Paul Hartnoll, Orbital on the ARP ODYSSEY

Published on Nov 11, 2015 ARP

"Paul Hartnoll was one half of electronic dance act Orbital who had huge success both critically and commercially.
Orbital owned the 90’s dance scene but it was their headline appearance at the Glastonbury Festival on 25 June 1994 that brought them most attention. Q magazine classed it as one of the top 50 gigs of all time, and in 2002 included Orbital in their list of "50 Bands to See Before You Die". Roland Boutique Artist Interviews - Paul Hartnoll, A Guy Called Gerald, DJ Pierre

Published on Sep 30, 2016 RolandChannel

Playlist:
1. Roland Boutique Paul Hartnoll interview

"As one half of the legendary Orbital, Paul Hartnoll knows a thing or two about putting a killer tune together, and just as much about how to recreate that sound live in front of thousands of people.

We visited Paul’s studio to discuss the latest Roland Boutiques, and ended up finding out where Orbital got their first 303 from, and why they think their original TR-909 and TB-303 could be rather special."

2. Roland Boutique A Guy Called Gerald interview

"Making electronic music since the mid ‘80s gives A Guy called Gerald a certain perspective on the industry.
We spoke to the genre-busting producer on his first encounters with the original TR-909 and TB-303, how they helped him get started with his music, and what he thinks of the latest additions to Roland Boutique family, especially the TR-09 and TB-03.

You’ll also find out that 808 State’s ‘Pacific State’ was originally called something completely different…"

3. Roland Boutique DJ Pierre interview

"DJ Pierre is synonymous with the sound of acid house, and although the acclaimed producer has an enviable catalog of productions under his belt, it’s possibly his first release that has had the biggest impact on electronic music culture.

Phuture’s Acid Trax kick-started the acid house genre by subverting the sound of Roland’s TB-303 bassline synth, and we caught up with Pierre to talk about those early years with the TB-303, and what he thinks of the new TB-03 Roland Boutique."

Paul Hartnoll of Orbital Remixes Dr. Who Sea Devils Score

This one is in via Suit & Tie Guy.

"To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who (this Saturday), Paul Hartnoll did a remix of a cue from The Sea Devils score. The Sea Devils was a Doctor Who story which used the Synthi 100 exclusively and is one of the most captivating synthesiser soundtracks i've ever heard. I first heard that excerpt from The Sea Devils on a DW 20th anniversary picture disc that i bought soon after becoming a DW fan in 1991 as a freshman in high school. it's haunted me ever since. (coincidentally i didn't even finally _see_ The Sea Devils until 2004. and yes the Sea Devils Filter is essentially an EMS filter.)"

Pictured above is Malcolm Clarke with the Synthi 100 via the RADIOPHONIC GALLERY on whitefiles.org. "Caption: It's 1974 and a bearded and long-haired Malcolm Clarke intently studies the settings of the EMS 'Delaware' synthesiser, located at this time in Room 10. The small supplementary mixer at the bottom was constructed by Richard-Yeoman Clark. The box on top of the Delaware contains a standard BBC Peak Programme Meter (PPM)."

And the remix followed by a remastered version of the original piece and the first two parts of the episode. The third part appears to be blocked by the BBC.

"To celebrate 50 years of doctor who here's a remix I (Paul Hartnoll) did for a doctor who album of mixes that sadly wasn't released.

It's been gathering dust on a hard drive for years so what better time to get it out, I'm sure nobody will mind!

It's a version of Doctor Who and the Sea Devils written by Malcolm Clark and staring my first doctor John Pertwee."

"While I'm not going to be making full soundtracks available to download, I am remastering some of my favorite music from the classic series to use in my audio play "Doctor Who: Twilight" Enjoy!
Just a note to Mark Ayres: this is also a bit of a teaser for people to buy the actual album, not a strict re-upload/rip of the music.

Paul Hartnoll meets the new 2600

Published on Apr 20, 2020 Korg

"We headed to Brighton to meet up with Paul Hartnoll, one half of the pioneering EDM duo Orbital. The reason for the visit was to introduce him to the new ARP 2600!

Paul is no stranger to this iconic synthesiser, having purchased a 2600 for Orbital back in 1993, and is still the pride of place in his studio. Paul told us “We used 2600 a lot on the albums In Sides and Snivilisation, (particularly) on the track Kien Trink Wasser. It starts quite orchestral then jumps into a big bass drop which was the 2600. The original is all over those albums, sometimes more subtly”.

In this video, you can see Paul take a first look at the new ARP2600 FS, making some initial comparisons to the original. “The added LFO is a great addition. I love that feature”. Summarising, Paul describes the 2600FS as a “fresh, sparkly, clean (dirty) ARP - straight out of the box”.

Note: Filmed way back when life was normal, pre isolation!"

Novation // Innovation Since 1992 Uploaded on Jan 30, 2014 NovationTV·181 videos

Interesting insight with EDP Wasp creator Chris Huggertt. At 2:25 he states the original BassStation used the VCA & filter of the Wasp, "the analog synth part of the Wasp."

Details on the Contest and Sample Pack (Press Release):

"Novation Releases a Heritage Celebration Short Film, FREE 800MB Sample Pack, and All-Star Judged Competition to WIN its Powerful Synth Line

Novation is celebrating its heritage with a short film that explores Novation past, present, and future, along with a completely free sample pack comprising over 800MB of loops, single hits, multi sampled patches, and drum kits from its unforgettable and modern classic synths.

In addition, Novation are offering three people the chance to win their choice of Bass Station II, UltraNova, or MiniNova - their award winning current lineup of synthesisers - in a make-a-track competition with an all-star judging panel including Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), Liam Howe (Lana Del Rey, Sneaker Pimps), Eats Everything, and Timo Maas in a competition running from the 4th of February to the 4th of March 2014.

Novation co-founder Ian Jannoway, legendary synth designer Chris Huggett, Gus Unger-Hamilton of Alt-J, Sneaker Pimps and Lana Del Ray producer Liam Howe, and product manager Matt Derbyshire all feature in a very special short film that charts the rise of Novation from humble beginnings to a company whose musical innovations support a user base that includes - amongst many others - Orbital, M4SONIC, Rudimental, T.E.E.D, Lunice, Alt-J, Teddy Riley, and Jimmy Mac - keyboardist for international sensation Lorde.

Supernova II, K Station, Bass Station, Drum Station, Bass Station II and Ultranova are all represented in the heritage sample pack, and Novation are launching a month long competition with an all-star judging panel including Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), Liam Howe (Lana Del Ray, Sneaker Pimps), Eats Everything, and Timo Maas to create a track using the pack - with three winners each winning their choice of either Ultranova, Mininova, or Bass Station II. The competition runs from 4th of February 2014 to 4th of March 2014.

micromac-d with touch arpeggio and seq with NEXUS

Published on Dec 9, 2012 by macbethsynthesizers

"Here's an experiment that I did. I replaced one octave of touch keys that I'm working on on an old scrap SH101.....it works perfectly!....my next shot is to give the scrapper SH101 a full three octaves as opposed to the two and a half octave keybed. If this all works- the touch keyboard I'm going to do as a stand-alone will have this built is seq! The sequencer is driving the up and coming Micromac-D synthesizer and I also played here the prototype of the experimental NEXUS 1 analogue touch synthesizer!"

Paul Hartnoll Meets...!

Published on Dec 9, 2012

"Last Sunday, Paul Hartnoll from the great electronic band Orbital paid a visit for tea and a sandwich, and also to talk synths a play around with some new projects that I'm working on. Here we see him tweaking with the MacBeth NEXUS 1 prototype. All sounds are recorded to the camera mic, as opposed to the desk- so don't expect high quality. It was a fun day and I was a guest in the evening for a fantastic gig that featured the MacBeth M5N played by a master!"

Lost tapes of the Dr Who composer

via the BBC
"A hidden hoard of recordings made by the electronic music pioneer behind the Doctor Who theme [Delia Debyshire] has been revealed - including a dance track 20 years ahead of its time...

Most unexpected of all, however, is a piece of music that sounds like a contemporary dance track which was recorded, it is believed, in the late sixties.

Paul Hartnoll, formerly of the dance group Orbital and a great admirer of Ms Derbyshire's work, said the track was, "quite amazing".

'That could be coming out next week on [left-field dance label] Warp Records,' he noted.

'It's incredible when you think when it comes from. Timeless, really. It could be now as much as then.'

Delia Derbyshire's voice can be heard introducing it. 'Forget about this,' she says, 'it's for interest only.'"

Click here for the track. Realize this is the 60s. Utterly amazing.

Orbital - Against The Clock

Published on Dec 19, 2018 FACTmagazine

"Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll went against the clock to see if he could make something beautiful out of vocal samples from a variety of British politicians. Why? He says it best himself: 'Why not make some sense out of a load of old rubbish?'

Using a couple of samplers and a drum machine, the rave pioneer had just ten minutes to build a track from a variety of manipulated samples, including a ‘Boris Johnson kick drum’ and a ‘Theresa May lead’, in the hope that the resulting sounds are at least 'prettier than when they went in'."

MacBeth Nexus 1 Prototype

via Ken MacBeth on Facebook

"When Paul Hartnoll from Orbital paid me a visit towards the end of last year- he tried out the NEXUS prototype- he said he liked it, but for him it was important that Octave switching for each oscillator (4) be included. We also talked about PWM. Now there is octave switching- and PWM for oscs 1 and 3. These are completely deicated modulators aimed at their target oscs...so two separate moving waveforms to add to one hell of a sound! I myself also wanted pitch bend- in this case *Ultrabend*, master tune and a dedicated master LFO control! NEXUS is NEXT!"
