com.

Sydney Fringe Festival and Under the Blue Moon Events

"You’ve never seen the Enmore Theatre like this – Sydney Fringe Festival Event

Electro aficionados & vintage synth geeks get a taste of the real thing, live without a laptop in sight.

Long time collectors of analogue equipment Steve Jones and Ryan Spinoglio have teamed up with Carolyn Shine to re-create some of electronic music’s classics under the moniker ‘Studio Serpentine’ on stage at the Enmore Theatre on September 11 2010.

Some of electronic music’s most innovative scores like Vangelis’ Blade Runner and Delia Derbyshire’s Dr Who theme will oscillate between electro-pop classics like Fade to Grey by Visage and Studio Serpentine’s own music.

Priceless pieces of analogue studio heaven will be assembled to showcase the trio’s beloved equipment and give the audience an opportunity to experience electronica history live.

Yamaha CS-80, Prophet 5s, Jupiter 8s, PPG Wave 2, Space echos, and practically the entire back catalogue of Roland drum machines, a vintage Korg Vocoder and the legendary MS-20 will be stacked up with a couple of ARP Odyssey MKIIs, a Space Modular and a Theremin among other things. If that all sounds like another language - it kinda is.

This is a rare opportunity to experience the evolving language of electronic music from its classic origins.

Steve Jones is a prominent recording engineer and keyboard programmer who has worked on many platinum award-winning albums in Australia. He has worked as a keyboard technician for touring artists Kylie Minogue, INXS and Burt Bacharach and is by all regards, a certified synth geek.

Ryan Spinoglio is a musician and avid vintage synth collector, bordering on compulsive. His tracks, under alias, have been released through Ear Pimp and Clan Analogue and you can find him at http://www.myspace.com/electrofetish

Carolyn Shine is a composer, keyboardist and performer. Her recently released single Monsoon Rain featuring Chris Ball that was featured on ABC’s Australian Story is out now on iTunes.

The trio will perform as part of the annual Lunarmorph parade, a celebration of alternative creativity and fashion.

In partnership with the Sydney Fringe Festival the annual Under the Blue Moon Festival, Lunarmorph will be held at the iconic Enmore Theatre in Newtown on Saturday September 11.

Tickets are available through Ticketek and Enmore Theatre.

ROLAND CR-78 Analog Rhythm Box 1978 | HD DEMO

Published on Nov 22, 2015 AnalogAudio1

"(c) 2015 by AnalogAudio1

The Roland CR-78 is a programmable analog rhythm box. Two rhythms can run on the same time. There are 34 preset rhythms and 4 memories for own patterns.

It has a very characteristic, outstanding analog sound. It was used by many artists: Phil Collins (In The Air Tonight), Brian Ferry (Jealous Guy), Visage (Fade To Grey), Blondie (Heart Of Glas), Gary Numan, OMD, Ultravox, and others.

I played the Roland CR-78 with a small amout of ambience from a Lexicon MPX-500. In the intro I played the CR-78 through a Korg SDD-3000 delay."

Also, I improved the previous DX7 take, replacing it with the JP8000.

MiMa feat. Visage - Fade To Grey

video by mima14031985

"Here's my cover of this famous and immortal 80ies piece of music. As my habit, all the song is done by ear all by myself, keyboard parts all played by hands and drum track built with ModPlug Tracker. Then I muted the parts which I wanted to play on synths. Unfortunately the vocal part is missing, but this allows you to sing along the music if you want :-)"

David Bowie - Ashes to ashes

YouTube via marychild.

The question as to what synths were used for the end of Bowie's Ashes to Ashes came up on this VSE thread. The below was uncovered. I'm curious if this is actually in reference to the main line that runs through the song. Note Steve Strange of Visage (who also included Midge Ure and Billy Currie of Ultravox fame) is the left most extra of four when they first appear.

via Marching Pig on the VSE thread:
"Wiki has this to say:
'Perhaps Bowie's most sophisticated sonic work to date, its choir-like textures were created by Chuck Hammer with four multi-tracked guitar synthesizers, each playing opposing chord inversions; this was underpinned by Bowie's dead-pan, chanted background voices.'

Though, I've also read that they recorded it, and made 4 copies on tape; 2 were played "right side up", one backwards, and 2 were played with the "wrong/bottom side" up, again, with one of these backwards. Though, just thinking about that makes me think it's just plain wrong.

the page on Chuck Hammer, it says this:
"In March 1980, Hammer recorded guitar-synth tracks for David Bowie on the album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), including multiple textures across "Ashes to Ashes", 'Teenage Wildlife' and 'Up the Hill Backwards", all of which marked the earliest use of guitar-synth in Bowie's catalogue. The actual instruments utilized on these tracks included a Roland GR-500 with an Eventide Harmonizer. Textural tracks such as those on 'Ashes to Ashes' exhibited a multi-layered, approach, to recording and composing with the guitar.'"

YouTube Uploaded by CelemonySoftware on May 24, 2011
