New Mutable Music Things – Ears Eurorack Module

Wait a sec. Mutable as in Mutable Instruments, Music Things as in Music Thing? That is correct.

via Thonk

"Ears is Mutable’s take on the Music Thing Modular Mikrophonie module, Ears is a perfect match for physical synthesis modules like Rings or Elements, but it can also be the gateway between external audio sources and your modular system.

We don’t normally stock non DIY products at Thonk, but when Olivier offered us a worldwide exclusive on the first batch of his new Ears module… how could we refuse?!

This module brings together two of the most (if not the most..) prolific and creative designers in the open source Eurorack scene, Mutable Instruments and Music Thing Modular.

Ears is Mutable’s take on Tom Whitwell’s Mikrophonie module, Ears is a perfect match for physical synthesis modules like Rings or Elements, but it can also be the gateway between external audio sources and your modular system.

And a couple of user videos:

"First play today with Ears, Mutable Instruments take on Tom Whitwell’s Mikrophonie module. Literally only the first patch set up wto test it out today. Qu-Bit Electronix provides a constant drone, taking a loop of my voice humming away, as Elements is played by Ears, with the various changes affected by my touch. Arturia BeatStep Pro offers up the melodic content. Simple but fun. This looks likely to live in my performance case for some time now!"

Music Thing Mikrophonie Modular

Published on Jun 4, 2014 Robin Rimbaud-Scanner·47 videos

"New sonic adventures with Mikrophonie by Music Thing Modular/Tom Whithwell, with a very easy way to bring environmental noise and feedback into a modular system, inspired by the early days of electroacoustic music in Paris and Cologne.

Here I am running a TipTop BD808 Bass Drum sequenced from TipTop Trigger Riot, processed through Audio Damage Dub JR. The Clock is sent to the FM input of the Synthesis Technology Morphing Terrarium e350, which is sent through a Qu-Bit Electronix RT60 reverb, and then modulated by hand too. The Mikrophonie is played by hand drumming on the piezo contact mic connected to the module, triggering a Make Noise STO, passed through the TipTop Z2040 LP-VCF and TipTop Z-DSP VC Digital Signal Processor with the Halls of Valhalla card inserted. All of which is mixed into the Intellijel Mutamix/Linix.

All recorded live with no editing."

Modular Jam #2 with Analog Four and Maschine - "Creepy Shadow Monsters"

Published on Oct 29, 2014 Matt Keenan

"Free download of the track: http://music.mattkeenan.co.uk/track/c...

Equipment used:

- Elektron Analog Four
- Native Instruments Maschine
- Intellijel Metropolis, Atlantis
- Grayscale Synapse
- 4ms Shuffling Clock Multiplier (and breakouts)
- Synthrotek Sequence 8, Echo
- Make Noise Maths, Pressure Points, MMG
- Music Thing Modular Mikrophonie
- Doepfer A-143-4 Quad VCLFO/LFO

For the bass, clock comes from Analog Four through Synapse and 4ms SCM, to Metropolis. Pitch and gate goes to Atlantis. Pretty basic setting on Atlantis, just a bit of FM on the filter. The output goes to MMG then audio interface.
Metropolis has two auxiliary modulations. One comes from Pressure Points, which changes the octave. The other is from Sequence 8, transposing the notes. Sequence 8 is being triggered by CV trigs on the A4, so I can have a pattern which stays on the root note and doesn't trigger the transpose.

The echoey rattling comes from Mikrophonie, into Echo and out to audio interface. The rate on Echo is modulated by the Doepfer LFO through Maths for attenuation.

The other synth parts are on Analog Four, being muted and unmuted, and modulated by a few performance macros.

Drums on Maschine."

Elements & Mikrophonie

via Laurentide Synthworks

"I've been beta testing the new set of MI modules the past couple months. Elements by far is my favorite. The others are amazing in their own right, but Elements is something special. Hook a Mikrophonie up to it and it becomes unworldly."

KOMA's Field Kit launched on Kickstarter!

"After a year of development, testing and prototyping, KOMA Elektronik is proud to present the latest addition to the KOMA family: the KOMA Elektronik Field Kit! On Kickstarter now! The new KOMA Elektronik Field Kit is the perfect tool for everyone who would like to experiment with electroacoustic sound. Use everyday objects, amplify them and use them to make sound, like our heroes John Cage and David Tudor used to do!

The Field Kit is optimized to process signals from microphones, contact microphones, electromagnetic pickups and able to run DC motors and solenoids. On top of that it can receive radio signals and convert signals from switches and sensors into control voltage. The Field Kit boasts 7 separate functional blocks all focussed on receiving or generating all types of signals. They are designed to operate together as a coherent electroacoustic workstation or alternatively together with other pieces of music electronics with the ability to use control voltage signals:

Four Channel Mixer
Envelope Follower
DC Interface
Analog Switch Interface
Analog Sensor Interface
AM/FM/SW Radio
Low Frequency Oscillator
You can easily interface the Field Kit with a Eurorack modular system. At the backside of the PCB you will find a power connector you can use to power the unit from your system. The total panel width is 36HP. You can buy the Field Kit as a finished unit or build one yourself with the DIY Version."

"All audio has been recorded straight from the Field Kit, using a DC Motor, Solenoid Motor, a DC powered fan, Roland TR-8 and Berlin's local radio station Antenne Brandenburg as audio sources."

Additional details via Kickstarter.

Purim Modular Synthesizer Demo [Episode 43]

Published on Mar 1, 2018 CatSynth TV

"Today is the Jewish festival of Purim, and to mark the occasion we present a demo featuring a traditional grager run through our modular synthesizer.

All sounds originate from the grager, either live or recorded. The following modules are used for processing:

Make Noise Echophon
Qu-Bit Nebulae (v1)
Rossum Electro-Music Morpheus
Mikrophonie
Make Noise Maths
Make Noise Tempi
Malekko Heavy Industry Noisering

Purim is a holiday that commemorates the saving of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire from the king’s wicked advisor Haman, as told in the book of Esther. Traditionally, the name of Haman is masked by noisemakers known as gragers,

Mutable Instruments Ears

Published on Jan 20, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"Ears, from Mutable Instruments, is their take on Tom Whitwell's Mikrophonie module, which provided a panel-mounted contact mic for tactile sound generation. Ears is a perfect match for a physically modeling synth such as Rings or Elements, prodiving a wide range of excitation noises. Ears also provides up to 40dB of gain, bringing any quiet sounds up to modular level. It has a high inpedance input, meaning it will work fine with guitars or other electro-acoustic instruments. In addition to this is an envelope follower, which provides a voltage at the peaks of the fluctuating volumes. A gate threshold also outputs a trigger whenever the volume exceeds a limit. This is great for using Ears as a drum or other percussive source."
