Another great Synth T-Shirt from The Dole Shirt. If you like more subdued shirts, this is a good one. The quality is top. Be sure to check out their other Ts. Click the pics for some close-ups. This one is mine and I love it. This just might be my favorite so far.

"The electronic instrument's value is chiefly as a novelty. With greater attention on the part of the engineer to the needs of the musician, the day may not be too remote when the electronic instrument may take its place... as a versatile, powerful, and expressive instrument."

Yay! NR Album Boot Camp is off to a super-hyped-up, nerds-on-fire start. This week, we started a new song-- focusing mainly on sound design and beat programming.

Here's glimpse #1 into what's going on in the lab.

PS: At 0:36, m.0 and I say the same word ("ambience") at the same exact time. I think our brains have officially melded."

Modded Synare S3X Drum Synthesizer

via this auction

"This has to be absolutely one-of-a-kind: A 1980's vintage Synare S3X Drum Synthesizer, modified to accept input from an external audio source. The trouble is, it doesn't work...

If you're not familiar with the S3X, it's pretty cool, when it works. It's an upgrade of the orginal, somewhat legendary Synare 3 (PS 3), a dual-oscillator analog synthesizer that's triggered by drum hits. Knobs on the side provide easy tweaking and routing of the oscillators, the filter, and the VCA. There's lot's of information available from the Google on the Synare S3X and some nice demos to be found on YouTube. The big improvements of the S3X over the PS3 are fourfold:

The S3X uses an external AC adapter instead of two internal 9-volt batteries.
There's an external voltage out so multiple drums can be chained together and powered by one AC adapter
The S3X has 5 adjustable presets.
The S3X can be triggered by a Synare Sequencer, which was sort of an early proto-midi type controller box.

On top of all that, the S3X being auctioned here has an additional input labeled "EXT MIC" and a switch to toggle between "PAD" and "MIC". It's a pretty ingenious mod, actually, insofar as the Synares use a small speaker under the drum pad to supply an audio source to the synth controls..."

KORG DS-10 PLUS: 'The Entrance Hall' By Anthony Seeha

"An original song that I wrote myself.
To be honest, this song took me a really long time to create. In the end, it turned out to be WAY better than I expected. It's creepy, majestic, and mysterious all at the same time. Please enjoy!! =)

*Throughout the song making process, I didn't really pay attention to the volume of the song. I was more focused on getting the right sound. That explains the quietness. x_x

The community at DS10Forum.com usually puts together a worldwide compilation from time to time. I was fortunate enough to be involved in this project.

Circuitbenders FRONTLINE DDS20 DELAY

via Circuitbenders where you'll find additional details and other bends. You can also find them on eBay.

"This is a fairly strange unit before you even start to circuit bend it. It seems to be an 8-bit digital delay offering either a maximum of 1 second of delay time, or 2 seconds at what appears to be half the bandwidth, although we’re not 100% certain of any of this. Whatever it is it sounds gloriously lo-fi before you even start to mod it...

Check out the demos below to hear what this thing can do. The first demo Is the result of overdriving the input with a drum machine. At around 1:21 in the unit is switched to 100% wet mix.
The second demo is mainly self generated sounds using the extended regeration/feedback range. The third demo is some random guitar noodling with a clean guitar processed with the switches, and the final demo is a vocal looped with the sample and hold buttons, and then mangled with the mods."

Native Instruments Announces KOMPLETE 8 and KOMPLETE 8 ULTIMATE

"Berlin, August 1st, 2011 – Native Instruments today announced new versions of its studio-standard software bundle. While KOMPLETE 8 has been further expanded to include 27 individual products at an unchanged price, the new KOMPLETE 8 ULTIMATE for the first time combines the full arsenal of Native Instruments' KOMPLETE Instruments and Effects range at the same substantial discount, with 50 individual products conveniently provided on a dedicated external hard drive.

Further expanding its versatile sonic arsenal, the new KOMPLETE 8 includes the latest KONTAKT 5 and GUITAR RIG 5 versions, and adds the charismatic WEST AFRICA percussion instrument. It also incorporates the versatile new STUDIO DRUMMER drum production instrument and the upcoming TRANSIENT MASTER dynamic processing effect. Furthermore, KOMPLETE 8 includes over 1,300 additional presets for ABSYNTH, FM8 and MASSIVE, derived from several acclaimed soundpacks previously available as individual products.

The new KOMPLETE 8 ULTIMATE includes the full content of the regular KOMPLETE 8 bundle and much more, combining the full range of all currently available KOMPLETE Instruments and Effects on a dedicated USB 2.0 hard drive. The resulting collection comprises 50 individual products with over 13,000 sounds and 240 GB of sample content, at an effective discount of over 80% compared to the individual prices. The hard drive enables a fast and convenient installation process, and also constitutes a compact and robust backup medium for the software.

Both new KOMPLETE versions are optimized for Native Instruments' groove production system MASCHINE, offering direct browser integration with attribute-based preset search as well as convenient automatic parameter mapping for the rotary knobs on the hardware controller.

KOMPLETE 8 will be available in September 2011 for a suggested retail price of $559 / 499 EUR, with an update for owners of previous KOMPLETE versions available for $229 / 199 EUR.

Native Instruments Announces KONTAKT 5

"Berlin, August 1st, 2011 – Native Instruments today announced KONTAKT 5, the next generation of its leading software sampler. The new version offers profoundly enhanced sound shaping through a host of new high-quality filters and studio-grade effect algorithms, superior time-stretching, vintage sampling modes, and more. Further accommodating its role as the central sample library platform on the market, KONTAKT 5 also introduces two major new features for advanced instrument design.

In a further major expansion of its unrivaled sound shaping capabilities, KONTAKT 5 introduces a completely new suite of high-quality filters, developed by the creative mastermind behind the acclaimed MASSIVE synthesizer. Ranging from classic analog-style ladder and state-variable models to modern formant filters, some of the 37 new filters also employ the unique new "Adaptive Resonance" concept, which automatically manages the filter characteristics to prevent unpleasant sonic artifacts from excessive resonance peaks. At the same time, the superior new "TimeMachine Pro" time-stretching algorithm in KONTAKT 5 enables unprecedented sound quality for harmonic solo instruments and similar demanding source material.

The comprehensive effect assortment in KONTAKT has been extended with several key additions that focus on studio-style sound processing. The new "Solid G-EQ" and "Solid Bus Comp" algorithms – derived from the upcoming SOLID MIX SERIES – enable studio-grade equalization and compression, while the separately available TRANSIENT DESIGNER has been integrated into the effect arsenal of KONTAKT in its original form. Additionally, a new analog-modeled Tape Saturator can add natural compression and subtle organic overdrive, while the acclaimed vintage sampling modes from Native Instruments' groove-production system MASCHINE have been integrated into the feature set of KONTAKT 5 as well to provide additional flavors of charismatic "vintage dirt".

For ambitious sound designers and professional sample instrument creators, KONTAKT 5 introduces both a powerful new "instrument bus" system as well as KSP-based MIDI file support. While the 16 internal stereo busses with their separate insert chains open up greatly increased routing flexibility, the MIDI file functions in the Kontakt Script Processor enable the creation of advanced types of KONTAKT-based instruments with versatile integrated MIDI playback features, as demonstrated in the upcoming separate KONTAKT-based STUDIO DRUMMER instrument.

On top of its acclaimed 43 GB factory library with its eight separate instrument collections, KONTAKT 5 also includes a free download of the new KONTAKT-based RETRO MACHINES MK2 instrument, which offers an assortment of highly sought-after classic synthesizers complete with vintage-style arpeggiator and chord player, and also takes advantage of the new analog-type filter models.

KONTAKT 5 will be available in September 2011 for $399 / 379 EUR, and will also be included in the new KOMPLETE 8 and KOMPLETE 8 ULTIMATE bundles. An update for owners of previous KONTAKT versions will be available for $119 / 99 EUR.

nwdlbots tutorial 2: Just Listen from Richard Garrett on Vimeo.

"The second in a series of tutorials about nwdlbots, a suite of generative modules for Ableton Live.

This episode demonstrates the way in which nwdlbots can interact within a Live Set using two modules called "noodle control" and "noodle send". By attaching noodle sends to each EventBot in a set, you can relay MIDI information to the control module, which collates the information and then feeds it back to the EventBots, informing their decisions regarding onset and pitch.

This allows the bots to work together controlling the density and harmony of the set.

Binary Music ARP Odyssey For Kontakt 4

ARP Odyssey For Kontakt 4 by BinaryMusic

www.binarymusic.co.uk
"Consisting of 101 presets made up of approximately 1,400 individual samples, the ARP Odyssey library is an incredibly detailed recreation of a classic vintage synthesizer.

The patches cover a wide range of sounds including bass, leads, pads, percussion and effects, all with the unique Odyssey character. There's also a selection of sounds from the original ARP Odyssey patch book and a set of sounds that were sampled with different filter settings mapped to velocity.

The History
There were three main versions of the Odyssey. The first white-faced models were manufactured from 1972, then the black and gold face from 1974.
The model that we've sampled is a black and orange faced 2821 from about 1979. This has the advantage of more stable oscillators - though nothing like the stability that we take for granted in modern gear. The Odyssey has attracted an eclectic mix of players: Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, George Duke, Portishead, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Ultravox, Gary Numan and Abba!

The Process
Throughout the entire sampling process, the aim has been to be faithful to the sound at source. No filtering or effects processing has been applied within Kontakt. Where there is filter/frequency modulation, it has been created on the Odyssey and then recorded in samples long enough to retain the movement. There's also a selection of
'Multi VCF' patches, where different filter cutoff settings have been sampled and mapped to different velocities."
