Samples at Do My Eyes Look Scary?

The Sosnowski Synthesizer

"The Sosnowski Synthesizer is an analog-style software music synthesizer. The download includes both a standalone player version and a VST version for use within suitable hosts. 128 onboard sounds are included, with additional sounds in external files. The instrument is specifically designed to be equally at home as both a "performance synth" and in studio audio, sequencer, and notation work environments.

With a simple, clear, easy-to-use and well-organized layout and sensible architecture, the Sosnowski Synthesizer is ideal for newcomers to the art; yet, with its rich feature set and thorough controllability, even seasoned professionals will find it an attractive and inexpensive addition to their resources.

The Sosnowski Synthesizer generates sound with four separate oscillators. Each individual oscillator includes selection for sine, triangle, sawtooth and square waveforms; plus a selection for a noise oscillator with its own adjustable frequency trap. The oscillator outputs are processed through a multiform filter with its own envelope and modified by dual independent multi-waveform, fully adjustable LFO's (low frequency oscillators).

A final envelope shapes the sound before proceeding to the sound treatment section. Onboard sound treatment includes stereo chorus, reverb, echo, pan/x (automated dual-constant cross-panning), and transposition; all of which are fully controllable from the interface.

Additional features include an onboard velocity-capable keyboard; MIDI channel, program change enable, volume enable, and pan enable switching; an onboard 'scope and parametric equalizer; and a capable preset manager for onboard sounds, plus an easy file system for saving and loading custom sounds."

Hartmann Neuron

via this auction

"I updated the sound sets up to Soundset 3 - there is a further download on line which I didn't do as I was happy with the sounds of V3 - Soundset 3 disks included along with spare controller knobs

As an instrument it is very hard to describe the range of sounds and control it offers - it is immense and can give you modeled real sounds to unimaginable complicated evolving rhythms and pads. The Neuron has full surround capability - see pic of in/out panels - it is in my opinion the best synthesiser ever made for creating unexpected and unique sounds as well as some truly stunning models of other instruments The Wurltzer is just amazing!

I did not get into making my own sound 'models' - the software is still downloadable and there are several dedicated user sites to share and download sounds.

VINTAGE USSR SOVIET ANALOG SYNTHESIZER POLIVOKS

via this auction

samples at ruskeys.net
auction description:
"Polivoks had been produced since 1982 by Formanta electronic factory (one of the biggest at the time); it was sold exclusively in the USSR. Polivoks has its own particular electronic parts, reliable keyboard (49 notes F to E) made in magnetically controlled contacts; synthesis modules consist of independent boards, which is convenient for maintenance. The synthesizer has 2-voices polyphony; each oscillator works with a keyboard note independently; two types of filters - bandpass/lowpass and external input for cutoff control. In addition, Polivoks is housed in an original body of uncommon design with handy controls. Being closed with a cover, the synthesizer turns into a strong aluminum case.

Polivoks is the portable electronic musical synthesizer which is designed for playing different musical compositions of any genre. It is also intended for creating some musical effects in cinema and play scoring, in studio.
There are 4 octaves on the keyboard. The inclined desk is divided into the following functional sections: Modulator, Generator #1, Generator #2, Mixer and Amplifier. They give one a possibility to synthesize a broad spectrum of sounds and to change sounding at any time.
There are 3 internal audible signal sources in the instrument: to broad-ranged of the Generators with changed form of oscillations and a noise generator for creating a non-musical sounds such as wind, surf, whine, etc.
Possibility to connect an external audible signal sources to the synthesizer is provided for (e.g. guitars, electropianos and electroorgans). Sounds of different external sources are combined separatly in the mixer in any ratio. There is a filter in the synthesizer with cutoff frequency control and resonance to change colour of timbre of audilble signal over a wide range.

Polivoks is the most popular vintage Russian synthesizer all over the world. It has inimitable peculiar sound and very powerful aggressive filters outperforming the famous Minimoog! A fat, lush and very analogue sound is achieved through instability and thanks to unique architecture of the Soviet-era components; in addition, highly reliable military technologies were applied in the process of production. The synthesizer may be used for hard electronic music, or for soft ambient/old school projects and for modelling various effects as well.

Non Objective Variable Noesis

YouTube via JeffreyPlaide
"An exercise in random and improvised structures, this musical piece explores alternate textures and combinations. Using the TS-404 software synthesizer, various short improvised melody lines were created with multiple step sequences and doubled with stereo echo, flanging and chorus effects. The improvised simple lines were looped to produce combinational polyrhythms. The bassline was created on a Korg R3 synthesizer. The composition concludes with randomised textures and heavy reverberation ending with a slowed down version of the original melody. The piece is to be appreciated on an intellectual level as the direction of the music is based on structure rather than harmony, creating unusual rhythms. The visuals are from a variety of expressive television sources superimposed together with colour channel mixing effects to create a psychedelic effect. Overlayed with this are modulated geometric animations to create visual rhythms."

Roland Jupiter-8 with Kenton MIDI

via this auction

"Vintage Roland Jupiter 8 with RETRO-FITTED (KENTON) Midi input/output/thru. The Jupiter-8 is an 8-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer. Each voice features two VCOs with cross-modulation and sync, pulse-width modulation, a non-resonant high-pass filter, a resonant Low-pass filter with 2-pole (12 dB/octave) and 4-pole (24 dB/octave) settings, an LFO with variable waveforms and routings, and two envelope generators (one invertible). Noteworthy performance features include adjustable portamento, a hold function for making sound design easier, a versatile arpeggiator with DIN-sync and external analog clock input connectivity, assignable pitch-bender, instrument layer and split modes, robust load and save functionality for its 64-patch memory, built-in XLR outputs, and—in addition to legato and polyphonic modes—the Jupiter-8 includes a powerful unison mode. A Z80 CPU was used for managing storage of patches, scanning the keyboard, display, and buttons, port handling, and taking care of the auto-tune function among other things. The VCOs were discrete. The VCF was based on the Roland IR3109 IC (also used in the Jupiter 6, MKS-80 rev 4, Juno 6/60, JX-3p respective filter circuits). The VCA was the BA662. The envelopes were hardware generated by the Roland IR3R01 chip (also in the Juno 6/60), and are much faster than software generated ones in the subsequently introduced Jupiter-6 and MKS-80 'Super Jupiter'."

via Lewellen:
"I was getting a little tired of all of those tree-hugging musical apps for the iPhone like Pocket Guitar and Ocarina. Plus, who isn't tired of Tap-Tap-Tapping? Come on! I figured it was time for someone to step up and create something truly awesome- so I built a guitar out of Frogs.

It's very simple to use:
• pluck, strike, or strum the frogs
• stretch the frogs with the rope and pegs to change pitch
• ignore the flies -- they are just for decorations
- and be careful how you treat those frogs or things might get messy

You can actually play chords and stuff with multi-touch although the fingerings are inverted from a standard bass guitar. My home-made video shows you a basic song."

KORG X-911 Analog Synthesizer

via this auction

"The X-911 crams a lot of cool features into a small box. It is impressive as an effects processor, a pitch to voltage converter, a guitar synth, or a CV-controlled expander that can be sequenced or played from another synth. You can mix footages and waveforms for some pretty complex timbres. It tracks better than a lot of other guitar synths from the era, but one still has to play the guitar very deliberately and clearly to make it work best.

Here is a video, sequencing an X-911 from Korg's SQ-10 and triggering it with the audio from the KR-55 drummachine. The video shows the X-911's envelope filtering capabilities on the drum machine; it also demonstrates the X-911 as a stand-alone synth module."

"Affordable 4 note polyphonic filterbank synthesizer with build-in granulator and distortion effects, step-sequencer and note randomizer. Small and compact in size with a great sound. The headphone output and the step-sequencer makes it ideal to express your musical ideas everywhere, and store them in 128 memory locations."

Gotharman's Deformer
"It's a granular effects processor. It's a polyphonic filterbank synthesizer. It's a MIDI note randomizer. It's an analogue style 2-track MIDI sequencer. It's the first machine in the world (I think), that can do REALTIME TIMESTRETCH ON A LIVE INPUT AUDIO SIGNAL. Add to this a granulator that cut's the input audio signal up in fragments, and lets you move these fragments around with the 16 step pots to rearrange beats and others in realtime. Use the two fully programmable filterbanks to tweak the sound further. Or create complete synth-patches by combining the internal polyphonic oscillator section with one or both of the filterbanks. Create two note and controller sequences and run them thru the note randomizer to create enddless non-mechanical variations. Store your arrangement in one of the 512 program locations for instant recall. That's the Deformer!"

This synthesizer features an LFO, filter, plus pseudo granular synthesis and a special 'destroy' mode which chews up the signal. Intended for experimentation, great for generating new rhythms.

This is the first piece of software completed by Peter Smith, so it will certainly be subject to fixes and modification in the future.

midisynced analogue 8 step sequencer with atmel tiny2313

YouTube via stereoping
"DIY-Microcontrolled sequencer is driven by an electribe and sends gate/cv1/cv2 to diy analogue synth. Starting with forward, 16-th note. The gate switches on top have 3 states: gate, off and gate&glide. Setting to the latter causes the note to be oprtamentoed. With the glidetimepot, the porta-rate can be adjusted. In middle of video the mode is set to random, later to 8th-notes and even later laststep is set to 3."

avr stepsequencer - advance by note

"A feature i like most on analag sequencers is step-advancing by note, means the sequencer advances one step when it gets a note/trigger. This enables you to let it shuffle or make special rhytmic patterns."

"Nice sequence with variations just by altering gatetime."

mc909 as hardwarecontroller for parametertweaking korg dw8000

YouTube via stereoping

"I made little converterbox with a Atmel tiny2313 which translates midi controllerdata of the mc909 into Midi-System Exclusive-Data to change parameters in a korg dw8000 in realtime. This way, the mc909 is misused as a hardwareprogrammer. Most DW8000 parameters are implemented, not all though. Video shows live-parametertweaking. The wizard also maps data of midichannel 7 onto channel 8 to overcome the problem that the mc909-tracks cannot send on other channel as the default. I also made a box for the Kawai K3m. See other videos."

MC909 used as hardwareprogrammer for Kawai K3m - realtime performance

"The Kawai K3 and the Korg DW8000 are lovely hybrid-synths. But they arequite shitty to program cause of their lack of knobs. I made a little box which houses a microcontroller running a little selfwritten software. The wizard translates standard-midicontrollers (sent from e.g. the mc909) into manufactor-specific system-exclusive-mididata to tweak synth-parameters in realtime. Video shows a little knobfiddling on the Kawai K3. You hear the K3, the mc909 is just the hardwareprogrammer for it. It's not a fake, It's just midi :)"

MC909 Mididata converter - how it works

"little, bad video of what the midiwizard does, which can be plugged between MC909 and DW8000 or K3m to tweak parameters in realtime on these cool underestimated synths."
