The Bob Moog Foundation Announces Significant Archive Additions

"Anaheim, CA (January 23, 2014) – Michelle Moog-Koussa, executive director of the Bob Moog Foundation™ (BMF) and daughter of inventor Bob Moog, today announced additions to the Asheville-based foundation’s archives including over 1,000 schematic drawings from 1965 to 1985; several rare prototypes, including a Moog Apollo synthesizer (the Apollo became the prototype for the Polymoog), the Moog Liberation, the Moog 1130 Drum Controller, Moog Sequencer, Moog Song Producer, and Moog Feedback Suppressor; as well as production models of the Minitmoog, and a Moog Vocoder. The announcement was made on the first day of NAMM, an annual gathering of the music manufacturing industry, which attracts 100,000 people over the weekend.

'These instruments and drawings join our growing collection of treasures that includes, among other items, Roger Powell’s custom dual-keyboard controller, designed by Bob; a duophonic Minimoog; and two vintage theremins. We are thrilled with the ongoing interest our archives are generating from organizations and individuals,' Moog-Koussa said. These additions to the BMF’s collection of historic documents and musical instruments come on the heels of the BMF’s receipt of a permanent loan of vintage instruments by the Music Department of University of North Carolina at Greensboro in December 2013.

Moog-Koussa said that 400 of the more than 1,000 documents received in this latest contribution have already been inventoried and entered into a searchable database.

'But that’s just the beginning,' she said. 'We will soon begin the most detailed, formalized and time-consuming part of the archiving process – cataloguing. It takes time to do it right, and these materials are too important not to do it right.'

She anticipates that the cataloguing process will take between 12 and 18 months to complete. After that, the documents will be scanned and the most significant of them shared.

'Creating a wide-ranging collection that includes not only his work, but also the work of those he influenced is the goal of the Bob Moog Foundation. It is from this perspective that we can achieve the truest picture of his life’s work and ultimately appreciate his contributions to science and music,' she said.

'Bob was generous with his talent and knowledge; inspiring others fueled his own creativity,' Moog-Koussa said. 'We are doing that every day at BMF, just a little differently.'

Moog-Koussa points to the work of Dr. Bob’s Sound School™ (DBSS) as an example of BMF’s ongoing outreach and education that is an important part of her father’s legacy. The 10- week curriculum teaches second-grade students the physics of sound using acoustic and electronic musical instruments such as the theremin, as well as oscilloscopes. The information taught through the musical instruments is supplemented by custom educational materials developed by the BMF educational team. 'Bob was a life-long learner. He never stopped asking ‘what if’ and wanted others to ask the same question. I can’t think of a better tribute to his life and work than encouraging a new generation to ask the same question.'

The Bob Moog Foundation, based in Asheville, N.C., continues Bob Moog’s legacy of innovation through education and outreach programs that promote the intersection of music, science, history, and imagination.

The Bob Moog Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity, and is independent from, not affiliated with and not supported by Moog Music, Inc."

Laurentide SynthWorks PolyLAB Update

via Laurentide SynthWorks

"List of things competed:

Prototype Case built
LFO, S&H, Globals PCB, Saw2Tri, Midi2CV, Power Supply & Transformer all mounted
Globals Panel Prototype built
MIDIpal LCD and Encoder installed and mounted to Globals Panel
To Do:
Wire it up!
I built a quick-and-dirty power buss board, but I did order a PCB. Just waiting for that and 1 10k Pot for Voice 2 Resonance. I ended up going with the Midimplant MIDI2CV with a MIDIpal for the dispatch to achieve poly. The nice thing about the Midimplant is 1 board has 2 independent midi2cv's. Each can be assigned a MIDI channel and have their own V/Oct & Gate. Wish I had read the spec more clearly before I ordered a 2nd one. Guess one can never have too many midid2cv's.

Hopefully 1 more month and the prototype will be complete! Then, this spring I'll try my hand at bending aluminum."

New Waldorf 2 Pole Filter & Moog Theremini

via Create Digital Music

"Waldorf’s mystery knob is the filter control from a big filter in a box.
That’s right, Waldorf is introducing a 2-pole filter. And one heck of a 2-pole filter it is:
Filter with cutoff and resonance, but also a Drive setting, Rectify, and switchable between low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass
LFO with Depth and Speed
LFO set to Fast, Slow, and (hilariously) Gemütlich (kinda hard to translate, actually easy-going and slower than slow)
Envelope controls: Attack/Decay/Hold, threshold, a source (hard to tell what that does), and trigger.
And it takes CV for envelope, cutoff, and gate, with jack plugs for input and output."

"Then there’s Moog, who are introducing, as rumored, a new Theremin. And this isn’t just any Theremin: it’s a Theremin that can assist you in keeping things in tune, all whilst looking like a space-age egg from Woody Allen’s Sleeper.
It’s a Theremin with presets. Crazy presets.
It’s a digital instrument with Theremin-style controls. (Readers who speculated, you guessed right.) It’ll upset purists, perhaps, but this is rather cool: it’s based on the unique-sounding Animoog sound engine.
The synth is digital, but the input is analog: classic heterodyning style, then digitized as control signal for the engine. Onboard MIDI, CV output (presumably pre-digitization, in fact), and USB. But that engine gives you more different ways to play.
Yes, there’s a display, scale and root controls, a Presets knob, plus built-in delay. There’s a built-in speaker and headphone jack, as well, for convenience.
Price: US$299 estimated is what we heard on the floor..."

Full post with additional details at CDM here.

Update Image & details via Moog Music, also via radiate sky in the comments:

"The Theremini is a re-imagination of one of the oldest electronic musical instrument in history, and Bob Moog’s first love – the theremin. Its design fuses the experience of performing with an instrument you don’t actually touch, with a powerful sound engine derived from Moog’s award winning synthesizer, Animoog. The Theremini guarantees immediate success to any player at any skill level, while providing new ways to experiment with music, education, and gestural control.

Assistive pitch correction allows each player to adjust the instruments level of playing difficulty. At the maximum position, the Theremini will play every note in a selected scale perfectly, making it impossible to play a wrong note. As this control is decreased, more expressive control of pitch becomes possible. When set to minimum, the Theremini will perform as a traditional theremin with analog heterodyning oscillator and absolutely no pitch assistance.

A built in tuner supplies real-time visual feedback of each note as it is played, as well as its proximity to perfection. This is useful for correcting a users playing position, or to educate younger players about pitch and scales.

The presets section allows you to select from 32 wave or wavetable-based patches, store a selected scale & root note, set and recall a specified playing range, and specify per-patch settings for the included stereo delay.

Recessed in the top of the Theremini is a compact speaker perfect for private rehearsal and quick setup anywhere. Silent rehearsal is also possible via front panel headphone jack. Simply plug in ear-buds or headphones and the built in speaker becomes silent.

For live performance and gestural control, the rear panel features two line level audio outputs, a pitch CV output with selectable range, and a mini USB jack for MIDI I/O and connectivity.
