New Cwejman DP-1 Dynamic Processor Eurorack Module

"The DP-1 is a one knob compressor with additional features for dynamic treatment of music material in standard and some unique ways. The module consist of three main parts:

Compressor
The compressor is build around a high performance VCA circuit with low distortion and low noise floor. Instead of two controllers it has only one RATIO controller which compensate the signal loss at increased compression. It means that the low level signal is boosted and the high level signal is attenuated. The incoming signal passes the LEVEL INPUT controller and the outgoing signal is controlled by the OUTPUT GAIN. All parameters, such as the envelope follower (output ENV) with ATTACK and RELEASE, RATIO and OUTPUT GAIN are controllable manually by knobs and by CV inputs. The switch SOFT KNEE activates the function for gradual compression action.

Mute
The Mute (or squelch) circuit allow amplitude re-shaping in many ways for compressed or uncompressed audio signal. The muting circuit has four controllable parameters, TRESHOLD for activating the circuits at variable signal level, DEPTH for the muting process, from 0 to 72 dB deep, ATTACK and RELEASE controls for the muting process derived from the Gate. The Mute allows a complete re-shaping the dynamics for the audio signal. You can remove the unwanted and high spikes from heavy compressed signal due the compressor attack time which prevent overload the outgoing signal. The result is a compressed signal with short attack time and with no overshoots of the signal. Another example is treatment of beats, drum sounds or other sounds with variable accents or dips, variable fade in and out, also called as “push, pull”, “breathing”, or “suction” sounds. Just two examples and all four parameters are CV controllable, as well.

Side Chain Filter
The side chain is the circuit which determinate the compression and mute action related to the frequency characteristic of the side chain filtering. A side chain with equalization controls can be used to reduce the volume of signals that have a strong spectral content within a certain frequency range: it can act as a de-esser, reducing the level of vocal sibilance in the range of 6–10 kHz using the high pass filter or "de-bumper", as I called, for reduction of strong bass or sub bass signals by using the low pass filter in the sidechain path. The build in side chain filter is a 12 dB/octave multi mode filter with low pass and high pass outputs for mentioned duties and others since the corner frequency is controllable by external CV signal."

Puremagnetik alphaSynth - Alpha Syntauri Sample Set

"A library of old-school computer sounds captured from a late 1970s 8-bit Apple ][ with an Alpha Syntauri music system."

Available at Puremagnetik

This set comes from Chris Randall of Analog Industries & Audio Damage, with more to follow: "It is a heavily re-tooled and much improved version of the sample set I used to have here that I made from the alphaSyntauri. They are much, much better at that sort of thing than I, what with doing it for a living and all, and the alphaSynth set is available in several formats, including Live Rack, Kontakt, and ESX Universal.

I've made a bunch of other samples for them with various pieces of Apple ][ based kit, and you can watch out for those in the future."

Description from chrisjeffs.com/monnix :

"This live performance synthesizer uses three points of touch to control the distribution of up to 16 harmonics, allowing for unique sound effects.

Movements can be played back in the Replay page and the pitch altered by tilting the device forward. The Sample & Hold screen freezes the partials according to the selected tempo. FM ratio, jitter and envelope parameters can be set in the remaining pages, allowing for a wide variety of sonic mayhem."

"The guitar runs on either 6 C batteries or an AC adapter. Everything pictured is included. There is no strap present. The speaker is not super high quality - but it is a fun piece!"

Update via Loscha in the comments: "This has a Yamaha YM3812 or similar sound chip in it, the same as an AdLib sound card.
The drum patterns are those classic sounds, as are the patches.

The biggest issue to look out for, service wise, is that the connections to each one of the 6 piezo tranducers under the strings is prone to falling off, and requires resoldering.
The rubber on the neck is much more hard waring than Casios DG series.
There's also a MIDI-Only version of the Unisynth, but the note lengths are controlled by a single pot.

It's a great synth, usefyl for the way it makes you play differently, and puts your hand's natural tendancies out of synch."

Introducing The New STG Pulse Matrix

via stg/soundlabs

"The Pulse Matrix is a comparator and divider network configured for audio applications. Think of it as an elaborate version of the PWM and Suboctave of the SH-101. If you're not familiar with the SH-101, think of it as a little box you can put any waveform into and get a pulse wave and 4 varieties of suboctave from.

The signal input is where you would put whatever you want to turn into a pulse wave into.

The threshold control sets the 'flip' point of the comparator, and has a range of approximately negative five volts to positive five volts. think of it as a pulse width control.

The control input has a dedicated attenuator and is summed with the manual control, and allows for external modulation of the threshold point. Think of it as a pulse width modulation input.

Next are five outputs. They are all ten volt peak-to-peak signal to play nice with other audio modules. This is unlike the sh-101, where the suboctave had a dc offset which made its bass frequencies not as strong as they could have been.

The first is the direct output of the comparator. In "pulse width" terms this is zero to one hundred percent.

The second output is a 50 percent duty cycle wave one octave lower than the main output.

The third output is a variable output, from one to forty-nine percent duty cycle, one octave lower than the main output.

The fourth output is a 50 percent duty cycle wave two octaves lower than the main output.

The fifth output is a 25 percent duty cycle wave two octaves lower than the main output.

This module only has a physical depth of 2 inches.

Price: $215

"This is more or less a study in how simple things can be done. So I used the two most simple keyboards that I have - the Casio PT-1 and PT-80 - and played a simple song from the 1980's.

I found that the PIUUU PIUUU DWIWIWIWIWIWI sound made a humorous replacement for the bended guitar intro. And I think this is actually the first time I have used the little PT-1 in a video.

Some people might say that I am ruining Mike Oldfields song. But I think it asked for it. As a matter of fact I think it needs to be punished!"

Make Noise Brings Physical Modelling to Modulars - Mystery Module Revealed

Waveform City Episode 11 Make Noise by waveform city

An interview with Tony Rolando of Make Noise via Waveform City. This is pretty big news for the synth history and the synth community. You might remember the Make Noise mystery module from this video and this video. It turns out it will be the first voltage controlled physical modeling module. It gets mentioned eleven minutes into the interview. For those of you familiar with some of the major milestones in the history of synthesis, this is significant. If you take a look at http://120years.net/ you will find a number of electronic instruments that lead to what we define as synthesizers today, but most think of it all starting with the first analog modulars from Moog and Buchla in the 60s. These made way for self contained analog synths in the 70s and eventually digital synths in the 80s including FM synthesis, samplers, sdditive synths like the Kawai K5 and K5000s, and the mass of PCM/Sample based synths. The next major breakthrough didn't come until the 90s when Physical Modelling arrived with the Yamaha VL1 (1994) and Korg Prophecy (1995). The first analog modelling synth was the Clavia Nord Lead (1995). The Make Noise mystery module will be the first to bring physical modeling to the modern modular world. That's pretty significant when you think about it. See Waveform City for more podcast interviews with makers in the modern modular market.
