OTO Biscuit Bit Crusher / Sample Rate Reducer with Der OTO upgrade

"If you like bit-reduction distortion this unit is tops,. You can flip bits on and off via a MIDI sequencer if you are too lazy to push the buttons. Actually nearly all parameters are MIDI controllable.

OTO Machines’ BISCUIT is an 8-bit effect processing hardware from a boutique design firm in Paris. The essential effect is all 8-bit: using 8-bit converters and processing, you can add crunchy, digital waveshaping, delay, pitch shift, and step filter effects. But because those processes produce distortion and aliasing, BISCUIT combines its 8-bit effects with an analog resonant filter. (It’s switchable, so if you want to retain all the artifacts, you can – but you also have a filter at the ready.)

The BISCUIT is also fully MIDI-enabled: every control sends MIDI, and every function receives MIDI CC. Critical to its step-sequenced and delay functions, BISCUIT receives MIDI clock, as well, or you can use tap tempo.

Onboard controls include:
Drive: Input gain, up to +15 dB (which can clip your sound prior to conversion)
Naked: dry signal
Dressed: 8-bit (wet) signal
Filter controls: set to green (low-pass), yellow (band-pass), or orange (hi-pass), then adjust cutoff (20-15kHz) and Q
Brain: changes the function of the rectangular switches at the bottom, between selecting parameters and muting/inverting the 8-bit signal
Clock: 250-30kHz sample clock frequency
Bypass: a true relay bypass
Switches 1-8: mute or invert your 8-bits, select effects and parameters, and recall presets/snapshots

The main issue is that it’s using the 8 rectangular switches along the bottom of the unit that most directly shapes the sound, by allowing you to set each bit independently – literally, the eight bits of the signal itself. Switch off “Brain” mode, and you can directly manipulate the bits of the signal, then mix that signal with your dry source.

The presets portion can incorporate all of your own presets, with 16 slots and SysEx dump functions for storage and recall on your computer.

Metasonix TX-1 Agonizer Special Edition SN43 of 100

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"One used Metasonix TX-1 SE, that's for special edition. With Power Supply and manual (which tells you all about it and yourself!) This is unit 43 of a limited run of only 100 ever made. If you are looking at this you know what it does, but until you own it, you haven't experienced it. It's the shizzle for distortion. You've also been warned that this unit will blow out your speakers if you aren't careful, no kidding! Very low hours on the tubes, hardly used.

The TX-1 is an analog synth module that incorporates a pair of obscure tubes to create a waveshaper supreme. According to the manual, the harshness of the TX-1 is due to the nonlinear quality of the tubes , and the misuse of the tube's beam modulator in particular.

The Strangle knob does what the name implies: at the highest setting, it chokes off the sound — particularly the hum and original tone as if it is fully shortening the duty cycle of a square wave.

The Grind knob controls a feedback loop that creates instability in the beam modulator.

The CV input can be used to control the Pound circuit, which adds further complexity to the distortion. A typical CV with a 10V range can be sent to this jack, and the most interesting results using the signal from an envelope generator

TX-1 can obliterate any sound going though it. The resulting distortion isn't the light, sweet kind you get from a typical fuzz box. Rather, it's thick and intense and threatens to explode.

The TX-1 can be used in a guitar effects chain but works best with line-level source material that is harmonically rich to begin with (electronic percussion and nasty synth tones being the best). By design, its overall behavior is unpredictable. For example, the controls don't change the sound in a linear way: as you turn a knob, the sound may begin to break up nicely, then clear up a bit, then break up in a different way. But if you think having Level, Pound, Strangle, and Grind at their maximum settings will give you the noisiest, most intense sound, guess again.

TX-1 Special Edition has a switchable highpass filter in the circuit, referred to as Suckbass.

There's nothing polite about the sound of the TX-1. If you think you've heard it all, guess again. For truly rough and messed up sounds, the TX-1 SE Agonizer moves to the front of the line..."

Arturia Minibrute & Moogerfoogers Modular Arp

Arturia Minibrute & Moogerfoogers Modular Arp from Vitja Balžalorsky on Vimeo.

"Another interesting rhythm pattern created with Brute's arpeggiator and synced LFO section.
Mf 102 is used as second oscillator, but the tracking is out of tune.
102 is used also for FM oscillator on 101 and Brute's filter.
CP 251 provides the noise source and LFO that is used to blend 101 in and out from time to time.
Interesting results can be achieved when playing with Brute's LFO on VCA and VCF and it's intensity.
Another thing to mention is that arpeggiator is running in triplet mode, but LFO stays straight. With this, you can get some poly grooves and when adding octave and arp's playing mode, you can run this for hours.
For some space there is Ensoniq DP/4 used and Moog 104z."

"This is a small demo from the Roland MKS 7. This module is a Juno 106 in a box ( without the portamento but with vcf / vca velocity ) + the TR 707 12bit drum machine
(11 sounds) + a monophonic bass synth part. The Juno 106 is splitted into a 2 voice
( melody ) and a 4 voice part ( chords ), the chords part missing the noise
generator. The bass part does not have the sub-osc or LFO (why??).
Melody + chords can be combined to form one 6 voice synth. Yes, a strange
architecture, the whorst thing is, that you can't save any patch. There is no user
memory. You can use the Juno 106 as a controller, but it also works with a sysex
midi editor.
As usual a multitrack recording with some external fx. I've mostly used
the melody or the chord parts for all my sounds. The bell is the Yamaha RX 5
drumcomputer."

The CS20M is a dual-oscillator analogue synthesizer with memories (8 of them).

The sound is big, warm and smooth - that great CS filter shines through - flexible enough to cover huge basses (additional subbass sinewave in the VCA section), strong leads and weird percussive effects. This is due in no small part to the envelopes for both the VCA and Filter sections that are switchable between x5 and Normal for additional precision in shaping your sounds.

The CS20M has a super fast LFO with multiple waveforms, that can be changed independently at the destination (S&H at Filter, Pulse at OSC1, etc).

Plus you have a nice set of performance controls to the left of the keyboard, including knobs and sliders that give you additional control over filter cutoff and envelope sustain."

It's a lovely instrument.

This SH-2 is super clean...
plus it was serviced last year for general maintenance:
(brushings, power caps, cleaned, calibrated)
So, it's good to go for a long time...
It's been ultra cared for in my smoke-free, pet-free studio...

I've used it on many recordings and it's sound always brings a smile to my face.
I'm thinning out my studio right now... and really hate to sell, but I need to make
room for a different set up. This awesome synth needs a good home.

so no need for a voltage converter at all."

Spektro Audio CV Toolkit Goes Standalone - Lemur Integration

CV Toolkit (Standalone Version) - Tutorial

Published on Jan 4, 2014

"This video demonstrates how you can use CV Toolkit and a Eurorack modular synthesizer to create a basic sequence / melody.

CV Toolkit is a standalone application that can be used to control modular synthesizers by sending CV signals through any DC-coupled audio interface or Expert Sleeper's module.

The 1.0 version ships with 13 virtual modules that offer different modulation options such as LFO, sequencer, envelope generators, etc.

You can route the output of any of any module to analog outputs, analyzers (LED / Oscilloscope) or even to the input of certain modules (S&H / Biased Switcher / Slew).

Update via Icaro Ferre on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

"Hey everybody! I've just released the standalone version (for both Mac and PC) of the Spektro Audio CV Toolkit software

It ships with 13 virtual modules, 8 analog outputs, routing matrix, native Lemur integration (via OSC), MIDI Clock sync, ScanGraph, Biased Switcher and many other features.

If you haven't heard about it yet, CV Toolkit can be used to control analog synths by sending CV signals through any DC-coupled audio interface or Expert Sleeper's module.

The main idea for CV Toolkit was to make something that could be used together with already existing solutions such as the Expert Sleepers' Silent Way and Motu Volta.

It's available for U$14,99 (introductory price) over at http://spektroaudio.com/cv-toolkit-standalone

Hope you guys have fun this"

Buchla Music Easel Clone by Roman Filippov

Update: The one pictured above was built by Dave Brown of Modular Synthesis.

via An Inaudible Hum

"If and when BEMI finally makes the Music Easel a readily available item instead of a series of teasers, this clone certainly serves as a fine substitute. While in vintage form this four-paneled monster was called the "Stored Program Sound Source" (due to plug-in sound storage/retrieval cards), it is primary known today as the functional guts of the Buchla Music Easel. The heart of this instrument is its combination of complex and modulation oscillators with pulse, CV (sequencer & random "control"), and filter combinations allowing even more timbral, pitch, waveshape and rhythmic push/pull. That the 208 is without a keyboard is small loss to noise-heads whose distain for pitch is legendary. You may want to try the Keith McMillen QuNexus keyboard as another trigger source to add to the 208. It couldn't hurt, or could it? The 208 is available from Roman via Russian Post."  208r

Published on Jan 6, 2014 Robert Tubb·5 videos

"Demo of Sonic Zoom for CMJ article: this version was used for the pilot study, the final release was somewhat different."

iTunes: Sonic Zoom - Robert Tubb - the app is currently free.

"Sonic Zoom is a PhD research project from Queen Mary University. The app aims to look at how people interact with music synthesisers: how they adjust parameters and explore the vast range of sounds on offer.

There are two interfaces presented. The first is fairly standard: ten sliders that control each parameter. The second is more novel: a two-dimensional surface that can be scrolled and zoomed similar to a map. Every sound that can be made with the synth is located somewhere on this surface. If you find a sound you like, you can zoom in on it to explore smaller variations. You can save a sound and this will drop a marker on the surface. These markers are easy to revisit and can be smoothly interpolated between. Your path through the sound space is visible, so you can retrace your steps.

The first 15 minutes is a timed experiment. Users will then be asked to complete a quick questionnaire. After this you are free to use the app, and a few extra features will be unlocked as a reward."

Moog Circuit Bending Challenge 2014 - 'Haxxor Amstrad Synthesizer' (by Dave Bradbury)

Published on Jan 6, 2014 HAXXOR AUDIO·39 videos

"This is the first of three vids documenting my Haxxed & Circuit Bent AMSTRAD CKX100 - My entry to the Moog Circuit Bending Challenge 2014...

Part 1 shows the machine in all it's glory as a sinister 8-bit Chord Organ, a LO-FI Vintage style Arpeggiator & a complex, deeply fascinating Glitch noise generator.

It loves to make dark, lucid psychedelic tones, Ultra-harmonic drones, de-tuned spectral chords and 8-bit granular noise (it can also still function as a cheesy 1988 pop synth if required).

Beats are coming from the Monotribe, which is synced to the Amstrad via it's Step-Sequencer / Arpeggiator clock.

It's not been easy, but the parts list is now down to less than $70 :)
The machine is powered by a 9volt DC adapter.

Part 2 - Coming Soon..."
