New Innerclock MIDI Timing Litmus Tests on Various Hardware Synths

You might recall Innerclock Systems iOS litmus tests previously post here. They have just posted another round of litmus tests this time focusing on various hardware synths both vintage and new.

"In this variation of the Original Litmus timing test we take a precision MIDI Sequencer and program a single track of continuous and sample-accurate 16th Midi Note Events. No other MIDI messages are generated - no Continuous Control, no Aftertouch, no MIDI Clock and no MIDI Time Code. Just MIDI Note On and MIDI Note Off. The continuous 16th MIDI Note events are on Channel 1 exclusively.

In real-world use with extended polyphony, multiple MIDI Channels and Continuous Controller activity the timing performance results as reported here will almost certainly get worse. MIDI is a serial protocol - it can only ever perform one trick at any one time. You can transmit an enormous amount of MIDI data down a single cable but the receiving device deals with each byte only when it can get to it. The harder you make it work, the worse the timing train wreck is on the other side. How much that bothers you is for you to decide.

At a tempo of 120 BPM there should be exactly 6000 samples @ 48kHz between any two consecutive 16th Midi Note events."

You'll find the full list of synths and results on Innerclock Systems here.

Pressure points est un peu embêtant car deux gates de suites sont accolés et quand ils se suivent ça ne fait qu'un seul déclenchement, Mais il y a moyen de bien s'amuser quand même.

Tiptop Audio Releases Trigger Riot Sequencer

"TIPTOP AUDIO INTRODUCES TRIGGER RIOT SEQUENCER

A Fresh New Approach to Making Beats, Drums, and Other Rhythmic Elements for Electronic Musicians in the Age of Now.

Sunnyvale, CA, June 26, 2013 What happens if you put a clock divider, clock multiplier, step injector, time shifter, clock shifter, pulse width modulator, and an arithmatic probablity proces sor all under the control of a single knob? Now what will happen if you fit 16 of those knobs into a single module and have them interact? YOU WILL HAVE A RIOT, A TRIGGER RIOT! With so much going on, simply tweaking a few knobs gets a lot happening on its eight chan nels, with sequences building up, interesting patterns evolving, and streams of triggers and gates pouring from the outputs.

The Trigger Riot represents a new type of pattern sequencer that is both creatively deep on one hand and intuitive on the other.

This innovative sequencer is used to compose rhythmic elements in the modular synth in a unique method and way that has never been used before. The Trigger Riot creates sequences with knobs instead of switches, with the knobs able to be used independently or in Matrix. The concept takes a bit to get used to but in the end is very simple to understand, the TR gener ates or takes in a clock signal, each of the knobs can be used as the Programmable Clock Divider (divider), Clock sequencer (steps), or both to generate streams of triggers and gates at the outputs.

As a highly accurate clock source it has 8 outputs, each output can have up to 4 clock divi sions and each of these divisions can be assigned a probability of triggering, clock shifting, time shifting, fractional clock multiplication and pulse width. Additionally, each output has 4 steps that do not repeat like a division.

Not only are all the quick manipulative functions at your fingertips and the playability instanta neous, but you never have to worry about it going obsolete with the ability to upgrade with USB firmware.

Other features include: non volatile memory for patterns, syncronization with external gear, smart syncronization of multiRiot setups, din sync with vintage x0x boxes, an internal precise tempo clock generator, tap tempo, preset looping, sequencing of independent channels or cross relationship matrix sequencing for some real trigger madhouse.

It can be used to time any modulation source such as the Z4000 envelope generator, Z8000 CV sequencer, and many others but also to trigger our complete synth voices and drum mod ules in tandem, creating the world’s first fully modular drum machine: the Tiptop analog groove generator of the new age.

QuNeo Now Supported by Over 30 Popular Music Applications

"QuNeo Now Supported by Over 30 Popular Music Applications

Exciting new integration for FL Studio, Reason, VirtualDJ and Spark

BERKELEY, California – June 27, 2013 – Keith McMillen Instruments, developer of the most expressive instruments for making music with computers, announced today a new wave of music software integration for its QuNeo 3D Multi-touch pad controller.

QuNeo, the most expressive pad controller on the market, is now the most widely supported. QuNeo works out of the box with over 30 music applications, yet allows for easy tweaking to suit every player's needs.

This video [above] shows over 30 applications that can be controlled by QuNeo!

FL Studio 11
FL Studio is one of the most widely used music production software applications. The recent release FL Studio 11 by Image-Line Software includes native support for QuNeo and a new Performance mode for clip-launching.

"Image-Line is happy to include QuNeo as a supported MIDI controller in FL Studio," said Image-Line Communications Manager, Scott Fisher. "FL Studio 11's new Performance mode allows QuNeo users to do live triggering of their playlist clips."

QuNeo launching clips in FL Studio 11's new Performance mode.

Reason 7
Reason is a popular and powerful music production studio from Propellerhead Software. Released in April, Reason 7 includes built in control surface support for QuNeo.

“Controlling Reason with QuNeo gives you a different way to approach your music making, and the unique controller offers some really exciting features for interacting with your Reason rack,” said Propellerhead Product Specialist, Mattias Häggström Gerdt.

It's now easier than ever to use QuNeo's X-Y location and pressure sensitive pads to bring expressive levels of performance control to Reason. Each of QuNeo's pads can act as both a keyboard key and a 3-D effects joystick. QuNeo's additional sliders, rotaries and buttons provide even more ways to interact with Reason.

VirtualDJ
VirtualDJ is a popular DJ software application with a large, world-wide user base. In partnership with KMI, Atomix Productions has developed a QuNeo preset and control surface mapping for VirtualDJ which provides a wide range of performance options.

"It was a real pleasure working with QuNeo and the KMI staff to bring such a versatile product to VirtualDJ users, and we look forward to working with other products from Keith McMillen," said Atomix Hardware Development Engineer, Chris Stoll.

Users can scratch, crossfade between decks, alter the tempo of tracks, control loops, filters, effects and key changes, access cue points, and trigger samples. When scratching with QuNeo’s rotaries, looping or hot cue triggering, users can leverage Virtual DJ’s “Slip Mode” which automatically returns the track to the point where it would be if none of these actions had occurred.

Arturia Spark
Arturia's innovative software instruments are a natural fit with QuNeo. In partnership with Arturia, KMI has developed QuNeo control surface mappings and a custom QuNeo preset for Spark, Spark Vintage Drum Machines, Spark DubStep and Spark EDM.

Using QuNeo factory presets, users can play individual pads or drum patterns, perform drum loop manipulation, and control effects. The custom Spark QuNeo preset provides more advanced features like additional effects control, the use of QuNeo’s rotaries, and the ability to activate transport controls from QuNeo.

The biggest challenge was the GUI (Graphical User Interface). Took me about 18 months to get it right.

The capture is done on an Windows XP machine, running an Atari emulator called Steem.

The software is available for free if you want to try it. (Steem is free also by the way)."
