CGS735 Synthacon Filter Calibration v1

Published on May 25, 2014 Randy Piscione·18 videos

"First mistake in the video, the d:machinery Red LFO is providing a random source, not a sample and hold. I bought this filter used and found the resonance kinda crazy (which apparently is normal) so I decided to calibrate it. That didn't go too well so I started experimenting and here's the result. I have no idea if this is what the filter is supposed to sound like but it is so different from anything else I have, it should be fun."

Only one previous d:machinery post here. Plenty of CGS and Steiner Parker posts. The filter in this video is the filter in the Arturia MiniBrute and MicroBrute. The MiniBrute and MicroBrute were designed by Yves Usson who implemented the Steiner filter in his DIY designs.

via the seller: "The story behind this mini is a buddy of mine bought it in the mid 80s when everyone was dumping their analog synths and annoying us with DX7s. This one was really beat up, so he painted all the wood flat black. Our studio picked it up from him in the early 90s. Everything works as it should, with a tiny amount of dust on a couple of the pots. The main flaw are the keys themselves - most are heavily yellowed except the ones that have been replaced, and there's a nice cigarette burn on one key. This thing has been around, but all the keys work just fine.

I believe the red button by the mod wheels is a modification. You can watch the boy demo it in the video. Overall, a great minimoog at a good price."

TRASH_AUDIO SYNTH MEET 14 Muff Wiggler Event, Portland Oregon Pics via MATRIXSYNTH

[Click here if you don't see the slideshow.]
My set of pics from the event. A funny side note is that this is the first synth event I've been to where I didn't hear a single synth sound. No joke. The event was held at the new Muff Wiggler store front, and it was jam packed with both people and gear, so understandably everything was hooked up to headphones so people wouldn't drown each other out. I was planning to check out the gear and take some direct audio video but I ended up spending the entire time chatting with people. I do have to say, that actually is the best part of events like these for me. You get to meet people you only know online face to face. You get to talk shop and just about life in general with like minded individuals. The gear is great, but it's the people that actually make the event. If you ever have a chance to go to a synth meet, do it. You won't regret it. That said, enjoy the pics and see if you spot anything you haven't seen before. The pics always speak for themselves. MATRIXSYNTH is a log of everything synth in the synth community and events like these are a reflection of not only the current scene, but the venue. This was a TRASH_AUDIO event for the grand opening of the new Muff Wiggler storefront in Portland Oregon. As you can see, eurorack dominated. It's crazy to think that when I started this incarnation of MATRIXSYNTH back in 2005 (1st incarnation started back in 1997), eurorack was pretty much limited to Doepfer, Analogue Systems, and Analogue Solutions. Modcan/Cynthia, Moog/Synthesizers.com, and MOTM 5U dominated with Serge Transform Systems and Wiard format. The new Buchla 200e just launched and posts featuring them were few and far in between. Buchla bongos and banjos were a bit of a synth meme back then. That said, everything you see here is relatively new in the world of synths. The number of eurorack manufactures has skyrocketed. You can see a list of the new manufacturers of 2013 in my 2013 New Years post here. I've been tracking new manufactures this year as well, and the current count is 66. Not all eurorack, but most are. I believe the oldest synth at the event was the PMS Syntar from George Mattson who currently runs Mattson Mini Modular. Kudos goes to Division 6 for the full on synth bling Vegas style signage.

HUGE THANKS TO TRASH_AUDIO and specifically Surachai for making these events happen!

Uploaded on Jan 7, 2007 Denkitribe's channel·79 videos

"MFB-SYNTH LITE II is a little monophonic synthesizer from Berlin. I like this sweet little box, but also I found some bad points.

Good points: It has a very analog-ish sound character (although it uses digital oscillators). Suboscillator and ring modulator give it much complexity. It offers not only warm sounds but also fat and dirty sounds.

It has an intuitive interface in spite of its small size. I think it is well designed "as it should be".

Bad points: In fact, LITE II is not a reliable product. Its built-in step sequencer has many flaws. Overall sound quality is not good (there is noticeable amount of noise). OSC-sync and PWM don't work right."

Roland Super JX Upgrade by Vecoven & Protoype 16 x M64c Cartridge Memory Bank by Guy Wilkinson

This one in via Guy Wilkinson on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge. That's his JX-10 pictured to the left.

Guy on the upgrade: "It is simply brilliant. I thought all the switches were "end of life" and bought new, but this total rewrite fixed it because the tasks all run more efficiently and snappier, sysex is fixed totally but is not compatible with the old style midi dump, so I protyped a "super cartridge" loaded using old sw then switched to Freds and dumped out all out to cakewalk. Sysex now is quick & seamless from your DAW. There is an ipad PG800 app that works with it too using the mks70 setting. Makes the instrument feel "finished", it took him a long time to rewrite and is working on other stuff, one of which is the PWM modification, extensive voice card rewire but should really unleash the JX/MKS70. Other great features he implemented are arpeggiator instead of sequencer and assignment of any parameter to the controller sliders......nice"

Details via vecoven.com:

"In a nutshell, the rewrite provides:

New midi implementation

- each parameter is now OFF/RECV/SEND/ON, allowing fine control of what gets sent and what is filtered.

- sysex support : allow edition of patch, tone A and tone B individually. (No need for M64 cartridge)

- fast bulk dump/load : 4-5 seconds to dump everything. Can dump to/from cartridge and internal memory.

- edition of parameters (patch and tones) sends sysex, so all editions can be sequenced. PG800 is also supported here, so editions made from the PG800 can also be sequenced.

- copy from/to cartridge to create a full backup of the internal memory (all settings are now copied to the cartridge or restored from it)

Controls C1 and C2 enhancements

- any tone parameter can be assigned to C1 or C2
- any arpeggiator parameter can be assigned to C1 or C2
- C1 and C2 can be used, in tone edit mode, to modify upper/lower tone parameter. This allows quick editing of - tones for those who don’t have a PG800.

Arpeggiator (JX10 only)

- 8 arpeggiators 'patches'

- internal or external synchronization

- supports up, down up/down, played and random notes ordering

- various arpeggio types

- velocity setting (fixed or played)

- note duration (1-15 or legato)

- use lower split point to control which notes are arpeggiated

PG800 support
New display options
- control whether updates from sysex, pg800 or controllers are displayed temporarily on-screen

Compatibility mode
- allows to disable new features for full compatibility with old software (for example, sysex changes made to tone A can be redirected to the currently selected tone, etc...)

Test modes
- test hardware controllers (voices, A/D controllers (aftertouch, bender, C1/C2), keyboard)

- test memory chips

For MKS70 owners, please note that the MONO mode (one voice per midi channel) is NOT SUPPORTED in this release."

New Audio Damage Sequencer 1 - Eurorack Format

Saw this one at the TRASH_AUDIO / Muff event yesterday. I have some pics that will go up later today. It was the one module that seriously caught my eye at the event.

Details / repost via Analog Industries:

"We unveiled this module this morning at the Muff Wiggler / Trash_Audio synth meet in Portland, and here's some info on Sequencer 1.

The astute among you will notice a passing similarity to the Elektron Analog Four, and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, we're flattering the fuck out of those guys with this little bitch. Here's some vital statistics:

• 36HP, 20mm depth.

• 4 banks of 16 patterns, each pattern can be from 1 to 64 steps long. The entire state (all banks and patterns) can be saved to SD card as a preset, so the memory is essentially unlimited.

• Clock input can be per step (like any other sequencer's clock), or 24ppq or 48ppq for DIN sync (via a simple 5-pin DIN -> 3.5mm adaptor). Clock output can be a staggering number of choices, which is handy if the unit is acting as the master clock. The Run input can be operated a couple different ways, as can the output. In short, it can interface to pretty much anything clockish, and can in turn drive pretty much anything in a clocklike fashion.

• Each step gets a 1v/Oct output, three CV outputs (that can each be either 0-10v, -5 to +5v, or 0 to +5v), a main gate output, and an auxiliary gate output. Gate length is programmable per step.

• The playback modes are forward, reverse, pingpong, pingpong with double end triggers, skip forward, walk, and random. This is programmable per pattern.

• There are several ratcheting features; you can program a ratchet of various lengths per step, or you'll note the 6 buttons labeled "REP." These will repeat, in order, the last 8, 4, 2, or 1 steps as a loop, or cause the step you hit them on to repeat in half or quarter time. (In the same manner that the MIDI triggers in Replicant work, basically, if you own that plugin.)

• As I hinted before, SD card for storage and OS updates.

There are many other deep features that I'm not able to talk about at this point. Our goal is to make the single most sophisticated sequencer available for Euro, and I think we've accomplished this already, let alone what we're adding as we go along. We haven't finalized pricing yet, or availability. We're hoping for US$599.00, and about two months. But both those numbers are subject to change."

Bleep Labs Pico Paso + Bit Blob Jr. = Pasbit Blopic

Published on May 25, 2014 ISOTROPOSPHERE·128 videos

"Bleep Labs Pico Paso kit and Bit Blob Junior kit housed in an old external cd rom drive case, custom.

Dual flashing LED kit from Quality Kits.

This project took almost a month with different stages of building the kits and planning the final look within the case. I cannot believe that it all fits inside there, it took me almost an entire week of re-working wires and connections to reduce it down to fit.

I know, way too much time and effort for a 25 dollar and 60 dollar kit, right? I enjoy the benefit of the enhanced look but most of all the ergonomics and useability of the kits for a performance setting. It's mine though, you'll never see another one like it and I don't intend on selling it.

The main outputs for the Pico Paso and the BB Jr. are coming out the right side of the case where the huge connector cable used to reside. This is in the top right of the video and you can see the two cables there. The PP is a mono 1/4 inch and the BB is a mono 1/8 inch. The outputs are located to the right, underneath the Marine Corp. coin which was added for grip when inserting cables and to match the military grade connectors.

The PP has additional outputs for the square waves from each oscillator, I have added jacks for these. The main outs are triangle waves. I have also taken advantage of the additional LED outputs on the BB versus a stock build. Custom bases for the light sensors for the BB, custom keyboard mouse tops for the BB buttons, painted PP hardware, identification markings on the military connectors for patching. Custom LED stalks with knurled brass and chrome surrounds.

I am patching the Pico Paso through a Synthrotek Echo module as well as a little raw for a spell. The Bit Blob Jr. has no effects on it and is raw to the mixer."

http://www.synthe-modulaire.com

Le but de test est d'analyser l'effet de résonance des différentes versions d'un filtre.basé sur 3 ou 4 pôles et de les corriger afin de réaliser un filtre aux caractéristiques proches de celles du VCF du VCS3.

Merci

New tests

I modified since yesterday the resonance following the recordings of albedo039.

This is a test of the future Kx-Synth-x16 release (V5). It is not provided yet. This test uses a Scot Solida recording (KVR member) done with an old VCS3 and also those of albedo039.

By this kind of test I want to collect some good VCS3 recordings for improve and to know what exactly I must do to improve my work. I need solid references.
The target of this test is to analyze the resonance and to build a filter close of the original.
