John Bowen Solaris - Modulating the Decimator with Envelope Generator

"So I went to GC today to 'test drive' the King Korg to get my free T-Shirt. I was having lots of fun controlling its decimator in real time. I asked the sales person if you could control it from an EG and the reply was 'I don't think so'.

Ah, but you can with the Solaris. Here's a simple patch using the 'Jaws' waveform (supersaw) while I tweak EG2 to modulate the decimator. Not anything super musical, but just a quick demonstration of just a taste of the Solaris' modulation capabilities."

The Garfield Electronics Modulator can program trigger pulse rhythms up to 2 measures synched to 24ppq DIN, 24, 48 or 96ppq phone jack."

Doug Lynner at The Woodshed South Bay - Potential New Synth Venue

Doug Lynner will be performing at The Woodshed in the South Bay, San Jose area with the modular systems pictured.  Mike Dietrich will be covering visuals.  If there's a good enough turn out, the location could be open to future synth performances.  If you are in the area, do your best to show up.  Not only will you get to see some modular gear live with a light show, but you'll be helping the cause.

via Doug on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge:

"I have a very special synth concert coming up on Aug 16th in Los Gatos at The Woodshed. My performance on modular synthesizers, keyboard and guitar will be accompanied by visual artist Mike Dietrich using creative lighting with multidimensional projection mapping and computer-generated images. It is going to be amazing!

This show is also important because there aren't great venues for electronic and experimental music down in the South Bay (San Jose area) and if we can get a decent audience to this night we can open one up for future synthesizer performances.

So, if you are in the area, please join me for sights and sounds! http://www.woodshed.org/ai1ec_event/doug-lynner-synthesizer-man/"

"We are very pleased to announce that we have joined forces with Oram professional audio. We are currently working on the prototype design of a new analogue device, inspired by our circuit bending endeavors over the past five years. We approached Mr. John Oram and Mr. Dave Cherry with a project brief and were invited along to the Analogue barn, where we demonstrated a range of our hand built, modified and circuit bent instruments. The video demonstrates our custom upright Casio MT-100 running, as you can see, through some very high-end Oram equipment. Dave was amazed to learn that there was no additional circuitry inside. Thats all we can reveal at this stage. Watch this Space-Cat!!!"

It is a UK 240v model so will require a step-up transformer for use in countries with 100-110v mains supplies; the UK plug will be removed for overseas deliveries unless otherwise requested (will be left on for USA/Canada/Japan).

RIP George Duke - DreamWeaver

The legendary George Duke has passed away. Pictured here is George with the Clavitar [image via Legacy Recordings]. It was his main instrument when performing live for much of his early career.  It was featured on the album cover "Dream On" released in 1982 (pictured below).

He was very active in the music and synth community and featured numerous times here on MATRIXSYNTH.  He was on the recent NAMM 2013 Panel discussion on MIDI.  He performed in the 2009 Bob Moog Foundation benefit "Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog" (featured here and here).  Below is an image with Michelle Moog-Koussa and the Bob Moog Foundation's comments on his passing.

via wikipedia: "George Duke (January 12, 1946 – August 5, 2013)[2] was a multi-faceted American musician, known as a keyboard pioneer, composer, singer and producer in both jazz and popular mainstream musical genres. He had worked with numerous acclaimed artists as arranger, music director, writer and co-writer, record producer and professor of music. He first made a name for himself with the album The Jean-Luc Ponty Experience with the George Duke Trio. He was known primarily for thirty-odd solo albums as well as for his collaborations with other musicians, particularly Frank Zappa."

You'll find Goerge Duke's official website here: http://www.georgeduke.com.

He had just released a new album "DreamWeavers" dedicated to his late wife who passed away in July, 2012.

"ARTISTS ARE DREAMWEAVERS
We take tangible and intangible elements from the known world and combine them with elements from the spiritual world in order to reach deeper levels of understanding between the two. We spin undeveloped yarn of ideas into reality - it is the ultimate act of creating something from nothing in this world. In short, we are the storytellers and conduits of possibilities. The best of us are those that weave deeper levels of yarn thus giving the fabric more depth. That doesn't necessarily mean that more complexity is better for many times the simplest fabric conveys the strongest meaning. The important thing is intent, message, execution and honesty of design and in that I have always tried to hold my stead. Thus my musical fabric is diverse with multiple levels. That is the way of life and definitely the way I roll, so enjoy the ride … as Cannon used to say - 'Ahoom'.." click here for more.

"We are saddened by the sudden passing of jazz legend George Duke, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family. He was taken too soon. The world needs more people with the kind of big talent and big heart that George shared so generously.

The photo below of Michelle Moog-Koussa and George Duke was taken on November 6, 2009, at the Museum of Making Music during the exhibit "Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog". George performed a benefit concert that evening to an enraptured audience."

OUT OF DEVASTATING PAIN COMES DREAMWEAVER FROM KEYBOARDIST/COMPOSER/ARRANGER/PRODUCER GEORGE DUKE

Out of devastating pain comes DreamWeaver, the new disc, which GRAMMY Award-winning keyboardist/composer/arranger/producer George Duke considers his "most honest album in several years." The making of DreamWeaver occurred after his wife, Corine, passed away. Struck with grief, he found it difficult to work during that period. "I didn't feel like creating any music, which was odd, because normally that's the easiest thing for me to do," he says, "Sometimes, I would walk into the studio and say, 'Nah. It's not going to happen.'"

Duke's mojo returned while on a Capital Cruise. During the first couple of days, he didn't play any music, but did check out some of the other bands. "By the third day, something happened," he remembers. After returning to his cabin around 4 a.m. from listening to music, inspiration ignited. "I went back on the deck and watched the sun come up. A couple of songs started coming to me; I got out my pen and paper, and started writing."

With the assistance of an illustrious cast of musicians that includes bassists Christian McBride and Stanley Clarke; singers Teena Marie, Lalah Hathaway, Rachelle Ferrell, and Jeffrey Osborne; guitarist Paul Jackson, Jr. and the late Jef Lee Johnson; among others, DreamWeaver, set for release July 16, 2013 on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group, finds Duke emphasizing more instrumentals than in the past as well as concentrating more on his mastery on various synthesizers.

Like the bulk of Duke's discography, DreamWeaver accentuates eclecticism with 15 tracks that range from swinging jazz and sweat funk to gospel-inflected pop and sensual R&B ballads. As the title implies, Duke likens mixing all of the idioms to weaving a sonic fabric. He also compares that stylistic dynamism to life. "Everything is in transition -- from hot to cold, from life to death," he philosophizes, "I wanted to incorporate that kind of thing and include a lot of things that are a part of my life."

The disc begins and ends with allusions of nothingness, starting with the title track, a sparse etude, and finishes with "Happy Trails," a misty ballad that was at first just dedicated to Duke's wife, but later gained more emotional poignancy because of the sudden passing of Johnson, whose distinctive guitar work fades out the conclusion. In between, the disc unfolds with the evocative, mid-tempo modern jazz composition, "Stones of Orion," showcasing Duke's crystalline piano improvisations along with longtime collaborator Clarke on upright bass; the feisty 15-minute workout, "Burnt Sausage Jam," a track that Duke refurbished from his 2002 Facing the Music sessions with Johnson, McBride, and drummer Lil' John Roberts; the frisky gangster-leaning groover, "Round the Way Girl;" the feet-friendly burner, "Jazzmatazz;" and the heartfelt ballad, "Missing You," another direct tribute to Duke's wife."

You'll find a number of posts featuring George Duke here. RIP DreamWeaver. You were a true inspiration us all.

Yes you heard right! Don't be left in the dust this summer/fall/winter, sitting at home playing with something digital while all the cool kids in town are waxing glitchy and riding cubic waves of analog squarewave synthiness.

Features built in power supply, secured via the miracle of VELCRO, as well as a battery pack big enough to synth through even the most demanding camping/picnical situations. Onboard speaker, audio output jack, and various knobs and switches conspire to broadcast the impression that this picnic synthesist is not to be trifled with. Excellent aleatronic functionality, when and where it's needed; 24 hours a day, every step of the mile. Includes secret sandwich compartment under secret door covered in pathetic technical scrawlings to deter even the most ravenous reader."

Packaged in a black plywood case (no lid). I bought this in the UK some time ago and was told it was a "prototype" model from EMS, which accounts for the case, however, I do not know whether this is true. It would not be difficult to repackage in the event you want to make a fancier case for it. One of the first multi-effects boxes. IIRC used by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd in "Live at Pompeii." Effects basically include distortion, ring modulation with LFO, octave shift, phase, vibrato, wah and some other things. What's best about it is the interaction effect you can get between the various settings. If you have an AKS or a VCS3 this would make for an interesting outboard combination. Or, if you're into noise, this will create a caterwauling wall of sound. Or if you just want to get some radical guitar effects. Local pick-up in the Los Angeles, CA area welcome."

latest phase of TR 505 project....... With MONOTRON!

Published on Aug 6, 2013 squidfanny·148 videos

squidfanny on eBay (RSS)

"Rusty old TR-505, revived from the dead for an audio experiment.
Inspired by Youtube user Oskar Schölander, this device is an experimental attempt to integrate a MONOTRON directly into a TR-505 drum machine!

How is this possible?

Using pulses from the MPU (big chip inside the 505), and an array of pulse stretchers/inverters, it is possible to trigger the Monotron and generate simple 'Computer Generated BAsslines'....

Take a look at the left side of the machine - can you see all the flashing lights? These lights represent pulses from the 505's MPU and also IC1. They are sent through diodes, to metal bolts. These bolts can then be connected to the Pulse Stretcher / Inverter modules to tweak the signal into something approximating a CV signal, which can then be fed into the Monotron - THUS TRIGGERING IT'S GATE, Pitch CV, FILTER & LFO.

I've also added Individual outputs for the TR505's drums, which can then be mixed into the Monotron's VCF...... Cool, eh?

Mods on the TR-505 include -
* ANALOG BASS DRUM (to replace the original pathetic excuse for a BD).
* Individual tuning for each drum group (courtesy of a cmos 40106).
* GATE Switches to shorten the drum sounds & give the machine more of a modern sound, suitable for faster tempo's.
* Individual Volumes
* Tone control for the snare.
* SEQUENCER GLITCH Mod, to disrupt the drum patterns by pressing buttons & switches.
* GLITCH Boltbay (not shown in demo due to annoying cat)

It's been about 5 years since I last touched this 505, and I'm ashamed to say it's just been sat in the garden shed for all this time, providing a nice home for lots of spiders....

It'll probably never quite end up finished, but it's still fun to play with as a canvas to try out experiments & test bits of DIY circuitry.
Future mods will include PULSE SHORTENERS (as well as pulse stretchers) & Some kind of interesting envelope generator. Possibly even a CMOS arpeggiator?
Monotrons sound pretty crappy compared to decent 'pro' gear, so may add a decent pre-amp / amp / tone circuit at some point too.
Basically the possibilities are endless.......

Watch this space and in another 5 years there may be a new Phase to this project :)

Thanks to Oskar Schölander for providing creative inspiration!
