"Just like Heaven" by The Cure Cover

Published on Nov 14, 2014 synthartist69

Cool to see a Roland Jupiter-6 in this one. You should recognize the name synthartist69 from previous posts here on MATRIXSYNTH.

"Here is a video of some friends and I recording our version of 'Just like Heaven' by The Cure. We all three used to play together in high school and decided to reunite a couple of months ago to do an 80's reunion. It's such a great pleasure to play with these guys after 27 years. Being in a band with great friends, rather than just other musicians, means everything to me! I played drums and obviously keyboards on this recording, and covered all backing vocals. Drums used were a Roland TD20SX set. Recorded using a Yamaha AW4416 Digital Recorder. We are 'A Buck Twenty-Five'.

Ununseptium Warehouse Eurotron Delay - Eurorack Modified Korg Monotron Delay

Published on Nov 14, 2014 Unun Septium

"Korg Monotron Delay 'Eurofied' and sequenced by a Verbos Voltage Multistage, processing a Roland TR-626"

via Ununseptium Warehouse where you'll find additional pics & build notes.

"It's not a difficult mod, but not everything does exactly what you'd think it might. I added inputs for 'Pitch', 'Gate', Filter Cut Off and LFO rate plus an output for the Oscillator. I also converted the annoying stereo aux in and headphones out into regular mono so they connect easily to other modules or other mono outboard gear. The final thing was to change the power supply from battery to 5V Eurorack.

'Pitch' and 'Gate' have inverted commas for good reason. Although there's a solder pad on the pcb marked 'Pitch', it doesn't really allow the oscillator pitch to be controlled by 1V/Oct CV, as one might expect. There's probably some elaborate way of making this happen, but that's clearly beyond my ken. However, I did find it responded to the volts coming out of my home made Velleman LED sequencer. I can't really say I know what it's doing, but it does something and that's enough to warrant giving it its own jack socket. 'Gate', on the other hand, does more than it promises. Sending CV to this, from the MiniBrute keyboard or the Verbos Voltage MultiStage, gives a response from the oscillator pitch and its gate. It doesn't really track in any meaningful musical sense, but using a sequencer or arpeggiator means simple melodic patterns can be created."

Plankton Electronics Releases The Earwig Rectifying Mixer Eurorack Module

via Plankton Electronics

"The Earwig is a rectifying mixer. The core of each channel are two half wave rectifiers and one full wave rectifier. There is also gain, pre and post-rectifier bias and an inverter amp. 2 CV bias inputs are provided to modulate the signal. Each channel accepts audio and CV signals. Available at the store as a modular kit or fully assembled.

HOW IT WORKS

The input signal passes through a first stage of gain and bias. This stage is used to shape the signal at the next stage, the rectifier. The bias input is very useful to modulate the signal here and create changing patterns after the rectifier. The rectifier has 4 positions: bypass, positive wave inverted, negative wave inverted & full wave inverted. With the positive wave inverted position only the signal that stays above 0 volts passes to the other side. The result is inverted. At the 3rd position, only the negative signal, everything below 0, passes through. And again it’s inverted. At the last position the positive voltage keeps the same, and the negative is inverted, so if we input a sine wave the result is an “m” shaped wave. The result is inverted again.

After this stage there is an inverter switch, so we can keep the signal as it is or invert it.

Finally we have another bias stage. This stage let’s us to move the rectified signal again to the 0 point and modulate it. The channel output is connected here directly.

The mix pots attenuates the signal and mix it between the 2 channels, summing and subtracting the 2 channels.

It’s important to understand that the module is not AC coupled. This means that it works for audio and CV signals. So when an audio signal is rectified it will be centered in the 0V range. The second bias potentiometer is useful for achieve this.

When connecting a signal to the “BIAS” inputs it is useful to attenuate it previously to avoid saturating the amp. the module does not have attenuators."

"For sale is a rare Arp 2600 synthesizer with keyboard included. It's in excellent shape & FULLY FUNCTIONAL, just recently serviced by a top bay area tech, including tightening up keyboard connector cable, cleaning keyboard buss bar, cleaning sliders, etc. This is the one to get! It will serve you well for many years, don't risk paying a fortune for one in unknown condition. It also has the awesome sounding 4012 Moog Filter which later 2600's don't have as they were sued by Moog over the design. Also has original 4027-1 oscillators. All original, only modification is 3 prong power cable so you can use a standard power cable rather than the obscure oval one. Only other thing to mention is two side latches on the main module & one on the keyboard are broken, as to be expected with age. Otherwise it's complete, looks great for its age, a few scruffs/scratches/tears here & there, but front face is mostly clean & letters/graphics are crisp & easy to read. Includes power cable & keyboard connector cable. The tone on this is a monster, amazing sound like only a 2600 can have...

Programming the Kay DRM-1 Memory Rhythm Machine

"Here's a rare box I forgot I picked up a few years ago. It is very similar to the Roland / Boss DR-55 in design both style and sound. The DRM-1 features fully programmable bass drum, snare drum, closed hi hat and cymbal. Instead of a cymbal, the DR-55 has a programmable rim shot and the closed hat can either be turned off or play 8th or 16th notes. Sorry, I goofed up the bass drum rhythm (what I want to trigger on 1st step actually triggers on the 16th step), I was a bit rushed filming this video and didn't want to redo. Sometimes you get happy accidents programming this way."

Emulator II Vintage Sampler/Synth with Case of Disks

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Upon closer inspection, rummaging through the discs, it became apparent that maybe she had a much distinguished home prior to mine. Some of the discs were labelled "In Living Color," and "Pee Wee's Playhouse"--now I'm not saying the instrument came from the studios where these shows were produced, but it's a good possibility because the seller was from Hollywood. Once she got to me, I never toured with her. She either stayed in my studio, or in the case as my space was limited.

THE GRITTY:
This keyboard/synth/sampler is used. She's seen better days. But she works. The discs (those horrendous 5 1/4 ones that scream old school) take their merry time to load. It's a miracle bands could even tour with this thing back in the day. You need a boot disc (this is the data disc required to boot up the unit--it goes in the bottom slot). The top slot, or drive, uses the many, many discs that are shown in the case. It's archived by sound/type, but I've rummaged through it so many times that many are in no particular order. Some are actual Emulator II discs--the famous "Marcato Strings" disc is in it--you'd recognize that off the Pet Shop Boys' hit "West End Girls." Others are 3rd party (Northstar) and some are studio formatted discs. I never really dove into using the sampler on it, or editing sounds. The discs that I bought after I got the keyboard pretty much did the trick. The backlight on it (the light from the display window so you can read what you've selected) is out. It worked, faintly, when I first got her, but with time they do fade away. You can see this in the photos I've included.
Both drives work; they load discs--but slowly as I mentioned previously. The infamous "clicking"it gives off when loading is like Chinese water torture. Some discs in the case gave me "error" messages when trying to load, but on other times they loaded fine. It's a hit or miss. I do know there is an Emulator site online that gives detailed information on how to convert the top drive to a 3.5 size disc format and also how to change out the backlight. By doing so, you eliminate the need for the aging top drive. You still have to get the sounds transferred to 3.5 from 5.25 discs, and the speed of the loading process isn't increased. It's the same, just a more of a dependable drive. The bottom drive on these particular models (This is a standard Emulator II Software Rev 2.3/3, NO built in hard drive, all sounds come from the included discs and NONE can be stored to the keyboard as there isn't any memory to do so) is there to stay. I don't have a manual--I do know there are manuals available online for many of the vintage synths in existence.

"This patch started with the piston honda mk2. I wanted to use it as a noise source which became more of a snare drum. Next was tuning the intellijel dixie2 into a bass drum and using the doepfer bbd delay to make it interesting.

There are other parts courtesy of the tiptop 808 drums and the epoch modular benjolin. Nothing real complex here but it was definitely fun.

Also the make noise erbe verb played a big part in the beginning and also for making noise swells. All live, what you see is what you're hearing.
