Casio XW-P1 XW-G1 Moog Inspired Set

Published on Aug 28, 2013 casiokeyboards·58 videos

"A quick information video of a new bank of sounds, inspired by the Minimoog. It is such a classic design and sound that is still sought after today. Casio's XW-P1 and XW-G1 while being a digital synthesizers can do a pretty remarkable job of mimicking those classic Moog sounds. The Minimoog had 3 oscillators plus a noise generator and although the XW has a 4th oscillator in its Solo Synth engine - all of these sounds were crafted with the original in mind. A set of 10 Leads and basses, the specialties of the Minimoog. Separate versions above for the XW-P1 and XW-G1. Downloadable at www.casiomusicforums.com"

AudioBombs.com - Digital Tools for DJs, Producers, and Performers

Audiobombs is a new site for sharing audio production tools and related content. Launched at the beginning of July, the site is the creation of Lucien Wegner, Tim Van Steenburgh, and Alex Silva. Two months after launching, the site has over 500 registered users and 140 user-contributed items that are free to download.

Content categories include Ableton Racks, Synth Soundsets, TouchOSC Templates, and others (with more categories to come).

Here’s some more info about the site, directly from Lucien and Tim:

“Our main goal for the site is the bring together all the great content that’s currently scattered all over the web, and buried in discussion forums, into one central, searchable, location.

We’re really excited about the positive feedback we’re getting from our users. User feedback will definitely shape the future of the site. We have lots of cool stuff planned already, but we want to make sure we’re building something that the community loves.”

ADSR envelope generator test

Published on Jul 25, 2013 pirxmodular·3 videos

"ADSR envelope generator test using Leader LBO-9CH-B oscilloscope.

The LBO-9CH-B is a X-Y scope used as a display device in Hitachi 60 MHz NMR spectrometer. The scope has a relatively long phosphor persistence which allows looking at slow rate signals.

Here, a MFOS ADSR envelope generator controls the Y-axis of the scope. The X-axis (time) is controlled by a slow-rate sawtooth VCO synced with the envelope trigger.

What you hearing is Jurgen Haible Living VCOs mixed and fed through a YuSynth Minimoog VCF filter controlled by the ADSR generator."

"Chaotica is a third order analog chaos circuit with voltage control over many parameters, designed by Ian Fritz.

This video only scratches the surface of the circuit capabilities. I was manually tweaking the circuit parameters in order to generate various chaotic patterns. X-Y outputs of the circuit are connected to a DIY laser projector. The sound comes from the Chaotica Z output and is processed by Neural Agonizer spring reverb.

Beware of your speaker levels - the recording covers a wide frequency range."

MIDI Turned 30 This Month - Featured in The Register

Great MIDI Birthday cake synth art by Dennis Irwin via this article on The Register.  See if you can spot the synths.  It appears the Sequential Circuits Prophet-600 & Roland JX-3P, the first synths to have MIDI and hooked up for the first time at Winter NAMM 1983 didn't get invited.  Or maybe they are passed out in the other room.  Regardless, it's a great picture.  Dave Smith & Ikutaro Kakehashi received a 2013 Technical GRAMMY for MIDI as posted here.   Click through for a pic from the 1983 NAMM floor.

via The Register: "The interface started off just living up to expectations and connecting devices together but later it became an enduring ecosystem. Not only did this network protocol deliver both real-time and non-real-time data transfers, it even notched up a platform-neutral file format.

Moreover, this 31.25kbd 10-bit, 16-channel network is still very much in use today, 30 years after its official 1.0 specification release in August 1983. They’ve been saying it all year and let’s say it again: Happy Birthday MIDI..."

The Register is running a massive feature on MIDI this month. The following links to each article.

Happy birthday MIDI 1.0: Getting pop stars wired for 30 years
Happy birthday MIDI 1.0: Slave to the rhythm
MIDI daddy Dave Smith: '30 years of version 1.0 shows we got it right'

MIDI was also celebrated at this year's NAMM in January as featured here with a panel discussion including Alan Parsons, Tom Oberheim, Dave Smith, Jordan Rudess, George Duke and Craig Anderton.

tubbutec Polysex KORG Polysix Mods

via tubbutec

"The Polysex mod adds an additional control panel to your Korg Polysix synthesizer to increase the number of possible sounds you can create.

There are two different mods which can both be used at the same time:

The pitch mod routes the envelope to the pitch. You can choose the polarity of the envelope and the reference point in the envelope where the pitch is not changed. This mod is very useful to create portamento like effects, brass instruments, percussive sounds and much more.

The second mod is the voice spread mod which is a very powerful tool. You can determine the amount of voice spread, route the envelope and one of two LFOs to it and switch voice spreading on and off in poly mode. This mod can be used to adjust and modulate the fatness of the sound in unison mode, in poly mode you can modulate how detuned the Polysix sounds. This can lead to more natural sounds, but can also be used to accomplish complex sound effects."

Audible Genius Debuts Syntorial - Interactive Synthesizer Training Software

Published on Aug 21, 2013 Syntorial·5 videos

"Go to www.syntorial.com to try, buy and learn more."

You might remember Synthorial on Kickstarter previously posted here.
They reached their goal and Syntorial is now available.

"Audible Genius Debuts Syntorial - Interactive Synthesizer Training Software

New York, NY (August 23, 2013) — Audible Genius proudly announces the debut of Syntorial, synthesizer training software designed to teach musicians how to program synths and design sound. Pairing video demonstrations with interactive challenges, Syntorial builds the user's ability to program patches by ear. The built-in synthesizer includes 64 common synth parameters that are gradually introduced, one-by-one, to create a challenging yet enjoyable learning experience from start to finish.

Available for download on August 27th, Syntorial is the creation of Joe Hanley, a synth-loving musician determined to build a tutorial that would eliminate all of the science-speak and instead teach users the way in which each control affects sound—information they can immediately apply to real-life sound design situations. “In my early efforts to become a better synth programmer, I read a lot of books and articles and watched a lot of videos,” says Hanley. “And while I felt more knowledgeable, I was still unable to translate the sounds I was hearing into actual synth patches. Syntorial is intended to bridge that gap.”

Gone are the days of relying on presets. Syntorial advances the skill set of its users by teaching them to program the sounds they hear and gain a deep and intuitive understanding of the most common synth parameters, all at their own pace.

Syntorial features include:

• 129 Interactive Challenges
• 147 Videos
• 706 Patches
• 64 Synth Parameters
• 39 Quizzes
• 33 "On Your Own" Tasks

Syntorial is available for immediate download on Tuesday, August 27th at 10 a.m. EST, and is compatible with Mac (Intel, 10.6 or later) or Windows (8, 7, Vista). Regularly priced at $129.99, Audible Genius is running an introductory sale price of $99.99 through September 6th.

To learn more about Syntorial, try it for free, or purchase the software, visit www.syntorial.com."
