Inventor and Berkeley's Director of CNMAT, David Wessel, Has Passed Away

David Wessel, Berkley's director of the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies, has passed away.  There will be an open house on Friday, October 17, from 1PM - 6PM for those that want to pay their respects. You can find details here.  People are also leaving their condolences on his Facebook Page here.

For those not familiar with David Wessel, there is a great interview with him on the Cycling 74 website from 1999 here.  From that interview:

"David Wessel is Professor of Music at the University of California, Berkeley where he directs the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT). Wessel worked at IRCAM between 1979 and 1988; his activities there included starting the department where Miller Puckette first began working on Max on a Macintosh. Since Wessel’s arrival in Berkeley over ten years ago, CNMAT has been actively involved in teaching Max/MSP as well as developing freely available Max-based software projects. In this 1999 interview with Gregory Taylor, Wessel talks about his musical background, his relationship with French composer and IRCAM founder Pierre Boulez, the origins of Max, and some perspectives on his current work."

Pictured and in the video below is David with his relatively new SLABS instrument and controller.  The instrument has been mentioned here on MATRIXSYNTH.  In 2011 he showed the instrument with the Eigenharp and Roger Linn's Linnstrument prototype at an event in San Francisco.

Doepfer A-100 Eurorack Analog Modular Synthesizer with Extras

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Comes with a binder of the owner's manual.

"This is the perfect Eurorack synthesizer for anyone who wants to get into the world of analog modular synthesis. I purchased this Eurorack roughly six months ago from Analogue Haven, and it is in pristine condition. I have been the only user to ever touch it, and I have cared for it like a priest cares for a holy object. It has never traveled anywhere and never ever been outdoors, and it's been kept in a ventilated space that's never gone above 76 degrees or below 60 degrees Farenheit. I designed this rack to be both MIDI-capable, so that you can seamlessly integrate this with your DAWs (Ableton, Cubase, Pro Tools, etc.), midi controllers, and all other midi-capable equipment. Also, it has both consumer and professional line outs (+4dBu for left and right) in 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch or 3.5mm for an easy signal path straight to any mixer, audio interface (ADC), speakers, or amplifier. It's as easy to plug in as an electric guitar!

And speaking of cables, it comes with 64, fully functioning 3.5mm (1/8 inch) high-quality patch cables.

Although this analog modular synthesizer is perfect for entry-level musicians and sound designers, it is by no means limited. This has every vital module that is required to experiment, compose, and produce music utilizing the most important and powerful aspects of analog synthesis. While a full listing of modules can be found below, major components include dual oscillators, dual ADSR envelope generators, dual filters, dual ring modulators, dual amplifiers, dual mixers, dual LFOs, dual sequencers (yes, that's right), dual buffered multiples, a dual quantizer, and a dual delay. For a further in-depth visual guide to all the modules and the entire rack, google the ModularGRID website. Once there, search 'first doepfer A-100' and you can see this rack's profile.

REASON FOR SELLING: Life circumstances have forced me to journey someplace far, far away, and I cannot take my beloved synthesizer with me. This is painful moment and I would never sell this if I didn't have to. This is a perfect piece of musical machinery, and anyone who buys it will be very lucky."

Groovesizer TB2 - Preview

Published on Oct 14, 2014 MoShang

"http://groovesizer.com The Groovesizer TB2 is a synthesizer shield for the Arduino Due. The TB2 is a 4 note paraphonic wavetable synth with (digital) filter, envelope and LFO. In addition to the built-in wave shapes (sine, triangle, saw, square, noise), additional wave shapes can be loaded from SD card. For sound generation, it makes use of the two 12-bit DACs built into the Due's ATSAM3X8E processor (output is mono in the current configuration, but stereo operation is also possible). The TB2 will be available in kit form (ETA December 2014)."

"robotic feedback sound object

The system longs to achieve a state of the permanence of sound, but can not save its state. More precisely, this dynamical system is defined by a solid torus, and for each iteration its angular coordinate doubles its value; thus the exponential divergence of trajectories and chaotic dynamics automatically arises from that. It is arranged as an (uncountable) massive of "threads" that reel around the solid torus.

"The original Fairlight CMIs were renowned not only for their superb sound quality, but also their elegant and intuitive software. The CMI-30A combines the very best features of the Fairlight series IIX and the III, with significant new developments. Sound quality is continuously variable using the unique "goodness" control which spans from Series I, II, or III quality to "best possible" 36-bit floating point. The base 30A system offers 24 tracks and channels,which will be optionally expandable to 200 (details to be confirmed). Software upgrades will also be available to provide full post-production, mixing and recording functionality. Software functionality is being finalised at the time of publication. Please refer to fairlightinstruments.com.au for updates as development continues towards the release version.

Specifications
The CMI-30A is unique in that it offers the classic Fairlight sound that defined music of the eighties, as well as the modern Fairlight sound - that of uncompromising signal purity. Both these extremes are made possible by the extraordinary processing power of the Crystal Core engine which lies at the heart of the system. The Crystal Core media processor (CC-1) was developed byFairlight.AU as the engine for its range of high-end digital audio workstations. The CC-1 uses FGPA (fieldprogrammable gate array) to achieve performance far in excess of what can be achieved using even the fastest digital signal processor of conventional design.

Mutable Instruments to Ramp Down DIY

via Mutable Instruments

"Please take the time to read this...

After careful considerations, I have decided to progressively ramp down the production of most of Mutable Instruments’ DIY line.

=== The reasons ===
* Some of these products are getting old and/or are not as successful as I thought they would be, and it doesn’t make much sense to keep them in inventory when only a couple units are sold in a month - while their price has been decided at a time they were produced in batches of 100s.
* There’s little overlap in the way Mutable Instruments’ as a maker of modules, and Mutable Instruments’ as a maker of DIY kits operate; to the point that it really feels like I’m running two companies; dealing with two groups of suppliers, two ways of managing accounting or keeping track of stock etc. Some decisions related to growth (small things like formalizing procedures through software, or big things like relocating or hiring…) can’t really be done in a way that would serve both missions. I have reached a size at which a choice must be made, and the ratio of things I like to do / annoyances is higher when it comes to the kit business.
* I no longer agree with some of the design decisions (be they aesthetic or technical) defining these products. It just feels wrong to me to sell products I would not personally buy.
* I’d like to explore a few (non-music and/or non-electronics and/or non-DIY) projects and I badly need to make room in my life for that.

=== The consequences ===
I do not plan to produce new batches of the following products:
* MIDIpal. There are currently 55 units left in stock. I’m keeping a small stash to serve warranty requests. As time passes, I’ll get rid of them (without warranty).
* Shruthi XT kits. There are currently about 50 kits left in stock.
* Anushri (as a kit and as a PCB set). There are currently about 100 kits left in stock. I only have 40 Euro panel sets, so I might do a small run of them to prevent the last kits from being sold naked.
* Shruthi filter boards. I have in stock (or on order for the Polivoks and Yellow magic) about 50 pairs of filter boards. The digital filter board is already out of production.
* Ambika (as a kit and as bare PCBs). I currently have 50 kits being sorted, which will be available as a bundle with Adrian’s case in november or early december. I still have a big stash of PCBs – so this one will take more time to disappear.

I do plan to produce new batches of the following products:
* Shruthi kit. There’s really nothing quite like this little beast. I might narrow it down to one or two flavors (like vanilla = kit+plexi case and vanilla-caramel-choco-chips-cookie-dough = 4PM kit + metal case).
The fate of the following products is unknown:
* CVpal.
* Module tester.

=== And after that? ===
Some of you might want to organize small community-runs of PCBs to keep one of these products alive – just as it has been done for the Sidekick. I’m fine with that, but obviously I won’t provide any support.

Keeping the DIY line alive through a commercial initiative is something that requires more thought. If this happens, and I am currently exploring several paths for this to happen, this has to be done in a way that does not involve the Mutable Instruments name, or only as a sort of quote or tribute."

I recorded straight out of the desk onto a Sony M-10 field recorder, no extra processing apart from the hardware. So much fun to play! Hope you like it."

Rare Waldorf Microwave 1 *limited edition* Mean Green Machine SN 28 9433363

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is your chance to own the very limited edition Waldorf Microwave 1 "Mean Green Machine" with original certificate of authenticity.

The last 99 Microwaves manufactured by Waldorf were released as this special edition Mean Green Machine. Running OS version 2.0, this was the latest and greatest of the Waldorf Microwave 1 models. This unit has been fully tested and sounds wonderful with its warm Curtis 3387 analog filters. As you can see by the certificate, this particular unit is number 28 of 99.

The Waldorf Microwave is an 8-voice wavetable synthesizer with 8 analog filters and amplifiers. The 8 voices can be used in multimode where individual MIDI channels can be assigned to different sounds, and has 4 individual outputs as well as a stereo outputs. Wolfgang Palm (of PPG fame) developed the custom ASIC (Wavetable chip) used in the Microwave. This is wavetable synthesis at its best with 2 oscillators, analog 24db LP filter, analog amplifiers with panning, 4 envelopes, 2 LFOs, and extremely flexible modulation routings.

As you can see in the pictures, this unit has a small scratch above the LCD, and, as is typical with the Nextel paint used by Waldorf, some minor paint wear along the top and bottom edges where the unit was installed in a rack."
