1st Review of I Dream of Wires & Interview with Producer Jason Amm of Solvent

You'll find the full review and interview on Waveformless here.

"Having just finished watching an advance copy of the utterly breathtaking 4 hour 'Hardcore version' of the documentary I Dream of Wires (IDOW) one cannot help but be caught up with the sheer love and passion that flows throughout this film, and be enraptured by this eccentric and obsessive subculture. The film outlines the history of synthesis and electronic music and takes us on a journey from the pioneering work of Moog and Buchla to rise of digital synths and the near-death of monster modular systems. Then onto the movement away from laptops and software and the phenomenal global resurgence of modular systems that we have today."

Kawai K1m + Ableton Live 9

Googlish: "I made in Kawai K1m and Ableton Live9. Sorry for melody of the state as it is a simple as hard as ever chord progression. Rhythm part of Impulse Live9. Other parts are K1m. I had to do Teke Teke Arpeggiator device in Live's arpeggio. Convenient - shin. I do not live to think hard even thought I Na want to change a little the tone in the case of K1, it is necessary to replace the waveform, but it will or interesting to reverse. It is a good brackets appearance in the late 80s really, but when I open the lid for cleaning, in you or was Sukkasuka. By the way, SE entering slightly in the K1m. Moog Sub Phatty Smoother Sounds Demo

Published on Jul 22, 2013 Pete Brown·27 videos

"I was asked on the Gearslutz forums (like below) if the Sub Phatty could do something that is a bit smoother and not quite so aggressive. It's no voyager, but you can get some smoothness out of it. No comments on the playing itself, please. I never said I was a musician :)

Also, I have a cold. Sorry for the heavy breathing into the mic :)

I did this all live on camera, completely dry (no effects or eq). I didn't try to create these patches ahead of time. You can certain do more, especially if you play with the two envelope generators.

Given that it's only two octaves, I can't recommend the Sub Phatty for leads and other similar work. Even for bass, I'd prefer another octave. That said, it's a great sounding synth that is built like a tank. Great knobs, great key action, and a really solid feel.

Here's the Sub Phatty recording I did which prompted this one:"

"100% Sub Phatty (including percussion) with some reverb and delay. Multi-tracked my new Moog Sub Phatty to see what it really sounds like (7 tracks). It's an angry mutha -- not your typical Moog sound, although you can hear it in the roots for sure.

Do yourself a favor and listen with headphones or something with a good bit of low end. That's where the Sub Phatty lives.

If the start of the sweep at the beginning isn't rumbling your gut, download the source file for the full sound. Phatty loses a lot in soundcloud compression because it has so much bottom end."

Modular Workshop at STRØM Copenhagen, Friday August 16

via http://www.stromcph.dk/friday/

"For this workshop we are going old school to explore the analog world, plunging into modular synthesis and general hardware equipment for studio and live usage. Taking a step away from the computer as our main tool – the digital audio workstation (DAW) – towards buttons, knobs patch cables and faders. Modular synths and hardware gear has gained recent attention, with modern musicians showing interest in the hardware realm of music making; when making music was not relying on CPU speed and hard drive space, but on how badass your rig of analog circuit boards and synthesizers was and how many meters of cable you had. Another thing is how you utilize your rig, but that is a different story which you can learn more about throughout the week at the Strøm School. Paul Barker – modular synthesizer and hardware guru as well as founder of DinSync.info which makes modern clones of the good old TB-303, (among other things) – will explain the reason for this while showing some of the pros and cons of utilizing analog hardware to make electronic music. After the workshop, it will be possible to try out the gear that Paul brings along, getting a chance to patch your very first modular synthesizer.

No signup is required, no prior knowledge to modular synthesizers is required and the event is for free."

"There are 3 presets: Piano, Clav and E.P., which can be mixed together (on/off only, not variable level) - there are three sustain modes (gate, decay and release, basically) and a knob for the decay rate. There's a stepped slider for pitch control - you can shift the whole keyboard up to an octave up in semitones - and there's a 6-band EQ. Probably the best sounds use the built-in chorus, which has an on/off switch and rate control.

Interfacing - phones out, high/low mono out, and damper pedal input. Built in speakers."

X1L3 on eBay (RSS)

"Nice set of mods on a Keytar sent to me for a commission make over.

The filter cutoff is located on the neck for playability. Because i couldn't see what i was filming i just guessed where to stand and it ends up out of shot for a lot of the video.
The video starts out with the keytar played over the top of a backing track. The track is a remake of an old commodore 64 game sound track by Rob Hubbard. Always loved the tune and thought it would be fun to do something with it as a demo of a modified instrument.
After the Hubbard tune finishes it's into the noise of cataclysm, with some delay washes, drone, death industrial style noise and glitching.
Rather than apply as many unplayable circuit bends as possible i looked around for the few that don't brick the machine and force you to switch it off and leave it playable when deactivated. Less is more as it were. I then added a drone switch, master pitch control and two additional fx circuits. The synthacon resonant filter and a digital delay."
