"Fenix 2, Fenix XL Rumours:
After we stopped with producing the Fenix we hear rumours about the successor of the Fenix. We want to try to give an answer at these rumours.

1- Will there a Fenix 2/3 and or Fenix XL. The answer is: We don't know. It is no problem to design these units, but producing these will cost a lot of time and storage space, and these we don't have. Actually we have already proto pcb's of new modules ready. So i think the change for a successor is 50%.

2- The successor will be an add-on for the fenix. Maybe but also maybe not.

3- The Fenix XL will be available only for Fenix owners. The answer is NO. If we came with new units, it will be available for everybody but in a very limited edition. We hope to make a decision before half 2009."

Oberheim OB-12

via this auction

"The OB12 designed to recreate and emulate the classic sounds and tone of the original Oberheim analog filters. The OB-12 is a 12 voice synth with 4-part modelling synthesis. Loads of real-time knobs (22), sliders (24), and buttons (33) with a traditional layout give you fast hands-on access and control of most parameters. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Happy Turkey Day everyone. I hope it is a good one. I now present you with...

The one and only Turkey Synth.

Pictured here is the Harmonic Generator.
"Created by Isac Zal, the Harmonic Generator is a new experimental electronic instrument. It consists of five main components:
* 64 piano strings on the outside of the device are chromatically tuned to 32 notes.
* 32 corresponding motors with bristle paint brushes beating the strings at controlled speeds
* a homemade keyboard, played like a piano, controls motors.
* 12 pick-ups that focus on one octave of strings
* a transducer at the end of the instrument that feeds back the sound of the pick-ups into the large resonance hull"

Paper Sculpture: In a Quiet Corner of Sussex

KORG MS20 Paper Sculpture

You can find the full flickr set by gardenque here.

You might remember this one in the making here.

via gardenque:
"Korg MS20
When I used one of these synths back in 1983, we had to make sure that if we ever got a good sound, we had to record it there and then because we would never be able to reproduce it at a later time. Many years later, after it had been “resting” in a loft for a while, it was professionally refurbished. The guy that repaired it said that he didn’t know how we’d managed to use it at all because the two VCOs were so completely out of tune/out of synch. Mystery solved!

I decided to do a paper sculpture of the synth at 75% of the actual size. The second part of the paper sculpture will involve a vacuum cleaner! Anybody curious enough to
see the final piece should check back on Flickr over the next month or so.

Many thanks to Matrixsynth for putting up so many photographs of the MS20: they proved to be an invaluable source of reference material."

Vermona Perfourmer & DRM1 - acidic

YouTube via coldhandmurr
"This was going good earlier in the week, but I think I tired of it or something cause when I finally got around to filming it, I'd lost the spark. The recording sounds like crud, too, on account of the camera's mic. Anyhow, I'm posting it because I like the Perfourmer patches, and I think they show off the tasty filters. Also was trying a nice trick on the 01v where you can gang a bunch of sliders together to another.. Since I don't use 13/14 and 15/16 when recording, I used them to gang some channels together. It's pretty neat -- if you set the ganging when the 15/16 slider is at 6db (full on) for instance, the other (motorized) faders in the gang will fade from their current location to -INFdb and back to their max when you fade any of the gang up and down. That little experiment cost me some flexibility though since any member controls the others, so I'll probably have to work on that. Excuses, excuses.... Onward to the video... "

"Quick sketch as this image was in my head for WEEKS and I needed to put this down.

Comic rendition of Alessandro Cortini and his Buchla.

Better one is in the works, as this was first drawn without a clear idea what the hell a Buchla looked like exactly ;)

Also pretty sure hugging a Buchla is not as cuddly as this :P ow."

Train of thought

Train of thought from Hans-Jörg Scheffler on Vimeo.
"Footage was taken looking outside the window from the Shinkanze on the way from Hamamatsu to Tokyo by my good friend Tommy Snyder.
I manipulated the raw footage in V-Track and composed the soundtrack with the new Omnisphere Softsynth from Spectrasonics for all instruments including the drums and vocals.
The vocals are a sample of a british boys choir singing the words Agnus Dei.
I totally deconstructed the syllables in Omnisphere to create a new texture."

Make Noise Quad Multi-Mode Gates

http://makenoisemusic.com/
see this post for a video
"A huge riff on the original Buchla 292 Quad Lo Pass Gate, including a Mix Out and containing no fewer than 8 vactrols! The QMMG offers the additional features of High Pass Gate mode, Voltage Controlled Feedback, Direct Coupling (for processing of Control Voltages) and Normalizations so that multiple channels may easily be used together to create Bandpass Gates, steeper HP or LP Gates or even something like a traditional Synthesizer Voice Architecture.

The voltage controlled feedback is routed differently in each mode.
In VCA mode it is routed to provide slightly non-linear GAIN. Daisy chain multiple channels for voltage controlled clipping. In BOTH Mode the feedback is routed to provide DAMPING of the ringing vactrols. The effect of adding feedback in BOTH mode is not unlike placing your hand upon the head of a drum, while striking, thus allowing the user to control how much the Vactrols ring. In the LP and HP modes, the feedback is routed to provide a highly unstable, non-linear resonance, which at higher settings, will clip asymmetrically. The filter is slippery and smooth at low resonance settings, but it cuts like a choir of daggers at high resonance settings.

The benefit of Direct Coupling is that a channel of the QMMG could be used to attenuate or amplify an incoming CV before applying to another channel. The mixing section is set-up so that inserting a plug at the output socket of any given channel removes that channel from the mix, therefore you could use one half of the QMMG for voltage controlled mixing of CVs to apply to the other half being utilized for signal processing.

This module is 24HP and consumes 60mA worth of current. The price is TBD.

Available soon from Analogue Haven."

ANALOG SYNTH MIDI CONVERTER

via this auction via the forum.
"Here is a cheap solution if you want to add midi to your Analog Synth. It is in 1volt/octave format which makes this compatible with alot of stuff out there. By default it is set on Midi Channel 1, but there is a dip switch to activate a different midi channel if you wanted to. The actual PCB was CNC professionally manufactured, so it is highly reliable. The panel is Lexan and the box is wood. A 12v AC wallwart adapter is included with this auction.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE UNIT IS SIMPLE IT ONLY UNDERSTANDS: NOTE OFF/ON, and VELOCITY.

THESE ARE THE OUTPUTS
(1) PITCH 1v/oct OUT
(1) GATE rated at 5v OUTPUT
(1) VELOCITY ACCENT rated at 5v OUTPUT (HINT**) you can run this to a filter CV pot and dial in the amount of "bright" you want when you slam those Keys!

This is the way I calibrated the unit: Note -C3 puts out 0v, -C2=1v,-C1=2v,C0=3v,etc
THERE IS A VERY BIG RANGE, SO YOU CAN PLAY OFF AN 88-key controller.

There is a RED Led that lights up when ever you play a midi note.
There is a Yellow Led to let you know the power is on.
It runs off 12v AC, the wall adapter is included."

Sound on Sound Buchla 200e Review Online

you can find the review here.

"Despite the success of Hollywood, some icons never cross the Atlantic successfully from West to East. Say 'Babe Ruth' to the average Brit, and you'll conjure an image of a small girl too young to play ball games. Likewise, say 'Don Buchla' in the UK, and you'll probably be asked whether he was a character in The Godfather. Strangely, that description is not as far from the truth as you might imagine. In the USA, there are three 'godfathers' of synthesis: Alan Pearlman, Bob Moog, and — largely unknown in the Auld Country — Donald Buchla.

Buchla was a contemporary of Moog, and like Dr Robert, he produced his first synthesizers in the 1960s. He continued to do so throughout the '70s and '80s (see the box on the history of Buchla & Associates overleaf), but the commercial acclaim and recognition afforded to Moog eluded Buchla, and he concentrated on controllers in the '90s. By the early years of this century, he had slipped into the backwaters of the music industry, but in 2002, he decided to reinvent his most successful synthesizer, the Series 200 from the early '70s, bringing it up to date while retaining as much backwards compatibility as possible. Three years later, the result has arrived. It's a feature-packed synthesizer with a staggeringly huge price tag (see the final page of this article). It's the Buchla 200e." Note the printed review was from 2005.

Update via Wavedform in the comments: "The SOS review seems like Gordon Reid really wanted to review a different system, and not the system as it was.

The Keyboard review was a little more even-handed, I thought."

Saxxy Voice-Controlled Synth

via this auction

"Saxxy is a voice-controlled synthesizer shaped like a mini sax, I guess.
You sing/hum/scream into the mic at one end and Saxxy spits out tuba, clarinet, or sax sounds that track the pitch of your voice. You can also shift any of the sounds 2 octaves up or down.

This is a surprisingly fun little device that can actually sound quite cool, and it's great as a non-keyboard approach to sound generation. The tuba sound pitched down an octave does some cool bass too.

Takes 4 AA batteries and has a 1/8" headphone output."

snip:
"With all of the transistors in, this phase of assembly is complete and the board is ready to wash. In its kits, Synth Tech divides board stuffing and assembly into two phases: all of the parts that can tolerate water immersion are installed first, using an organic acid-based solder. This solder does a good job of removing oxidation from pins and board traces, but it must be washed after soldering to remove the acid flux. After the final wash, the remaining components are installed using a "no-clean" solder that doesn't have to be washed, but requires more care in soldering. The board, ready for wash"
