Theatre - 1980's Prog Rock Featuring John L Rice

"Recorded live at Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA in 1983..."

Those who have been following MATRIXSYNTH for some time should be familiar with John L Rice from his numerous modular videos. John is well respected in the modular synth community and has presented for Moon Modular at NAMM. Like many musicians his skills cross other instruments. In this case he was the drummer for a relatively unknown band Theatre in the late 70s and early 80s.

According to John: "Locust was one of our most popular pieces and was always instrumental only. This version is a little slower than we usually played it. Back in the late 70’s and the first half of the 80’s I was in a progressive rock band called THEATRE. At best we only performed live a couple times a year . . for free (no one wanted to hear original prog rock in the heydays of disco, punk and new wave ) We rehearsed one to four times a week for many years though and had a few personnel changes over time. I played drums and percussion but on a couple songs I played keyboards . . although crappily ;-) Let me see . . . piano on Sfear (there is video proof! ;-), Synergy on another and Minimoog D or Moog Source on another . . .forgetting song titles in my old age ;-)

Here is the THEATRE channel, many videos are just rehearsal boom-box recordings with one too many still shots, some are good quality studio recordings and a few were shot at the Evergreen University video studio. Be prepared for poor quality recordings and many rough edges! ;-)"

"Creating a track from scratch. loaded up the OT with samples and just pick random samples to create the beats. Tetra and Dark Energy are also being sequenced on the fly. I have the CC's on the Octatrack tied to the filter and resonance on the Tetra and also the filter on the Dark Energy so I can P-lock the filter knob using just the Octatrack. Lotsa fun.

Recorded straight to the Zoom H4 into Logic with compression and a bit of EQ added."

"Hi !

This is the 4 bricks rook prototype.

It s a 4 tracks trigger sequencer allowing you to record your patterns live with the buttons or to load sequences from tables.

There s 8 tables containing 4 tracks trig sequences

Pattern length can be adjusted (1,2,3,4,6,8,12,16,24,32 steps) by turning the length potentiometer. If your pattern is eigth step long, you are dividing the total sequence by 4, so you got four eigth steps long patterns. The eigth step long pattern you re playing is defined by the Shift Potentiometer and the Shift CV input.

In playing mode, buttons can be used as track mute.

Finally, there s two sequences, A and B which can be accessed by the AB switch. If you record on A, you also write the same sequence on B. But recording a sequence on B won t change your A sequence.

Furthermore, if you record a less then 32 steps steps long sequence on A, it will be duplicated to cover the 32 steps of B.

"A handy little interface to allow your Elektron Analog Four to control your Euro modular or other CV Gate equipped synth.

You can plug this box into either of the A/B or C/D sockets, to give 2 3.5mm sockets compatible with Euro, Frac, Vintage Roland, Korg MS20 mini, or any other system that uses 3.5mm CV/Gate connections. If you want to use all 4 of the Analog Four outputs simply buy 2!

Built into a sturdy ABS box and using Van Damme cable, with high quality connectors. It has a gold plated 6.35mm TRS plug to ensure good electrical conductivity with the gold plated socket on the Analog Four, and on the box there are 2 3.5mm TS sockets chosen for compatibility with a wide range of jack plugs, and for their durability.

The cable is approx 50cm so that the box can be placed at either side of your Analog Four with room to spare, if needed a TRS extension cable could be used provided the total length is less than around 3m, to ensure accurate tuning. The sticker on the top has labelling for each of the 3.5mm sockets."
