Peaks, Chaos Computer, Sport Modulator, MX-4S, RG-6, S1 eurorack demo

Published on Nov 19, 2014 bigcitymusic

"Two oscillators from the Cwejman S1 are run through the S1's LPF and MMF and through the RES-4. The filtered signals are run through the MX-4S where the PH-4 is modulating the stereo image.

Peaks is set to ENV EXPERT mode. Manually adjusting the ADSR envelopes to create dynamics. Every note message (sent from Ableton) is multed out from the Peaks and into the Chaos Computer’s X and Y input to change its state with the musical sequence. The Chaos Computer is feeding the RG-6 which is modulating the S1’s MMF set to BP also feeding the RES-4. The Sport Modulator is set to S+H and modulating the PH-4 rate.

Ableton delay added to the synth output."

MOOG SOUND LAB | CHVRCHES

Published on Nov 19, 2014 Moog Music Inc

"Scottish trio Chvrches (pronounced Churches) came into the Moog Sound Lab to re-imagine their song “The Mother We Share” off of their 2013 album The Bones of What You Believe.

Lauren Mayberry sings through an MF-104M Analog Delay while manipulating the filter cutoff on a continuous arpeggiated line with a Little Phatty. Iain Cook uses drum triggers to play percussion with 6 Minimoog Voyager Rack Mounts, and uses a Sub Phatty in the song break. Martin Doherty poly-chained 4 Slim Phattys and controlled them with a Little Phatty as he handled the bass and chords throughout the song.

Tape Op Interview with Tony Rolando & Kelly Kelbel of Make Noise Music

Pictured: Kelly Kelbel, Alessandro Cortini, Tony Rolando

Tape Op has an interview with Tony Rolando & Kelly Kelbel of Make Noise Music.

There are some interesting bits including how Tony got started in the world of building synthesizers  at Moog Music.

"Tony: I'm completely self-taught. About ten years ago I went to the library and dug up every book I could find on analog circuit design. I wanted to know how synthesizers worked. I started trying to build stuff. Most of it didn't work immediately, but eventually I figured it out.

So from there, what was your first job in this field?

Tony: Moog Music. We went to Asheville to visit some friends, and the Citizen-Times headline was that Bob Moog had passed away. Kelly thought they might need some people, and encouraged me to call. They said they might be hiring, and we arranged an interview. They just put me in a room with a schematic, pointed at stuff, and asked me what it was. It was pretty simple. They just wanted to see if I knew anything at all. I passed the test, so they gave me the job. I learned a lot about building electronic instruments there.

What was your job there?

Tony: Moog was still really small. The Little Phatty hadn't come out yet. I did warranty work and service for stuff that failed right off the production line. I ran the Voyager quality control line for quite a while. There were only 20 people there back then. People had many jobs, so I even worked in shipping every once in a while. Moog was just a warehouse at the time. There were a couple of windows in the front, but once you got inside, there was no sign of daylight! I worked there for about three years. The current space is really beautiful, with big windows.

Kelly: Everybody's got to start somewhere. The last Make Noise space was 400 square feet with really weird carpet and one window. It was really stuffy, and we were all on top of each other. We were only there for a few months."

Primal Audio Announces FM4 For iPad

Published on Nov 19, 2014 Primal Audio

"Primal Audio today announced FM4, a new FM synthesizer for iPad modelled on the popular 1980s Yamaha DX series.

Great care has been put into analysing and replicating inherent sonic characteristics of the original hardware, such as internal quantisation errors and digital-to-analogue conversion. The interface is carefully thought-out, with every parameter being available on a single page.

FM4 is simple to use, yet capable of producing a multitude of sounds, ranging from punchy basses, crystal-clear bells, and lush pads, to organic textures, striking drums, and piercing leads.

Here are some audio demos:

Highlights:

o) Four operators configurable via eight different routings
o) Three sound engines modelled on 1980s hardware units
o) Eight waveforms derived from classic FM synths
o) 2x, 3x, and 4x polyphonic unison
o) Tempo-syncable arpeggiator with up, down, up-down, and random patterns
o) Microtuning with eight different temperaments
o) Supports Inter-App Audio, background audio, and MIDI (support for Audiobus is planned)

New Eurorack Manufacturer Slow Nova Probability Module

"Probably, a probability based analog multiplexer switching module by new maker: Slow Nova, is in stock. Stop by for a demo!"

via Slow Nova

"Probably is a dual 2 to 1 analog multiplexer with probability based switching.

On each clock rising edge a random number decides which input is connected to the output. The likelihood can be set independently for each switch.

Probably allows full voltage range inputs and outputs so it can be used for both unipolar and bipolar sources between -12V and 12V. Use it with trigger inputs to create complex evolving rhythms, or switch between multiple LFOs for unique modulation shapes."

This is the first Slow Nova post.

"KNAS Ekdahl Moisturizer spring reverb with analog voltage controlled filter (VCF), analog low frequency oscillator (LFO), CV control, and overdrive!

basically, the ekdahl moisturizer is a spring reverb where the springs are exposed so they can be played/hit/fiddled with. as well as being capable of creating sound in itself, you can of course also play sound through the springs like a regular spring reverb - this makes for happy-fun-time finger-modulation of the reverb on whatever audio that's going through it. on top of this there's an analog multimode filter that can be used to attenuate or exaggerate certain frequencies in the sound, this is real handy while playing the springs as you can - for instance - cut all the highs and just make thunderous doomy sounds or do the opposite; cut all the lows and make that ear piercing high frequency special love. also, it incorporates an lfo that's internally routable to the filter and that also has some external routing-stuff. the ekdahl moisturizer has tons of cv / expression pedal options on the back for even more hillarious moments. the moisturizer is a mono unit..."

Critter & Guitari Melody Mill & IIO Module Demonstration

Published on Nov 19, 2014 CritterGuitari

"This video demonstrates the principal functionality of Critter & Guitari's Melody Mill control module and IIO speaker module for Eurorack modular synthesizers.

Thanks for watching!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Melody Mill is a note generation control module. It contains a keyboard, CV outputs, CV clock input, built-in arpeggiators, a sequencer, and MIDI capabilities. With the Melody Mill you can:

Use the CV output to control oscillators
Connect your MIDI controller or computer into your modular setup using the MIDI input
Play notes, record and playback sequences and arpeggios on your favorite modules
Convert MIDI clock into CV pulses
Clock the arpeggiator with an LFO for strange melodies
'Hold' notes for drones
Connect the built-in square wave oscillator directly to a filter or an amp

The Melody Mill generates 1-Volt per octave, trigger, and gate control voltages. These signals are used to trigger other synthesizer modules. Notes may be played on the built-in keyboard or received via MIDI. The notes may be used directly to generate the CV signals, or fed through one of the five arpeggiator modes first. Adding to the fun is a hold button and a simple sequencer to record and playback notes. In addition to the CV outputs, the Melody Mill also outputs MIDI of the note it is generating.

A ‘smart’ arpeggiator clock selects a clock source depending on what is connected to the Melody Mill: CV clock input, MIDI clock, or internal clock (controlled by the 'Rate' knob).

The six modes are:

Single Shot
Up Arpeggio
Down Arpeggio
Pyramid Arpeggio
Alternator Arpeggio
Random Arpeggio

The IIO is the quickest way to get amplified sound out of your eurorack modular setup! It is a 3W amplifier and speaker in a gold anodized panel. It provides two 1/8" inputs and volume control. The IIO gets pretty loud!

Turn your portable setup into a self contained sound machine, use it in a larger setup as a preview, or use it to debug complex patches.

Dimensions: 17 HP; Depth: 38mm
Power: Requires +12V. Draws 15 - 750mA depending on volume.

KORG Releases SDK for Volca Sample

via http://korginc.github.io

"Currently your volca sample can only receive external samples through an iOS device. This SDK allows you to create your own tools with the interface that you design for your platform. Not only will this library unleash the potential to load samples and sequences, it will empower users to combine this code with other features of your making.

Auto-slice a song to generate a sample set?
Turn photos of patterns into sequences?
algorithmic sample music generator?
generate random sequence from quantum effects?

The choice is yours. Your creativity and coding skills are the limits.

what is the KORG SYRO library?

It’s the main part of the SDK. It contains the algorithms that turn your sample or sequence data (syrodata) into audio data (syrostream) that the volca sample can decode when received through its SYNC IN port.

what is volca sample?

The volca sample is a sample sequencer that lets you edit and sequence up to 100 sample sounds in real time for powerful live performances.
See more on our product page.

features

encode sample data for transfer into volca sample
encode a 16 step sequence for transfer into volca sample
delete specific samples in the volca sample
delete all the samples in the volca sample
required audio specs

KORG SYRO encodes binary data into audio using QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation). Like the old dial-up modems! It is sensitive to alterations to the audio like EQ and things like automatic level control. So please make sure they’re turned off on your device.

Your audio output device will need:

native WAV playback
stereo headphone or line level output"

Teenage Engineering PO-12 Techno demo by Jordan Passmore

Published on Nov 19, 2014 Jordan Passmore

"This demo consists of the Teenage Engineering PO-12 (prototype), a Boss DD-5 Digital Delay effects pedal and a Fender Mini Tone Master amp. The Fender amp applies a bit of distortion to the signal and slight EQ cut on the highs. The delay produces a minimal echo of the PO-12s output.

I pre-programmed the bassline for this demo but the rest of the track is built-up as the video progresses. The PO-12 is the sound generator for the entire track. Holding down the "Write" button and tweaking the right parameter knob allows for recording of parameter movement; in many cases it is decay, like on the hi-hats, but with some sounds it is pitch, filter, etc. Holding down the "FX" button followed by one of the 1-16 buttons applies an effect to the master output. This too can be recorded in real-time and embedded into the pattern. This video may or may not be representative of the PO-12 post-release as the unit in this video is a prototype."
