Light and Sound

Published on Dec 6, 2014 IMHUL

"As the image on the screen changes, different frequencies are induced in the telephone pickup coil. The software measures those changes once per second. If the difference in frequency crosses a certain threshold, the software either triggers a MIDI note-on event or randomizes all of the synthesizer parameters, or both."

The software synthesizer used is Sophia by Audiobulb.

"The pickup coil is going to the sound card input on my laptop. The software hosting the Sophia VST is called Analog Box 2.42. It can act as a modular synth/effect software in its own right a la PureData, Reaktor, etc. I put together a 'circuit' in ABox2 that measures the frequency of the signal coming into the sound card. That measurement is taken every second and compared with the previous measurement. If the difference exceeds a specific threshold value (ex. a difference of 30Hz or more), it triggers the synth, or changes its parameters, or does both.

Those pickup coils can be great for getting interesting sounds out of electronic devices. In fact, I got the idea to do this from another post on the Matrixsynth site where someone was feeding sounds from the coil into a small hardware modular setup. :)"

A Single Tool Cuts A Clear Path on the Yamaha Electone YC-45 SN 7509

Published on Nov 26, 2014 PreservationSound

Pretty cool to see the individual synth/organ by serial number on this one.

"For the seventh installment of the Preservation Sound video series, we examine how an unplanned encounter with a highly unusual instrument can provide direction for a vibrant and idiosyncratic body of musical work. Fans of modern music are likely to be familiar with duo Mates of State, who have released seven internationally-distributed albums over the past fourteen years. Mates' first three releases were nearly solely arranged around a traditional drum kit, the duo's two voices, and a single other instrument: the circa 1971 Yamaha Electone YC45 Combo Organ. We first heard Mates of State in 2002 and were immediately impressed by the raw, massive sound that was conjured up through such a minimal setup. As the band explains in our program, their unusual sound was not the result of any strategic planning, but rather a willingness to embrace the tool that they happened to have available. Mates' relationship with the YC45 is an indelible example of the strength that can be found in limitations. The video features exclusive new in-studio performances.

Hi everyone! MATRIXSYNTH is now on Patreon! If you enjoy the site and feel like contributing you can now do so. Remember MATRIXSYNTH is free and will continue to be free, so please don't see this as a guilt call for contributions.  Only contribute if you feel like it and only contribute what you wouldn't mind missing. That said, there will be some perks for those who do as a thank you for supporting the site. As you know per the site quidelines only synth demos and synth spotting posts go up.  One of the things I used to feature but simply could not keep up with were music submissions.  If you are a Patreon contributor you will now be able to send in your music for a post.  Patreon contributors will also be able to submit auction items at no charge.  Currently only the most interesting items go up.  Please note, there will still be a bar for posts on the site so we will see how submissions go.  The idea is that these posts will be extra "Patreon" posts featuring some of what supporters of the site are doing in addition to the posts that would normally go up.

the Synthrotek DS-M is an awesome new Drum synth Module for Eurorack.
The DS-M is a full featured drum synth that can emulate virtually any drum sound!

The DS-M (Drum Synth Module) is a complex, modifiable, 100% analog drum synth loosely based on the Coron DS-8 and neatly packaged into an 8hp module.

Changes to the original DS-8 include:
VCA-like trigger input (more voltage = louder output)
Trimmer-adjustable attack
LED trigger indicator
1v/o tracking (C0-C4)
Triangle core oscillator
Additional noise color switch setting (3 settings instead of 2)
More distinct noise timbres
Louder, improved noise circuit
Really LOW bass frequencies
Total range ~4Hz to 2.6kHz
In addition to being a highly versatile analog drum synth, this unit is also a fully functional monophonic synth that has these features:
1v/o tracking (C0-C4)
Adjustable attack and decay envelope over the VCA
Built-in LFO circuit
Sweep circuit
Noise circuit
Plug your control voltage and gate directly out of your midi-to-CV converter or connect your QuNexus keyboard, Arturia keyboard, or sequencer, and you're ready to make some music!

Note: Complete units come pre-calibrated (according to the Synthrotek Deluxe Power Supply System). If you are building a kit or have a different power supply system, you will need to calibrate the 1v/o tracking using the DS-M calibration guide.

Width: 8hp
Depth: 1.75" (44mm)
Power connection: 10 Pin Keyed Eurorack
Current Draw: +12V: 20mA, -12V: 10mA (5V not used)"

"The Bass Bot is an analog, monophonic synthesizer and sequencer, an incredible reproduction of one of the most sought-after analog synths ever. The sound is authentic not because of good sampling or modeling, but because it uses identical circuitry - classic transistor-based circuit design, using 21st century technology.

The sequencer uses classic step-entry programming, and stores up to 224 editable patterns, as well as 224 bot-generated preset (non-editable) patterns. The Bass Bot holds 7 songs of up to 127 bars, with everything stored in onboard flash memory - which means it will stay there when you turn the unit off.

The TT-303 is indispensible for acid and techno house music, great for hip-hop, and just a whole lot of fun! Fatboy Slim says "Everybody Needs a 303!" - here is your chance to get one.

Selectable sawtooth or square-wave VCO

"This is unit is serial #220 & less than 500 of them were ever made.

The sound is one of a kind. It sounds like no other Korg, and I have heard them all. It can get weird, grimy, dirty, growly, and at the same time beautiful and consistently interesting. The character that this synth oozes is very distinct and unique and has a very wide range of sounds.

Everything (all knobs, switches, and sliders) function as it should. I haven't experienced any problems. . ."

Great Shape / Many Mods
Fully Tested / Works Great!
Mods Include

1/4 Audio Input (Audio goes thru the filter)
1/4 VCF Input
Selectable LFO Speed (slow/normal)
Pulse width control for both oscillators
LFO to OSC 2 only switch (takes OSC 1 out of the LFO)
Awesome MG1! When I bought this synth, the dreaded foam that is normally over the sliders was already removed my the previous owner. All of the sliders and switches work fine. I replaced the original slider caps with new metallic looking ones. All of the mods work really well and make this really cool synth even better. The LFO to OSC 2 Only mod makes the MG1 scream and gives it an almost Pro-One like quality. Be sure to check out my video of this beast in action."

The BOSS DR-220E is a little programmable digital rhythm machine. This is the 'E' version - it means E-DRUM sounds. The DR-220 has a twin brother with acoustic drums sounds - the DR-220A.

Although the DR-220 is from 1986, it lacks MIDI - but it has SYNC IN and OUT. It has nice Simmons-like eighties drums! It is similar to the Korg DDM-110/DDM-220, but it has better sounds in my opinion."

ARP 2500 Module 1005 ModAmp 1 (edited version)

Published on Dec 7, 2014 DJjondent

"Playing with the ARP 2500s ModAmp.
Please excuse the rather high frequencies in the audio.... this is all still experimental stuff.

The 1005 module is described in the 2500 manual as:
" a balanced modulator, a VCA & certain associated circuitry".
It's a bit like a standard ring modular, but on steroids.

I think the 1005 uses analog multipliers in contrast to the ring of diodes found in many RMs.
One of the really cool things about the 1005 ModAMP are the two DC control voltages
Va & Vb which in this example I'm using to modulate the VCOs.
There are lots on CV inputs from both the upper & lower matrix sections.
Heaps to play with.

There are some pics of the MODAMP , raw audio & links to the unedited video (8 min) on my blog:
http://djjondent.blogspot.com.au/2014...

I've cut this video down just to give you a taste.
