Mobile Music Making Seminar - Day 1 Part 1

Published on Jul 31, 2013

"A little insight into the first day of the international App Music Seminar at the Berlin Summer University of the Arts 2013. We played a classical piece to get in contact with sensor based apps and later we made some exploration.

The 'App Music' seminar will be a composition and sound workshop in the form of an experimental laboratory; a creative space to explore music and make new discoveries. Participants will investigate perspectives and potential of "app music" through a collective 'learning by doing' approach.

4ms Modular Stackable Cases

via 4ms on Facebook

"So your synth is made of modules, but why isn't your synth case itself modular?

Well we think it can be. We're pretty excited about these new prototype ideas we've been batting around the shop this week.
Each row is an independent unit (all metal enclosure), and multiple rows can be configured in various ways using low-cost connectors.

Wood, acrylic, tolex, or your favorite material could be used for end caps. These standard-sized rows can drop into an existing case, and be pulled out, swapped, or re-ordered with just a few screws."

Watch for our upcoming video explaining this setup, and how we built it from our very own DIY guru mark. Until then, happy 4th!"

1967 Vintage London MELLOTRON Programme Effects Generator From the BBC

[You might recognize this one from this previous post]
"This is a very unusual branch of the Mellotron Chamberlin tape-replay family; the PEG - short for Programme Effects Generator, designed for the BBC in London. Circa 1967, the Streetly Company - makers of Mellotrons since 1964 - decided to use their expertise in sampling/playback technology to create this - an easy way to record/load/play sound effects libraries. Only a few were made (this one is serial number 47) although I have never seen or heard of another existing still. Supposedly, these were used for most shows for a few years in the late 1960s, as they could easily load/record and then playback any number of custom sounds without having to spool reel tapes as before. Dr. Who? The Archers? Yes, unlike normal Mellotrons, this unit does record anything you input.

The unit is currently crated for shipping. It runs on 220V 60Hz, so may need a step-up power transformer for North America. I have tried it and some functions work with lights, tape loading, motor action, etc, but have no audio output. It will certainly need work from a skilled technician. On the good side, it had HUNDREDS of pages of documentation- beside the full owner's manual, there is a rather extensive tech book with well over a hundred pages of circuitry, systems explanation, schematics, parts listings - this was common in the days of independent studios, who had to repair their own gear on-site.

The unit comes with a few dozen tape modules - these are Mellotronics' custom catridges that load into the unit; when loaded, the machine pulls and spools the tape around the playback system (an internal tape machine). They play as a one-shot, or can be auto-faded as they play.

The PEG comes with a spare 5th channel (4 are included in the 4-channel chassis) that I will ship separately, as well as a heavy unit that can be used to create varispeed (there is no multipin cable to connect this, but it will run at standard speed)..."

I'll be there - ARP Explorer I (analog synthesizer from 1974)

Published on Jul 30, 2013 MrCaliforniaD·18 videos

"Here's what that wonderfull song could have sounded like if it was recorded on analog synthesizers from that era. It is kind of an early take on the king of pop concept!

This may sound like your average "General Midi" sounds but it isn't. EVERY sounds were made on this 1974 machine from ARP company.

To get polyphony from this monophonic synthesizer, I used "Notelogic", a VST that enables you to explode polyphonic midi tracks into your choice of voices (1 to 8). Each voice become an individual midi track that can be then passed through a monophonic synthesizer using a Midi to CV converter.

Thus, that particular song have 32 tracks for the instruments alone. The drums were made with EZdrummer and the vocal track is from the original song.

Fell free to ask me questions about this procedure."

via this auction - cool white Moog knobs.

"This is basically the "frac-rack" design that has been modified to work in a Eurorack system. A couple things to note: there are a number of very small nicks in the surface which aren't really obvious except at certain angles. The circuit board is very deep, and measures very slightly under 6.75 inches from the back of the faceplate to the edge of the board. Please make sure to measure your case to ensure that it fits! Otherwise this module looks and sounds fantastic, and performs a number of duties beyond filtering - as an 8 phase LFO / VCO and with wave shaping capabilities when patching the outputs into its control inputs. This module is a one of a kind build for Eurorack and won't be found anywhere else! I have pasted the manufacturer's description below for your convenience. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.

The Mankato Filter is a four-pole lowpass filter with positive and negative outputs at every pole, giving you slopes of 6 dB/oct, 12 dB/oct, 18 dB/oct, and 24 dB/oct simultaneously. the negative slope outputs allow you to use the Mankato as a quadrature sine oscillator with 8 available phases. the Mankato will self-resonate from subaudio to superaudio, and responds to one volt per octave through its unattenuated control inputs. the signal inputs are DC coupled, which allows you to use the Mankato as a voltage-controlled slew limiter..."

"He [Dieter Doepfer] replied to me that the A-190-4 will replace the A-190-1 as the A-190-1 has been developed more than 15 years ago and is a bit old-fashioned and long-winded to operate.
Mainly the missing display has been complained by several customers (i.e. no display of the parameter like midi channel, reference note, scale settings, portamento and pitch-bend range, clock divider, status of the built-in (software) LFO and so on).

The basic functions of the A-190-4 will be the same as the A-190-1 but the man-machine interface will be better because of the display that shows the parameter value. It will also be equipped with USB..."

One of a Kind Custom Roland TR-808 Drum Machine - Mind the Step

"One of a kind TR-808! Case was removed to enable all of the mods. This 808 has been unleashed into a whole new realm of mind blowing. It really is something to behold for live sets, both visually, and the sounds that can be achieved are guaranteed to rock any dance floor. The case and lid are effectively integrated to take it on the road with confidence. All the mods are completely stable. The previous owner did the work, and I have used it for the last 6 years without fault. I'm sorry to see this go, but I'm just not writing enough tunes these days to warrant having in my studio. A collector may be horrified by the non-standard look, but performers/producers will really appreciate the versatility and depth added to the 808 sound. And besides, these drum machines should be played, not placed on the shelf!

It also has a KADI port added so you can fully MIDI integrate using a Kenton Pro KADI (not included - see my other auction). Recommend using it with the Pro KADI if you plan to compose using a PC/Mac software package.

Bassdrum

-Pitch control added (lowest point is gut churning low and highest is up with conga pitch)

-Pitch bypass added to quickly revert back to the original Bass Drum pitch

-Decay range expanded to allow zero to self-oscillation

-Decay bypass added to quickly revert back to the original Bass Drum decay

-Tone range expanded to enable sound adjustment from smooth as silk to a snappy crack

Snare

-Decay added to enable nil up to 50% - makes an awesome effect for break downs and build ups

-Noise filter added with sweepable cutoff

Toms (LT/MT/HT)

-Conga switch removed (not needed) with tune range increased to 5 x original amount from Tom to way above conga

-Decay range modded to start from zero (ie. isolate the reverb that can be annoying) to 50% greater than self oscillation

-On/off reverb switch added - isolate the reverb in an instant

-Reverb amp added (lowest point original, highest = 10x original)

-Reverb length added - can shorten to a snap to sound 909-like

-Oscillator on/off switch added to play just the reverb - can achieve some truly tripped out glitch effects when combined with the other controls

Rim Shot

-Rim shot and claves circuits now split into two modular parts. Half of the Claves sound can be sent into the Rim shot circuit to create a high pitched sound and half of the Rim Shot can be sent into the -Claves to produce a cool resonant blip.

-The original sounds for both can be easily recalled with an easy press of the respective sound half circuit patching switches.

-Added a Rim Shot oscillator filter installed (only works with the original circuit path)

Clap

-Clap noise source filter (basically a pitch/tune control)

-Clap reverb level added, adjustable from 0 to 120% of the original level

-Clap width control added, but it looks like this mod has resulted in the clap stuck on a long distant sound. When I originally bought the 808 the guy who did the mod indicated it is a very easy fix for someone handy with a soldering iron. I never got around to doing it and wasn’t too fussed about not having the Clap.

Cymbal

-Cymbal oscillator mixer added so it is possible to individually isolate the three oscillators that make up the cymbal sound.

-Cymbal Osc. 3 modified to enable range control. Osc. 3 is the original source for the adjustable cymbal decay. It can now be dialled down to zero.

-Cymbal Osc. 3 distortion switch added – this sounds really cool.

Note: Cowbell, Maracas and HiHats are original with no mods. The Accent is still original too.

New Modular Output Section:

-12db multimode diode ladder filter installed with patchable input section from all the different percussion instruments.

-Any instrument can be or combination of instruments can be filtered AND switched in and out of the filter. It is such a simple thing, but absolutely awesome when playing a live set.

Non-Sound Mods:

-Original power supply replaced.

-All switches and pots replaced

-The Tempo range was changed (via a quality pot with greater resolution) and fine tempo deleted. Din sync still available, but I always went with the Pro-KADI.

-All wiring was replaced and upgraded.

-Memory backup was installed via a 4.5v battery pack plug. Unfortunately the standard memory only lasts a couple of hours. Although I never really bothered with it that much and just wrote down patterns or used Cubase. I only really used it sometimes before heading out to play a set.

-New sturdy case (everything was transplanted over)

More Info:

The filter is a little noisy and picks up some noise from the 808 trigger lines. This sounds absolutely stunning when the background noise is used to self-oscillate the filter, or the trigger signal of an instrument is used to create a worble like techno baseline .However if you want to play without the disturbance from the filter, its output can be switched off. With the filter off, the filter instrument patch sounds act like mute switches, which is also great for cutting on the fly.

When using with Cubase for composing, you can trigger each instrument individually on the virtual keyboard.

Only issue is the “2nd part” in the sequencer to extend steps from 32 to 64. For some reason it doesn’t work, so basically stuck with only 32 steps. I.e. the “1st part” with Parts A and B work perfectly, as does the Autofill function as well. The illuminated switches look unreal on stage and the large pots have a great feel!.."
